we're following two breaking news stories at this hour. the first a large scale search for this man, a prisoner who overpowered a guard at a va hospital this morning and is now on the loose. i'm barbara harrison, you're watching news 4 midday. >> we're also getting new information on another breaking story, a police chase in the middle of rush hour. . what we now know about the woman dragged from the vehicle. we begin with the escaped prisoner. police in large number. s are in a neighborhood right now searching for this man consider canned armed and dangerous. darcy spencer is watching the police activity and has been

following the story all morning long. what do you know now? >> reporter: good morning, we have been following this police search all morning from neighborhood to neighborhood to neighborhood. we are now live and you can hear the helicopter flying above us in this neighborhood. let's go to some video we shot a short time ago to give you an idea how intense this search was. we were told by members of swath s.w.a.t. to stay in our live truck. they were going through yards going door to door. obviously, looking for this suspect, who has alluded police since 3:00 this morning. a still photographer was threatened with arrest if he didn't get back in his car. that's how intense this manhunt is here this morning. it's all about the man who is the alleged bicycle bandit. he was locked up last week by federal authorities robbing banks. he was sent to jail. apparently, he made a suicide

attempt so then sent to fairfax hospital. early this morning, he overpowered a couple guards and a shot was fired and made off in a hospital gown with that gun. since that time, he's allegedly carjacked two vehicles. earlier he was in a toyota camry. that was later found abandoned in a neighborhood not too far from where we are. search was done of the area. the car was recovered but he's nowhere to be found. we do believe that he did carjack a second vehicle and that description was put out, a 2008 grey hyundai. the question is was this planned out, was it someone helping him, police have put out a picture of his girlfriend hoping to get some information. so if you see her as well as him, they don't know if possibly he was able to change clothes, if someone is helping him. he may not be in that hospital gown anymore.

the search is continuing here on whispering lane. the helicopter is -- we don't know if he is on foot or in that car. a very intense manhunt at this hour trying to get him in custody before anyone else gets hurt. back to you. z. >> reporter: it has been a crazy morning here in falls church. the hospital behind me is now open, but like i said, it's been a crazy morning. i want to kind of get you updated on what happened out here this morning. at about 3:00 this gentleman that police are looking for took over two guards here and got ahold of a gun. at that point in time, the hospital went into lockdown. this is one of the most respected and largest hospitals here in the area. more than 883 beds. the hospital inside was on lockdown, folks outside didn't

know what to do. a number of people got reverse 911 calls. we were here through the whole thing. this part of the hospital near the women's center and this particular garage were points of emphasis. e we saw the s.w.a.t. team, local police, we saw guns drawn in a really, really kind of volatile situation. and as we have seen this play out, we have seen police move from location to location. really without any clue of exactly where this guy is. the residents i talked to, we'll hear from one of these residents shortly, were really fearful about this. there's apartment homes just behind this parking garage r a number of those residents were woken up to the sound of helicopters at 3:30 this morning. what do you do? they were told to stay inside the house and that's exactly what they did. i informed them that this guy is still out there, they were quite

today we're expecting to hear more about the shooting at the nsa complex in fort meade. according to police two men wearing wigs and women's clothing drove through exit lanes and past barriers in an attempt to get inside. the complex. the suspects then slammed a police car blocking their way. one of the men was killed another in critical condition. police say the car the men used was stolen. we're also being told that there was a a gun and drugs inside that car. a police officer was also hurt, but is expected to be okay. police fired shots a at a man trying to get away are from officers during a traffic stop. this started just before 11:00 last night. the driver took off and police cornered him at a second location. the suspect then drove toward the officer and the officer opened fire. the suspect drove away again. this ended just before 1:00 this morning when the suspect crashed

dark gray. pat collins is live on the scene in annandale. what are you seeing? >> reporter: this is one of the biggest manhunts i can remember in our area since the search for the snipers years ago. police are out here in force. they are on motorcycles, cars, trucks, search dogs, they have the u.s. marshals out here, fbi, fairfax police virginia state police, there's a helicopter above. they are looking for this 32-year-old, an escapee from the hospital who made his break this morning. he stole a car. he has a gun. it was a camry car. he ditched that car here in annandale and then he stole yet another car identified as a gray hyundai elantra. police are looking for him in this annandale neighborhood.

this is what the fairfax police had to say about the case just moments ago. >> again understand the fairfax county police department was not involved in his custody wherever he was being held. we were not involved in his transportation to the hospital for his medical treatment. the way we became involved was when we were called this morning because he escaped the custody of the people that were responsible for him. those are details that our investigators will continue to look into, but at this point the focus remains protect inging the public is and apprehending the suspect. >> reporter: now fairfax police are saying that this suspect, who left the hospital with a guard's gun wearing a hospital gown and the gun in his hand and bare feet is now believed to be in street clothes. how he got the street clothes, we don't know. but again, this massive manhunt continues out here in the annandale area for this escapee. when we get more details, i'll be back with you.

indiana's new religious freedom law is spilling on to the front pages pages. the headline reads fix this now. it's the title of an editorial calling for indiana to give the gay community protected status. some fear the businesses discriminate against the gay community. many other states have similar laws, but gays there have legal protections. governor pence defends the law saying it allows to pushback on government overreach. a peaceful rally is planned for tonight in bloomington. amid-the growing backlash, virginia's governor is hoping to recruit indiana businesses. companies like apple have spoken out against the state r for adopting the law. they invited companies to take advantage of virginia's open and thriving business environment. a a delightful end to march with sunshine now and there are some showers beginning to move closer to us coming into the the mountains from the north and west. ahead of that we have increasing clouds. right now the leading edge of

we're following break news in fairfax county where police are on a massive manhunt for wossen assaye. we have been following the breaking news all morning long. he escaped from a hospital not long before we went on the air, but we have known about him for some time. last weak e we told you that the fbi arrested assaye. he would rob banks while holding a cell phone and escape on bike. agents believe he may have robbed as many as 12 banks starting back as far as october

of 2013. you can see here this is a list all throughout northern virginia. the fbi arrested him -- there we go. the fbi arrested him and took him into custody a day after he robbed a credit union in alexandria. sheriffs told us he then attempted suicide and was transferred to the hospital four days ago. now this morning, we first heard about the news at 3:30 this morning about that escape. . we sent reporters to fairfax and they learned there was an active shooting investigation going on at 4:36 this morning. almost exactly an hour later, we knew it was assaye police were looking for. police are still conducting that search right now. news 4 is working for you, we'll be bringing you updates throughout the newscast. download our app on your smart phone as well. we'll send you push alerts with the latest developments. it has been a busy morning for fairfax county police.

good morning to you, i'm david culver. a car chase ended on this overpass. we need to stress this is not related to the fairfax incident that we have been telling you about. still the images from this is something you'd see in a hollywood film. not something we'd see here in northern virginia. chopper 4 picks up the chase on 95 south. three cruisers on the driver's tail. state police and officers keeping close. then a dramatic swerve across three lanes. the pickup narrowly making the exit. the chase continues northbound on the parkway. then watch this. a u-turn through the dirt-covered median. the driver then fish tails into the rush hour traffic. the cruisers keeping close. farther north a driver swurves on a median and clips a police car. it doesn't stop there. notice the driver's persistence.

police trying to pin the vehicle against the concrete barrier of the parkway overpass. you can see for yourself how in perfect sin kronization the cruisers corner the pickup. police then surround the woman, guns drawn and take her into custody. and through police sources i have learned a little more about that suspect. we're told she was wanted out of arlington county for two charges, felony charges credit card fraud and identity theft. three officers, by the way were hurt in that crash. they are being treated for minor injuries. david culver, news 4. >> thank you, david. we are learning this morning the co-pilot accused of taking down flight 9525 was treated for suicidal thoughts. authorities say andreas lubitz purposely crashed that plane heading from spain to germany. it's now believed that he lock

darcy spencer is watch inging the activity in an annandale neighborhood as the search continues. tell us what you have seen so far. >> reporter: good morning a little bit of new information. police saying the suspect may no long er longer be in a hospital gown. what this means is he may have somehow gotten his hands on some clothing, so he's able to blend in a little better, making it even harder for investigators and s.w.a.t. team members as they are trying to find him. this manhunt has been going on since the 3:00 hour. still no sign of him right now. the video we're showing this is one of the areas where he stole a a second vehicle. he's been involved in stealing two cars today. the second vehicle was taken from a home. it's a hyundai elantra. earlier today he took a toyota camry from a house and apparently a woman was driving the car. she didn't realize he was in the car. when she realized it she got so

scared and wrecked and crashed into a car that was parked in a driveway. earlier we spoke to the homeowner. >> i was just getting ready to heard the work and heard a screech screech. as a car came over, i didn't hear anything because it was right in my front yard. then i heard a big slam and heard a lady screaming like crazy. >> reporter: so again, the name of the suspect, wossen assaye, escaped from the hospital early this morning after an apparent suicide attempt. able to overpower guards. these were private guards that were supposed to be watching over him. he got away with a gun one shot was fired fortunately nobody was hurt, but they have been look ing looking for him ever since. is he getting help as he alludes police? we're sending it over to zachary who has been following the story from the hospital since this morning. >> reporter: thank you, darcy. the hospital is open now, but

imagine waking up in the middle of the night with helicopters hovering above r your house for hours on end. even better yet you wake up to the sound of a telephone call, reverse 911 calls went out saying to stay in the house. that's what happened in falls church this morning. a lot of local residents i had an opportunity to talk to. >> the prisoner escaped and it was scary. >> reporter: wossen assaye was admitted to the hospital last friday after trying to commit suicide. around 3:00 a.m. he overpowered a private security guard and took their gun. >> it was like 3:30 a.m. we heard the helicopters. >> reporter: one of the area's largest and most respected hospitals went into lockdown. s.w.a.t. team local police guns drawn, but assaye slipped out. >> stole a vehicle at a

in southern maryland. showers in the mountains. this area those are some rain showers moving rather quickly. it's going to take awhile before they get into the metro area later on this afternoon. a man in our area died after a police officer tased him in culpepper, virginia. culpepper police officers found dominic wise walking in circles on bell avenue this weekend. when they tried to get him out of the street, he ran away and was then tased while fighting officers trying to arrest him. he was 30 years old. police have not released the name of the officer who tased him. prince georges county police fired shots at a man trying to get away froms aufrlgs during a traffic stop. it it started just before 11:00 last night. the driver took off and police cornered him at a second location. the second drove toward the officer and the officer opened fire. the suspect drove away. he ended up just before 1:00 this morning when the suspect crashed his car into. a tree near wheeler road in temple hills. that's when it was over. the suspect is expected to be

i'm pat collins in fairfax county. it appears that the end to this story is in d.c. a few minutes ago a high law enforcement source told me that the escapee has been apprehended many the district without incident. they say that arrest occurred on pennsylvania avenue southeast. now this came after hours and hours of a massive manhunt here in fairfax county. the object of the manhunt wossen assaye is an alleged bank robber. he's the alleged bicycle bandit. he escaped from fairfax hospital at gunpoint. he wrestled a gun away from a guard and then carjacked a car. he dumped that car and then he

carjacked a second car. this has been a massive manhunt involving the fbi, u.s. marshals, virginia state police and fairfax county police. they have swormed to this annandale neighborhood looking for him, but then a few moments ago i was told by a high law enforcement source that this man wossen assaye has been arrested without incident in the district of columbia. we'll have more details as they become available, but it appears now this manhunt is over. now back to you. i'm david culver coming to you live from springfield virginia, where a dramatic car chase ended on this overpass behind me. i can tell you this is not related to the incident pat was just talking about with the escapee. it's it been a busy morning for fairfax police. the suspect in this case, a woman is out on charges. she's wanted in arlington county

for credit card fraud and identity theft. this morning she could be facing a whole list of new charges. this is how it all ended. police smashing open the driver side window pulling the woman out and cuffing her on the ground. behind me on the parkway, you ermath of that crash. over my shoulder, that's the pickup truck. then several police cruisers also damaged. we have learned three police officers have been injuried in this crash. one of them was taken to the hospital. all of them expected to be okay. chopper 4 picks up the chase on 95 south. three cruisers on the driver's tail. state police and officers keeping close. then a dramatic swerve across three highway lanes. the driver swerves on a raised median and clips a police car. but it doesn't stop there. notice the driver's persistence. you can see for yourself how in perfect cinchnization they

blustery wind. temperatures in the 60s. warmer weather moves in thursday and friday up around 70 degrees. some showers and some thunder showers likely on friday afternoon and evening. after that the easter weekend looking good. 40s in the morning, 50s on saturday. sunday into the low 60s. and monday back into the upper 60s. one of our weather alarms going off. we'll fine out what's going on with that. a huge development in indiana today. governor pence held a presser asking for what he calls a, quote, fix for the state's controversial new religious freedom law. he said flat out indiana businesses cannot deny services to the gay community. the governor has faced a huge uproar over this law. some say it legalizes discrimination. many states have similar laws but have legal protections for gay people. pence says the bill was only intended to give people the opportunity to pushback on government overreach, but he also says the law has a, quote, image problem.

monday upper 60s. >> thank you, tom. we're following that breaking news. a manhunt is over. a high ranking law enforcement official tells news 4 officers arrested wossen assaye in the district on pennsylvania avenue southeast. he escaped from a fairfax hospital. he was on the run for nine hours. darcy spencer is live u with more. >> reporter: that's the news that everybody has been waiting to hear. the good news i've also confirmed this information that he was arrested without incident. there was a lot of concern because when he got away from the hospital this morning, he was able to get a gun away from a private security guard. so you had a man running around in a hospital gown armed with a gun. carjacking vehicles, so they were afraid this wasn't going to end without someone getting

hurt. so it sounds like this came to a peaceful conclusion. this goes back to the 3:00 hour this morning when he was able to o overpower a couple security guards, private guards hired to watch over him. he was in federal custody. he was known as the bicycle bandit. he was arrested last week for a string of bicycle thefts in the area. authorities telling us this morning he had apparently tried to take his own life, so that's why he was at the hospital. and then he saw a chance to make his move early this morning and to escape. so he had been on the run all day long and had carjacked a couple of vehicles. there was a camry that was stolen earlier today. a woman was driving the car. she didn't even know she had gotten into her car. she wrecked the car and was able to escape. he took off in that car. he left it in a neighborhood, carjacked another car it was a hyundai. somehow ended up in the district

of columbia. we don't know how he was getting around after that, but he was spotted there. i'm told again, by high ranking officials that he was arrested without incident. so he is back in custody. the good news here is that no one was hurt throughout this entire ordeal. there was a shot that was fired early this morning inside the hospital in that room when he tried to wrestle the gun. away from these guards. one shot was fired, but we're told no one was hit. no reports of him firing that gun that he stole from the guards and was on the run for about nine hours. we are waiting a press conference from fairfax county police will be updating us with the latest information at the noon hour and hoping to find out additional information in terms of what he did, why he did it, and how he was getting around this morning and endsed up in the district. >> darcy, you have been reporting on the story all morning long. police tweeted a picture of the suspect's girlfriend. what can you tell us about the

efforts to find her? >> reporter: well i heard early on that there was a girlfriend who may be involved in this situation. they never did release her name, but they did release her picture. and it kind of led to the question, was this something that was planned? because even police said he had the girlfriend and family in the area, so is this a situation where someone was possibly outside the hospital waiting for him to come out or something like that. we've never been able to confirm whether there was any outside involvement with this escape, but that was something that police were definitely wanting to find out and were searching for the girlfriend. . we haven't been able to confirm if they caught up with her or not. >> in the last hour, we heard he had been able to change clothes. they probably know that from the second carjacking. do they think there could be somebody working with him in
