6:30 pm
eastern time on nbc. as we take a look at that hole location at 16. by the way, neither spieth nor reed both texans will be at bay hill they'll stay in san antonio or houston before the masters. >> you see players trying to fit it in that fairway there about 30 yards wide. once you get to that tee shot. you turn to the right. there's the green hole location back right. players are going to have no trouble fittinghat ball into that green between the trees. but when you get to that green, presents a whole bunch of different problems. bumps and rolls --. >> down off the right.
6:31 pm
>> couldn't have a nicer lie. got a nice angle. trees to the right not really a factor. >> sets up to the side sean's been working on. you're going to see him aim right in the middle of the green and try to work it from left to right. >> hit a 6 iron on the first playoff hole. so might try to improve on that just a bit. >> this is a nice-looking shot. >> how about that! >> that's the biggest bounce i've seen on a green all day. >> it's the same shot he hit earlier in regulation. but it stopped quickly. that one kicked forward almost like it landed on a light downslope. fortunate time to do that too.
6:32 pm
that's one of the few we've seen do exactly that. jordan's next. how's that lie, rog'? >> well you know it's a little furry with this rough on the left-hand side. it's a little burned out on the high side of the fairway. not as thick as it is in places. got 190 yards here. >> down left to the hole just a little bit. >> just a little? >> yeah, very little. >> how impressive. >> shot for shot. that look from up above here. you can see it's -- >> he knew it jumped peter as soon as it took off. he said sit down. it did. >> that was a laser right at -- he was afraid it was going over the green. >> yeah.
6:33 pm
>> patrick reed playing very quickly. same type of lie from 179. >> we've seen the grass is growing straight up so it's not laying any direction. so looks to me like he's got a bit of a chance there. >> so a variety from these three players earlier here at this 16th hole. see what patrick reed did. he got left and then he scooted it up to this point and this was his clutch third. >> played a beautiful little pitch and run. put the ball way back in the stance. throw within their low and got it to release. >> able to save par remained at 9 under. birdied 18 to get into the playoff. and then there was o'hair for birdie. read the putt perfectly. just the fifth birdie of the entire day from the field. >> got him to 10 under. and then there was spieth from the awkward stance from the bunker.
6:34 pm
just another houdini recovery. saving his par. o'hair birdied it earlier. 99 reed and spieth made the par save and here come the threesome up to the 16? . a nice round of applause. not many people have left here. and they've all obviously gone on out to the course at the 16th hole. record crowds this week at the valspar championship and these three players delivering a playoff performance worthy of some of the best golf we've seen this year. so spieth, reed and o'hair in a playoff. henrik stenson just out of it by one makes his sixth top five finish and has left ten worldwide starts. he tied at doral last week. henrik stenson, playing good golf came up short this week. >> seeing some better scores
6:35 pm
today, too, dan. the wind down a little bit. and the lowest stroke average for the week was today. >> and you saw harris english go by there. he had the round of the day, 65 on a day when it's playing just about 70.6 scoring average. so it is reed away and rog' what are the prospects of getting this one up and down. >> well it's a thick lie back here. grass growing straight up here and the ball is down. >> going to have to make an open club fashion. even the fringe. >> he's reading the break, so he's got a good chance of getting this up and out softly. >> one of the things i like about his game peter is he always thinks he has a chance. plays every shot with a great deal of confidence.
6:36 pm
>> so there you go folks when you have a really tough chip. >> take a look. he's going to really keep the speed up here until it's straight up in the air. >> how about this last two up and downs, that lie here at 16. >> we're going to see a wheel lot of scrambling going on. this golf course. you've got to be patient. got to have a strong short game. >> i think rog' hit on something earlier, confidence. i mean o'hair is kind of getting that confidence back but jordan spieth and patrick reed are two of the most confident guys out here. they don't care if they're 24 and 21.
6:37 pm
you just -- exudes they're going to get it done. and they have proffered that again today. seen some marvelous recovery shots by those, too. uphill from the back of the screen. a double breaker. looks like it's one. when it first gets on the green wants to go a shade right. may sneak back left. goes left. that's the stage now for sean o'hair a 32-year-old. been working on his game for the last two years. he's been away from the
6:38 pm
limelight. said he's been working on his attitude trying to stay positive while he works hard at it. fun to be back in contention. and now got a chance -- >> one top ten in his last 65 pga tour starts. that was a tie for tenth at bay hill last year. earlier, mentioned that it got to a tie at 12th in the world. played on the presidents cup team. now he's 401st in the world. that is how far he has fallen. what this putt could mean to him is immeasurable. >> just earlier this week he informed me on the range that friday afternoon late he found out he was going to get to play next week and that's another sponsor exemption. now he's in this week. that could all change.
6:39 pm
>> that looked so good. dan. everybody else's ball had moved left. at the hole. that one looked like it had to, and it didn't. >> i think he thought it went in too, gary. >> look at that. you cannot be serious. >> to come that close to your first win. four years. now he's just got to walk over to 17 and get it all together again. >> spieth still has to tap.
6:40 pm
about a foot left each. >> yielding some birdies, gary. 12 over there the hole location is accessible. he is up. >> you know what we talked about how this tournament has been one of the best all season long. it has been a pga tour season chock full of drama, and excitement. this is the eighth playoff in 18 events this season. and the fifth in the last seven tournaments. so close finishes have been the norm on the pga tour. and this one goes on over at the 17th. >> take one more look at sean's putt. it just trickled left right there and it didn't. still out of the hole. players talk about this course. it's not only physically
6:41 pm
exhausting but mentally exhausting. but look at that. they're all flocking to the 17th. there's a playoff. >> as i said there's 12 birdies here today at the 17th. >> and remember in regulation peter, sean o'hair clearly hit the best shot of the three participants. >> and i think he was worried so much about the break that he forgot to hit it. he had it -- >> spieth missed the green to the right and made an unbelievable up and down and patrick reed's tee shot was well left of the hole. this is the point we've got to dig deep late in the day. a lot of golf. take a look at that. most birddies in the final round here at the 17th today. 12 goes to show you that it is doable right here.
6:42 pm
>> he's got 6 iron out, really not a hole location that you would think sets up well for him. >> doesn't really seem conducive to hitting a draw. >> earlier did start it right of the hole. swung it across the green to the left side. had about a 40 footer for birdie. >> away right now. >> hit it high. it's right, not turning. sounded chunky too. >> yeah i'm you know that's where not having the ability to hit the ball relatively straight or with a little cut you know you feel like you have to go at it by throwing the ball way to the right like that. >> you remember at the honda classic on the 15th hole started the bear trap he started it right of the green trying to swing it back and didn't turn
6:43 pm
it enough and it went in the water. >> so much more comfortable looking shot for this man, notah. >> it sure is. this is his third 6 iron in a row. if he hits it anything like he did on the last hole should sit up really nice for him. >> he's been to swing mechanic oriented for the last two years. trying to get back to the feel and the attitude of just playing golf and having fun. >> that one is left. that had to be a pull. it's okay. >> well he tried to hit a cut, and he knew that it wasn't cutting. he watched the follow through. kind of trying to hole it off a
6:44 pm
little but by that time that ball is long gone. >> a little arniesque, huh? >> yeah it. >> a little seve like, as well. so there you go. >> remember jordan earlier, to the right and made an incredible up and down from the deep rough, pin high. >> jordan's got a 6 iron. >> started on a better line. >> at the center of the green. not bad. so we got two on the green. one in the bunker. we'll see what happens i'm sure there's going to be still a whole lot of scrambling going on.
6:46 pm
sean o'hair patrick reed and jordan spieth third playoff hole here at the valspar championship. we're on the 17th green and patrick reed is in the bunker. got kind of a tricky little shot here, rog'. >> a little bit of a side hill little downhill side hill kind of lie which it doesn't help. and it doesn't have much green to work with. and the green is kind of working away from him a little bit, as well.
6:47 pm
>> beautifully played. big, hard swing. kept the speed up to get the ball up in the air. this is like an up and down clinic here with these guys. it's amazing. take a look at that how hard he swung at that. >> but that's what you need peter, is the speed. you got to have the speed of the club going through this sand to get it up in the air and get some spin on it. >> not only looking for spin but you're looking for loft and height on that so it comes down as soft as possible. remember the up and down that reed made on the first regulation the first playoff hole. look at that. thumbs up from jordan. recognizes good shot when he sees it. >> we saw a lot of that same clutch play at gleneagles witnessed it with him.
6:48 pm
>> so now we've got two long putts now. sean o'hair and jordan spieth. notah i thing sean is next. >> yeah you're correct, peter, and in regulation was about same line but half as close, and he left it well short so he knows he's got to give it a little bit more than what he feels. >> four pars here. in regulation for sean o'hair. these par 3s, they're difficult playing these holes, even par, all the par 3 s. we'd like to go 1 under right here.
6:49 pm
short again. this one was not on line as it was in regulation. so now, sets the stage for jordan spieth gary can he just rush another one in? >> i wouldn't put it past him, rog'. he has made some unbelievable putts. especially on the back nine today. >> no doubt about that. this putt now will come across a little bit of a rise in the green. i think that's going to influence it to the left when it comes across there. >> you know rog' this is my favorite time of day to play but i also enjoy eating dinner at this time of day. >> we all have different kind of pastimes for this kind of an evening. >> well said, rog'.
6:50 pm
>> patrick reand sean o'hair they're thinking report, what are you going to do. >> into the green out of that bunker influence pretty good from the right. pretty good swing right to left. >> yeah i guess he is going to do it again. on a day that we will not soon forget that had everything that you could possibly ask for from two of these really young golfers, and jordan spieth who emerges from a three-man playoff with a birdie walk-off her pga tour victory number two.
6:51 pm
28 feet for jordan spieth who earlier just to get into this playoff has some of the finest runs of up and downs we've seen in a long time. so there is that second hard-fought paj tour win for spieth. the fourth player in the last 75 years to win two pga tour titles before the age of 22. as we send it down to steve. >> thank you. congratulations jordan. your second pga tour victory before the age of 22. you're a guy who embraces the pressure. but i don't think anybody understands the type of pressure you guys are under out here. how would you describe that? it was crazy back nine being three down with six to play and you know the snake pit obviously is not going to lend any birdies, so that was just that
6:52 pm
was the best michael and i have ever done together. and just the scrambling coming in those par saves coming in and then you know that putt that's just luck right i mean that doesn't hit the hole i got a four-foot slider. but i guess it was my day. >> you were talking about your caddie michael, you are a guy who shows his emotions fist pump a lot of smiles. you were joking with me that your voice might crack. how do you keep your emotions intact? >> well it's tough. you want to feed off the energy of the crowd. you want to have it all be positive. you can't have negative thoughts in your head. that's what gets me sometimes. that's w today. under this kind of pressure these fans were unbelievable from the get-go today. owe a lot to them and just an unbelievable team effort. >> all three of you put on quite a show thanks. >> thanks a lot, pete. >> notah over to you. >> i got sean o'hair. you hung in there all day. played wonderful. it's been awhile. what were your thoughts as that
6:53 pm
ball was rolling on the 16th hole on that second playoff. >> i hit the putt i wanted to hit. right on my line. i thought i made it when i looked up and saw it was just tracking exactly where i wanted it to go slightly to the left. patrick's chip kind of veered off a little bit to the left. so did jordan's putt grain was going that way. just wasn't meant to be. i hit a great putt there and you know and i gave it my all and jordan is a great champion. >> well thanks playing well again. roger. >> thanks notah. patrick, never fun to lose in a playoff, i know that. talk to us about the up and in you made at the 72nd hole and then again on the second playoff hole. >> you know in regulation i felt like i had only had two yards closer than the second go round. regulation just at the flag and had perfect putt perfect speed to make it just get myself in the playoff, and unfortunately
6:54 pm
two yards farther, plugged in the bunker in the first playoff hole luckily wasn't good muff to get up and down, and got a wire on the second playoff hole hit it over the green, and it was sitting -- myself a chance coming down the next one. had to be a matter of time. unfortunately i was 0 for 3 on the three playoff holes on hitting the green, so really didn't have much of a chance. >> thanks for your time. >> thank you roger. and wow, that was some clutch play by all three of those players. it's hard to kind of put this whole thing in perspective. jordan spieth gets it done after being as we described it houdini. and such a big example of that was at the 17th. this was the near impossible second shot at the par 3 in regulation. >> just played an unbelievable flop shot to get the club under the ball and get it to land that softly on the downslope was
6:55 pm
incredible. go on to make that putt for a par. >> so 17 was the hole today. and the winner a pumped up jordan spieth goes to number 6 in the world. it's the highest ranking in his young career. becomes the second highest american behind bubba watson as you take a look at the latest fedexcup rating rankings as jordan spieth takes 37 spots up and moves into the top 10 in to the 7th position. well we've had three good legs on this florida swing. what does the fourth and final one have in store? rory mcilroy is there top five players in the world are there. arnold palmer invitational presented by mastercard. and it was a long time ago, gary. we're talking about how important a day this was for jordan spieth again just 21 years old and with the one win but he's been in this position before and when i talked to him last night i could tell how
6:56 pm
important it was. >> he's treated like a star on the pga tour by the media, the fans and justifiably so but to be a star you've got to win golf tournaments and when you do it like this on the third extra playoff hole that goes a long way. this is the fifth time that he has played in the final group in the final round of a pga tour event and it's only the first time that he's gotten the "w." >> that putter just heated up just 28 putts in 21 holes of play today. the difference really was the putter. he had the great attitude that he talked about he had to fight a little bit with his caddie but it was the putter that got it done today. >> it was indeed. he did play some pretty good wedge shots from around the green. >> give him the possibility of making those putts. but you know his putting stroke i like. i like what he does. especially looking at the hole. frees up to his putting stroke.
6:57 pm
a good athlete and jordan was a good athlete in high school. played several different sports. every other sport you look at where you want the blah to go. it kind of makes sense for him to be looking at the hole. >> yesterday he made all those clutch putts jordan spieth emerges with his second pga tour victory and as we mention moves up to 6th in the world. he's got his sights set on rory mcillroycilroy. he's only 21. he takes yet another step toward that goal. what a week in palm harbor. a reminder if you missed any of today's action get caught up with golf central on golf tour again heads to orlando for arnie's invitational presented by mastercard. coverage begins thursday on golf channel at 1:00 eastern time continuing saturday at 2:30 eastern time on nbc. coming up next it's the voice followed by "dateline." so for our entire golf channel
