duty. at times speakers struggled to control their tears honoring 18 police officers who died protecting the city of alexandria alexandria. they all share a memorial steps from the police department. this is where darcy spencer was at the dead kigs. >> private eugene yokum. >> reporter: 18 officers who died in the line of duty in al alexandria since the 1800s read one by one. >> private whitfield lincecum. >> reporter: those officers forever remembered on a glass memorial dedicated in their honor outside the police department. >> men and women of this police department i hope this is always a place of reflection and may we never place another in memorial at this location. >> reporter: one of the names, detective conrad bernie her daughter who later became an officer spoke at the ceremony. >> i was 12 years old when he died and 42 years of his death

he is the most important person in hi life. >> reporter: the memorial was years in the making and looked like it might not happen. ken howard a member of the police foundation is thankful for the generous donations that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> it is very personal. i was involved in some of the incidents where some of these officers died. >> reporter: officer george w. crump died in 1893. tonight his great grandson was here for this dedication. >> kind of unique. very humble to go up there and put the flower in the wreath. >> reporter: the honor guard did a three-round volley of shots. >> aim, fire! >> reporter: and bagpipes played. the memorial lit up at night for the first time providing a place to think about the sacrifices made by these fallen officers. darcy spencer, news 4.

we're learning some new details of a police officer involved in a shooting. late last night d.c. police got a call about an armed robbery on eastern avenue. the suspects were a car a short distance away and after a short chase two bailed out and one fired. police caught one other boy but the third suspect got away. right now, a major road is shut down for serious accident with a man and a child in prince georges county. police have closed addison road after a car lost control and hate tree. the driver died and the child is serious condition. we'll have more on the crash tomorrow morning on news 4 today. we're also learning new details of a big fight that broke out in a 7-eleven parking lot and left a man dead. this attack happened this morning in leesburg outside of a store. a group of people got into a

brawl after hanging out at a sports bar earlier in the night. a man was stabbed in the leg and died. police took several in custody and two of them wanted on outstanding warrants. investigators say seven people shot at a spring break party were innocent victims who happened to be in the wrong place. they were all at a house party at panama city beach where a fight broke out and someone started shooting. police say they had a hard time controlling the crowds in florida. >> when several thousand drunken breakers gather up with the special events it gets almost impossible to control them. >> some of the victims are college students visiting on spring break. police arrested a man from alabama and he's been charged with attempted murder. new at 11:00, two dozen passengers were hurt when this commuter train hit a car near downtown los angeles. the force impact caused four

rail cars to partially derail. everyone had minor injuries except for the train operator who was seriously hurt. it looks as if the car turned in front of the train even though the train had a warning on the side that read heads up, watch for trains. right now, the calendar says we are a week into spring. the thermometer from the news 4 patio camera says something else entirely. tonight we are flirting with record low temperatures. amelia how cold could it get? >> chris, looking at low temperatures tonight in the 20s across the area. now, the record to break at washington and bwi marshall is 18 degrees. both of those record lows were set back in 1923. we'll come close and i don't think we'll set record lows there. dulles, the record is 20s set back in 1982 and might get to 20 or 19 degrees. here's the low temperature in your neighborhood tomorrow morning. 26 in washington. 20 in gaithersburg.

25 in fredericksburg. now, after a cold start, chris, it is warmer than today. i'll let you know by how much coming up. police tell us a stabbing in gaithersburg may have been a revenge attack for another stabbing that happened thursday. police arrested rosa ramirez last night for allegedly stabbing a man at education boulevard. investigators say the victim's a suspect in another stabbing that happened thursday night in the same area. that started off as an argument of two people walking down the street who didn't know each other. investigators now say a robbery near the university of maryland was not a random crime. police issued a warning to student this is morning about a robbery on knox road. a group of masked men forced their way into an apartment and robbed the five students living there. the men had a knife and bb gun but they didn't hurt the students. been a horrible accident at a recycling center in maryland and a man got his legs tangled up in a conveyor belt and

firefighters pulled him out of the machine. getting the center he was conscious and breathing but in tremendous pain. he suffered serious traumatic injuries to both injuries and expected to survive. a new report discovered that toxic emissions in virginia increased first time in seven years. the report says in 2013 power plants and other operations released about 36 million pounds of dangerous chemicals. that's up 10% from the year before. and officials blame increased production. but the report found that bae systems in montgomery county maryland released the most toxins. well it's one of the most shared stories on the facebook page and pretty easy to see why. you'll meet two of the newest additions to the national zoo. a new vision test could help clear up the concussion concerns for young athletes. find out how it works. indiana's governor under fire for a law some say could be used to discriminate against

when it comes to diagnosing concussions in kids sports a new test could eliminate some guess work. it's an inexpensive eye test that takes two minutes. new york university researchers found the test that a 75% accuracy rate of diagnosing concussions. so it could be a valuable tool especially at kids games where doctors are rarely on the sidelines. >> under normal conditions how long? >> 37 seconds. >> after a concussion? >> 42 to 45 seconds. >> researchers say you can do this test on kids as young as 5 years old and if you combine it

with balance and thinking tests, there's a 97% accuracy rate. one hour tonight, the lights went off across the world including right here in the nation's capital. the national cathedral and even city buildings in rockville took part in earth hour. and they weren't alone. cities in famous landmarks dark for an hour this evening. the world wildlife fund started to send a message it takes everyone working together affect climate change. protesters in indiana fired up over a religious freedom law and tonight new reaction from the governor. plus we'll all enjoy some warmer weather in the coming days

well as you can see the protests did not let up in indiana today. there's been a lot of criticism since the governor signed a bill which could allow businesses to stand on their religious beliefs and refuse to serve gay and lesbian customers. the governor says he supporting legislation to clarify the intent of the law and he expects that bill to be introduced next week. we get more tonight from gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: outside the indiana state capital today, a wave of fury. >> i think it's absolutely going back to the dark ages. >> i don't think religion should be in business. we shouldn't be able to discriminate on whoever we want. >> reporter: on thursday indiana's governor signed a bill that would allow businesses to

deny service based on their religious beliefs. >> this bill is not about discrimination. and if i thought it legalized discrimination i would have vetoed. >> reporter: 0 poe me ents say it would legalize discrimination. >> basically says to a group of people you're second rate. you don't matter. and if you walk into my store i don't have to serve you. >> reporter: the backlash spread across social media. apple ceo tweeting apple's open for everyone. we're deeply disappointed in indiana's new law. ahead of the final four indianapolis the ncaa released a statement. we are especially concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees. indiana is now one of 20 states with so-called religious freedom laws. some feel the concerns are overblown. lisa owns a flower shop. >> i have thought a lot about this.

facebook page and didn't get maybe ten likes. >> wow. >> no one's impressed with the temperatures. record cold temperatures are possible in spots tomorrow but no matter how you cut it it's cold. temperatures tomorrow morning are going to be in the 20s. but we will warm up to a high temperature of 49 so that's warmer than today. but that's still a 10 degrees below where we should be this time of year and a weather headline. for the upcoming week minor rain chances. nothing major. no snow chances in the forecast. and the good news after tomorrow for the majority of the week we'll see high temperatures in the 60s. we flirt with 70 degrees on friday. now, tomorrow the weather having a relatively low impact on the day. although cold there's plenty of sunshine and as well as you have a warm jacket sunglasses you are fine. this is where temperatures are at right now. 30 degrees in winchester. leesburg and annapolis. washington now at freezing and culpepper at 28. and any breezy conditions out

there diminish overnight. winds tomorrow are not an issue and clouds continue to clear out of the area. so that means it's a sunny day tomorrow. that will be the bright spot of the weather forecast. but 7:00 a.m. temperatures in the mid-20s. mid-30s for the midday hours, near 50 by 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. we are at a temperature of 45 and walking the dog, stale chill in the air and not as cold as it was today and the wind's not an issue. monday thinking about the kids off to school. a shower possible at the bus stop and then after that it's mainly dry, warmer. dismissal is good to get outside. rain chance monday morning. future weather at 3:00 a.m. notice light snow for areas north of washington with that shower chance and by 7:00 8:00 9:00 a.m. the threat of a shower is over. look at the amp. we start to see sunny skies evolve across the area so a high temperature on monday of 64 degrees. really not a bad day at all. tuesday, a high temperature around 60. clouds will slowly increase

throughout the day and there could be a shower around in the afternoon hours but notice the chance of dealing with the shower on monday and tuesday. only 30%. so that is quite low. wednesday, a high temperature of 56 degrees. with mostly sunny skies. and for thursday it's partly sunny, a high temperature of 65 degrees. this is nice. 69 on friday so near 70 degrees. it is looking like some rain is likely on friday but we'll continue to work on that timing. next saturday, rain is looking to be likely. temperatures will be a little bit cooler, a high around 60. starting with the 20s tomorrow morning and i'll be in on news 4 today for updates. >> bundle up tomorrow and maybe that's it for the bitter cold. >> fingers crossed. >> yeah. all right. still ahead, a sophomore steps
