good morning. i'm david culver. >> we are rolling this morning. i'm angie goff. welcome to "news 4 today"." >> veronica johnson telling us up and down up and down. we're headed down right now. >> way down. a lot of folks probably itching, wanting to get out in the yard maybe do a little planting. i'll talk more about that later. 48 your temperature. look at the wind. it's northwest at 17. so it's the breeze too, along with our cool conditions that's giving us a little early morning chill. winds throughout the area in fact anywhere from about 15 close to 20-mile-per-hour gusts. i think at least the early part of the day, we'll have the wind. the early part of the day, we'll also have most of our cloud cover. after about lunchtime, we'll see the clouds thin out.

that will give us a chance to get up to around 53 degrees. the average 59 degrees. we'll be running cooler than average. because of that you'll need a jacket coming up. you can talk about what you'll expect temperaturewise, rainfallwise. we'll take a look at the spring outlook from noaa. i'll have that in a minute. there is a safety warning if you live in northwest d. xrchlt. >> the problem automatic according to police several robberies in the same area. >> derrick ward joins us along an area where two robberies happened within minutes of each other. >> indeed they did. this is considered the southern or southeastern part of the logan neighborhood. there is enough similarity among the robberies and the choice of victims that police believe they may be connected. table a look at some of the video and some of the points about this.

it started about 10:15 on tuesday in the 600 block of p street. a man was approached by two men and a woman. they demanded her phone. she ran off and nothing was taken. later that same day around 12:20 p.m. in the 1100 block of 10th street a woman was approached by two men who demanded money. one of those men pulled a knife and the victim indeed in that case complied. she had some of her property taken. that evening at about 7:54 a woman was pushed to the ground in the 1600 block of vermont avenue. three people came up behind her. one had a knife and they got that woman's wallet. that keeps with the pattern that police are seeing in this area. so enough that they would put out a warning. then again on wednesday, about 9:00 in the morning, in the 1300 block of tenth street a woman was approached by a man with a knife. he came up behind her. she screamed and the suspect ran off. they didn't get anything. five minutes later in the same

area another woman was approached by someone with a knife. that person was assaulted and had some property taken. police are warning folks in this area there seems to be a group of robbers praying upon women either in the morning hours going to work or in the evening hours coming from work. they want residents to be vigilant and aware this is going on. perhaps walk in groups if at all possible. keep your head on a swivel, especially if you're a woman. because somebody is preying upon them. live in northwest, derrick ward news 4. >> derrick, thank you. we are following a developing story this morning. a man is dead after a crash in prince george's county. this happened on livingston road in ft. washington after 1:00 this morning. it was a single-car crash. you can see the car right there in the woods. the driver did die at the scene. police say he lost control of his car, causing it to roll over. the driver was thrown out. >> right now maryland state

police investigating a deadly crash on route 50. this according to investigators started with an off-duty cop. travis ala was driving on route 50 when he hit another car with raymond batters inside. batters died. the roadway is now back open. ala's car flipped over but he's expected to survive. today we'll hear from man who says a prince george's police officer put a gun to his head. william cunningham was told quote, we're pgpd we shoot people by officer santiago. santiago was indict by a grand jury on friday and is fashioning assault charges and has been suspended without pay. cunningham will speak with reporters later this morning. check our platforms to find out what he says. 94 years old and stabbed to death in her own home. this morning prince george's county liss trying to figureout why this happened inside this

hyattsville house. police spent hours at the home yesterday morning collecting evidence. investigators believe the woman was targeted stressing to neighbors this was not a random crime. >> we're learning more about the underground emergency on metro in which one woman died. the tunnel near the l'enfant plaza station filled with smoke two months ago. the associated press says the 911 supervisor got multiple calls for help but did not have the right software to send rescuers in quickly. people trapped on the train waited more than 30 minutes for help to arrive. >> in the week ahead, police in charlottesville will update us on their investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving a fraternity at the universe tiff of virginia. it was detailed in a widely discredited "rolling stone" magazine. the article sparked outrage and protest last year. i'll be at the news conference and bring you a full recap tomorrow afternoon. in the week ahead, bob mcdonnell will be in court for

deadline iran's president says an agreement is in reach. secretary of state john kerry says the talks have made substantial progress but important gaps remain. kerry flew yesterday to meet with his english counterpart. president obama is reacting to a viral racist video involving a now suspended fraternity. what he says would have happened 30 years ago. a war memorial pays tribute to white and black soldiers in a once segregated south ca creating a new divide. we'll explain that and more coming up.

university of oklahoma for its response to a racist fraternity video. two students from the video expelled. the brothers chanting about lynching. the president told the "huffington post" that there might have been more tolerant for that chant 30 or 40 years ago. >> a town in south carolina is divided over a war memorial honoring those who fought and died. nbc's mark potter shows us the controversial way soldiers are being remembered and what's being done about it today. >> reporter: on main street an aging war memorial honors the fallen from world wars 1 and ii, korea and vietnam, reflecting the nation's segregationist past, it lists the dead from greenwood as either white or colored, which for those seeing it in 2015, a shock. >> this is sad, isn't it? >> i grew up here, when i see it in black and white, it just, it bothers me.

>> reporter: it also bothers deeply the mayor of greenwood, welburn adams who leads a town that's 42% black. >> the term colored is offensive to me. i can only imagine how it feels to african-americans. >> reporter: arguing that whites and blacks fought and died and should be honored together, mayor adams raised $15,000 to build new plaques with all the dead listed alphabetically, not by race. >> i don't think main street is a place where you should be glorifying segregation. >> reporter: today those plaques still sit in the mayor's office after he learned a state law prohibits changing historical monuments without a two-thirds vote of the legislature. former national park historian and painter eric williams believes the plaques should stay exactly where they are, to preserve history and teach future generations. >> they need to know at one time the country was not always as welcoming and integrated as it

back at 10:15, in a come-from-behind win, benjamin netanyahu was re-elected last week. >> joining us to talk more about this is moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd. chuck, netanyahu pre election made it quite clear on his clock there would be no palestinian state. less than 48 hours after winning, he kind of softened that approach. now we're hearing from president obama who says he's taking him at his word pre election. so at this point, is the white

house somewhat giving up on restoring these relations with israel? >> they're giving up on having the peace process being basically u.s. mediated between the palestinians and israelis. it means the president is saying he's essentially open to the united nations playing a role. this is something israelis have not wanted something the united states have not wanted. i think you should expect at some point palestinians trying to get recognition for statehood at the u.n. perhaps they pass a resolution a framework of what a two-state solution might look like out of the united nations. there won't be a u.s. veto for that. that's what could change policiwise. and suddenly that isolates israel more around the world, something that's only going to add to the tension between the two administrations. >> the shield is gone? >> the shield may be gone at the u.n. for that. i still think the shield is there for the international criminal court and some of the other things that attempt to go after israel. i think on the peace plan the

u.s. shield is gone. >> i feel like we're always looking ahead to the next election in this case 2016. >> in 24 hours we'll have a candidate, the first one. >> when we look at israel and what's going on with the president, is this a win for republicans here? >> it's interesting on the jewish vote and the israel vote pro israel vote if you look at jewish americans, they're still predominantly democratic voters 71% voted for president obama in 2012. i think where it could matter is sometimes the beltway chatter and things like that i don't think it's going to have a huge effect. i think the real box is hillary clinton. the clintons have been associated with pro-israel for a long time. the democratic party is really splitting in the palestinian issue in a way. she has to walk a line that i think will be a little trickier

for her than the way she's dealt with it in the past. i don't know that she can public lib split libly split from the president. ted cruz planning to announce he'll run for president tomorrow. what does the signal with him being the first candidate to make the run official? >> when you're in the second tier trying to jump into the front-runner first tier good to have something on your belt to say you're first. cruz will get a little extra attention than some of the other secondary candidates trying to break into the top tier. i think what's important is where ted cruz is doing this doing it at liberty university in virginia. this is not about virginia. liberty university founded by the late jerry fallwell where a lot of evangelical christians attend. evangelicals a huge part of the republican primary electorate. cruz is basically saying he wants to be the candidate of

degrees. today we're trapped solidly in the low 50s. i think we'll be hard pressed to come up to 55 degrees. keep moving if you plan on exercising maybe hitting the trail, biking or running. you'll need a jacket and even sunglasses especially if you're in the counties across northern maryland. meanwhile, travel conditions absolutely terrific. the roads dry and all the snow we had the other day is gone. it's vanished. radar scanning the area. dry here. i think the next time we see anything showing up it will be showers on thursday. it's looking like the showers for thursday will be early in the morning. meanwhile cloud cover early today. you can see it streaming across the area. your thicker clouds down here around roanoke and richmond. again, not too bad. i don't like the fact that we're going back to around freezing. 28 up in state college. wilks barre 28.
