now. now to the breaking news guilty of first degree murder for aaron hernandez. this verdict now trending on twitter. we want to show you what it looked like just 30 minutes ago when the jury came back returning after seven days of deliberations in the murder trial of the former new england patriots player. he was also found guilty on other charges relating to this case. there were people crying and sobbing in the courtroom, including hernandez's mom and fiance. >> what say you madam foreperson? is the defendant not guilty guilty of first degree in the first degree or guilty of murder in the second degree. >> guilty of murder in the first degree. and there you just heard the verdict read. hernandez didn't appear to show much emotions. his eyes were red but, again, he -- there were visible sobs and cries in the courtroom. he did turn around look to his mother and girlfriend mouthing the words "be strong be

strong." now, this man who once had a $40 million contract with the patriots now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. prosecutors argued hernandez planned to kill a man who was dating his fiance's sister. that's the latest from the live desk. eun? >> did not shoot. unit eight, stand off. stand off. gun is loaded. stay off. a police officer in arizona will not face charges for hitting a suspect with his patrol car. take a look at this. this is dash cam video released by police showing the suspect being hit. police say mario valencia robbed a 7-eleven set fire to a church stole a car and then stole a rifle. that all happened within a few hours back in february. the police chief is defending the officer's actions, but valencia's attorney does not agree. >> the guy probably is still

alive because the officer took the action that he took because had he continued to press down the street or walk toward sergeant control, these officers have no choice but to begin firing. >> i think it's shocking. i think it's clearly excessive police force. >> the suspect survived the collision but faces several felony charges. nbc's miguel almaguer will have the latest in this hour. now at midday we're learning more about an arrest made in connection with last week's synagogue vandalism in gaithersburg. we told you about the vandalism last tuesday. swastikas and other references were spray painted on the outside of the synagogue. montgomery county police tweeted out that a man was arrested. we're still working to learn more about who that man is and why he did it. we have a developing story right now. a nuclear deal with iran could be in jeopardy. this morning, iran's president

said his country would only accept a deal limiting iran's nuclear program if world powers simultaneously lifted all sanctions imposed against his country. that could be a problem for president obama who is expected to give congress a say in any deal including the right to veto the lifting of sanctions. yesterday, republicans and democrats on the senate foreign relations committee unanimously approved legislation giving congress the right to reject any nuclear agreement with iran. chuck? good morning, barbara, good morning, everybody. in your weather headlines for today, more clouds than rain drops for a wednesday afternoon coming our way. our milder-than-average pattern seems to be making a bit of a comeback as well and for better or for worst there are a couple rain chances coming up heading into your weekend. for today, full cloud cover outside but a north to northeasterly wind has drier air at the surface. these rain drops trying to run up over the top of it are evaporating before they get to the ground so as a result i think our rain chances are low in the metro today.

boston will mark two years since the 2013 marathon bombing. a city wide moment of silence will be held at 2:49 p.m., the time the first bomb exploded. boston's mayor has declared april 15 "one boston day," a knewnew tradition to honor the city's resilience. he's asked boston's residents to show an act of kindness today. three people were killed and 260 were injured during the bombing. very soon we could see frequent travel between the u.s. and cuba and a cuban embassy here in the district. that's because president obama announced he's taking cuba off the list of state sponsors of terrorism. it was on the list for the last 50 years. his decision now goes to congress where it's already generating reaction on both sides. lawmakers can vote to overturn the change by acting within the

immediate metro but if you're living or traveling to the central and southern parts of the shenandoah valley your rain chances are higher than that. what about tomorrow? a mostly cloudy but dry day. showers arriving sundaydown or later. we'll talk about the weekend when i see you next. the concept of free range parenting is in the news again. the silver spring couple in trouble after the young kids were found walking alone again and now these parents are planning to sue. their lawsuit stems from an incident on sunday. montgomery county police handed over their children to child protective services. the kids aged six and ten were spotted walking alone from a park near their home. the meitivs believe in free range parenting. we asked dr. joshua weiner about the pros and cons of free range versus helicopter parenting. dr. weiner tell us about this. >> the helicopter parent is the classic overprotective parent,

the parent who hovers around their kids wanting to protect them from any possible emotional or physical harm. so this is really the parent who wants to make sure they're there with every -- their child every step of the way. >> but all the scary things we hear about happening to children isn't it surprising that somebody would hover over their children? >> i think it's unnecessary and i think studies have shown that that type of parenting has negative consequences. so i think parents need to be careful about being overprotective because it can have negative impacts on their child. >> and the other style? >> the other style is the reverse, this is the free-range parent, the parent who gives their child a very long leash to go out and do what they want to do. this is the type of parent who says "you know what? i want my kid to be able to fail. i want them to be able to experience things on their own with the hope they'll be able to gain more self-confidence." >> okay. with the idea that there are predators out there. what are the prose and cons of each of those parenting styles? >> the advocates for helicopter parenting would say because you're with your child so much

it's developing a tight relationship between the two of you. that's really the main pro. the other pro, i guess, would be that if you're there, you are able to protect them from negative consequences in terms of danger. now, with regard to the free range parents, they would say you're helping your child experience self-confidence. they're gaining confidence and doing things by themselves and as a result they're going to be able to feel good about themselves and then be able to take extra steps along the way and experience confidence. >> the pros and cons. thank yo

the woman who leaked the audiotape of donald sterling's racist comments last year has a big settlement she'll have to pay. a judge ruled that v stiviano owns his wife sherley $2 million. shelley sterling said she owned all the things her husband gave to stiviano including a house and ferrari so he shouldn't have been able to give them away. right now, employees at a company in seattle are making big changes to their plans for the future. their ceo announced everyone at the company will make a minimum of $70,000. >> i can move out of my mom's house. >> with this news today we'll be

able to start a family months before we initially thought we could. >> these are life-changing changes. a huge raise for a lot of folks here. dan price is the ceo of gravity payments a credit card processing company. he said he had a problem with the growing wage gap and he cut his own salary from $1 million to $70,000 as part of the change. about 70 employees are now making more and a lot more in some cases. some even doubled their pay so apparently the average salary there at gravity payment $48,000. so that jumped to $70,000 is huge. and as you heard from employees, these are life-changing moves they can do with this pay raise. and he wanted to start a conversation about wages and the wage gap. >> i guess he had heard that they felt that money would buy them happiness. so maybe he wants to see. >> ultimately i don't think money can buy happiness but it can help with the bills. >> well this that can take a lot of pressure off people,

county maryland. we've learned he wasn't there for very long he was excused from service. that's the latest from the live desk i'm molette green. barbara? >> that's interesting. right now a history-making construction project is under way in the district. it's really cool, too. crews are moving a 1,400 ton building just 30 feet. it's part of a development project on new york avenue. the 100-year-old building will be removed from its slab and moved to a new one. this is a very slow process and it's going to take a week we understand. even that seems pretty fast for that big a building. a second building is scheduled to be moved in june. the massive undertaking is considered to be the largest building move in d.c.'s history. eun? law enforcement officials in arizona are defending the actions of an officer who used a control car to take down an armed suspect. nbc's miguel almaguer takes a closer look at the dramatic dash cam video released today. >> i'm staying back at a distance.

the meitivs believe in free range parenting. we asked dr. joshua weiner what age is okay for a child to play outside alone. so dr. weiner at what age do you think it's okay for a child to play outside alone? >> it depends on two things. number one, it depends on your child and what they're going to do. so if you live in a busy dangerous neighborhood lots of traffic, you need to have that age be higher. if you're talking about your kid going in your backyard, it can be lower. if you're forcing me to give an age, seven, eight years old, somewhere in that range. but the important point is whatever you're doing you need to sit down with your child ahead of time and make sure they know what to do if problems occur so that way the child's prepared and you can be more calm that things will go well. >> as a psychiatrist with a lot of experience with children and parenting, what do you think is the best parenting style? >> be a sensible parent. neither extreme is really good. it's not good to be a helicopter parent it's not good to be an
