consequences. the fbi blooefs it wasn't terrorism but had to be terrifying for those who witnessed it. a car drove up to one of the most secure places in the area. the two men inside the suv were dressed as women. a statement released by the nsa says the driver didn't follow an nsa police officer's inspections to leave the area. instead the car sped up and headed toward an nsa police vehicle. damage to both vehicles indicates there was a collision. nsa officers opened fire on the unauthorized suv and one of the men inside died on the scene. the agency says the cause of death hasn't been determined. the other man was take on the hospital along with one of the nsa police officers. a gun and drugs were found inside the suv according to authorities. the business of national security went on inside the nsa, but a wide perimeter went up around the already highly secured facility.

the fbi says they're leading the investigation out of the baltimore field office. we talked about the perimeter of security that already exists. we reached out to the department of defense to see if they had any plans to change the security profile here. at this point they say there are no conferrings to do anything like that. as we said it seems this is an anned a ver tent encroachment upon security that ended up fatal for one of the suspects. more on the story coming up on news4 at 6:00. back to you. >> derrick ward, thank you. let's go to pat lawson muse at the live desk with mu details on the injuries in this crash and shooting. >> we now know that audio from the dispatch calls between first responders indicates one of the suspects was a 20-year-old man. >> one suspect being transported shotgun wound. >> male gunshot trauma.

investigators spent today hoping to learn what went wrong. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey live at the teen's high school now. >> reporter: students tell me it was uncharacteristically quiet inside river bend high school today. they were dealing with a range of emotions in the wake of this tragedy. there was grief. there was shock. but there was admiration too, for this classmate who was so passionate about something that he was flying solo at the age of 16. meantime about 20 miles away in orange investigators were back at the crash site looking for clues. this was the scene just east of the orange airport this afternoon. investigators from the ntsb faa, and virginia state police continued to examine the wreckage. state police also released these photos showing the damage to the 40-year-old piper aircraft. the nose mangled. 16-year-old ryan mccaul was flying solo sunday morning, something he's legally permitted to do. his flight instructor from skyline aviation was watching when just after takeoff the

plane banked to the left and went down. ryan was killed. as the young pilot's classmates returned to river bend high school this morning, most had learned of the tragedy. the spotsylvania county school district had sent notice home on sunday and were prepared to help students throughout this difficult day. >> we are seeing some students coming in for additional support. we've also posted a link on our website that has resources to dealing with grief. >> reporter: this river bend mother says her son knew the crash victim's brother. ryan was a sophomore. his brothers on either side of him in 9th and 11th grades. she says her son shaken by the tragedy stayed home today because he got little sleep last night. >> it's pretty sad. just, you know anytime the students have to deal with saying good-bye to somebody that, you know they knew at school and knowing that they're not going to see them anymore. i think it hits the kids really hard. >> reporter: the mccaul family is asking for privacy but released a statement that reads in part "ryan was our beloved

middle son, a typical teenager whom we loved so much and who himself had such a passion for flying that he had already earned his license to pilot at the young age of 16." and i'm told ryan had his sights set on the air force someday. coming up on news4 at 6:00, a look at the rules for young pilots. back to you in the studio. two drivers recovering tonight after a deadly crash in fairfax county this weekend. officials say dillbar nouri lost control of his car on lee chapel road just south of the fairfax county parkway shortly before 6:00 yesterday and he crossed into the oncoming lanes, hit two other vehicles before coming to a stop. police say nouri was died at the scene. others were take on the hospital, nonlife-threatening injuries. investigators believe speed played a role in this crash. now to the murder of a man just blocks from his home in a neighborhood where residents have been asking for more police presence. news4's mark segraves lives in

northwest with more on this story for us. mark? >> reporter: jim, this is the intersection where the man was shot and killed here in brightwood. we're just off of georgia avenue. it was early this morning, the 34-year-old victim was walking home crossing this street when he was confronted by two men wearing ski masks. friend and family of the victim gathered this afternoon at the spot where antonio allayaia was killed. neighbors who awoke to a crime scene outside their home say they feel safe in this neighborhood but crime seems to be getting worse. >> for someone to be shot right here, that surprises me in one way, but it does not in others because there need to be more police presence in this area and it's not. >> reporter: according to police and witnesses, the 34-year-old ayala was walking home along van buren street about 2:30 this morning when two men wearing ski masks tried to rob him and his friends. at some point, one of the

suspects fired his gun, hitting alaia in the chest. he died later at howard university hospital. the gunman got away. alaia was just a few blocks from his home on 13th street when he was killed. >> doesn't make me feel very comfortable at all, but i'm not a prisoner in the house. i still come out. just hope nothing happens. >> reporter: people who live in this neighborhood have been complaining about a recent spike in shootings in the petworth and brightwood neighborhoods they've started an online petition asking mayor bowser for help. >> i am sorry to hear about a shooting here and that a crime took place here. but to ask me am i really really really surprised, no. >> reporter: now, there have been at least 17 reports of shots fired in these neighborhoods in just the past three months. coming up at 6:00 you'll hear from the victim's brother as well as one of the men who was with the victim when he was shot. he'll describe what took place here last night. back to you.

they called their first witness to the stand late this afternoon after the prosecution rested and looked at text and phone evidence. the defense is not expected to focus on whether dzhokhar tsarnaev is guilty. instead, they'll be working to spare him the death penalty, claiming his older brother was the mastermind. things are getting back to normal this evening after that jetblue computer outage created delays for thousands of travelers. this was system wide and it forced airline employees to check in the passengers manually handwriting the boarding passes so you can just imagine. according to flight aware, the airline had more than 250 flights di delayed today, which included long lines here at reagan national in boston and down in orlando. it's coming down to the wire tomorrow the deadline for an agreement over the future of iran's nuclear program. right now the u.s. and several other world powers are in intense negotiations in

switzerland. secretary of state john kerry says all parties are working hard to come up with a framework for an agreement. they're working on terms that would curb iran's nuclear activities in exchange for some relief in sanctions. a church of 200 is coming together tonight to pray and to console each other after a van crashed, killing eight members and injuring ten others. that van crashed off a highway and landed in a canal in moor haven as members drove home from palm sunday services an hour west of ft. myers, florida. one of the survivors said the driver appeared to hit something in the road before losing control. most of the people in the hospital are said to be in critical condition. it was one false step and then high-pitched screams after witnesses recorded a firefighter who fell through the roof of a burning garage. this is the scene in fresno california. that firefighter is a 25-year veteran. he was ventilating the roof when it collapsed and it took three

people. >> she was one of two women victimized by a man sentenced today in an hiv expo shirt case. >> 28-year-old daniel cleaves of virginia met and had consensual sex with a woman who was shock when she found papers in his possession saying cleaves was hiv positive. he was charged with several counts of transferring hiv to another after a second woman went to police saying he had unprotected sex with her and never told her he was hiv positive. his lawyer said he did not intend to hurt the women. >> we have medical proof because of the medications he's taking his ability to transfer the virus is nearly zero. >> reporter: the lawyer showed me cleaves' lab test results taken at the montgomery county jail in february showing hiv not detected. to avoid a court battle over whether he knowingly posed a risk of infection, prosecutors

and child negligent. the pair and a 17-year-old girl robbed a man after a the two young women asked the fim hymn for a ride in woodbridge yesterday afternoon. the child was found safe after police found coleman's wallet at the scene of the crime. montgomery county schools decide whether to spend $7 million to fix furnaces. a news4 i-team investigation earlier this month revealed the district had nearly $200 million in heating and cooling systems that need to be repaired and replaced. at 6:00, the school board will vote on plans to make replacements at five schools including rolling terrace elementary where the i i found an hvac system report le l.e.d. to reports of stupid mold illnesses. a challenge to an affordable care act board that critics called a death panel. the supreme court will not hear it. that case questioned the conditions tugs nal hi ty of a board that is designed to limit spending growth in medicare.

no fix to it. you just get rid of it. >> 19 over states have similar religious freedom laws. indiana's measure is set to take effect on the first of july. i'm pat lawson muse at the live kesing. there is new fallout over the new law in the district. there is a statement calling on the mayor to ban the use of any public funds on travel to indiana. the growing criticism from those across the country encouraging people and company not to spend money in indiana. state's new law will allow businesses to refuse to serve people based on sexual orientation on the basis of religious beliefs. the state's new law has sparked protests and a new effort by lawmakers to clarify that language. michelle obama and laura bush are joining forces this week part of a new campaign to draw a younger, more diverse group of visitors to our

viewers called police with some new information. >> prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins is near race track road in bowie where this crash happened. tracee what have you learned? >> reporter: for most of the day we had no idea who the two people were who were in this atv accident. but park police tell us that they were able to identify the man, then after our 4:00 p.m. started mccauliffing in saying they thought they knew who that woman was. now her family is rushing to the hospital to try and i.d. her if indeed she is the family member who's been missing. plu but police say they are still investigating exactly what happened on this trail. >> someone who lives in the neighborhood heard a noise. >> i was getting in that getting ready to fall asleep mode. >> they discovered an african-american female that has been in an atv accident. >> john shenski says he'll never forget the scene shortly before 2:00 a.m. on the wp&a trail

behind his home. a deadly single-vehicle accident involving a four-wheeler atv. >> the man lay right there and the woman right over there. >> reporter: the man was already dead. >> it was pretty obvious. no movement no nothing. just that blank stare. >> reporter: and the woman was suffering severe head trauma. >> just drug her up and i didn't know at that point, well leave her sitting, you know, i just laid her down. and then i seen it was pretty serious that they need to hurry up and come. >> reporter: the woman was transported to the hospital but for most of the day police did not know who these people were because they had no i.d. now the man has been identify as 23-year-old bran on the barnes of prince george's county. the woman is still pending. >> i'm sure, you know somebody's been waiting, you know for these people to come home to them you know at one point. >> reporter: -- unregulated vehicles on our streets.

tracee wilkins reporting live. more families are showing up at the site of the germanwings crash in the french alps and we're learning more about the co-pilot who apparently caused the tragedy. prosecutors today said andreas lubitz had been treated for suicidal tendencies before he became a pilot and had several follow-up appointments with doctor who is documented that he was unable to work or to fly. authorities also say they haven't found any recent letters or other evidence about a possible motive for the crash and there's no other evidence he was planning to hurt himself or others. a move by the supreme court could bring virginia closer to redrawing its congressional map. today the high court sent a gerrymandering case back to a three-judge panel for reconsideration. last fall that panel found that the republicans focused on race when they were drawing up congressional districts. they ordered legislators to

looking good. evening maybe a few showers so caution, yeah use caution for some of those wet roadways that will be out there between, say, 4:00 and 7:00 around the d.c. metro area. just something to keep in mind. what to wear tomorrow what do you need well maybe the jacket early. it will be cool not the coat and how about the umbrella good idea to take wit you. you won't need it most of the day. not for breakfast or lunch. you may need it for dinner. the biking forecast 61 degrees at 1:00. we're dry then see the chance of showers moving in later in the evening. not expecting a lot of rain on the day tomorrow but we'll see some of those showers. 56 degrees on wednesday as we get cooler air coming in. but right as that moves in we start to see the warmer air move back up from the southwest, a high of 72 on thursday 72 degrees coming up on friday. a good chance of rain on friday. friday i think has the best chance to see some significant rain maybe even a couple of thunderstorms out there.

almost 6 million americans have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder characterized by shifts in energy and activity levels. for anyone who has a family member or loved one suffering from this condition, getting them the help they need can be a big challenge. tonight we're meeting one woman who turned the stress of being a caregiver into advocating for other families who are struggling for help. alisa bernard knows how tough it can be to find the right treatment for bipolar disorder because she's watched one of her family members struggle with the illness for years. but instead of sitting back and dwelling on what can be a scary and stressful situation, she decided to take that energy and use it to help others. i know a lot. i've done a lot of reading. i've spoke on the a lot of people. so when you're on the front lines, you gather all that information, and you use it and you use it for better. >> she started doing advocacy work for the international bipolar foundation meeting with senators congressmen, and

why did that driver refuse to stop and why did he drive into that security gate off the b.w. parkway? >> reporter: yes, and we are able to confirm at this point that the body has, indeed been removed from the scene, but it remains a crime scene. after speaking with one of the representatives of nsa, they are not able to confirm yet whether that gate will be open tomorrow. you know this is a broad investigation and it is even broadening more in scope. howard county police confirm this suv was stolen from a hotel in jessup maryland before it ended up here outside the gate to the national security agency at ft. meade. sources tell news4 that the two occupants are from the baltimore area. and one of them is dead. the men in that vehicle were dressed as women. a statement from nsa says the driver did follow the instructions from an nsa police officer at the gate and that he instead drove toward an
