"news 4 today" continues at 5:00 a.m.. right now at 5:00 a.m. we have developing new. three different scenes spanning across maryland and the district connected to a shooting at the census bureau. a woman kidnapped security guard killed and police officer recovering after a shooting with the suspect. >> and we're waiting to learn the identity of the lone shooter. the chaos started when the suspect kidnapped his own wife near t street northeast. from there he shot a guard at the u.s. census bureau headquarters. later police spotted the gunman's car and there was shoot-out along the busy h

street corridor. we'll dig more into that in a moment. first, it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. tom kierein tracking some severe storms. >> this is the first round of our spring season of the potential for severe storms. right now we do have scattered storms in ohio down into kentucky and tennessee. this did produce severe weather yesterday afternoon a tornado there in illinois. the area of storms that will be affecting us is in kentucky. and it is still about 9 1/2 hours away of getting into our region. so that will be maybe around 3:00 or so and a little bit after that farther to our east. right now around the metro area, just a little bit of scattered drizzle around. don't have anymore rain and temperatures are chilly. right now we're hovering just in the mid-40s around the metro area but warmer air beginning to push into the shenandoah valley. southwesterly breeze will be warming us up into the afternoon and that threat of storms increases. a look at the severe storm risk zone just updated, that is coming up at 5:11.

alexis how is the friday morning traffic? we have h street in northeast closed between 10th and 11th street this is due to police activity and the police investigation. it is closed in both directions until further notice. elsewhere on the beltway in maryland outer loop after allentown road, two left lanes are blocked on the inner loop one left lane blocked, not causing any significant delays that the hour. 66 near nutley street looking good. beltway at river road in virginia the looking good. looks like a little bit of wet pavement in that area but no reports of delays or incidents. traveling out of leesburg on the dulles tollway, you're traveling at speed. 55 once you pass route 28. more now on that deadly shooting at the census bureau. police are still piecing together exactly what happened at all these different scenes. kidnapping murder and police shoot-out. we have live team coverage for you this morning. megan mcgrath live in suit land at the census bureau where

employees are expected to return to work today. >> reporter: that's right. they are going to be returning later on this morning. but they should know that the main gate at least for now is closed here at the u.s. census bureau. you can see behind me here, the tape that crosses the entrance. and we've seen a number of cars try to turn in and they're being turned away by authorizes at the gate. now, some pretty frightening moments for people who worked here but they will be returning to their offices today. this all began when a man armed with a gun kidnapped his wife on t street in northeast. they ended up here at the gate of the census bureau in suitland maryland. a security guard, 59-year-old lawrence buckner, saw the gunman and his wife arguing inside the car. when he approached, the gunman opened fire and buckner was fatally shot. many census bureau workers, they heard the shots and said it was a very scary and dicey situation. >> the security guard was down because he was in a yellow vest

and i saw a guy driving away really quickly. and another security guard was pursuing on foot shooting at the car. and so we thought, this is really scary. >> reporter: the suspect then spread off after the shooting here at the census bureau. went back into d.c.. police did spot the vehicle. there was gunfire that was shot from the car as it tried to escape. now, everything ended up at 11th and h streets in northeast, that's where police blocked in the car, forced the gunman to crash that vehicle. there hat that point was an exchange of gun suspect and police. the suspect was shot so was an officer. and things wrapped up there. no word on the condition of that gunman. should mention that his wife was located and she is said to be okay. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, megan. part of h street remains closed as police are still

investigating the violent end to all of this. following a police chase officers cornered the suspect and blocked him if in with their cruisers which led to a terrible crash there. witnesses say the gunman got out of his car and started firing shots at officers. >> i heard gunshot, guy got out of a green car shooting at the police officers and they shot back. i thought somebody was shooting a movie at first and then i said, no this is real life. >> suspect's wife was found safe but the gunman was shot multiple times. zachary kiesch just arrived on h street and will bring us up-to-date on all the overnight developments in about ten minutes. the suspect and two police officers are in the hospital this morning. we're working to find out administer on theirmore on their conditions. sources tell news 4 one d.c. police officer was shot in the leg, the suspect was shot several times and a second officer was taken to the hospital with injuries from the crash that ended the car chase.

it theft a path of destruction. and there you see, it flipped over that car. look at that. we can tell you survey teams are going out this morning to assess all the damage in the area. at least one person was killed in her home in a very small town in illinois where up to 20 homes were destroyed. acceptseven people were injured and taken to the hospital. back to you. it's 5:07 now. today all eyes are on president obama and his cuban counterpart raul castro. the president and castro are both in panama for a summit. they will not officially meet one-on-one but even an informal chat would help solidify relations. yesterday secretary of state john kerry met with the cuban foreign minister, that is the highest level meeting between the two countries in more than 50 years. a little later this hour we'll have a report on what changes could be coming in the u.s./cuba relationship. the student government at the university of maryland says

it will support changing the name on the football stadium. some students have called for former university president h.c. curly bird's name to be removed. they say he was a racist and segregationist and his views go against the school's principles. a spokesman for the school says a facility's naming committee is reviewing the issue. prince william county police are searching for a man who tried to take a child from a dale city daycare center. we've received these pictures. they say the than tried to pick up a child at shawl world daycare center last friday. the man came in and named a specific child, but wasn't on the list to pick him up. after reviewing surveillance video, the parents say they did not know him. police say they just want to speak with the man to see whether it was a misunderstanding. an ebola patient admitted to the national institutes of health is free of the disease. that patient was released from the hospital yesterday. the american health care worker was admitted on march 13 with

more. >> reporter: good 340r7k.morning. the crime tape is all over h street. h street is closed. an unbelievable scene from last night. this is kind of a mixed area of both houses of retail, of new bars an restaurants. a lot of government in this area. so to think about the shooting taking place just right here just at 11th street and h street an unbelievable creep. police are trying to correct the dots. this will certainly impact folks as they start their morning commute, but a lot of information still flowing out here this morning. we did know that this suspect this kidnapping suspect, the shooting suspect shts was cornered here on h street after a chase. that's where a shooting took place. both the suspect and officer were shot. they're both in the hospital at this point. we're out here trying to learn more information for you this morning and we'll give to you as

soon as we have it. zachary kiesch reporting live on h street theeft.northeast. back to you. new video this morning of what would become a deadly traffic stop in south carolina. this dash cam camera video shows north charleston officer michael slager pulling over walter scott from a broken taillight. the officer returns to his car and you see scott jumps out of the car and starts running. minutes later, cell phone video captures slager shooting scott in the back killing him. what led to that shooting is not on any recording. officer slager is now charged with murder. >> one other to another mother, i can understand this. so i just want them to know i'm sorry that this happened and that this has made a change in everybody's life. >> that is officer slager's mother. the police department is also coming under fire for their reaction after therare discrepancyies

between the official report and what appears on the cell phone video.report says officers stride to revive scott. the video shows scott on his stomach the whole time. an internal investigation has been ordered after video of sheriff deputies beating a suspect. take a look at this video. a man fled from deputies and stole a horse in san bernardino county. during the chase, the map fallsn falls off the horse and they subdue him using a stun gun. and then they appear to beat him and kick him for more than two minutes. at one point 13 deputies are surrounding the suspect. i'm molette green following a developing story, a car with two children inside plunges into the los angeles harbor. details are still coming in. so far we know a 13-year-old boy has died another boy who is

severe thunderstorm watches for kentucky down to tennessee. that will likely be put in place here for us later this afternoon. we'll probably have a severe thunderstorm watch. but right now local radar not showing any rain away other than just a little bit of patchy drizzle, a little bit of fog, as well. temperatures are chilly. we're still in the 40s. shenandoah valley to the bay. but it is beginning to climb into the 50s in the central and so you were shenandoah valley. that milder air will begin to sweep in later today. but the morning will be rather chilly with temperatures hovering near 50 by 8:00 a.m. chance of a little drizzle. then by noon should jump into the 60s. mostly cloudy. and then the afternoon is when we'll see those storms coming through maybe starting around 3 ouk p.m. most ending in the metro area by 6:00 p.m.. we'll be in the 70s when that happens. here is the hour by hour timing. we'll be fine through the morning. and it's then during the afternoon, leading edge of these storms coming into the mountains by around noontime. and then into the shenandoah valley by 2:00 p.m.. not very severe. likely just getting organized.

it might happen. congress wants its hand in that. at the summit today, president obama has a couple of speeches he's meeting with business leaders. >> tracie potts on capitol hill, thank you. we're waiting to learn whether a hyattsville man will face charges for a hit and run on the bw parkway pl rick warrick was killed on super bowl sunday while trying to fix his car on the side of the road. warrick's fiance was hurt as well. park police say 73-year-old earl teeter who was the driver hit them. investigators say they found pieces of teeter's car at the scene. the deadly shooting of a local rapper was not an accident that is according to new court documents in prince george's county. prosecutors say he meant to shoot ivy. that shooting happened during filming for a music video. court documents show the suspect was identified through the video. prosecutors are not saying what the motive for the shooting was.

a new report shows at least ten people have been able to sneak past fences and officers at our local airports in the past decade. the associated press found dull let had the most breaches reported since 2004. total of eight. one each at reagan national and bwi marshall. that's part of the report that details 268 airport breaches logged nationwide. none was terror related. the virginia railway express will soon begin studying whether to extend its commuter line from maeps manassas to haymarket. if it decides to move ahead, it could be five years before passengers buy their first tickets. the manassas line currently ends at the broad run station. big changes coming to metro. about half of the trains on the red line will switch back to automatic operation next week. this is the first time metro has used automation since that deadly ft. totten accident that killed nine people back in 2009.

wildlife officials are searching for the gator that ate the dog. neighbors have put up signs to warn people. right now there is a massive effort under way to save nearly 150 beached dolphins in japan. some are still alive, but they are extremely week. this is the largest goal fip strappeding on this beach in 15 years. hope they make it back into the owes. scientists are working on a real life trance former. scientists discovered a shifting liquid metal alloy. when they apply electric current respect it it can change its open shape shift into different formations. scientists say the metal could have endless uses.

details in the death of an unarmed suitland man. a newly released 911 tape shows a caller told police an hour before the shooting that michael miner said he had a gun. miner miner's mother says her son was unjustly killed. >> you can't just shoot a person and kill them because of assumption. >> a grand jury ruled the deputies did not violate the law when they killed miner. the new information emerged as part of a multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed by the man's family. jury selection for the come coal theater shooting case is winkd down winding down. 12 jurors and 12 alternates will be seated for the trial. james holmes has pleadsed not guilty by reason of insanity to killing 12 and injuring 70 in that theater attack in july of 2012. opening statements set to start on april 27. prince william county police are searching for a man who
