erin. >> i'm eun yang. let's start off with your forecast. a beautiful one at that. looking forward to it. >> we are looking forward to the warm-up that we have been experiencing over the last day or so. we want to check in with storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein. what's the good news? >> the good news is we'll keep the wonderful, mild weather party going on today. a few scattered sprinkles on the storm team 4 radar. this little patch of green and that stretches farther south and west between hagerstown and winchester. this little batch of some scattered sprinkles very light. some of them not even reaching the ground tracking to the east this morning. won't last very long. temperatures are a bit chilly. in the 40s nearby suburbs. in washington now 52. then farther to our west there's some milder air moving into the mountains in the shenandoah valleys, to near 60 degrees there already with a southerly breeze that will be warming nicely. cool morning, mild afternoon.

showers likely moving in tomorrow. look at your bus stop forecast what to wear weather that's all coming up at the next traffic and weather on the ones. what's happening on the roads? >> good morning. no problems from annapolis all along route 50 into route 202. then further into the district all lanes are open, no delays. looking at the beltway no reports of delays on the inner or the outer loop. a very nice morning commute this morning. here's a live look at river road in virginia. elsewhere, 66 looking good. all the way into the beltway, inside the beltway no reports of delays as well. we have an accident in stafford. meyers drive at karen terrace. all lanes are blocked in that area. >> thank you, alexis. right now, some metro trains are doing something they haven't done in nearly six years, automatic train operation is up and running on the red line. this is the first time trains have been running automatically since that deadly crash at ft.

tauten in 2009. megan mcgrath is live with what changes the commuters should expect this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, eun. it was a terrible crash that happened back in 2009. a metro train slammed into another train that was stopped on the tracks near the ft. tauten station. nine people died and many more were injured. in the wake of that crash, metro stopped using the automated system and they went to manual control of trains. well, ever since that accident metro has been making safety improvements and now they are at the point where they can return once again to the automated system. that is happening today. so the computer is going to handle the train that will be controlling the train. there will still be a person in the cab to open and close doors and to make announcements but the automated system will be handling acceleration. deceleration as well as stopping the trains. this is happening starting today

on just the red line. only with the eight car trains. six car trains they need a software update and they'll be getting that. so they'll go over to the automated system at a later date. but today those eight car trains on the red line will be automated. metro says that going back to the automated system will be more efficient. will make for faster rides. the trains will be more consistently spaced out. things are starting to pick up here at the station this morning. we'll talk to riders and see with what they think about the return to the automated system. back to you guys. >> megan mcgrath, thank you. well, tomorrow is going to be another big day for metro as well. the first 7,000 series trains will go into service on the blue line tomorrow morning. we'll get a preview ride today. news4's adam tuss will be on board and he'd tweet out everything you need to know about the new cars. you can watch his full reports starting on news4 at 5:00 p.m. new developments on a

maryland couple with a controversial parenting style. montgomery county police brought that child's children to child protective services yesterday. they picked them up after a concerned citizen told the officers they were left unattended. we're still waiting to hear from the the meitiv family. cps began to investigate back in december after the 10-year-old and 5-year-old were found walking home alone from a playground. the meitivs says they're trying to teach their children self-relines and responsibility. a mom facing child neglect charges in baltimore. she is accused of leaving her 3-year-old in a car while she went gambling at the horseshoe casino. jade germany was arrested, and someone notified an officer when they saw the little boy sleeping in the back seat. according to police, she knowed no remorse and she said she needed money.

every day americans need a champion and i want to be that champion. >> right now, hillary clinton is on a 1,000 mile road trip. she's heading to first in the nation caucus state iowa. by now we have seen clinton's short video announcing her 2016 bid. in that clip she talks about helping american families quote get ahead and stay ahead. >> hillary clinton represents the worst of the washington machine. >> within hours, republicans were on on the attack. rand paul has already responded to clinton by releasing an attack ad. jeb bush posted a video yesterday saying that the u.s. must do better than the quote obama/clinton foreign policy. and also today another republican candidate will jump into the race. "the washington post" reports florida senator marco rubio will formally announce his bid for the presidency this evening. he's speaking at the historic freedom tower a back drop that highlights his cuban heritage.

he has slammed president obama's foreign policy for years and his announcement comes days after the president held the first meeting in decades with the cuban president. d.c. police have not released the man's name and he was found yesterday. right now they're working to figure out how the howard student death. the death of a bowie high schooler is a mystery this morning. maryland state police are investigating how he died. he was coming back from the rotc field trip and he started to feel sick. then he stopped breathing. he was just 16 years old. breaking news a stabbing we have just learned in alexandria and right now, police are looking for a suspect. alexandria police tell us it happened after 2:00 a.m. a man suffered from stab wounds

a terrible car crash followed by a deadly shooting in milwaukee, wisconsin. this morning, police are trying to figure out whether the two were connected. a 15-year-old was shot and killed and police are still looking for suspects right now. we're learning more about how a group of thieves made off with tens of millions of dollars in jewels in london. take a look at these pictures.

hearing -- that he was hearing voices at the time of cross' murder. the nearly seven-year legal saga of jodi arias today comes to a close today. she will serve life behind bars. the only thing that a judge will decide today is whether she will be eligible for parole after 25 years. it is not clear whether she will address the court before her sentencing. we could learn the verdict in aaron hernandez's murder trial today. the former new england patriot player is accused of killing his friend odin lloyd two years ago. the jurors have spent days in a total of nearly 20 hours discussing their decision. today will mark the fifth day of deliberations. we're learning new information about a "washington post" journalist being held in iran.

an iranian news agency says jason rezaian is accused of acting against the country. he will stand trial before the revolutionary court which handles cases involving national security. "the washington post" calls the spying allegations absurd. he has been held in tie ran for over -- tehran for over eight months. the war in afghanistan may be officially over but 9,800 troops are still serving there. last week, 22-year-old army specialist john dawson was killed. he was the first to die since the war was officially declared over in december. last month president obama announced troop levels would not decrease this year as planned. that was not welcome news for families who already lost loved ones to war. knowing what we have been through and what he went over there for, i wouldn't say it was right to say it was over for another family that might go through this. >> more than 2,300 americans have given their lives in the war in afghanistan. the president says the goal is to have only embassy security in

place in afghanistan by the end of 2016. there is new video of a black man killed by a white sheriff's deputy in oklahoma. and a warning you may want to look away or just mute your tv for now. you cannot see what happens, but you can hear the gunshot. the sheriff's office is now calling it a mistake. >> on your stomach. now! [ gunshot ] >> well, according to the sheriff's office the reserve deputy who killed eric harris meant to grab his taser instead. in fact you can hear him apologize after making that shot. the deputy was part of a sting operation trying to catch harris illegally selling a gun. the sheriff's office says the deputy did not commit a crime, saying he was quote in a stressful situation. end quote. it was captured entirely on a police body camera. seattle police are now testing out a program to equip their

officers with cameras. you're looking at one of those right there. it's a little blurred out for privacy. the one officer there say he supports the program. >> for myself i want my actions to be recorded because i want to be able to stand up and say this is what happened. here's the video of it. >> audio and video recorded, okay? >> a federal investigation found a pattern of excessive force in the seattle police department which led to this program. the department was one of more than 20 around the country investigated for racial bias. we are still working to learn why a maryland police chief is stepping down this morning. the delmarva daily times reports that scott keller has decided to retire. princess anne county is where a family of eight people died from carbon monoxide poisoning a week ago.

how are the roads now? >> good morning, tom. we are still dealing with some delays on the penn south line. we have power outages that are causing some significant delays anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes. so that's going to be there are to a while. brunswick east 870, a 12 minute delay. route 50 we have heard reports of debris on the roadway. police are in the area looking for it. routes 210 headed up to the beltway. 55 miles an hour. route 5 and 301 no reports of incidents or delays. 395 at king street is looking good with all lanes open. no reports of incidents. then 270 out of frederick is running slow right now. but no reports of incidents at this time. back to you. >> thanks. we're work to find out why a philadelphia mother was hospitalized after being arrested in montgomery county. police tracked down nyia parler to silver spring after her quadriplegic son was abandoned in a philadelphia park. police say after parler left her son in the park she came to

silver spring to visit her boyfriend. her boyfriend turned her in to police. parler's 21-year-old son was found lying in the leaves covered with a blanket next to a wheelchair and a bible. >> a lot of things could have happened out there. he's in the middle of the wooded area. you have wild animals out there, you never know what can happen. he can't defend himself. he does not function at all. at. >> parler's son was hospitalized with dehydration and cuts to his body. parler was hospitalized after she was arrested to receive treatment for an unknown reason. she is facing several charges including kidnapping and assault. a second person has been arrested in the shooting of an anne arundel police officer. we sent you a breaking news alert on the nbc washington app as soon as this story broke on friday morning. police arrested danielle blake yesterday. she is charged with conspiracy to commit attempted murder. the first suspect, colvin white was arrested on friday.

corporate larry adams was patrolling part of the arnold area friday morning and police say he was shot after chasing a suspicious person. he was upgraded to serious condition over the weekend. three week are expected to be okay after being shot on a way to a party in wood bridge. a large group was headed to the party in dale boulevard yesterday morning. someone pulled up in an suv and then opened fire on that group, hitting one man and two teenagers. police say the party was advertised on social media. a maryland family hoping that you can help find her. their teenage daughter. this is jennifer castillo. she was last seen saturday in takoma park on university boulevard in new hampshire avenue. family members say that's where she was dropped off to catch a bus to the mall. she was wearing dark blue jeans, black shirt and white sneakers. 5:34 now. it's not clear when a fairfax

county bakery will reopen after a car crashed through the front door. look at this scene here. six people were hurt none seriously. fairfax county police released the pictures of the car. it ended up completely inside the napoleon bakery. the store is closed right now. the owners say they're working to find out whether the building is structurally safe. three people are recovering right now from a serious crash in maryland. one man hit a tree and was ejected 75 feet from his car. take a look. you can see montgomery county firefighters working to pull him to safety here. this happened on the clara barton parkway near the exit. the man is expected to survive as are two other people who are hurt in that crash. d.c. mayor mariel bowser will share more details about her spending plans for the district. she is testifying at a budget oversight hearing. bowser presented her budget earlier this month and she is calling for a sales tax and

i started a new career recently. this is a fifth generation company which means a lot to me. >> as one of many people who are speaking in the video launching hillary clinton's campaign for president and right now, clinton is on the road heading for iowa. clinton is clearly hoping to reintroduce herself to voters in the all-important state of iowa. but poll numbers there show it won't be easy. let's check in with nbc's tracy potts with a look at what iowa voters are looking for right now. good morning. >> reporter: they are and have always been looking to connect -- good morning, everyone. iowa voters get very involved in their campaigns and their candidates. the clinton campaign knows that and that's what i they're on the road as -- why they're on the road as question speak. her national numbers look good. in the last nbc news/"wall street journal" poll she was at 44% favorability beating president obama and all the republicans out there.

but her iowa numbers, not so much. remember she came in third last time. she ran for president there. and the latest quinnipiac poll when it comes to people thinking she's honest and her trustworthiness, her numbers don't look so good. 49% to 43%. and so that's something that they want to work on. while in iowa she'll speak tomorrow at a community college. they have a lot of smaller events scheduled, roundtables with business leaders. she is touring a company on wednesday during that two-day trip. again, to try to get that image out there of hillary clinton interacting directly with people in iowa. >> all right, tracie potts, thank you. former maryland mayor martin o'malley promising to bring a robust debate if he decides to challenge clinton. his spokesperson said that the democratic party would benefit from the debate. these's one of a handful of democrats who appear likely to challenge clinton.

jim webb and bernie sanders are both eyeing bids for the nomination. new video this morning has surfaced showing isis militants destroying the syrian city. they're using electric saws and drills and isis has destroyed artifacts at the 3,000-year-old city and then set off lots of explosives. well, nbc news has not independently verified the claims. today lawyers will choose 12 of more than 100 jury candidates to hear the case of colorado theater shooting suspect james holmes. he's charged with killing 12 people and hurting 70 others in an attack on a movie theater three years ago. holmes' lawyer says he was having a psychotic episode at the time. prosecutor say holmes should be sentenced to death. his trial begins two weeks from today. a fairfax county inmate was

hit with a stun gun four times new details about that death came out over the weekend in "the washington post." an incident report says natasha mckenna initially cooperated with police and agreed to be handcuffed but then she tried to fight her way out. six officers in bio hazard suits put her in restraints and hit her four times with the stun gun. the fairfax county sheriff defends the use of force. police in minnesota say a body they pulled out of the mississippi river is that of a missing boy. the medical examiner confirmed the boy is 10-year-old barnway collins. he's been missing for a month. the boy's father is the prime suspect in his death. the father denies any involvement in his son's death. a kayaker is in the hospital right now after a surprise storm caused chaos for a group of boaters. take a look at this scene here. two of them died. you're looking at video from the beginning of their trip when you can see the waters are pretty

springtime in washington is in full effect. the cherry trees came out, oh, i guess about last thursday or so. when i was down here on a run. so we have had a couple of nice days. the weekend couldn't have been nicer. i talked to the photographers getting ready to take their early sunrise shots, getting the postcard ready pictures to come along. sunrise is just after 6:30 this morning so if you haven't gotten your pictures down here yet, there's one more classic sunrise in 40 or 50 minutes from now. come over and say hello. couldn't be any nicer of a morning. temperature is at 51 degrees and not much of a breeze blowing just yet, tom. going to be a perfect day to come down here. pack your patience. >> looks great. looks like the photographers are getting ready for the sunrise there. we'll have a partly cloudy to clear sky.
