crash that happened in prince george's county on livingston road in ft. washington after 1:00 this morning. it was a single car crash and the driver died at the scene. he lost control of the scene causing it to roll over. we learned that the driver was thrown out of the vehicle. maryland state police still investigating a crash involving an off-duty police officer in anne arundel county. they shut down the roadway. the officer hit 63-year-old raymond batters. ala is achb officer with the tacoma police department. he was off duty at the time. d.c. police are warning you to take extra care if you're walking in one neighborhood in northwest washington. >> that's right. they say there were several robberies there across two days. let's go to news 4's derrick ward who joins us live from tenth street in northwest where

three of those robberies happened. derrick? >> reporter: good morning. police do see enough similarity s that they think they could be related in terms of the victims and, of course in terms of the suspects. most of the victims have been female all happened during daylight hours in the morning. take a look at some video. the first happened tuesday at about 10:15 in the 600 block of p street. a woman was approached by two males and a female. someone pulled an unknown object police are calling it out from under their shirt. the victim was able to run away before anything was taken. about 12:20 in the 1100 block of 10th street two males pulled a knife and demanded money. the victim was not injured. then on wednesday a victim was approached by two men, one of those people did pull out a knife and the victim was assault

assaulted. money was taken. also an incident in the 1600 block of vermont before 8:00 a.m. a knife was also used there. the victim was pushed to the ground and the wallet was taken from a female victim. they've been somewhat similar in nature and also increasingly violent. that's why police are putting this bulletin out and want people to be aware of that in the neighborhoods in northwest and they'll also be stepping up patrols in the meantime. derrick ward news 4. police on the hunt for those involved in a shootout in dumfries. witnesses say the cars were speeding down swan's creek lane. the people inside shooting at each other. bullets hit several nearby homes. police tell us no one got hurt. police are looking for a maroon scion and a gold saab. today we'll hear from a man who says the prince george police officer put a gun to his home. he was told quote, we're pgpd

we shoot people by officer santiago. apparently he says this happened last may. he said santiago put the gun in his mouth as well. santiago was indicted on friday facing assault charges and has been suspended without pay. cunningham will speak to reporters later this morning. 94 years old and stabbed to death in her own home. this morning prince george's county police trying to figure out why. this happened inside this hyattsville house. police spent hours at the home yesterday collecting evidence. investigators say the woman was targeted stressing to neighbors this was not a random crime. >> a new report out about the underground emergency on metro. a woman died and more than 80 people left checking on a train that filled with smoke two months ago. now the associated press says a 911 supervisor did not have the right software to send rescuers in quickly. despite multiple calls, the people on the train near

you can hear some screams. frightening cell phone video. skiers justing to safety after the ride they were on started going backwards forcing them to jump. the resort says about 200 people were on that lift when the problem started. seven of them were hurt. they're recovering today but the cell phone video capturing it all. you can hear the screams for help. you see it right there going backwards. one person falling right there. pretty scary. residents of a small texas town back home after a freight train derailed.

this accident happened yesterday evening. five of the derailed cars were tankers containing methanol. the texas department of public safety and hazardous material crews were called in. state troopers say it's unclear why 12 of the 40 cars jumped the tracks. a new york father preparing to bury seven of his children while his wife and daughter are fighting for their lives. a powerful fire ripped through their brooklyn home. it's the deadliest fire new york has seen in years. >> reporter: firefighters rushed to the burning home but still too late to save seven children. the youngest victim five years old, four boys three girls. the eldest 16. officials say their 45-year-old mom and a 14-year-old girl jumped from a second floor window, both in critical condition. >> it's a tragedy for this family, for this community, a

police in fairfax county are working on new initiatives to keep your kids safe online. they say they need your help. i recently visited with detectives as they connected with many of you online. >> elaine keltz sees herself as quite tech savvy. >> i consider myself really active online. >> reporter: still this mom of three young kids says she can't keep up with all the changes in social media and the new apps. >> it's scary kids are finding anything online without your knowledge. >> reporter: she scrolled through this online chat hosted by fairfax county police child exploitation unit. >> is there anything from predator behavior that you can share? >> yes, our detectives gets training from a number of places to include the fbi. >> we were with police on the other end. >> there are sheeps there are wolfs and there's the sheepdog. the sheepdog has to be close to the sheep because the wolf isn't

anywhere on your mobile device get our app cast full weather, download our storm team 4 or more importantly our nbc washington app. all new this morning, someone is in the life threatening injuries following a stabbing in manassas. according to prince william county police this started with a fight at the all american steakhouse off dumfries road near forest park high school. according to police the fight started inside but moved outside the restaurant. they won't tell us if they've made any arrests. the picture that's gone viral shows the aftermath of a bloody arrest involving a uva student. what is missing on camera is what led up to the incident. "the washington post" reports the alcohol beverage control agency pledged to where body cams more than a year ago, following the mistaken arrest of another student. the post says in martese johnson's arrest last week the agents were not wearing body

cameras. the 20-year-old says officers threw him to the ground. he had just been turned away from a local pub. in the last several days students protested the arrest on university grounds. starting tomorrow your morning commute could get a whole lot faster in northern virginia. buses can use the shoulder lanes on i-66. if traffic is slower than 35 miles an hour, they can move over to get you where you need to be on time. the bus changes are part of a bigger plan to improve traffic. vdot is considering adding another lane to the road. that would mean 35 homes would have to go. now the people who live in those homes are standing up against the plan saying they shouldn't be penalized for living somewhere they don't have to to make that drive. >> it's hard because we live two blocks away from the metro. i never drive to work. >> vdot says different plans for improving the road would have folks making sacrifices like

this. the department says it's not moving forward without community input first. we have news for those of you driving through maryland a major roadi-95 begins today. mdot transportation secretary says the work could cause major traffic problems fors months. the project will last into the fall. a former professor at american university is headed to pliz on. david pitts pleaded guilty to breaking into a building on the campus last september to steal prescription drugs. prosecutors say he set a number of small fires that night as well. pitts was the chairman of the school eats department of public policy. we're getting look inside a tunisian museum as armed gunmen stormed inside. surveillance video from the deadly attack this past wednesday shows two tunisians trained in libya open fire inside the museum.

the gunmen died in a shootout with security forces. isis has claimed responsibility for that attack. the u.n. security council holding an emergency meeting to discussion the situation in yemen. the country is on the verge of civil war. shy quite rebels are issuing a call to arms to battle against government forces. there's been heavy fighting following the deadly bombings at two mosques. now the u.s. has evacuated all remaining personnel and special forces. a tsa agent is recovering from being shot after an attack at the new orleans airport. richard white was chasing the agent with a machete. he also used wasp spray on some of the agents and brought a bag of molotov cocktails as well. the woman who ran from him said it was a horrifying experience. >> i have to say officer sleef is my hero. she saved my life. the man was within inches of whacking me. >> investigators say they have no idea why white did this.

they are working on figuring that out today. let's bring you up to speed, virginia state delegate joe morrissey is going to announce running for state senate. he recently finished serving jail time for his relationship with his teenage receptionist. jesse matthew will be in court facing charges for the abduction of uva student hannah graham. prosecutors say he later killed her. thursday he'll face a preliminary hearing in that case. the nationals are in florida right now, but tomorrow we'll learn about new safety measures at nationals park. the nats are showing off metal detectors you'll have to go through in order to get into the park. major league ball parkbaseball says they'll start using detectors this year. the long winter took a heavy toll on local schools. millions of dollars have been spent repairing furnaces. the i-team investigates how much it will cost to keep the students warm. the new radio and seatbelt

winter is officially over but the long cold spell took an enormous toll on schools. >> furnaces failing, boilers breaking down in so many places old heating systems pushed their their limits. as i-team's scott macfarlane reports, it's approaching $500 million. >> let's brainstorm ideas -- >> reporter: inside this elementary school in beltsville, a new heating system. we found it comfortable inside. the principal says that's one less distraction for the students. >> you don't know what the weather is going to be outside. what we try and do is focus on the time we do have the students in the building to make sure we maximize those opportunities. >> reporter: inside some of the newest school buildings, heating systems failed. >> i'm sure you're aware, we experienced historically frigid

temperatures within the past couple weeks. even in our newest buildings, our infrastructure wasn't able to handle the frigid temperatures. >> reporter: this mom was hustling her kids out of one of the older school buildings, gwynn park high school built in 1956. the heat failed in some buildings inside. >> people are inside looking like this. >> reporter: the district acknowledged heat problems and fixed them and recommended kids wear layers. >> i didn't feel like these conditions were appropriate for a learning environment. >> reporter: a review of public school district building records obtained by news 4's i-team gwynn park's system is beyond its useful life over do for replacement or repair. one of hundreds of schools with aging outdated furnaces in these four counties of maryland alone. >> you can't rely on an old unit like this to continue on

indefinitely. >> ray barnes oversees school buildings including valerie elementary where the boiler was installed in the 1960s. >> why hasn't it been replaced yet? >> it has to stand in line. >> reporter: it will be replaced in about a year. in howard county about $17 million in repairs for deteriorating hvac systems there. twice this year a school closed for temperature issues. here in montgomery county a more than $100 million backlog of hvac repairs. in one case the system was linked to mold two children report sickened. it's since been fixed. money, lobbying for hundreds of millions in new funding and repairs and build new schools, but the i-team found even if the stat ratcheted up spending that money wouldn't cover every

good sunday morning everyone. the ncaa tournament rolls on. maryland with a big match-up today against west virginia, but last night it was georgetown, the hoyas, their season came to an end, 22 wins this year for john thompson, iii's group. he couldn't have been happier for the senior class despite a very tough loss to a good utah team.
