a woman is recovering tonight thanks to a firefighter who is being hailed a hero. he helped save the life of a disabled woman after she was rescued from a burning home.

news 4's darcy spencer is live from northeast d.c. what is he saying? >> reporter: well chris, that firefighter paramedic works right here at this fire station on rhode island avenue here in northeast washington. he says he kept thinking about this victim wondering how she was doing so today he visited her in the hospital. this photo shows the dramatic moment when d.c. firefighters worked to save the life of a disabled work who was trapped in a burning home in northeast. >> she was pretty critical. she had a lot of smoke inhalation. she was not looking good. >> reporter: that's firefighter paramedic zak on the ground intubating the 20-year-old woman. she was pulled from the home at 19th street unable to walk on her own. firefighter locket carried her out of the house. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. one week after the call he

visited the young woman in the hospital. she is doing much better breathing on her own. >> very emotional. she was crying and happy to see me all the at the same time. you know? i had to hold everything back not to shed a tear. >> reporter: so a very emotional reunion. it is hoped here that she will make a full recovery. chris, back to you. i'm jason pugh here at the live desk. the major league all-star game is coming to d.c. in 2018. sources confirm that the league will award the game on monday. major league commissioner scheduled to be part of the opening day festives and this announcement to be part of the festivities. news 4 sports.

pointed a rifles at the officers and one of the officers shot him once in the chest. he is still facing assault charges. the president of kenya says his country is in a state of mourning after extremeists killed 148 people. now, most of these victims were christian students. and the terrorists are threatening to carry out even more attacks. even with all of that there was a remarkable story of survival today. here's nbc's bill nealy. >> reporter: from the car imagine and tragedy, a story of survival. after 48 hours, a 19-year-old student from garissa university cynthia, emerged after hiding in a large cupbore. she hid in the cupboard for two days. even when rescuers were calling out her name she didn't want to come out because she simply

didn't trust that they weren't gunmen. it was only when she heard the voice of her teacher calling her name she decided to emerge. she is a kris yn an spent 48 hours simply praying to god that she would be alive and stay alive. >> were you scared? >> hmm? >> were you scared? >> i was scared so much. >> reporter: one remarkable story but most of the stories here are not stories of survival. i've spent most of the day at the mortuary where the relatives are identifying their loved ones through photographs of the dead. 119 bodies are at the mortuary. taken photographs. warning people to be strong coming in to try to identify their loved ones chbl obviously, as they come out, having done that they're, well in pieces. they're crying. many are hysterical. so terrible skeenls there. but at least today one story of survival. a remarkable story of a

19-year-old hiding for two days to spare her life to save her own life. back to you. those are demonstrators in downtown indianapolis protesting the state's religious freedom law. indiana revised the law to prevent businesses from discriminating against gay and lesbian customers but they want more protections added to the state's civil rights law. a mother and father admitted they kept their kids locked up in a cage day and night and tonight we're learning why they won't spend a single day in jail. now, this story has a lot of you outraged on the incomes washington facebook page. the couple confessed to locking the children in a cage. they have two dours, 3 and 4 years old. their son 17 months but the commonwealth's attorney recommended leniency. william admits conditions were awful but he's defending the

recommendation of a suspended sentence. >> you have to show that the parents or the caretaker intended their neglect to cause harm and that it in fact, did. in this case, although the children were in nasty, filthy conditions and had skin rashes they were healthy. >> all three children have been placed in foster care and the parents are on probation. they each have to pay $2,500 fine and cannot have any unsupervised contact with the kids. a new whole foods store is headed to the howard university area. developers lined it up to anchor a building. no word on construction starting but it's around florida and sherman avenue not far from the university. it's been a college park staple for decades and as a former terp i spent many many nights at this place but sadly ratsy's serving up the last

new at 11:00, check this out. a woman tried to stop a carjacking by jumping on to the windshield. in surveillance cameras captured it all. when they tried to take off, the woman leaps on top of it. a good samaritan was spotting running towards the confrontation. he fired a shot and police captured the suspects just a few blocks away. one photo was enough to spark a firestorm at the university of south carolina. it shows a white student on campus allegedly writing a racial slur about blacks in the study room. she's been suspended and the university president has released a statement calling the incident unfortunate and disappointing. the photo just surprised friday and appears to show a woman listing why wi-fi doesn't work on campus. number one reason the n-word. at the university of maryland it was an offensive

e-mail that started a controversy. a fraternity member sent it last year. students describe it as racist and sexist. but maryland's president says it didn't violate any school policy and the sender is protected by the first amendment. that student apologized this week and says he's sorry for all the pain that he's caused. a mother and daughter trapped after an rv bursts into flames. see the dramatic rescue that got them out just in time. and the temperatures fall into the 30s tonight. amelia h

new tonight, a mother and her daughter got trapped in a burning rv and this could have easily turned into a tragedy except for good samaritans who happened to be driving by. the camper caught fire friday on a highway outside orlando. the woman and her daughter couldn't get out because the flames were blocking the door and at the same time working their way toward a 100-pound propane tank. three men jumped into action and pulled them out through a window. metro axis bus drivers demanding better working conditions and wages and they tell us they barely make a living wage. about 100 drivers and other employees protested today outside the metro axis call center and said the pay is undercut by independent contractors who get some of the operations and dispatching jobs. the transit authority hires those contractors and union
