southbound side of 95. here's a look at the beltway in virginia. braddock road no reports of incidents or delays in this area. still looking slow at 270 out of frederick at old hundred road. we'll keep you updated. angie and eun, back to you? >> right now your commute is changing in a big way on the red line. metro is switching back to automatic train operation this morning. nearly six years after that deadly crash near the fort totten station. megan mcgrath has a look at what the passengers can expect this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. it was back in 2009 that that deadly accident occurred metro train slammed into another train that was stopped near the fort totten station. nine people were killed. many more were injured and following that accident metro stopped using their automated computer system. they went over to manual

controls. well, since that accident metro has been making lots of safety improvements and they're at the point that they can return to the automated system and that's happening on the red line beginning this morning. at in fact it's already begun with the longer trains along the red line. so there will still be a person inside the cab to open and close the door and make announcements, but everything else is being done by a compute system. going to the automated system going back to it will make for faster rides and you might also see some of the jerkiness that you see with the manual controls go away. riders certainly hope so. >> i have been noticing a lot of that jerkiness and they start to stop and you think -- you get up and you think that, you know, then everything is good. then all of a sudden they keep going a little bit. you're kind of jarred. >> reporter: and i'm going to jump on a train here in a little bit and i will let you know coming up in the next 45 minutes

how it went this morning for me or at least on my ride. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath for us thank you. there are a few other things to know about this change. first of all, not every train on the red line will be operating automatically. only eight car trains will be automatic. six car trains need a software update that's currently being installed and this change is only being made on the red line right now. the rest of the lines on metro are not expected to return to automatic operation until late 2017. and you may just get lucky enough to catch a ride on a brand new metro car tomorrow. the first 7,000 series trains will go into service on the blue line tomorrow morning. we'll get a preview ride news4's adam tuss will be on board. he'll tweet out the information you need to know about the new cars and he'll be here at 5:00 a.m. a maryland couple with a

controversial parenting style and montgomery county police brought the children to child protective services yesterday. they picked them up in silver spring after a concerned citizen told the officers that the children were left alone. we're still waiting to hear from maytive family. well cps began investigating back in september. the meitivs say they're trying to teach their children self-reliance and responsibility. the mother of a 3-year-old is facing charges. police say she left her son alone in a car while she went gambling in baltimore. officers arrested jade germany on saturday. investigators say someone notified an officer when they saw the little boy sleeping in the car and the police report says germany showed no remorse when police confronted her. she simply said she needed money. it is now 6:05.

the murder trial of a d.c. department of corrections official is set to begin today. carolyn cross was found dead inside her alexandria apartment in september of 2014. police say 29-year-old dawit seyoum murdered cross. attorneys for seyoum said he was hearing voices at the time of the murder. today we should get a much closer look at how d.c. mayor muriel bowser plans to budget for next year. she seal testify in an oversight hearing. she's calling for sales tax and parking tax increases. her plan cuts higher education spending. the plan includes more money for homeless services, school modernization and the streetcar program. today you can watch a re-enactment of one of the last things abraham lincoln did before his death. starting at noon a group of people will ride on horse back from the white house to the president's lincoln's cottage monument in northwest d.c. a retirement home for veterans

good morning. weather and traffic on the ones now at 6:11. yeah we're still basking in the euphoria from the fabulous weekend weather. just a few scattered sprinkles to our north now and for the day today, you will need a jacket this morning. still rather cool but then later today you'll be comfortable in short sleeves. have the sunglasses handy as well. at the bus stop waiting for the metro, it will be around 50 degrees between 7:00 and 8:00. a bit of a breeze getting us into the mid and upper 50s between 8:00 and 9:00. a look at the commute ahead for the day, that's coming up next at 6:21. how is the commute going now, alexis? >> good morning. no reports on the inner or the outer loop however, in virginia a small problem, but not too many delays. the outer loop of the beltway, a disabled vehicle on the shoulder. as you can see from the drive time, not causing any delays as you travel southbound in virginia. elsewhere, 95 north bound, prince william beltway, 18 minute ride and westbound at 50

we're working to find out when a woman arrested in montgomery county will be extradited to philadelphia. police tracked down nyia parler to silver spring after her quadriplegic son was abandoned in a park. after she left him in a park, she came to silver spring to visit her boyfriend. the man was found lying in the leaves covered with a blanket next to a wheelchair and a bible. parler's bible turned her in to police. >> the boyfriend had no

knowledge of what happened here. he was under the impression she needed a break and came down here. so it's a very disturbing case. >> parler was hospitalized after she was arrested to receive treatment for an unknown reason. she is facing several charges. we spoke with one advocate and she says people shouldn't be quick to judge the mother's actions. >> i wouldn't label her a monster. i would label her as somebody who was highly strained and made a very bad decision. >> advocates say that there are resources for struggling families for example the government provides waivers that can help with the cost of housing, education and even long-term care. new information to a story you first learned about with a push alert from the nbc washington app on friday. a second person is now facing charges for the shooting of an anne arundel police officer. danielle blake was arrested yesterday and she's charged with conspiracy to commit attempted murder.

the first suspect colvin white was arrested on friday. corporal larry adams was patrolling part of the arnold area friday morning. police say he was shot shot after chasing a suspicious person. adams was upgraded to serious condition over the weekend. it's 6:17. there's new video of a black man killed by a white sheriff's deputy in oklahoma. a warning you may want to look away or mute your tv right now. you can't see what happens here but you can hear the gunshot the sheriff's office is now calling a mistake. >> on your stomach, now! [ gunshot ] >> according to the tulsa county sheriff's office the reserve deputy who killed eric harris meant to grab his taser. the deputy was part of a sting operation trying to catch harris illegally selling a gun. the deputy did not commit a crime, saying he was quote in a stressful situation. we're still working right now to learn why a maryland police chief is stepping down

this morning. the delmarva daily times reports that princess ann's chief scott keller has decided to retire. princess anne is where eight people died from carbon monoxide poisoning a week ago. city officials are at no commenting on the timing -- are not commenting on the timing of the departure. three people are expected to be okay after they were shot on the way to a party in wood bridge. they say a large group was headed to a party near forest day avenue and dale boulevard yesterday morning. someone pulled up in the suv and opened fire on the group. hitting one man and two teenagers. police say the party was advertised on social media. we could learn the verdict in aaron hernandez's murder trial today. the former new england patriots player is accused of killing his friend odin lloyd two years ago. jurors had already spent days and a total of 20 hours to

discuss their decision. parents with looking for a child who's been missing since saturday. look at this picture here. this is jennifer castillo 16 years old. she was last seen in takoma park in new hampshire avenue. that's where she was dropped off to catch a bus to the mall. castillo was wearing dark blue jeans, a black shirt and white sneakers. right now no major reports of damage after two earthquakes jolted los angeles. a 2.5 quake hit last night and then a few hours later a 3.5 magnitude quake struck. today, spacex is launching another rocket into space. it is headed for the international space station and carrying a lot of supplies. we'll be watching nasa's twitter feed to make sure the launch goes off without any problems.

children are missing their shots. they found 28% of the children were either missing vaccines or missing records to show that they indeed had them. the study was published in the journal of pediatrics. on a news -- a news crew captures the moment a manhole explodes, sending it 100 feet into the air. take look. >> watch yourself. watch yourself. >> heads up heads up! >> well you hear that explosion and take a look. that manhole flew way up above the buildings. this happened in buffalo, new york. an underground electrical fire started around noon yesterday. witnesses say smoke was pouring out of the manholes. eventually, causing three explosions. no one was hurt by the explosions because police had already evacuated the area. and that was fortunate because once you see the manhole, how much pressure it took to get it up that high. >> i know. unbelievable. thankfully, everybody was able to get out of the way. well, the presidential race

today, florida senator marco rubio will formally announce his bid for the presidency. rubio heads to the historic freedom tower tonight. it is a back drop that highlights his cuban heritage. he's slammed president obama's foreign policy for years and his announcement comes days after the president held a historic meeting with the cuban president. by now you know hillary clinton threw her hat into the ring yesterday and is headed to iowa. a little later in the hour we'll look at the heat she's already taking from republicans. we'll also have more on what former maryland governor and potential clinton challenger has to say about her campaign. i'm molette green at the live desk with new poll numbers this morning showing virginia voters supporting a deal with iran. this just released quinnipiac poll found 92% of voters believe that iran is a threat to the country. two-thirds would like to see a

plan in place that restricts iran's nuclear program and in exchange for easing sanctions. now president obama's job approval rating is remaining deeply negative with 45% approving of the job he's done. 53% disapproving that's the latest from the live desk. angie, back to you. >> thank you so much. maryland lawmakers have until midnight to pass a budget. there was a budget compromise but it's unknown if they'll pass some of the initiatives that are important to the deal. the house delegates is scheduled to vote on three of hogan's priorities. they include measures aimed at expanding charter schools and ending state mandated storm water fees and also providing some tax relief on military pensions. we now know how spotsylvania is reporting to the problems at voting machines in virginia. the county is planning to spend

$300,000 to replace any defective machines. we told you last week one-fifth of those machines in the commonwealth may have wireless connection issues. well tomorrow the state board of elections is holding a public meeting to discuss how the problem can be fixed. it is now 6:34. a fairfax county inmate was hit with a stun gun four times before she died earlier this year. new details about that death came out over the weekend in "the washington post." an incident report shows natasha mckenna initially cooperated with police and agreed to be handcuffed. but then she tried to fight her way out. the report says six officers in bio hazard suits placed her legs and arms in restrantds and then hit her four times with a stun gun. the fairfax county sheriff defends the use of force. today jurors will choose 12

candidates to hear the case of james holmes. he is charged with killing people in an attack on a movie theater three years ago. the lawyer said he was having a psychotic episode at the time and prosecutors say holmes should be sentenced to death. his trial begins two weeks from today. there will be grief counselors at howard university today to help the community remember a former student who died. we are working to learn his name right now. d.c. police say they found the man unconscious yesterday around michigan avenue and franklin street northeast. it's still not clear why he died. and bowie high schoolers are mourning a classmate time. okon ntekim was coming back from a field trip with the bowie high school rotc when he started to feel sick on the bus. then he stopped breathing. maryland state police are working to find out just what happened. ntekim was just 16 years old. congress returns to work and they're already facing some big deadlines. here's a quick run down of what's on their plate. they have two days to make a deal on how doctors are paid by medicare.

governor martin o'malley may challenge clinton. his spokesperson released a statement yesterday saying quote, the democratic party will benefit from a robust issues debate and should governor o'malley decide to enter the race he will bring one. right now, some metro trains are doing something they haven't done in nearly six years. automatic train operation is up and running. it's first time that the trainsb have running automatically since the deadly crash at fort totten back in 2009. megan mcgrath finished taking a ride on the rails and megan, the change is supposed to make this ride a little smoother. what do you think? >> reporter: you know i did notice a difference. they went to the manual system after that crash back in 2009. so you had an operator in the train starting and stopping the train. this morning the longer trains, the eight-car trains on the red line they have gone back to the automated system so it's now a computer that's actually accelerating and stopping the

train. take a look at this video that i shot. i took a little trip here a short time ago. i went here from the grovener station in an eight-car train. when we came to the station and the computer started to brake, i have to say it was pretty smooth. i jumped off got on to one of the six-car trains which was going in the opposite direction to get back here to the live truck. those six-car trains, they are still being operated manually. so it was actually a person in the cab that stopped the train when we arrived. i did notice that it was a little bit jerkier than the smoother -- jerkier than the automated trip i took. nothing dramatic, it wasn't crazy or anything. i have to say i was looking for it but i did notice a difference. perhaps some riders will notice that today as well. for the first time they have those red trains, the eight cars running on that automated system. so something new they'll be doing the six cars later on once they do some software upgrades.

have been criticized for their parenting style, their children were brought to child protective services yesterday. someone told officers the children were alone. this morning we're still waiting to hear from the meitiv family. they made national headlines last year for so-called free range style of parenting. cps began investigating in december after the 10-year-old and 5-year-old were found walking home alone from the playground. the meitivs say they're trying to teach their children self-reliance and responsibility. it is time now to look at d.c. we should get a closer look today at how d.c. mayor muriel bowser plans to budget for next year. she will testify in just a few hours at an oversight hearing. bowser presented her budget earlier this month and she's calling for sales tax and parking tax increases. her plan cuts higher education spending. the plan includes more money for homeless services school modernization and the streetcar program.
