. a couple of breaking news stories right now. severe weather outbreak has hit the heartland of the country. a lot of damage there. one person killed in oklahoma. we'll get to that story in just a moment. first, new details tonight

coming in about what happened moments before an airliner crashed in the french alps. good evening. >> i'm chris lawrence. one of the pilots left the cockpit and couldn't get back in. an investigator said that the pilot went from knocking lightly to trying to smash the door down but he was locked out of the cockpit. that's allegedly evidence from the flight voice recorder. nbc news hasn't confirmed "the times" report but we know the agency investigating the crash has recovered one of the black boxes and contains usual sounding voices and they confirm there was no midair collision. it descended from its cruising altitude and crashed into the side of a mountain. three of the passengers were americans, including a mother and daughter from northern virginia. emily selke graduated from honors from drexler university and worked here in the d.c. area. she and her mother yvonne were

heavily involved in their church in manassas. >> the thing that comes to mind is that they were just good people. they wanted to do god's work they were committed to their faith. both emily and yvonne. and they just wanted to show that -- show their love to the community, to the church community and show that they were faithful. >> now, the second black box is going to be critical to unlocking what happened inside that jet. today, officials said it's very likely they will find the flight data recorder. >> thanks chris. we'll be following the latest developments on that story. you can find updates online and at news4 today. right now, one person is dead and a lot of damage after a line of storms ripped through the middle of the country. this is tulsa, oklahoma where a tornado killed one person and nearly destroyed a mobile home park. 24 people were reported injured

and right now people are without power. a small tornado hit the town of moore, oklahoma. that's the place that is still recovering from a huge ef-5 tornado that hit back in 2013. the same storm system is headed our way. doug we're not going to get anything like that are we? >> no jim, nothing like that. severe storms broke out earlier this afternoon and we have not seen much severe weather across the country as a result of the cold weather we've been seeing. now we're seeing the warm air make its way up from the gulf and that's why we have the strong storms through oklahoma missouri very heavy rain through st. louis. that's the same storm moving our way. temperatures today only in the 50s, a high of 54 in d.c. and 54 in martinsburg.

i'll tell you when we have the best chance to see storms coming up in my ug. d.c. police have issued a silver alert as they try to find a 71-year-old woman who has gone missing. she was last seen this afternoon and officers are working with her family to help find her. the last time she was seen she was wearing blue jeans and a gray wool jacket. also police arrested four people in connection with drug charges. they found 26 ounces of cocaine, $16,000 in cash and several weapons inside the suspect's car. the four are locked up without bond. the student of the university of virginia who was severely beaten during an arrest last week in charlottesville will be in court tomorrow. his name is martese johnson.

he's expected to plead not guilty to charges of public intoxication and obstruction of justice. in the wake of the arrest virginia governor terry mcauliffe ordered all d.c. officers to be retrained and all alcohol regulators should direct their actions at establishments not at students. how to improve relations between officers and the communities they police? that's what big names in law enforcement are talking about tonight at american university. jackie benson is more in northwest with what they discussed. jackie? >> reporter: one of the questions put to the panelists is how to regain the trust of entire communities and the a ens answers were surprising. the panel was made up of former police chiefs including cathy

lanier and brought to be by the associations of chiefs. this is an effort to address the crisis in community law enforcement agencies after the unarmed shooting of michael brown. audience members submitted questions, including one that asked, what could do you in the 90 days to re-evaluate trust. >> when you're evaluating your recruits for the job, one performance measure that you rate them on empathy. >> do you incentivize on low-level offenders? >> the audience included many american university students. >> i want to hear from our law enforcement to hear what they have to say about how they are bridging gaps between the community they serve. is within the community. we don't need to go to the university or even these panels.

the solutions are in the communities themselves and to hear a police officer say that was really powerful. >> reporter: and one of the suggestions at tonight's town hall was the creation of a nationwide commission to re-examine local policing with recommendations for every department in the united states. live in northwest, jackie bensen news4. >> thanks jackie. new at 11:00, a man from fairfax county in prison for supporting terrorism is now suing the fbi and his mother for taking custody of his infant son. back in 2010 he pleaded guilty for trying to join a terrorist group in somalia. he was arrested at the airport with his baby. his wife pleaded guilty to lying to authorities. she had to leave the country. chester is suing because the fbi told his mom that the couple planned to raise the boy in jordan. chester's mother won full custody after chester was arrested.

the army sergeant captured by the taliban and then released during a controversial prisoner swap is going to face an article 32 hearing. bowe bergdahl is charged with desertion and endangering fellow soldiers. he left his post in afghanistan and ended up a taliban captor until last year. he could face life in military prison. in one day, i lost the most important person in my life and the man i loved so much. and i have no answers. >> a plea for help tonight from the wife of a lawyer who was found dead in a d.c. hotel room. kim vuong asked the public to help identify a person of interest who police revealed today is a woman. she was caught on surveillance the night before the body of david messerschmitt was found in a room of the donovan hotel.

tonight, we're getting video of two men trying to rob a gas station using a screwdriver and crowbar. they didn't take any money from the clerk. they kicked and pounded on a machine in the store which we think is an atm or lottery machine. they didn't get the money and took off in a white van. d.c.'s ward 8 tonight, the candidates running to fill the vacant city council seat talked about the issues facing the neighbors there. that seat was held by council member marion barry until his death recently. voter also decide between 13 candidates. a special election will be held on april 28th. the event was held in south d.c. tonight in front of a packed crowd. our tom sherwood was the moderator. officers say they were just trying to protect themselves. >> but the man says he thought he was going to die. >> it's emotional because of what i had to go through.

we just learned that an university of maryland student who sent in claims about rape is not going to come back to school. the e-mail is a year old but was forwarded to university leaders this month. they met with student groups to talk about student diversity. new accusations of police brutality tonight after a traffic stop in suburban detroit was caught on dash cam. the officer stopped a man named floyd dent back in january after he ran a stop sign in an area that's said to be known for drug crimes. the video then shows him being pushed to the ground and punched repeatedly in the head. he was also hit with a taser three times. officers claim dent was resisting arrest and threatened to kill them. a judge looked at the video and threw out the charges of assault and resisting arrest against

him. >> i'm just getting emotional because what i had to go through and where i am at now, you know i can't believe it. >> another issue in that case was the fact that police claim that they found cocaine in his car but dent says the officers put it there. the officer who found the cocaine was charged and acquitted years ago of planting evidence. well he was one of the fraternity brothers leading a racist chant that went viral. now levi pettit is apologizing for what he did at the university of oklahoma and is promising to work with civil rights leader. >> i've had a mix of so you we are, shame and fear over the consequences of my actions. i never thought of myself as a racist never even considered it a possibility. but the words said in that chant were mean hateful and racist. >> pettit would not say who taught him that chant but in any

case university reached a deal to ensure that no more students involved would be expelled. new tonight, powdered alcohol will not be for sale in the state of maryland. they have agreed to a voluntary ban. the powder form of alcohol can be dissolved in a beverage but some fear it could be snorted or abused by minors. virginia has also banned that powder. an airman from maryland is back home tonight after months on a special mission to afghanistan. he thought his return would be simple but his friends and family had bigger plans. shomari stone has a homecoming surprise. >> hello! >> a surprise look is on jet coverdale's face at his hometown church he thought he was going to bible study. >> it's definitely good to be back. didn't expect this at all.

>> what are the odds that he tried some of that cake? >> he probably ate the whole thing. >> what are the odds that we're going to have a decent day tomorrow? >> i'm going to say 100%. >> okay. >> and that's going to be the thing. it's not going to rain all day. we see showers early andsunshine. we've seen the warmest days so far this year and the storms wait until tomorrow night. the storms today have been pretty strong out to the west. right now, take a look at the current numbers. we're still on the mild side. 50 degrees. winds out of the south at 5 miles per hour under mostly cloudy skies. we'll continue to see those milder temperatures. 46 in leesburg. 47 fredericksburg. storm team 4 radar is clear in our area and will be for most of the night. the chance of showers comes in early tomorrow morning. take a look back to the west. look at the storm moving our way. big-time severe thunderstorms even a couple of tornadoes. let's take a look at this video right around the tulsa area

where they have not just tornadoes. look at this. a huge tornado. this tornado at one time was upwards of half a mile wide. every one of those flashes is the power transformer coming down. a lot of damage in that area. softball-sized hail reported in the tulsa area. now let's show you what the temperatures were. you need warm air to get the storms like that and you had it today. 80 in dallas, oklahoma 77 in memphis, near 80 in jackson, mississippi. that air, that very warm air is headed our way tomorrow and will allow us to see a chance for some thundershowers although we're not talking anything severe for us. tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m. best chance of rain and showers down to the south. fredericksburg southern maryland around 9:00 a.m. i-95 east is the best chance. west you're not going to see much at all from this. then we break out. watch the clouds give way to

sunshine tomorrow afternoon and that's when our numbers just skyrocket. we're going to get into the low to mid-70s. some areas, upper 70s before we see the frontal boundary come through. that brings us a chance for thundershowers. we're still dry in d.c. through almost 8:00 and the heaviest rain comes in around 9:00 10:00, 11:00 tomorrow night. we're in for a very warm day tomorrow night. 75 in d.c. 72 in mar tinsburg. it will be cooler along the bay. we cool quickly down to 51 on friday 30% chance of a.m. shower activity. a flurry or two on saturday. high temperature on saturday only 42 degrees. but we don't stay that cold. windchills on saturday in the low to mid-30s. but we warm rapidly back to around 60 degrees by monday. tuesday, around 56. did doreen leave because she lost her voice? >> yes.
