afternoons coming up. >> chuck, thanks. we are following a developing story this morning. three tsa agents are recovering after being attacked thds the new orleans airport. police say 63-year-old richard white enterered the security area armed with wasp spray and a machete. he sprayed two officers and cut another officer with the machete. the suspect chased a tsa officer through the area before he was stopped. >> that officer fired three times, hitting the perpetrator once in the left chest, et facial area and left thigh. >> the person was killed in the shooting. police are investigating if he had a grudge against the tsa or airport personnel. >> a developing story from canada. one prnerson is dead and two police officers hurt after a shooting in ontario.

the shooting prompted a large police response. at least 40 officers responded. police say this is a serious incident but won't go into much detail. there is news on a frightening incident on a metro bus. a stray bullet hit a woman riding the bus. here's more on the crucial witness. >> 23-year-old wade patterson has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon for a shooting own board the 92 bus headed to 14 and u streets northwest. passengers say it became clear the bus probably wasn't going much further. >> between this bus stop and the second there was a scuffle this the back of the bus. we heard a gunshot. so everybody started getting off. >> everyone rushed to get off the bus.

>> she didn't know she was shot until she got off. >> police initially thought two men with cuts and bruises were somehow injured in the melee. they were taken for medical treatment with the woman who was shot in the leg. investigators knew there was a good witness on board the bus. in fact there were five of them. >> the bus hases five cameras pt they determined the two males were actually the two involved in the fight. >> wade patterson was arrested. it is not clear what charges the other man is facing for the shooting inging of an innocent bystander. >> how the widening project may affect you adding additional lanes could mean 35 hems would be torn down. vdot says the plan is in the early stages . adding more lanes is an initiative to reduce grid lock.

tolls will affect thousands. tolling is expected to begin in 2017. that happens at a.m. in vienna. >> also today, you will have a chance to talk to police about a string of shootings at the petworth neighborhood. after the public comment portion police will present a plan on how to stop the violence. >> a former stafford county teacher who admitted to having sex with students is pleasing guilty. erica lynn mesa pleaded guilty to solicitation of a minor and the delinquency of a minor. she effaces 22 years this in prison. she taught in stafford county. she had inappropriate relationships with at least four students since 2012. >> virginia's attorney general calling for a databasen on college sexual assaults. a list for those expelled for committing sec shall attacks

responsibility for wednesday's deadly attack on a museum in tunisia. >> the head of mess i mis's naacp chapter is asking folks not to rush to judgment after a mysterious death in the state. otis bird was found dead hang ing from a tree. his family reported him missing two weeks ago. investigators say he was having financial troubles and was seen leaving a casino on march 2. federal, state and local investigators are trying to figure out if he took his life or if someone else killed him. police say an autopsy won't be ready until next week. north carolina state university temporarily banning alcohol at social events for most fraternities. two chapters were suspended including one this in light of drug and sexual assault al a investigations. a pledge book containing sexist and racist comments. the alcohol ban applies only to those part of the intrafraternity councilment black fraternities have a separate council and aren't

her punishment. she's accused of running her grand daughter to death. she made the young girl run for three hours in the yard as a punishment for lying about eat ing candy. savannah gerard died that evening. her grandmother could face the death sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. a walmart store in maryland is back to business as usual after being evacuated after someone called asking about bomb-making materials. the investigators say someone called the story in california and wanted to know if they sold supplies to make bombs. officers evacuated the store and k-9 units swept as a precaution. it was deemed not a threat. >> there is a new treatment to help kids with scoliosis. detailsen on the magic device that's helping kids live better. >> waiting are room. >> this is 8-year-old selena a

vibrant, innerer jet tick girl with a smile that brightens up the room. she'll most likely spend life in a wheelchair because she has muscular dystrophy which caused not only muscle loss but severe scoliosis in the spine. >> it was bad. it was affecting her breathing, pushing down on her lungs. >> doctors implanted a rod in her spine to help fix some of the curve. her mother christina said it was a rough surgery and it wasn't a permanent solution. she'd have to get new rods every few months as she grewle taller which meant a lot more surgeries. >> every time you put one with of these children or any child with muscular dystrophy under anesthetic you have to intubate take her lung function and putting them under by itself is hard. it's hard on the child, hard on the family. it's hard on the moms. >> before selena could undergo a second surge tri food and drug administration approved a new

treatment called the magec rod, a tie yum implant that's lengthened using hag nets and an external remote control. that eliminates the need for more surgery. >> it's so much easier on them on the family. and our rate of infection is down. >> reporter: dr. shannon kelly is an orthopedic is surgeon at children's national health system. she says with the old rods there was a high risk are of infection. many children have eight surgery ares over the course of oh four or oh five years. the risk of getting an infection is 50%. today selena is getting herod lengthened. it i takes just a few minutes for doctors to press the device on her back and lengthen the rod just a centimeter or so. >> it doesn't hurt. she said it tingles or it feels warm. >> her mother says selena needs a new set of magec rods in two

years. that's a much better option than the number of surgeries she would have had . she's hoping a straighter spine will not only be better for her health but will give her confidence as she gets older. >> we have raised her, you know you're not different. you are differently abled but no different than anybody else. >> news 4, today. >> come here! >> oh the video shows an incredible rescue here. a puppy stranded on icy lake erie for days finally back with her family. it took two attempts to rescue the pup. it was quite a rescue. a volunteer airboat captain and a le call tv crew came to her rescue. you can see she was the little black speck on the ice out there. >> perfect use for an airboat, too. >> you don't see them often. >> not on frozen lake erie. usually in the everglades.

>> a few more weeks and it would be with water. >> it's been a long slow turn to get out of the deep freeze here. yesterday's heavy wet snow is now a thing of the past. it was a pretty day to be outside. now we are ready for the daffodils and all the signs of springtime to finally start daring to stick their head above ground. if you have pictures of early spring flowers send it to @chuck bell 4. happy to share it on tv. outside, a little bit of a cloudy and foggy start. these aren't the kind of clouds that will mess up your weekend. you can see the monument in downtown washington. i used to say 555 feet five inches but now 554 feet ten inches. that isn't as much fun to say. outside, cloudy skies out there. the clouds will be scoured out in the next four to five ours or so.
