>> reporter: this could be a big step toward winning back public trust creating an end safety commission that can take charge of all of metro rail operations with the power of enforcement are considered critical to making sure necessary safety improvements get done. now, this afternoon's meeting comes just months after a deadly smoke incident near l'enfant plaza that led to a woman's death. for years critics have accused metro's managers and the current oversight system in place of just being too slow to act on safety. and they have been calling for this type of commission to be formed to get things done. fix metro's safety problems and its reputation. this all gets started this afternoon at the council of governments in charge of making this happen. we're live this morning the at l'enfant plaza station, i'm molette green. back to you. i'm angie goff at the live

desk where i just got this update from pepco on those outages in the prince george's county area. get this we're hearing that restoration time has just been pushed back another hour. so we're looking at 8:00 a.m. before those in the dark out in the a delldelphi area will have the lights back on. the numbers went from 1600 to just under 400 p. pepco tells us a vehicle accident is the rope for this. and when you lose power, you can always get our live updates and watch the show on our nbc washington app. it's 6:03. and bethesda metro station is open again 240r7kthis morning after more than five hours of repairs on the escalators. widespread power outage is to blame. it riders to find another way to get around here. metro did provide shuttle buses. and everything is up and running this morning. the power is back on for the yort of pepco customers who lost

computers. a russian diplomat the for the kremlin saying that blaming everything on russia is a new sport. that's after a new report out yesterday said russia was behind last year's cyber attack that followed u.s. imposed sanctions on russia. the white house saying no classified information was compromised with that hack. 6:16 now. new this morning, a husband and wife are in the hospital after being rescued from this burning building near downtown l.a.. the flames ungefledulfed the top floors. we're told the victims are expected to make a full recovery. the cause is still under investigation. fire officials say the building had no sprinklers but it's not clear whether they were required. a navy officer has been reassigned following a deadly shooting at a base in norfolk.

rear admiral rick william son removed the lieutenant from his security post. an investigation revealed a series of security lapses that allowed a man to drive on to the base without a reason to be there. the man shot and killed a sailor an bod the uss mihan. security officers shot and killed the gunman. in the day ahead man charged in the death of his wife is expected to be in a courtroom. prosecutors say castillo killed his wife michelle and tried to make it look like a suicide. they say the couple was in the middle of a bitter divorce. michelle had a protective order against her husband. the victim was found happening in the basement bathroom of their home in ashburn last march. castillo denies the set for july 14th. a loudoun county man accused of murdering three people in alex past decade will stand trial. a judge found charles severance competitive to take the stand. his attorneys now want a change

>> reporter: this is a big announcement today here in prince george's county. it will be interesting to see how it plays out for voters at the polls. county executive baker will give his endorsement to chris van hollen over donna edwards. this is to fill the vacant senate seat by barbara mikulski. a lot of eyes and ears on this. van hollen and baker go back more than 20 years to the time that they had in the maryland houts house of delegates in the early 1990s. baker says those experiences weigh heavily in this decision. he had edwards has gained a lot of report from national log sieves. if edwards or any other affairen can american wins this race, they will make history in the state of maryland. baker says his decision is rooted in the best candidate that he feels can provide leadership and get things done

we know the truth. but somebody was watching. >> the family of a black man killed by a police officer is now reacting to the news the officer is facing murder charges. he shot man this weekend and video of what happened led to his arrest. warning now that video is graphic. you may want to turn away especially if you're with your kids. it shows the officer shooting the man in the back as he runs away. at first the officer said the man took his taser and that he feared for his life. the video shows that did not happen. the officer appeared in court yesterday. he was denied bail by a judge. if convicted, he could face 30 years in prison. 14 before the hour the killing of michael brown in ferguson sparked a national conversation. ferguson held its first election since that shooting last night and elected two new black members to its city council. voter turnout more than doubled from last year.
