ce in advance what he was going to do. he even e-mailed several news organizations, including enough. >> in a statement, the fax said it had no idea about this plan. >> reporter: a florida report here has been in contact with the pilot says that he took off from gettysburg pennsylvania. about an hour flight time from here. take a look at this video. witnesses confirm that it was coming in from the west flying about 30 feet above the national mall and the capitol reflective pool. that is restricted airing space for anyone flying below 18,000 feet. and the faa had no notification that this flight was taking place. he was coming in in a gyro copter. think helicopter but lighter, smaller, maybe no more than a few hundred pounds and there is no engine to power the rotor. there is the insignia of the u.s. postal service on the side

and some thought it was an official flight by the post office. until it plopped down about a half city block from the capital itself. the u.s. capitol police were there waiting for him as it handed. the man did not get out until ordered to do so. and law enforcement sources tell us tonight, necessary custody. they're questioning him and they will be at the point from which he launched to see if there's any more evidence to be gathered there. back to you. our team coverage continues with what we're learning about the pilot's motive. steve handelsman is working that angle. a 61-year-old doug hughes, that doesn't come from police or national security officials. it come from hughes himself. and he clearly could have been killed and not just in a crash of this mini chopper. here's some video of his arrest. lawmakers say capitol police had

at least one rifleman on the balcony set to shoot this pilot if it looked like the small chopper would strike the capitol building but it didn't. it appears this was not a terrorist attack. instead a protest. hughes who is a 61-year-old florida postal worker put up an elaborate website announcing his plans which he call civil disobedience. he said i have no violent inclinations or swenltintent. just delivering the mail. and he had 535 letters, one addressed to every member of congress. to galvanize millions of people to change the government. that was his dream. he said i don't believe that the authorities are going to shoot down a 60-year-old mailman in a flying bicycle but i would rather die in the flight than live to be 80 years old and see

this country fall. hughes charges that our electoral process is corrupt. he says there's too much money involved. and now he will be investigated seems certain to be prosecuted on a long list of apparent violations. perhaps more significantly, national security officials have got to be scrambling right now to figure out how this aircraft that's what it is. albeit a small one. it could have carried chemicals. how in the world this craft got from pennsylvania here through infamous well known no-fly zone without being detected and made it all the way here to capitol hill. steve handlesman news4. we have a developing story. rails service on one end of the metro line is shut down after the pedestrian bridge just collapsed between the college park and green belt stations.

let's go now to shomari stone who has been live on the scene all afternoon. >> reporter: first i have new information for you. the spokesperson tells me that the green line service between college park and green belt will be suspended overnight and tomorrow morning so you have to plan accordingly. this will affect thousands of people. let me move out of the way. you can see now, crews are beginning to assess what's going on. and they will have to move that concrete you see over there. approximately 30 to 40 feet in length. move it off the tracks. let's take look from chopper 4 from above. the equipment operator was using the crane to scoop up ballast or rocks from the container and dumping it between the tracks. he was working on the test tracks and are to some reason he hit the pedestrian bridge. causing it to lapse.

add a half inch steel spike at the tot of the bench. there are latest fallout from a it frommening gate jumping months ago when a man made it over the fence, across the white house lawn and boo the east room before he was stopped. the national park service documents obtained by the i-team say they want a half inch steel spikes atop the fence. it would be added to fencing all traunld white house complex and they would be in close proximity to make it more difficult to climb. the commission of fine arts one of the two that must aprof it is expected to do so tomorrow in a meeting at the national building museum. the other one is expected to do so in early may. he said this is long needed. is it too easy?

attorneys for aaron hernandez are expected to appeal the life sentence. the jurors who convicted hernandez are talking about that decision. >> reporter: he was once one of the brightest stars. now the former new england patriots tight end aaron hernandez is a convicted murderer. the jury's decision came on the seventh day of deliberations after a nine-week trial on the testimony of more than 130

groups to educate young girls in civics. chief justice john roberts got a different honor. he was called for jury duty. he showed up at the montgomery county courthouse in rock ville this morning. he was a potential juror in a civil case involving a car crash. he answered a few questions and then stop the presses, he was not chosen for the jury. we've heard about the aircraft. but some drones are being used to pre serve crime scenes before they're contaminated. >> reporter: dozens captured the scene on cell phones. a flying drone that can tikriti 3d 360-degree images of crime scenes before anyone can contaminate them.

a short time ago we learned that the green line metro service will remain suspended through tomorrow morning. this all come after a construction crew accidentally hit and knocked down a pedestrian bridge that runs over the tracks near berwyn road between those two stations. no one was hurt. right now crews are working to get the 30 to 40 feet of concrete off those tracks. and shuttle buses are running between the stations. all rail service currently suspended there and expected to remain suspended through morning commute. we'll push any changes through to you with our nbc washington app. and stay tuned to news4 today to get updates. thanks.

still developing. charges against a florida mailman who handed a gyrocopter on the west lawn of the u.s. capitol. doug hughes publicized the flight on his website. calling it a protest for campaign finance reform. we've learned that he took off from gettysburg and made it into the no-fly zone undetected without the approval or knowledge. nbc news has learned the secret service interviewed hughes about his plans last year and there will be a full report on "nbc nightly news" at the top of the hour. news4 and several other media outlets received an e-mail from hughes early this afternoon. he said, quote, the issue is important enough to defy no-fly zone and risk life and limb and my freedom in pursuit of an honest government that represents the people. now, to bullets flying through the walls of a fairfax county home. missing a woman by just a few feet. >> police say those shots came from her neighbor's basement.

live in oakton with what police seized from that neighbor's house. it shows what the officers got out of this house. it includes a handgun, a rifle, several magazines and shell casing sthat belong to bullets that were fired right into miss sally thomas' house. >> every time i open and close the door you know you can see that it still there. >> reporter: sally thomas left to clean up a week's old mess. inning there is a bullet hole. here's a bullet hole. and here's this one right here. >> reporter: piercing her deck's screen. then shootering the glass doors and ultimately hitting the wall past the kitchen. we found one, two, three bullet holes. >> i'm still just speechless. >> reporter: miss thomas had just woken up. walk out of the bedroom and

right before she stepped into the bedroom, more gunshots. >> i was walking this way. when i got to just about here i heard the terrible noise. >> reporter: the shots missed her only by a few feet. >> so i called 911 and said somebody is shooting at my house. >> reporter: police didn't have to go far to track down the source. as officers investigated they saw several men walking out of the house behind miss thomas's. they asked her if she was having trouble with her neighbor. and i said no. he is a really nice guy. and he said police said that's where it is coming from. >> reporter: these three men now arrested and charged with firing guns. police say it came from the home's basement. she now has an unwanted keep sake in her hand and holding tight to her dog, she said her army grandson has a gift for her. >> and he is going on give me a combat ribbon. which i think i deserve. i don't know what we're going to do for tilly.

>> the three men who were allegedly shooting from inside this house have been charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling and reckless handling of a fire article. one is always convicted felon so he faces an additional charge. >> i'm glad she's okay. thank you. a 150-year sentence was handed down for a convicted rapist who preyed on men he met at beer pong tournaments. joey poindexter was sentenced for assaulting five men over the past decade. prosecutors believe there may be as many as 20 more victims based on video and photo of the attacks that poindexter recorded. they call it fight for 15. minimum wage workers rallied outside the wilson building in d.c. they're demanding that the minimum wage be raised to $15 an hour. they say many low wage workers have to rely on public assistance to buy food. >> a lot of these workers don't pay taxes.

an arizona police chief said if they had not stopped the man, someone else could have gotten hurt. video from two different cruisers show an arm man walking down the street and firing a weapon into the air. the cruiser slams into him going 40 miles an hour. police say the man had just committed a series of cri tucson that included stealing a rifle from the local walmart.

here's the other view. the officer who hit him was cleared of any wrongdoing and this happened in february but this video was just released. in prince george's county work is moving forward on a massive project to preserve holocaust-related artifacts. a ground breaking in bowie today. 80,000 square feet this building will be. and it will have climate controlled rooms. the holocaust museum says when survivors are no longer able to tell their stories, there are concerns that a popular golf course could be turned into new homes. some sometime ago they asked the fairfax zoning administrator if the property was zoned in a way that could be developed after some back and forth. the board of zoning reached a conclusion that could make it easier to redevelop.

the playing. taps and a wreath laying outside the peterson house on tenth street in northwest d.c. this morning. it marked the exact moment 150 years ago, 7:22 a.m. when president lincoln passed away after he was shot while watching a play across the street at ford's theater. while lincoln lay dying gunman john wilkes booth was make hegs escape. the massive manhunt lasted 12 days. he made stops along the way to ask for help. chris lawrence takes us on that route. >> reporter: the president is dying but his killer won't be caught so easily. john wilkes booth meets up with

were banged up you know they'll go come playoff time. >> one of those things it is do or die. it is the playoffs. everyone wants a play. obviously you want to feel your best. and i feel really good. >> i think our team is well prepared for a playoff run as we can be. a lot of things along the way. i think the biggest thing is keep the foot on the gas. i think we've had a couple series. teams have been able to come back on us. so it is something to prevent. >> the caps head coach has more post season experience than any capitals head coach in franchise history. it is on his resume that has alex ovechkin buying in and believing his coaching style. trotz has an attention to detail and emphasizes team unit while playing a physical game perfectly fit to the that playoffs. they say all they have to do is put their trust in trotz and they could have the experience of a lifetime.
