flames rip through a home trapping a couple inside. >> and we are just now learning about the delgadoly fire's devastating impact on the community. news4's mark segraves is live in columbia heights. mark? >> reporter: this is one of those neighborhoods, one of those blocks where everyone knows everyone else particularly the elderly cup who will had lived in this home for generations. >> just seeing the next-door neighbor s running out the house from the fire. >> reporter: the fire sent flames and smoke shooting through the roof that could be seen from blocks away. >> flames were coming out about 20 feet. >> reporter: despite attempts neighbors could not get into the house where the elderly couple was trapped. >> trying to break in the door. >> reporter: they even threw rocks at the windows trying to wake them up. >> the first officer on the scene pulled up he said over

>> coming up in our next hour the story of the rush to rescue those hurt in the crash. the supreme court will not hear an appeal from alan gross, the maryland man who spent five years in a cuban prison. he says the federal government failed to properly prepare him for the risks he faced in cuba. gross was working as a subcontractor for usaid when he was arrested back in 2009. an appeals court ruled last year that the government is immune from claims arise in a foreign country and tossed out gross' $60 million lawsuit. he was freed in december. just minutes ago, jurors were given their instructions at the boston marathon bombing trial. in closing arguments today, the prosecutor said dzhokhar tsarnaev didn't think of the children who would be killed or wounded in the attack as innocent victims but as americans who need to be punished for what the government is doing in muslim countries. tsarnaev's defense pointed to evidence linking dzhokhar's

brother, tamerlan to the crimes and said there's no denying that dzhokhar participated but without tamerlan it wouldn't have happened. in just a few minutes we'll go live to boston the find out when the jury might get the case. easter. there's a bigger police presence at the national zoo right now for easter monday. it's a century-old tradition for local families but fighting among teenagers has marred the family-oriented event in recent years. for the first time bags are being checked at a security checkpoint near the entrance and community leaders and volunteers are manning stations outside and inside the zoo. gunfire rang out just outside the gates last year injuring two people. we'll hear from visitors about the stepped-up security coming up in our next hour. first at 4, it's official folks. there's a live look at nats park where the 2018 all-star game will be played. the league made the announcement this afternoon and the timing could not come at a better time. there's already a buzz about the

stuptds at the university of maryland are on alert after an attack in off-campus housing in student apartments on baltimore avenue as a student was trying to pass a group of people. someone grabbed him and demanded money. he was able to fend off the attack and was not seriously hurt. now to a developing story involving an explosion on the new york city subway tracks. vandals are now believed to be

responsible for the blast last week. blinding light stopped a train in its tracks on thursday in brooklyn. passengers screamed. no one was seriously injured. police now believe a metal object on that track caused the flash and the flames that followed. they are working to find the person or people who put it there. police in fairfax county working today to find out if two drugstore robberies yesterday are connected. two cvss were robbed one in centreville, the other in lorton. in both cases the suspect pulled out a gun and demanded various drugs. and in both cases the suspect is described as wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt. he may have been driving a silver pickup truck. backed up and causing big problems. first at 4, the team that wasn't quite ready for beginning of baseball season. the desperate measures some fans say they had to take. it's almost that time. packing up the car and hitting the road. and now we know whether the prices at the pump will help you

this is not a good thing. this is not safe. i drive every day for a living. this is nerve-racking for me to be driving now. >> reporter: she's not alone. in kansas city our nbc affiliate found other altima drivers with similar complaints. several nissan owners sald they had no idea the problem was dividewide spread and figured they were unlucky. including jeff with a 2002. >> you can feel it's soft right here. this is like about a seven inch long area where it's actually rotted up here. >> reporter: and herb brown's 2002 altima. >> who would want to pie a car with holes in the floorboards? >> reporter: the national highway traffic safety administration has received more than 400 complaints of rusted out altimas 2002 to 2006 models. while many come from states with heavy snow and salt, not all do. nissan says it's aware of a number of complaints but won't order a recall because it has no evidence of a defect and the cars affectd are 10 to 14 years old. but the mechanics we've talked to say something's wrong. have you seen this in a nissan

before? >> yes, i've seen it quite a few times. >> reporter: really. >> i have a couple other customers with the same car and same issues. >> reporter: nissan also tells nbc news this issue is not considered a safety defect by nissan or the government agency that administers safety recalls, nhtsa. nissan declined the request to repair the realtor's car but to her the hole beneath her feet is a serious safety issue. >> i have to have my car that works and i don't feel threatened by driving it. >> nissan says rust in 10- to 14-year-old cars is not unusual but the mechanics nbc news talked to say they have never seen metal corrode like this on any other car. the government says it's only aware of one possible injury from a rulsed-out nissan. israel and hard-liners in iran agree on one thing -- they're opposed to the framework of the nuclear deal with tehran. today a senior israeli government minister said military action against iran's nuclear program is still an option. in the meantime iran's foreign

minister noted that the deal is not binding and specific details will be worked out over the next three months. his remarks appear to be an attempt to reassure hard-liners who oppose the deal. well here's some welcome news this afternoon. just as a lot of you start to think about where to get away this summer. those summer gas prices could be somewhere around what you're paying now or even lower. aaa tells us prices might actually drop over the next few months but it all depends on global issues as well as whether refineries here at home can keep the fuel coming. right now stations in washington are averaging about $2.54 a gallon in maryland $2.36, and across virginia an average of $2.19. in west virginia it's $2.41. a lot of folks are making their way here to get a taste of springtime in washington so chuck, are the cherry blossoms ready for them? >> they're so close. they are so close. i was down there today running and i'm here to tell you those cherry blossoms at the basin are

thinking about it and i think it's probably no more than another five or six days before they spring forth. take a check outside. what a wonderful day it was to be down around the basin. check out that tree. those florets are getting longer all the time. and those are usually indications that we're within five or seven days of peak bloom. it's expected later this year than in many years in the recent past but that's all right. once they come out, they're going to be in their full glory and won't be long now, everybody. the dark pink color around the basin will be turning bright shades of white. joush traffic down the river over national airport. hazy sunshine out there. what a beautiful day it is. don't get too used to it. mild again tomorrow but rain chances are back tomorrow into wednesday, on into thursday and even into friday. so this is the last guaranteed dry day of the week. a big push of air bringing moisture our way. that will be the rain that we'll

easter monday celebrations. last year fights broke out in a shooting in which two were injure. it was avoidable, the bottom line in the investigation into what went wrong in the "rolling stone" article on that alleged gang-rape at the university of virginia. >> "rolling stone" has retracted the report but this is far from the end of this unfortunate episode. edward lawrence is live on capitol hill with new fallout for the magazine. edward? >> reporter: pat and jim, today the president of the fraternity mentioned in that "rolling stone" article says that they have been defamed and they plan to pursue legal action. the headlines rocked the feeling of security for women at universities across the country. "rolling stone" published an article describing a 2012 gang-rape of a student named jackie at a university of virginia fraternity. after serious doubts about the story emerged "rolling stone" asked columbia university's school of journalism to find out what went wrong. it found the story of

journalistic failure that was avoidable. >> it was the collective fault of the reporter the eld or the, the editor's supervisor and the fact-checking department. >> reporter: they found the reporter sabrina ruben had a bias for jackie's story and a lack of transparency in verifying it. police never substantiated there was a rape discredited "rolling stone" retracted the story, and the final report says the magazine's failure may have spread the idea that many women invent rape allegations, a fear shared by the head of washington, d.c. rape crisis center. >> my message is that you aren't alone and that we believe you and that we still encourage you to come forward and seek support and resources. >> reporter: now the fraternity phi kappa psi plans to sue "rolling stone" as students try to repair the scars left at the university of virginia campus. there are hundreds and hundreds of students administrator, and faculty who care about this issue on grounds and want this institution to be a national leader on preventing further

"the times" story had a link to the form with personal information redacted. bush tweeted, my mistake. don't think i've fooled anyone. the former florida governor is fluent in spanish and his wife was born in mexico. new intel on hillary rodham clinton's campaign. she's expected to launch her presidential bid within the next two weeks. but don't look for any big

arena-style rallies to kick it off. she's going to focus on intimate events at first according to the associated press. two clinton insiders say she'll chemothe focus on voters and will show that she plans to earn their support. five years in jail this afternoon for a former councilman in rif dale park maryland. that's the sentence handed down today for raymond revis found guilty of using a baseball bat to assault a homeless man last june on a property he managed. revis also used a gun to threaten the man. there's no possibility of parole for him. revis resigned his council seat following his conviction. the defense at the aaron hernandez murder trial has rested after calling just three witnesses. one testified about the effects of pcp which hernandez co-defendants were seen smoking two days before the death of odin lloyd. and just before he rested his case, a defense attorney read a statement to the jury that loild's autopsy showed he had marijuana in his system.

verdict. jay? >> reporter: absolutely jim, pat, good to talk to you. we know they're done for the day, closing arguments are done no deliberation today. that will gebegin in the morning. prosecutors said that dzhokhar tsarnaev quote, wanted to harm america while his defense team said that if not for his broth they are bombing may have never happened. the closing message from prosecutors was powerful and direct telling jurors "the defendant brought terrorism to back yards and main street" and calling the marathon bombing a coordinated attack to maximize the terror. the government included graphic video of the blast near the marathon finish line and disturbing pictures of the victims. u.s. attorneys detailed dzhokhar tsarnaev's actions captured in photographs and on surveillance video from the scene including images they say show him placing the bomb just behind a group of children targets, prosecutors said chosen to "awake the mujahideen and the holy

warriors. these children weren't innocent to him. they were american." the defense began closing arguments much like the trial, saying "dzhokhar tsarnaev stands ready by your verdict to be held accountable for his actions," telling jurors they agreed with the government on the who, what when and where of the bombing but that we very much disagreed about the why. they contend it was tsarnaev's older brother, tamerlan who was the master mind and the money behind the attack telling the jury "we don't deny that dzhokhar fully participated in the events, but without tamerlan it wouldn't have happened." as deliberations begin in the morning, the verdict expected to come very quickly. in fact within the next couple of days here. that's the latest live in boston. jay gray news4. a dream caribbean vacation turned into a nightmare for a delaware family. they ended up in the hospital with pesticide poisoning. the couple and their two teenaged sons were staying at a luxury result in the u.s. virgin islands soon after arriving last month they got violently ill.

paramedics rushed them to the hospital. resort owners say terminix exterminators sprayed for bugs the day before their arrival. an investigation by the epa later determined they allegedly used a highly toxic pesticide that's banned for indoor use. the justice department has started a criminal investigation. >> no one in this day and age should be applying methyl bromide indoors. >> the parents are now out of the hospital. their sons are still in critical condition. a terminix spokesperson says the company is cooperating and it's conducting its own internal investigation. i don't know if you could find anything to complain about today, maybe a little bit too much of a breeze but it's a south wind and that is a warming wind for sure around here. we've made 76 degrees now at reagan national airport. far and away one of the mildest days we've seen so far this

pizza shop. we'll tell you what one of the employees there is accused of doing and what he was allegedly hiding in his locker. i'm scott mcfarlane at the live desk. the national transportation safety board is look spoog possible similarities between two recent spoke incidents on metro rail. the ntsb has asked for the components that led to smoke on the orange line near the courthouse station in february. that incident happened about a month after the deadly smoke incident at l'enphant plaza in january. the board said it will look into any similarities between those two incidents. at the live desk scott mcfarlane. a stunning turn of events for a local high school robotics team that had just advanced in the competition. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us from loudoun county with a preview. >> reporter: it was a big weekend for this loudoun county robotics team. they're called robo loco.

his crash happened yesterday afternoon in reno. turbulent weather ripped both wings off. the pilot parachuted to the ground just moments before the plane crashed into a parking garage. one wing landed in grass near a playground. >> this could have been a lot worse. looks like the glider didn't hit anybody or really anything maybe a car or two in the parking lot here. >> the pilot suffered only minor injuries. that crash is now under investigation. some new parents have quite the story to tell about how their son came into the world. >> they were trying to make it to a hospital in connecticut, but the little one had other plans. matt austin has more on this roadside delivery. >> this is a first for us or for myself. and it was an unbelievable experience. >> reporter: on easter these firefighters became a delivery team on i 91 southbound after a 911 call. near exit 9 in north haven, melanie and daren yardley had pulled over having left their cheshire home and unable to make

it to the hospital. >> we got there, found the woman in the rear of the car in active labor and due to her condition we didn't feel it was appropriate to hang out on the scene. >> reporter: the couple was loaded into the rescue truck and they raced to yale-new haven hospital which was about 13 miles away. but that proved to be too far and just minutes from the hospital they had to pull over on 91 because time had run out. >> i was really really nervous. it's just, you know there's a lot of complications come with childbirth even though they've been doing it for thousands of years. mom and dad did excellent, were able to maintain their level of calmness which was surprising to me, and that helped bring the anxiety down. >> once the baby was out and he cried and he was breathing fine and give the baby to mom and, you know the hard part was over so i jumped back out of the back and drove the rest of the way down to yale. >> reporter: now at the hospital the family could properly welcome daren robert yardley jr. happy and healthy at 8.4 pounds and 21 inches.

up forecast minutes away. >> reporter: opening day, news4 gives you a front-row seat to the sights and sounds at nats park. an elderly woman is dead this evening and a man believed to be her husband is in critical condition after flames shoot through a house and the fire damages several other homes. news4's mark segraves spoke to a neighbor in columbia heights today who police tell us barely got out alive. mark? >> reporter: jim, you know, this is one of the very typical streets in washington, d.c. in one home a group home filled with young federal employee who is hadn't lived in d.c. for very long right next door an ellerly couple who had lived in this very home for generations. early this morning both houses went up in flames. >> about 6:15 we heard a smoke alarm coming from downstairs. my roommate heard it first. i thought it was someone's alarm clock. he said the neighbor's house is on fire. >> reporter: it was just after

6:00 this morning when sean harrison and his roommates looked out their window and saw the home next door going up in flames. >> the house was starting to fill with smoke and we knew we had to be out of there. the flames were out of the window jutting up 15, 20 feet in the air. and then so we got out. >> outside neighbors had been trying to get into the elderly couple's home throwing rocks at the windows hoping to wake them up. >> firefighters and neighbors were knocking on everyone's door trying to make sure everyone was up and out of their houses. >> we were trying to break in the house but were unsuccessful until the fire department came. >> the neighborhood kind of came together. it was nice to see. >> reporter: despite the efforts of neighbors and firefighters the elderly woman did not survive. the second victim an elderly man, is listed as critical condition. the red cross has been on the scene. they're helping to find
