plus metro station closed. the bridge collapse that could cause a lot of headaches on your way to work in the morning. and the search for possible victims after a local police officer is accused of having child pornography. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> first at 11:00, a security scare at the center of washington, d.c. a gyrocopter flew into highly restricted airspace and landed right outside the u.s. capitol. >> tonight we're learning more about that pilot. why his landing wasn't exactly a surprise and new details now about his 100-mile journey from gettysburg pennsylvania to the nation's capitol. >> the pilot is a florida mail carrier. he flew here to deliver a message about campaign finance reform. >> news4'she capitol with more on this frightening day. chris? >> reporter: jim, doreen we learned that doug hughes was so passionate about this issue and so public about this plan that he had, secret service agents

came to his house in florida and interviewed him extensively a year and a half ago. it's still a shocking sight. a man flying low over the national mall, headed straight for the u.s. capitol. >> this is not video shows doug hughes had been hatching this plot since 2013. >> i have carefully planned it so that nobody >> reporter: he practiced flying the gyrocopter. >> i'm not suicidal. and i'm not going to commit suicide. and i'm not going to fly into any monuments. >> reporter: and he understood the risks. >> no sane person would do what i'm doing. >> reporter: but hughes trusted the same federal government he was protesting would save him. >> i don't believe that the authorities are going to shoot down a 60-year-old mailman in a flying bicycle. >> reporter: on friday hughes loaded it on to a trailer in florida and started towing it to pennsylvania the next day. the minute he hit the front lawn of the capitol, police were

waiting. >> move back this way! >> reporter: streets blocked off, the building locked down, and hughes handcuffed. [ siren ] earlier tonight police and federal agents surrounded the airport in gettysburg, confiscating the truck he used to get his aircraft within an hour's flight of the capitol. so again, what we have learned tonight basically is that hughes is locked up here in d.c. and that even though the secret service agents knew of him and of his plan as far back as a year and a half ago, they say they were not alerted that he was on his way here and on his way right here behind me to the u.s. capitol. reporting live on capitol hill chris lawrence news4. back to you. developing tonight, fairfax county police looking for potential victims after arresting their own public information officer on charges of child pornography. officer bud walker is charged tonight with possessing and the

intent to distribute child porn. walker has been a spokesman for fairfax county police for the last six years. investigators were led to walker by a tip from a blogging site. according to police that cite said child porn had been uploaded to its servers from a home in fairfax county. officers determined that home was owned by walker. >> this matter is disappointing to all of us including all of the members of the fairfax county police department who put their lives on the line each and every shift. >> now walker was also a school resource officer at south county high school from 2006 to '09. he is being held tonight without bond. and now emergency work is under way after a pedestrian bridge collapsed right on to some metro tracks. the repairs mean the greenbelt metro station will be closed during tomorrow morning's commute. shomari stone is live in berwyn heights with details. shomari? >> reporter: i must say this has been a mess all evening long.

metro crews are behind me and they are taking the steps to remove this concrete and do their best to fix this situation. let me move right out the way. you can see crews right over there. and what they're doing is lifting up that concrete that is on the tracks. keep in mind the track is also damaged. and right now they're going to have to do what they can to fix it. many riders tell me they're not looking forward to tomorrow morning's commute. sparks fly after a metro mess in berwyn heights, maryland as crews cut through a fence. it was attached to a pedestrian bridge. that's until the bridge collapsed on the tracks below. >> it was a big loud boom. >> reporter: elijah heard the rail crane crash into the bridge around 3:00 this evening. >> i was like wow, that's kind of crazy. >> reporter: the 40 to 50-foot-long concrete collapsed on the green line tracks. the operator works for scanska, a metro contractor. he was working on the new 7,000 series metro test track, lifting rocks out of this container and

dumping them in between the tracks. why did he hit this pedestrian bridge? he had one job? >> we don't have the answer to this yet. the representatives from the contract canner scanska are here. >> reporter: what do you think happened? any idea? have you seen this before? >> i've never seen this before. but we're still try tog figure out exactly what happened. >> free shu greenbelt. >> reporter: free shuttle buses to the greenbelt station on the green line. service is suspended. your commute should take an extra 30 minutes. >> well it's frustrating. >> reporter: while crews work to remove the concrete they're relieved no one was hurt. green line is suspended between college park and greenbelt. and it's important to figure out will this still be a problem tomorrow around afternoon time or even tomorrow morning's evening commute? well that's why the spokesperson for metro is going to give us an update tomorrow morning. live here i'm shomari stone, back to you in the studio. >> thanks. just in a deadly shooting.

police found a man with multiple gunshot wounds near central avenue. he was pronounced dead on the scene. police tell us this doesn't appear to be a random act of violence. right now detectives are trying to identify the suspects. new security changes coming to the white house. the plans are expected to get under way tomorrow. news4 i-team scott macfarlane broke the story on twitter. this is in response to a frightening incident where a man made it over the fence and into the white house before he was stopped. plans call for half-inch steel spikes to be added to the top of the fence. the commission of fine arts has to sign off on the changes. that's expected to happen tomorrow. a former secret service agent says extra line of defense is crucial. >> the defense is clearly inadequate. it's too easy. we had a 40-year-old iraq war veteran with bad legs bad knees make it over and make it into the east room. if that's not a wake-up call. >> a national capital planning

anthrax investigation is accusing the agency now of concealing evidence on who was really responsible. army scientist bruce ivins killed himself in 2008 as prosecutors prepared to charge him with murder. anthrax-filled letters killed five people and made 17 others sick in 2001. richard lampert has filed a civil lawsuit saying the fbi is hiding evidence that casts doubt on whether ivins sent the letters. the fbi says it does not comment on pending litigation. a man convicted of preying on other men he met at beer pong tournaments will live out his life in jail. joey poindexter was sentenced to 150 years in prison today. e men over the past decade. but prosecutors believe there may be as many as 20 other victims. based on video and photos poindexter recorded of the attacks. tonight a montgomery county teenager is apologizing after

admitting he spray painted a swastika on a synagogue. sebastian espinoza-carranza was one of several masked people caught on camera here painting "hitler" and "kkk" on the building last week. he says he is not racist and this was just a stupid joke. members of the shaare torah in gaithersburg were disturbed by this vandalism. the rabbi there says he plans to speak with the 18-year-old at some point. >> i want to really apologize to the jewish community and to everybody. because even my friends are probably disappointed from what i've done. >> carranza is charged with property damage to a religious institution. he is already under investigation for how he spent campaign funds. now a former illinois congressman is facing a lawsuit from a former supporter. chicago lawyer howard foster is suing aaron schock to force him to repay millions in campaign contributions. foster only donated $500 but says thousands of others donated

d.c. police are considering using drones to preserve crime scenes before they're contaminated. law enforcement officials from across the country visited d.c.'s forensic science office in southwest today. the group watched a drone that can create 3-d, 360-degree images. this device costs about $65,000. the drone could also be used by security officers to map out routes like inaugural parades and public gatherings looking for security weak spots. a former teacher's aide from virginia is in trouble tonight, accused of hitting special needs

students on the school bus. peggy jordan is charged now with two counts of assault and battery. she worked for colonial heights public schools, which is near petersburg. one mother who didn't want her face on camera said the teachers aide struck her 7-year-old son who is severely autistic. >> to strike a child who does not have the ability to communicate should never be the reaction. >> jordan no longer works for the school system, and the district tells us it's now reviewing its policy. you might be able to buy a beer at a maryland football game this fall. the university is considering selling alcohol at athletic events starting with the fall sports season. the idea stemmed from a student proposal. there would be limits. only a certain number of drinks could be purchased at one time. and sales would be stopped before the end of the game. the proposal has to be approved by the president first.

some of you are ready for a day off tomorrow in honor of emancipation day in the district. it celebrates the day slavery bake illegal in d.c. it's a city government holiday. that means some bars will remain open until 4:00 tomorrow morning since this is a recognized holiday. and tomorrow thousands of people will celebrate with a parade down pennsylvania avenue. the emancipation day parade kicks off at freedom plaza at 11:00 a.m. the festivities continue with a concert from 4:30 to 8:30 in the evening. a fireworks display will cap off the events at 8:45. so the night is young right now. >> with all that going on tomorrow is the weather going to cooperate? >> yeah, i think so. we're looking at a dry day. we're going to see a lot of cloud cover. but just like today. if you enjoy today, temperatures around the average for this time of year 67 68. some cloud cover. i think we'll get that tomorrow. with the clouds i think the fireworks display could be that much better. kind of cool. take a look out there right now. also kind of cool. we are still lit up down there

in pink as we continue across our region. take a look at the numbers across our area. actually it's purple for autism. 60 degrees. the winds are calm. we have mostly cloudy skies. and we continue to see those clouds streaming on in across our region. 52 degrees in leesburg. already down to 48 in frederick. 48 down towards pawtuxet river. a rather cool night tonight. it's going to stay on the cool side through tomorrow morning. no rain no thunderstorms, no snow around the region. i think we can say goodbye for good to the snow. the thunderstorms, though they're next. but not too close. satellite radar showing the rain down to the south. and watch what happened here earlier today. we had rain moving towards our area. and start to shift back to the south. that's because of an area of high pressure off to the north, driving in some dryer air. and that really helped to shut that moisture down to the south. area of low pressure though remains down here. so we will continue to watch that moisture being pumped in. that's why i think we'll see cloud cover tomorrow. future weather, depicts cloud cover across the region as i

mentioned. that's 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. here is 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. and we still have the clouds. but we're dry. and i think we'll stay dry through the overnight period. we will see a few showers overnight tonight, in towards friday. notice friday morning, we're dry for the most part. but then we see a chance of showers developing during the afternoon. if we get some sunshine on friday one, we could really warm up. two, we could see some of these showers become a little bit stronger. look around 6:00 7:00. the showers entering the region. you may need the umbrella on friday. not anticipating a lot of rain. and if you do see a shower it's going to be a quick mover. tomorrow impact travel looking good exercise great all day. good for that if you're heading to the festivities downtown. everybody on the green sigh. high temperatures tomorrow 66 in gaithersburg. 70 in fredericksburg. 67 up towards frederick. a nice mild afternoon. i think we'll see a little more sun than we saw out there on our wednesday. on friday mostly cloudy a 40% chance of showers. we've got a high of 73 during the day on friday. saturday is the day, a great
