churches across our region celebrating easter. >> news 4's derrick ward is live outside saint matthew's cathedral. >> reporter: good morning. you can see behind me, take a look at the scene ten or 15 minutes ago where there was a veritable sea of people going in and out. we did also go to the service -- the sun viz service at the lincoln memorial, another very popular event in town. that's been going on since 1979. that crowd has grown to the size of about 6,000 people after starting out maybe just a handful. part of the services going on all across the region. folks that we talked to are going to the services feel the special need to somehow be contemplative about this. we have a lot of tragedy, a lot of things like that. we spoke to monsignor jamison

about that. here is what he had to say. >> the tragedies that have happened, and so many of them, day after day, we read about them in the paper. we can also say jesus has given us hope. with his resurrection we have new life which means we can't just sit back. it's not just a matter of coming here for easter sunday morning. it also means when we leave we have to work towards that new life. >> reporter: indeed that's what he did tell us. that's the interesting part of this. this is just the beginning and should go on beyond days like easter sunday. derrick ward, news 4. back to you. the national cathedral in northwest d.c. will offer service at 11:00 this morn. all advanced passes have already been given out. breaking news this morning. one person is dead and two others are injured following an explosion in cairo. you can see the damage to this car. it was on a bridge when the explosion happened.

witnesses say the blast hit the bridge near an upscale cairo neighborhood. a police officer was killed. attacks mainly targeting egyptian security forces have spiked since 2013. we are working to get more information on this. today a journalistic review will reveal new information into an editorial process into the "rolling stone" article about the university of virginia. columbia's graduate school of journalism is conducting the review. the november piece detailed a brutal gang rope at the fraternity house in 2012. students protested following the article and president theresa sullivan suspended all activities at greek associations. "the rolling stone" later apologized for discrepancies in the report. a man is in critical condition after a police involved shooting in anne arundel county. a relative called police to do a check on the man's welfare but

he reportedly pointed a rifle at them. an officer shot him once in the chest. he was taken to shock trauma in baltimore. neighbors are left wondering why police shot so quickly. >> kind of shocking that the officer shot so fast and acted so quickly. >> police say they have been called to the house in the past relating to incidents with the man. this morning we're learning why a virginia couple who confessed to locking their children in a cage will serve no jail time. the couple has two daughters ages 3 and 4 years old, their son is just 17 months old. the commonwealth's attorney recommended leniency. william neely admits conditions in the home were awful, but he is defending his recommendation of a suspended sentence. >> -- the parents or the caretaker intended their neglect to cause harm and that, in fact, it did. in this case although the children were in nasty, filthy

conditions and had skin rashes, they were healthy. >> all three children have been placed in foster care and the parents are on probation. they each have to pay $2500 in a fine and they cannot have any unsupervised contact with the kids. this story continues to develop this morning. a man thought to be one of the gunmen in the attack on a kenyon college is the son of a government officer. his father says he report lisson missing one year ago. he had feared he had gone to somalia. kenya's president says he will take harsh measures against islamic militant groups as family members continue to sfri to trace relative whose are presumed dead. the somalia-based group al shabaab says there will be more attacks. the country's president says those responsible for killing 148 people will be punished. the attack happened on thursday at a university in kenya. five people have been arrested in connection with the attack. you've been commenting on

a towing company is on the defense after a driver hooked a car with two children inside it. >> our northern virginia bureau chief julie carey talked with the family. >> reporter: he parked his car in the exact spot he was in last friday afternoon. he says he was in cvs for 15 minutes getting medicine for his

sick son. in the car 17-year-old tracy kept her little brother occupied until they felt a volt. >> we felt like somebody crashed the car. >> the car started to lift up and i was scared. and then i looked out the back and i saw the tow driver and then i opened the door late little bit and said wait, wait, wait. >> reporter: max's shouts stopped him cold. >> when i started crying he came to the door and said i'm sorry for freaking you out. >> reporter: the advanced touing truck was driving off as dad walked out of cvs and found his son crying in the car. >> i got right on the phone to the tow company. i would like for them to be held accountable for the predatory practices they're implementing. >> reporter: he say it is oern promised to follow up but hasn't heard back. it's the second complaint we've reported on in resented months. in december this woman's car was

towed to the impound lot with her dog still inside. they claim the car was illegally parked and adds the vehicle had intoed windows. however, before removing the vehicle from its parking space, occupants were noticed and the vehicle was never moved from its space. arlington county officials say about 20,000 vehicles are towed each year from private parking lots. police receive about 50 to 75 complaints each year and investigate each. about ten are found to be cases of improper towing. julie carey "news 4 today." 10:14 on this easter sunday. the sun is starting to warm things up a bit. chuck says enjoy it because later this week, not so much. what we'll see instead coming up.

this week we saw a historic deal on iran's nuclear program. >> moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd joins us now to talk more about that. good morning. happy easter. >> happy easter hatch pi passover to folks as well. >> it's hard to keep the nuclear framework deal in perspective when you have so many people, political jockeying going on with the white house members of congress and those overseas israel of course making its voice heard on this. >> it is. i'll be speaking with israeli prime minister about the deal.

he's obviously against the deal. the question is does he want congress to kill it? he's not ready to say that, per se. he would like to see it renegotiated. his biggest beef is this won't change iran's behavior in other parts of foreign policy. i think it's going to make it that much harder for the president to sell this deal to democrats in congress. that's the constituency here. he knows he's going to have republican opposition. if democrats join in with it or a good chunk of them, it will be harder for him to implement the deal itself. >> obviously the israeli prime minister has his own thing going on. there's just been so much anti-american sentiment from iran. that's why this is such a big boiling point. >> that's the thing. how do you realistically -- you do this deal with them on nukes. at the same time you'll be opposing them and trying to prevent them from expanding their sphere of influence in a place like yemen, militarily

tomorrow you can head to the national zoo for easter monday, a washington family tro dags. this year barriers are up to control crowds and you have to walk through a bag check to get inside the zoo. the new security measures are in response to past violence on easter monday. the nationals play their home opener against the new york mets. you have to walk through metal detector detectors. the first pitch is at 4:05 p.m. we'll have live coverage of opening day beginning on "news 4 today" at 4:26 tomorrow morning. and tomorrow we will hear the university of virginia's response to review of an article alleging a culture of rope on its campus. right now a journalistic review is being conducted about a now discredited "rolling stone" article that detailed a rope on campus. metro wants to extend parking fees by two hours at all
