done with but there lingering drops. check it out on storm team 4 radar. a couple of patches of light rain. another patch and all the roads are still wet. already windy. winds are gusting much across the area with temperatures in the mid 50s. what to expect today, wetness and afternoon sunshine and a gusty wind. temperatures will hover in the upper 50 said to near 60 as you plan out your saturday. easter sunday is looking better than this. >> details on this. >> the intersection of gleeb road and old dominion road is closed following a three-car crash that killed 1 man in front of mary mountain university.

a pick up driver rear ended a car on gleeb that was pushed into the intersection hitting a third car. no students were involved. breaking news just in. the kenyan red cross said they found a survivor two days after a mill cant attack killed 148 people. kenyans say their government is not taking or doing enough to prevent militant attacks. it happened on thursday at a college in north eastern kenya by a group of militants. survivors say the killers were organized and clearly planned the attack. police said they arrested five suspects in connection with the attack that targeted christian students. >> activists and community leaders hold a rally to talk about operation safe zoo. it is meant to keep you and your family safe when we visit the zoo. we rally as a proactive measure.

big crowds are expected for a full day and you will notice security security officers and they will be checking your bags. there have been incidents in recent years that include violence and officials say they top the prevent that this year. >> we are learning more details about a case of child neglect. a spotsylvania couple get their child through a cage. >> take a look at the children living in filth. they sent these photos to show you. geri buchanan decided to share the story about the deplorable conditions. she saw the concern living this this room. spotsylvania deputies said the kids were in here 24 hours a day and fed through a homemade gate. >> it's horrible.

it broke my heart to see them in dirty diapers all the time. i would have to ask them are you going to change their diapers? they said they can't afford diapers. >> the 36-year-old couple pleaded guilt tow three counts of felony child neglect. they arrested the couple back in december. >> there was once when i would estimate approximately three months that i was here pretty much constantly and i didn't hear them get a bath. >> they said they had plywood that would prevent the kids from getting on the other side. you walk over here and this is a television. this was basically the baby-sitter. it was on all the time. over here was the gate. the kissed were get like this. deputies found the 17-month-old

when the shooting happened. >> you are more likely to be arrested for alcohol violations than by the state's alcohol beverage control data. according to updates, local police made 131 arrests compared to seven arrests by abc agents. alcohol enforcement came into the spotlight after the bloody arrest of a student. johnson needed ten stitches to the head after being arrested by abc agents. >> a memorial is growing at the site where a plane crashed into the alps. dna was collected from all on board. a second black box reveals the copilot increased the plane's speed as he flew the aircraft into the mountain. a philadelphia woman is trying to join isis.

good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. you look at this video, it looks like someone took a chunk out of the road. at least two people are dead in kentucky after heavy rain and thunderstorms lash the region. a search is under way for a mother and child who were swept introa flooded creek. we are learning thatter rescues in that state. much of the midwest kept a close eye on the radar from illinois to arkansas and high winds and lightning caused major damage. this shows the bust banks of a river. it was so strong it swept a semi oust road. two paramedics were affected.

a tornado touched down on southeast kansas. they were pummelled with hail. they left a trail of destruction in parts of missouri. >> much needed out west. california is running dry. the drought in the state now going into the fourth year. jerry brown called for mandatory cut backs earlier. the snowpack in the sierra nevada is at 5% of normal. that's the lowest since record keeping began in 1950. with the wet season over and no major rainfall in the forecast parch conditions are set to continue. >> blue bell ice cream was connected to three deaths. blue bell said they suspended operations voluntarily and out of caution. ten products were recalled.

this morning. the weekend planner, cloudy for now and winds are already out of the northwest, averaging 21. gusting over 30 miles an hour. on the way outside, you may need a wind breaker. temperatures upper 40s to near 50. east of the mountains and mid- to upper 50s. 60 in fredericksburg. there won't be much of a warm up. we are starting out in the 50s and stay most low in the 50s and 60s hovering through much of the morning. increasing amounts of sunshine. the breeze will make the warm up trickier than a normal sunny day. the overall impact on the day will be fairly low to moderate unless you are planning on wearing a big floby hat. it will be very windy. hold on to your hats and hairpieces. cooler air spinning in. the wind will snake feel windier, but the strong april

sunshine. the last of the drops over the lower parts. there a few more showers in western maryland falling apart as you move east. light rain right along i-81 for the next hour or two. the rain chance are done with us for the day. sunshine will clear out the skies later on. temperatures in the 50s and low 60s today. really chilly tonight. if you get the car washed you can do that. when the rain is gone you can get the car washed. future weather with a chilly start. if you are going to sunrise services plan on it being on the cold side. 30s to near 40. not as much of a wind but with the return of sunshine breezy at times by later. tomorrow's highs courtesy of the sunshine back into the mid 60s. the seven-day forecast with a rain chance left here but on the whole an improving picture.

chuck bell is here to tell us what you need to pack with you. chuck? >> good morning, erica and david. good saturday morning. saturday is here and passover started last night. a lot of folks planning out their big weekend activities. we have seen rain and it was raping on me on my drive into work. light rain moving into parts of far western maryland. a few wet flow flakes as well. a couple of light sprinkles and showers. most of the rain is done with us but the winds are gusting between 30 and 40 through much of the area. you need a wind breaker with a chinstrap to tie it o. not a big rise in temperatures. low 60s and mid 60s tomorrow. for cherry blossom weekend, the

weekend is looking great. >> three unsolved homicides raising safety questions in fairfax county. we went to figure out what's going on. this wooded path in herndon, this creek in annandale and nearby this apartment complex. three of the four places detective his to respond to in just three weeks. all for homicides. >> we don't have any reason to believe they were stranger attacks. we don't think there is anything that the public needs to be concerned about. >> bud walker said this time last year there were five homicides, a total of ten for the calendar. >> last year we had a 70% closure rate and last year we had a 100% closure rate. >> three of the four are still unsolved beginning here

mid-march. william's body was found here, trauma to the upper body. no arrest made but they are looking into the possibility of it being gang-related. they found a 19-year-old's body in a creek. police responded to a home in the huntington area. they discovered 64-year-old santos shot several times. thursday the murder in annandale. all the victims hispanic. spanish television following the homicides closely. >> there is nothing that the hispanic community needs to be concerned about as a community. >> the chief agrees. >> the community should feel safe although no homicides can be tolerated. >> head over to my twitter handle to read more on the crime stats. new this morning we just got this video of a brawl at a new york casino. 300 people were involved in this

fight. it broke out in the food court area of resort world casino in queens. people were throwing chairs and flipping tables. these men were arrested. no one was seriously hurt but the brawl caused several thousand as you can damage worth of damages to the casino. metro workers and supporters expected to rally at the metro access call center in hyattsville, maryland. they plan to call attention po to poor service and low wages and working conditions. they call it a rally for respect that begins at 11:30 at the 47th anniversary on the death of martin luther king jr. he was killed in memphis a day before a sanitation worker strike. >> the widow of james brady has died. sarah brady on the left passed away after battling pneumonia. she became a gun control

6:39 and thanks for joining us. how do you feel about a gun store in the district. there has not been one for decades, but the city's relaxed laws have not been a problem and she wouldn't object if a well regulated gun store were to open here. she was surprised at the number of people who applied for gun permits. >> it's not the surge of people coming in that we will see the thousands of concealed carry permits. it's not happening. >> the district banned hand guns in the 1970s until the supreme court ruled it unconstitutional.

the city could license, but couldn't ban concealed carry weapons. >> a group of parents is fighting back against redistricting and filed a complaint in court asking a judge to stay the plan in order for the school board to vote again. they voted to relieve overcrowding in the middle schools. they are asking for a report detailing why the students need to be moved. >> police are looking for the owners of a small dog wandering the neighborhood. this is a picture of the dog and how it looked when animal control officers picked him up. he was spotted in fairfax tuesday around rolling road and delong drive. they took him to the vet for a shave and he looks burden now. got a few medical treatments and he looks completely different. he is about three years old. if you have seen him and know

>> kyle said his family's trip to the national zoo was terrific but the metro ride back to the hotel was hair-raising. he was on a red line train on a break from pennsylvania when at about 5:20 p.m. there was an announcement that the train was going out of service and everyone should get off. the oldest child, 11 managed to get off with the rest of the passengers but he said he and his wife with the three younger kids including in a stroller were not able to do that before the doors closed. >> i thought i was in a good position and i was on the wrong side. >> another rider who had been unable to get off the train pressed the red emergency button. >> they were not helpful at all. they said the doors were not going to open and they had to proceed. >> they said because it was rush

recipients to mixed breeze dogs. most of the e-mails were set by a former city clerk that was fired and the officers resigned. >> seven police officers in san francisco are being accused of sending racist and homophobic messages. they have been suspended and the police chief wants them fired. they said there six more officers facing action. they targeted blacks mexicans filipino and gay men. they were sent between 2011 and 2012. chelsea manning joined twitter from prison. he is in prison for exposing national security secrets. a communications firm is handling the account. the firm tweets out messages chelsea dictates by phone. manning is serving 35 years in the military prison in kansas. >> christian churches will mark

sunshine trying to get through. mostly cloudy and mostly sunny by later on this afternoon. this will be a rapidly improving picture. we will call it mostly cloudy and 55 at reagan national airport. winds gusting to 24 miles per hour. wind gusts across the rest of the region are higher than that. it is chillier as well. we made it into the 70s and temperatures are 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. that will translate to later on this afternoon. highs today in the low 60s instead of low 70s. it's 48 in haegerstown. 52 in leesburg. in edge water, maryland. 57 in california. the outdoor planner is not much of a change in temperatures. we will rise up into the low 60s for a brief time as we head towards the afternoon. what you need to wear as you go out the door first thing this morning if you are going out. later on a wind breaker and

sunglasses as it should be a nice afternoon. mostly sunny later on. temperatures hovering in the 50s between now and lunchtime and inching our way up with strong april sunshine and up in about the 62 to 63 degree range. sun is down to 7:30. temperatures in the 50s through about 8:00 or 9:00 and back down to the chilly 40s by 11:00. start off with temperatures in the 30s to near 40. there is the cold front racing down to parts of southern maryland. showers across the lower parts are moving away. out here in southern pennsylvania towards frostburg and allegheny counties a few light rain drops. those should be moving along. the seven-day forecast is improving and becoming sunny and 62 and very windy.

still breeze we highs in the mid 60s near 70 monday and tuesday. rain chances are back tuesday afternoon and stay with us all through the second half of next week. enjoy the dry weekend. storm team 4 weather special coming up this morning at 9:30. my colleague has the story about the impact that the long lasting ice had on the waterways. >> not the worst i have ever seen but the worst this late in the season. >> the department of natural resources for 12 years as the captain from maryland's ice breaking fleet. his main job is to break up ice formed on the water. this year he said the ice is delaying the normal progression of the season. >> by now, it's it'sthe buoys. >> the ice is 7 to eight inches thick and where it piled up it can be two to three feet thick.

>> sometimes it can take a half hour to go like a few hadn't feet. >> there hadn'ts of boats that work on the bay in the winter time. >> residents also depend on ice breaking to get off of the island. >> the tugboats got stuck in this ice this year. for example, most winters the vessel could break ahead of the ferries. the ice was so bad in closing that we ended up acting as the ferry. we were taking too much of a chance for the ferries to tear themselves up. >> the bay is an estuary where fresh and salt water mix.
