prince george's county. it's sending black smoke into the air. >> live pictures from chopper this 4 from the capitol heights area. mark brady from the prince george's county fire department is on the phone with us to brings up to speed on what's going on. we can see the smoke from this 20 mile ace way in some cases. what can you tell us about that fire? >> we were receiving calls from people attending opening day at nats stadium from the large plume of smoke. what we have is large sea containers loaded with styrofoam that appears to be the seat of the fire. it spreads to warehouse areas, wooden pallet things of that nature. all that smoke and fire that you see is behind the warehouse. we've done a grat goode job at this point keeping the fire away from the warehouse. we seem to be getting a handle
6:01 pm
on the fire. very unfortunately, two pieces of fire apparatus were on the rear of the building. a shift occurred pushing the fire directly onto those piece of the fire apparatus. they have been lost. they're a total loss and burned. >> how about, mark anybody -- any injuries? >> to this point we have not noted any serious injuries. there are going to be some injuries in incidents like this but we have not had any serious injuries reported that the point. >> that's good to hear. >> how large of an operation have you had to mount here? we heard two-alarm fire so, maybe 100 or so firefighters on scene? >> yeah. we have sounded the third alarm bringing more than 100 firefighters to the scene, probably close to 50 pieces of
6:02 pm
apparatus. >> are you worrying about this fire spreading, mark and is the wind causing problems iffer you? >> the wind is certainly a challenge for us. it's spreading the fire to what's on the outside of this fence where the fiber is burning is woods. and this is over toward central avenue. you could not barely see ahead of you on central avenue. the wind is a challenge. ovechkin into the wooded area. >> we can see from the live picture wes ear showing on the news here from our helicopter we can see it looks terrible. it looks like the wind is an issue and we can see still a lot
6:03 pm
of active flames. >> exactly. a lot of guys on our -- loss of fire apparatus, probably close to $1.5 million worth of fire apparatus alone that has been lost in this fire. >> tell us about this area that you're in. it looks from the pictures we're seeing from chopper 4, this is an industrial area but your concerns about wind-carrying embers or anything else catching fire, are you worried about other buildings, homes? what are you having to deal with larger perspective? >> this is a heavily industrial area. it's a structure closest to the fire we worry about. there's woods, we have to battle the fires present in the wood at this point, the embers and things are not that big a
6:04 pm
concern at this point. maybe later but at this point we've got our hands full dealing with what we have here. >> mark since you drove over the scene pretty recently can you talk a little bit about what kind of traffic issues this fire is creating? >> you can see the large plume of smoke attracting everybody's attention. the black smoke lays low on the ground certainly becomes a factor right around central avenue. at richie road in that area. we have our hands full. >> mark brady, thank you for taking time to tell us what's going on and we hope you guys can get this under control pretty quickly. if you're just joining us you are watching breaking news

industrial fire roofing and insulation business where we understand some styrofoam containers have caught on fire. again, capitol heights, near central avenue in the bellway and prince george's county. we've been talking about the wind and how that's affs they try to get this fire under control. chuck bell, what can you tell us about the wind speed and how it may be affecting what they're trying to do in prince george's county? >> the wind is certainly not helping the firefighters' cause at all. winds are out of the south averaging 15 to 20 miles per hour but winds are gusting now to 20 to 25 miles per hour across much of the region. and any kind of a sustained wind or a gusty wind like that is just going to make the efforts all that much more difficult for the firefighters out there. the smoke plumes are racing northbound. anytime you add wind to a fire
6:08 pm

6:09 pm
