but they discovered the flames started in the house in the kitchen and spread to outdoors. everyone was out safely, but the house is severely damaged. also developing right now, a metro bus collided with a dump truck in silver spring this afternoon at new hampshire avenue and tracy drive. 17 people were on the bus at the time. ten of them were taken to the hospital, but all with just minor injuries. first up at 4, we're getting our first up-close look at some of the damage caused by the man who led police on that massive manhunt in our region yesterday. >> news4's darcy spencer is live in fairfax at police headquarters. >> reporter: pat, there's still a lot of questions that we are trying to get answered today regarding this brazen hospital escape that happened early yesterday morning. what was the suspect doing all that time while police were conducting this massive manhunt involving hundreds of officers? where did he go? what was he doing? let's go to the video we got today showing a house on oak court in the annandale area of

fairfax county. that's where the suspect is believed to have spent time after the escape from the hospital where police found the carjacked camry we were talking about yesterday. the homeowner tells news4 that the house had been broken into, a window was broken and the door to the house was broken. it appears that someone was inside there and had gone through every room in the house. she believed that the suspect ditched that hospital gown. we mentioned that he left the hospital wearing inging only a gown armed with the gun. she believed he left the gown there and possibly took clothing. the house was mostly vacant. just a few thing were left there. they had already moof moved out. she said it's possible he could have taken hueshoes. he may have eaten food, possibly consumed some alcohol that she had there in the home as well. she says that it looked like he was trying to change the tire on

that camry because it was there in the garage. she saw say jack and things like that, but she said apparently he left there and police say when he left that area he ran into the woods and stole yet another car. we're still working to get additional details fairfax county police could be releasing additional details today in the investigation and also coming up at 5:00, we'll have pictures that homeowner provided of the damage that was done to her home. back to you. >> thanks, darcy. a virginia state senator from loudoun county says he's been warned about a threat against his life from isis. richard black stezays police alerted him as he's been feature as the enemy in a magazine published by isis. he joins rick santorum and another republican. he praised bashar al assad that letter was posted on the syrian president's facebook page. i'm chris lawrence at the

live defkt chblgtsk. just a day day after the arkansas passed the religious objections bill, the governor is asking for changes. governor asa hitchison says he won't sign it as is. he's telling lawmakers they need to make it mirror a federal law that protects religious minorities from the government. >> this is both about substance, getting this legislation right, and also about communicating. we're a state that recognizes the diversity of the workforce. >> a maryland state senator is urging governor larry hogan to ban all state-traveled funding to indiana because of its new law. the governor says his own family could be designed service if someone objected to his wife's previous divorce. but he called the request a political stunt. muriel bowser instituted a similar travel ban and she's not

alone alone. coming up jay gray will dig into more of the laws. five protesters were removed from the u.s. supreme court today after disrupting the proceedings. it is the second time this year they've disrupted the court to shout criticism of previous rulings on campaign finance. a similar protest happened back in january. new details this afternoon in monday as shooting at the entrance to the national security agency in ft. meade, maryland. the driver who baz killwas killed ask a transgender sex worker in baltimore according to a friend. police say ricky hall was driving a stolen car and made a wrong turn into the nsa redistricted entrance, crashing into a cruiser. police opened fire. a passenger in the vehicle and a police officer were wounded. a worker at the transgender outreach program in baltimore said she saw hall sunday and she says he seemed high and seemed to be looking for a date. she says hall was friendly but very troubled. a final arrest this

afternoon in a bizarre shooting from late last month in dumfries dumfries. 22-year-old andre of perry of no fixed address is in custody. police tell us perry was in one of two vehicles involved in a car to car gunfight, damaging property along swans creek late here. five homes were hit, windows broken tires flattened. luckily, no one was injured. three other suspects are in custody. out this afternoon, the mug shot of the woman involved in yesterday's high-speed chase in fairfax county. police saleh keisha tracy tried to flee when they tried to pull her over near route 50 in fair view park. she led police on a high-speed chase on the beltway, i-95 and along the fairfax county parkway before she was finally stopped. tracy is accused of credit card fraud and identity theft. the duke university community is coming together within the hour to talk about a troubling on-campus incident that involves a noose.

a thin, yellow rope was found hagging from a tree overnight a photo posted on social media and republished by the school newspaper, the chronicle. duke officials say this evening the noose was an act of intimidation and anyone who took part will be held fully accountable. two weeks ago a black female student reported that white male students taunted her with a lynching song. an 8-year-old boy is responsible for an apartment fire that left almost 50 people displaced today. we've been sending you updates all day long on our nbc washington app. the blaze began nurse evening in an apartment complex off southern avenue in suitland chblgt 22. 22 apartments were evacuated. no one was hurt. tracyee wilkins is working to find out exactly how this handed. her live report is coming up at 5:00. turning to storm team 4, we are tracking changes that you're going to feel. >> here we go. let's go straight to

thieves are scouting out moms who are out on their daily errands and then striking at the first opportunity. this is a growing problem in our area. crooks smash car windows where they can see purtsses or diaper bags. they're looking for checks and using sneaky moves to get the checks cashed. we'll explain in the next hour why police call them the felony lane gang. it will be another two months before the case proceeds for a man who threatened to set off a bomb at the capitol and shoot people as they tried to escape. 21-year-old christopher lee cornell has pleaded not guilty to charges that included the attempted murder of government

and were not caught off guard by the mayor's comments last night. plans to build the bi-kpounty parkway in northern virginia on are on hold. it would connect prince william and loudoun counties, to create an easier, direct route through those communities. ddot tells us today it's not actively working on the project and today a group of virginia lawmakers says the project should be scrapped. one concern is the parkway would cut through parts of the historic manassas battlefield. >> this road is purely about development, and this area's been preserved. it's called the rural crescent for a reason. these neighbors want to keep it that way. >> stay with us the at 5:00, adam tuss looks at what could happen if the road is not built. tomorrow is world autism awareness day at the united nations with an emphasis on employment. among those in new york, leading the discussion is an executive

from freddie mac in virginia. the federal home loan mortgaging company has a hiring program geared toward people with autism. the program hemmed aaron cohen to become a data analyst. despite having a degree in math, he was unable to get a job until he connected with the program at fannie mae. >> other people there are things they may just let go someone with autism wouldn't. >> some bring unique analytical skills the ability to understand and dissect data. >> the autism program has been active at freddie mac for more than three years now. april is autism awareness month. the library of congress has an i.t. problem. that's the verdict in a new report out today on the largest library in the world, home to 158 million books, manuscripts and other materials as well as the u.s. copyright office. but government investigators say the library's i.t. department is

disorganized and lacks leadership, partly because the library's chief information officer does not have enough oversight or authority. the library has had five temporary cios in just the past three years. a police officer caught verbally abusing and screaming insults at an uber driver in new york. >> i don't know where you're coming from or where you think you're appropriate in doing that. that is not the way it works. how long have you been in this country? >> one of the passengers took the video and it has gone viral. police confirmed the man seen screaming is a member of the nypd and they say an independent agency is investigating the officer's tirade. our sister station in new york has learned the detective in this video is part of a joint terrorism task force and he had just left the hospital visiting a critically injured fellow officer when the incident was recorded. with headlines focusing on

lufthansa's stunning admission that it knew about the background of the germanwings' co-pilot, the ceo paid his respects today. here's bill neely. >> reporter: lufthansa is an airline under pressure. today its boss the ceo, came here in somber mood. he was dressed in a black suit and a black tie. he laid a wreath at the memorial to the victims closest to the site and then he made a statement to the press. he paid tribute to the searchers, told the families that the airline would be there to help them for as long as help was needed. >> we are very very sorry that such a terrible accident could have happened in lufthansa where we put so much focus on safety. >> reporter: it's not focus on how much focus it puts on safety that of course will be under intense scrutiny. he spoke for a few minutes and then basically turned on his heel and left. >> why are you refusing to take

turning spring the cherry blossoms are starting to swell a little. the buds are. >> absolutely. everybody in d.c. talking about cherry blossoms. so beautiful. we have video to show you now taken from the tidal basin today. those buds are getting bigger. now, peak bloom is forecasted for next weekend so the national washg service today saying that the florets just becoming visible today on april 1st. again, the forecasted peak bloom from april 11th to the 14th. last year's peak bloom very similar, from the 10th to the 14th. last year we were late on peak bloom, this year it looks like we're late as well. not this weekend but next weekend plan some time to take a trip down there and check them out. so gorgeous. here are your weather headlines as we start to think about the end of the week. mild temperatures, not 60s but 70s. some rain is in the forecast on friday. i'll show you the latest timing

clinton. everyone inside made it out safely. i'm chris lawrence at the live desk. new jersey senator bob menendez has been indicted on federal corruption charges. the indictment was just handed down this afternoon, and it contains 14 counts including bribery and conspiracy. menendez is accused of using his office to improperly benefit florida eye doctor solomon melgen. the senator admitted he flew on melgen's private jet multiple times though he said he paid him back for those trips. but menendez is also accused of interveneing in a dispute with the doctor. he received more medicare reimbursements in 2012 than any other doctor in the country. menendez says he didn't do anything wrong and he and melgen are just good friends. he's called a news conference for 7:00 p.m. we'll have more updates later. new developments in the effort to reach a deal to curb

iran's nuclear program today. talks in switzerland are set to drag into tomorrow. two days past the deadline set to reach a framework for the deal. as the midnight deadline passed last night secretary of state john kerry briefed president obama and national security advisers. there were more talks today. tonight the state department says kerry will stay another day because progress is being made. walmart just commended arkansas governor hutchison for reconsidering a religious freedom bill similar to the law being reworked in indiana. jay gray joins us live in indianapolis. >> reporter: pat, criticism still growing right now as lawmakers at the statehouse here and in arkansas as you talk about work to find some type of fix to help the anger and attention to the issue start to fade. after watching the meltdown in indiana --

>> it's been a tough week in the hoosiers state. >> reporter: -- in the wake of the state's new religious freedom restoration law. >> the issue has become divisive because our nation remains split. >> reporter: this afternoon, arkansas governor asa hutchison looking to keep his state out of the fray sent a similar measure back to the legislature days after saying he would sign the controversial bill. >> my position is clear. i've asked them to remedy it. i've asked them to change the current law. and i've asked them to recall it and change the language on it. >> reporter: the move comes after a sternly worded message from the ceo of the nation's largest retailer, arkansas-based walmart, calling for hutchison to veto the measure and as indiana state leaders -- >> this bill is completely flawed. >> reporter: -- now scramble to modify their new religious freedom act. >> i want to make it clear in the rfra law that the religious

freedom restoration act doesn't give businesses the right to not serve anyone. >> reporter: rewording the measure to -- citing religious beliefs. >> this is a completely self-inflicted wound. >> reporter: a wound that's still fresh after a convention and concert in the hoosiers state was canceled and as the final four prepares to tip off here. the national outrage over the issue may not end here. nevada lawmakers are set to move on a religious freedom bill there next week. live in indianapolis jay gray, news4. the irs commissioner says his agency's history of bad customer service may not be getting better anytime soon. commissioner john koskinen spoke yesterday at the national press club saying billions of dollars in budget cuts has meant major cuts in the number of extra hires during this busy tax season. now more than half of taxpayers who call the irs can't reach a

a new gallup poll found that nearly 1 in 5 americans admits to taking drugs to relax on a regular basis. the study found that west virginia is at the top of the list for drug use, almost 30% of people there report using every day. and it's mainly southern state that's are among the top spots. maryland tied for the tenth lowest drug usage, only about 17% of people say they use every day. virginia lies somewhere in the middle. springtime scams. they are much more common than you might think. >> consumer reporter erika gonzalez is here with a warning you need to know for the next time someone knocks on your door and offers to fix the driveway. >> that's right. we've been hearing amelia talk about this all afternoon.

weather is to beautiful it's only getting nicer. you might be thinking about home improvement projects. don't say yes to the first contractor that ridges your doorbell doorbell. frederick county put out a warning be cautious of contractors wanting to repair your driveway, your chimney, the roof, especially after that harsh winter we just had. all homeowners should take the proper precautions. you want to make sure that the business or person is reputable and licensed, and make sure that all of their credentials are up-to-date. next, washington consumers checkbook says shop around. there are big differences in quality of contractors. checkbook looked particularly at roofing companies and warns there can be even more striking differences when it comes to price. >> we've had prices ranging from about $5000 to about $20,000, even though they were quoting on exactly the same work. >> can you believe that? >> wow. >> same job.

i'm chris lawrence at the live desk. for the first time ever, california is imposing mandatory water restrictions statewide. governor jerry brown made the anuancement on the same date the state learned the snowpack levels in the sierra mountains are only at 6% of their average, the second low was 25% of average in 1977 and again last year. snow supplies about one-third of california's water. the water restrictions will force cities and towns to cut water useable by 25%. this will hit homeowners cemeteries golf courses even some of the farms will be affected by this. california now in its fourth year of drought. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence. crooks are targeting local moms and hoping to get away with lots of cash. northern virginia reporter david culver shares the details on this scheme. >> reporter: it's called the
