this is a weather alert day meaning we will have frequent updates all day long as it severe weather threat ramps up. unfortunately, there is a risk of some severe storms with damaging winds and hail and a slight risk of tornados later this afternoon. next a look at the risk zone neighborhoods most in line for severe weather at 6:11. what's happening with our traffic? well, 270 is a little slow heading out of frederick toward gaithersburg but no reports of incidents. beltway running smoothly. beltway at braddock road, all lanes are open. and then again in prince george's county beltway at central avenue seeing a little bit more volume there. and continuing on into montgomery county also looking good with the volume just

increasing. there are three scenes involved in a deadly crime spree. it started when the suspect kidnapped his wife and things escalated at the census bureau headquarters in suitland. that's where megan mcgrath is live. >> reporter: the census bureau is open today, but if you take a look mind me you can see that the main gate is not open. still closed here. we have police tape across the driveway and we've seen all morning long cars being turned around. so if you are reporting to work today, you'll have to enter through a different gate. this all began when a man rmed a with a gun kidnapped his wife on t street in northeast yesterday evening. they ended up at the gate of the census bureau in suitland maryland. that's where a security guard 59-year-old lawrence buckner, saw the gunman and his wife arguing inside the car. when he approached, the gunman

opened fire and buckner was titlely fatally shot. many heard the shots and said it was a very scary situation. >> security guard was town vest and i saw a guy driving away really quickly and another security guard shooting at the car. so we thought oh, my goodness this is really scary. >> reporter: after shaof a after that shooting me his way into d.c. where it came to a violent conclusion. with more i'll send it back to you. >> and he let theehe led police on a chase. you take a look at 11th and h street shut down after the suspect engaged police in a shoot skrout. that suspect was shot several times. coming up, zachary kiesch live with more on how police are still processing that crime scene. family members of the security guard killed are

mourning this morning. his name is lawrence buckner. loved ones were visibly disvaut last might prince george's hospital center. he was married and only 59 years old. sources it at the hospital told news 4 mr. buckner was still alive when he was brought there, he died after 7:00 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the chest. and we're following developments throughout the morning and sending you alerts. we will continue to push out updates during this newscast on our nbc washington app. deching now, we're getting a look he damage from a deadly tornado in illinois. these are live pictures of the debris in fairdale. you can see a massive pile of what used to be a house there. at least would dozen homes were destroyed when this massive twister blew through yesterday. storm chasers captured the strength of the storm as it blew over an 18 wheeler. we know at this point that one person has died and the reports coming in right now are that at

least eight others were hurt. >> 6:05. an ebola patient admitted to national institutes of health is in the clear today. that patient was released from the hospital yesterday. the american health care worker was admitted to nih on march 13 with the ebola virus. nih has not released the name of the patient, but we are learning the man was the 11th bl patientebola patient to be treated in the u.s.. members of the fraternity will not pursue an honor code case. the article created a firestorm for the fraternity but the piece was later retracted. virginia's student run honor code system proceed behinds lie ss ss ss prohibits lying, steal and cheating. today you can buy tickets to wizards home playoff games. tickets go on sale at 11:00

big changes are coming for the red line. starting on monday your commute

will feel a bit different. metro says eight car trains will run on automatic mode. this is the first type since the deadly accident whichilled nine people in 2009. six car trains will still use the manual mode. metro says it has been testing the automation for some time and it's been given the all clear by two independent safety advisors. the remaining trains are waiting for a computer upgrade that will take more than a year. the virginia railway express will soon begin studying whether to extend its commuter line. that means the line could stepped from manassas out to haymarket. if vre moves ahead it it could be five years before passengers buy the first tickets. the manassas line currently ends at the broad run station in bristow. today is a weather alert day. some storms potentially coming into our area. >> tom kierein here to get you ready. >> weather alert day means we will have frequent storm team 4

updates. right now they're way out in ohio, kentucky and tennessee arriving here later this afternoon. impact on the metro area moderate impact. a little bit of drizzle this morning, some fog, the zones likely get the greatest impact in yellow in charles county southern calvert, northern neck of virginia and over toward fredericksburg and shaur lotsville. these neighborhoods here these zones likely could get the greatest risk of some small tornadoes, high winds hail and maybe even enough rain to cause isolated flooding. a look at the hour by hour timing on those storms updated one, that's coming up at 6:21. how is the commute? college parkway and stacey lane all lanes blocked. northbound 95 near route 32, right shoulder blocked. taking a look at travel times, outer loop between 95 and 270

about 8:00 last night, right here on h street between 11th and 12th from what i understand it happened right in front of a sandwich shop. this is a commercial area right here. this sandwich shop taylor sandwiches again an area filled with dry cleaners with restaurants, barber shops. a resident depial area as well. a lot of growth over the last couple of years but ritright here the chase came to an end. they cornered this green honda accord and that's when bullets started for fly. both the suspect, the shoot are i should say, shooter and police officer were shot. both are in the hospital. i talked to one gentleman here not all that long ago, he was being dropped off by a friend, he was inside of a restaurant there when this was all going

down outside. because of all the confusion and chaos outside, he wasn't able to get his car. he came up today trying to get that vehicle. it looks like h street will be closed for most of your morning commute, so please plan accordingly. back to you. it's 6:17. there is also still an active scene at the census bureau headquarters where one of the gates is still closed this morning after the shooting death of that guard. megan mcgrath is at the complex and will join us live in about 15 minutes. a developing story out of california right now. and internal investigation has been ordered after video of deputies beating a suspect. a man stole a horse to get away from deputies in san bernardino county. during the chase the man falls off the horse and that's when deputies subdue him using a stun gun and then as you can see

here they appear to be beating and kicking the man for more than two minutes. remains have been found during the search for a missing longwood university student. 18-year-old anhad been missing since march 3. the remains will be septembernt to determine the cause of death. congressman kmings is calling for a culture change. supervisor is accused of assaulting a female agent. morales has been stripped of clearance and is on administrative leave. congressman cummings says he's glad that in this case director joseph clancy was notified immediately and took action. a former virginia delegate is suing his own party. joe morrissey wants the court to

review hundreds of signatures rejected by the democratic signatures are on his application to run for state claims the officials dlish bratly rejected valid signatures a party spokesman calls the allegations bizarre. morrissey served jail time for having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old girl. former members of a church planning their largest protest yet. as first reported in the loudoun times, the church sun deris under investigation after several claims of sexual abuse and now the pastor's son has posted a message threatening protesters. the post has since been deleted. >> his only mechanism to fight back is to threaten because that's what he knows. >> that sign in front of the church promote as big auto show this saturday. protesters say they will be there, too. david culver sent a facebook

formally announce that she is running for the democratic nomination for president on sunday. that's according to a report in the new york "post". the guardian newspaper says it will happen on twitter around noon. clinton is expected to hit the trail heading for a state where she did not perform as well last time iowa. google executive chairman eric schmidt will get the commencement address next month at virginia tech. a group students from loudoun county hoping to compete in the world robotic competition is expected to make a major announcement today. check out this video. this is the team dubbed as outsiders. the team experienced a major setback when the school suv with their robot and equipment was stolen. we don't know what today's announcement will be. we're hoping that they found their equipment or they got a

information about the praises here. they will be operating on a two hour delay. but workers who had to shelter in place last night, they have been granted an excused absence. however essential workers are expected to report on time. the front gate here remains closed. you can see the tape across it here. so you'll have to use one of the other gates to report to work. this all began when a man armed with a gun kidnapped his wife on t street in northeast last night. they eventually ended up though at the gate of the census bureau here in suitland maryland. a security guard, 59-year-old lawrence the gunman and his wife arguing inside the car. when he approached, the gunman opened fire and buckner was fatally shot. many census bureau workers were inside the building at the time they heard the shots. they say it was a very fright evening situation. >> scary. i saw the incident i saw the security guard getting cpr.

he was driving drunk on lee highway last year when he slammed into a car at ft. myer drive. the 24-year-old driver of the chrysler was killed. he had just gotten his license back after having it suspended for a year. we're waiting to learn whether there will be charges. rick warrick was killed super bowl sunday trying to fix his car on the side of the road. his fiance was hurt as well. u.s. park police say 73-year-old earl teeter was the driver who hit them. investigators say they found pieces of teat teeter's car at the scene. police are searching for a man who tried to take a child from a dale city daycare center. take a look to pick up a child at small world daycare center last friday. the man came in and named a specific child but wasn't on the list to pick them up.

after reviewing surveillance video, parents said they did not know the man. police just want to speak to him to see whether this was a misunderstanding. today a somber event in texas. more five years after the shooting rampage at ft. hood those who were wounded or killed will southwest purple heart. former major nidal hasan was convicted and sentenced to death. if you have unpaid tolls there taking the express lanes in northern virginia, you could get your case dropped. this week a fairfax county judge dimmed a case -- dismissed rather a case against a fredericksburg woman. the judge found the statute of limitations had good pird. the x. fired. the company waited a rear before beginning the court case. this opens the door for other at the times to make the same argument. even though there is a potential for strong storms today, it shouldn't affect all the cherry blossoms. just the ones that have already

one person is dead after a massive tornado whipped through northern illinois. storm chasers captured this video showing the shear strength of this storm as it blew over an 18 wheeler. look at that. one of the hardest hit towns is about 80 miles west of chicago.

>> reporter: i'm live in fairdale illinois about 80 miles west of chicago where a tornado has devastated this town. if you look behind me, in looks like it was a business structure here. that is what this entire up to looks like. it's about a community of 200 people. 50 or 60 structures in this community, every single structure has been affected. if you take a look on the other side there is a yell will he piece of equipment. this is why think this is a place of business. that's a scissors lift. and that looks like it has bricks covering all of the structure there. there are two vehicles here. and if you can see they have been tagged. so the fire department has come through the area and they have cleared this area. so they did not find anybody in this structure. and that's what they're doing, they're going through the community, checking houses rechecking they said at least twice to make sure everybody in

following all morning for you. police are monitoring two of the three locations connected to a deadly shooting at the census bureau. >> we have live team coverage. megan mcgrath is live in suitland where a security guard is was killed but we begin with zachary kiesch where police took down the suspect. >> reporter: as the sun rises here on h street, we're seeing a lot of folks like this gentleman lean trying to get to vehicles and things blocked off. this happened yesterday at about 8:00. you see the gentlemen getting in right now. i talked to a gentleman earlier who was being dropped off by a friend trying to get their vehicles. this all happened about 8:00 last night in the middle of the street. it was an unbelievable scene. it sounds like a western or old gangster movie, but it wasn't. it happened right here in a growing part of town. we're not all that far away from union station. it's a place that we see a lot

of restaurants and a lot of action typically here. from what i understand from the information that we know police identified this green honda accord at about 7:30 the chase ended here with a shoot-out in the middle of the street. we're talking about h street northeast d.c.. h street is closed. cars being diverted. but there are people getting in and getting their vehicles. back to you. we continue our team coverage at the headquarters of the census bureau. megan mcgrath live there in suit land. and we're learning there is an important message for employees. >> reporter: yeah the u.s. census bureau headquarters here in suitland because of this crime spree and what happened here last night, they are going to be operating on a two hour delay today. so employees should report two hours late. with the exception of workers who had to shelter in place. while the shooting was actually taking place. those workers have been given an

carolina police officer being character charged with murder. dash camera video shows michael slager pulling over walter scott for a broken taillight. we now are getting to the scene and how it unfolded from gabe guttierez live in north charleston for us. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. quhil while this video does fill in some gaps, but it does not actually show any type of struggle or the shooting. still this morning state investigators are now saying that they had suspicions about this shooting from the very beginning. now, the video shows walter scott pulling into an auto parts store. it was apparently a routine traffic stop and the oir wentfficer went up asked for license and registration. scott said he recently bought the car from a neighbor. a few seconds later, scott bolts from the car. it is unclear why he ran, but

previously his family had said he may have been trying to avoid jail time because he'd been previously arrested for back child support. now, this morning we're also hearing for the first time from the family of officer slager his mother says that she is devastated she has not seen the video yet and she does not plan to. she has also not spoken with her son but she wanted to ed toed to apologize saying this is devastating for everyone involved. his funeral, scott's funeral is now set for saturday. the officer loss not yet entered a plea. he remains in jail with no bail. back to you. >> gabe guttierez live in north charleston. thank you. look for more of gabe's report on the "today" show. i'm molette green at the live desk. just got new information we now know the police officer shot in anne arundel county suffered serious condition and was taken to shock trauma in baltimore. right now there is a
