washington app. now over to melissa mollet. back to you, eun. >> thank you, molette green from the live desk. breaking news right now. the greenbelt metro station is back open and service is fully restored on the green light. metro made that announcement a few moments ago. a pedestrian bridge collapsed on top of the train tracks between the greenbelt and college park metro stations. news4's megan mcgrath is live at the greenbelt station with the quick work. this is good news for the commuters. >> reporter: yeah. absolutely good news for commuters. they worked overnight, they got that debris off the tracks and they were able to just recently -- just in the last half hour less than that reopen the greenbelt station. if you take a look behind me here, you can see people are starting to file in. we also still have the normal bus activity here as well. but for the first time really this morning people who arrive here at the station are actually able to go in and hop on a train. we encountered a lot of people when the station was closed

earlier this morning that didn't realize that there was a problem. they showed up only to be turned away or directed to the shuttle bus. the good news here is that is no longer the case. we have now gone back to normal operations on the green line. the greenbelt station has reopened. and apparently we're not even seeing any delays through the area so good news for metro riders. back to you all. >> megan mcgrath in greenbelt, thank you. you have a new metro problem to talk about this morning. as megan just said we have the greenbelt station now open. that green line service fully restored just hearing in my ear though we have an orange line problem now. delays both directions because of a problem earlier at west falls church. a warning there. now, molette green was showing us that brushfire, that's the inner loop again, just after b.w. parkway. chopper 4 over that scene for us. we have the fire apparatus in the right lanes slowing things a

tad. prince george's county looking good there. 28 just south of 66 though we don't have any issues there. looking good. then 270 into and out of town, northbound and southbound no problems. back at 6:11 with travel times. >> thanks. fairfax county police's former public information officer will make his first court appearance. pfc william bud walker is charged with possessing and the intent to distribute child porn. investigators were led to walker by a tip from an online blog. according to police they traced uploads on the website to walker's home in fairfax county. fairfax county police say there could be potential victims since he was a school resource officer at south county high school from 2006 to 2009. today virginia will observe a moment of silence. it will take place at 9:43 a.m. to mark eight years since the deadly shootings at virginia tech. there will be tributes and exhibits. the events will include a 3.2

mile run to honor each life lost. 32 people died in the shootings. new security changes at the white house could be approved today. the news4 i-team scott macfarlane broke this story on twitter. it calls for steel spikes to be added to the top of the fence outside of the white house. the changes are in response to that frightening incident where a man made it over the fence and through the front door before he was stopped. the commission of fine arts has to sign off on the changes today. >> and that fence is clearly inadequate. it's too easy. we had a 40-year-old iraq war veteran with bad legs bad knees make it over and make it into the east room. if that's not a wake-up call -- >> the national capital planning commission is expected to approve the plan next month. you may have the day off work today as the district is celebrating emancipation day. today is the day that slavery shington, d.c. there's a parade down pennsylvania avenue and it kicks off at 11:00 this morning.

site near james madison's former home in virginia. it will reconstruct the slave community near his home. it will be used to teach what life was like on a plantation. members of the smithsonian and a descendant of one of president madison's slaves will speak at a ground breaking ceremony this saturday. starting today you get to share stories about your faith rit park. it's part of a new find your park campaign to connect with more than 400 national parks across the country. the park service hopes it encourages public support and raises funds for maintenance needs need. . some of the best parks are here in our area, but you can't compete with california. they very nice. >> i have to say is a shout-out to all the beautiful green space in our backyard. let's check in with storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein to find out if it's a day to spend outside in the parks. good morning.

a lot of tourists and locals alike are still scratching their heads after the gyrocopter swooped down over the mall and crashed on the capital. you can see doug hughes piloting that gyrocopter. he will be in court this morning. meanwhile, multiple security agencies will be looking at how he was able to pull this off. especially because the secret service may have known that something was coming. derrick ward has more on the new security concerns that have come about. derrick, good morning to you >> reporter: good morning. there's some security concerns. when hughes appears in court

later today he'll be charged under title 49 of the united states code, that deals with transportation issues. as you can say, this is indeed one. look at the video from yesterday. it was about 1:30 when hughes made the last leg of his trip from gettysburg pennsylvania -- he actually started in florida. he drove his gyrocopter up from florida to gettysburg pennsylvania. flew about 45 miles per hour at treetop level all the way here to the west front of the capitol. now, the secret service had interviewed hughes in florida at least twice after he went public with information indicating that he intended to do something like this. he was meticulous about it. he was aware of the security here and of the no fly zone apparently. he said he chose this gyrocopter as opposed to a fixed wing a more airplane like piece of aircraft because that might have posed more of a threat. but of course any time you're flying inside the beltway and over the federal enclave, you need some special clearances.

we may learn more about this later today in court. derrick ward, news4. and we're learning more about doug hughes his past and his motivations. we'll have more on that at 6:45. molette green at the live desk with new video just in from the university of missouri campus where police shot and killed an armed robbery suspect overnight. take a look now. police say all of this started with an armed robbery. the suspect then hid in a woman's car until she returned to find 51-year-old mark adare inside with a gun. but she was still able to get away from him. officers caught up with him at one of mizzou's garages where they say he fought with them before being shot. right now an alert page on the school's website, there it is shows the campus is back operating normally this morning. one of the officers was injured in the scuffle with the suspect. he's expected to be okay.

molette green. back to you. a lawsuit claims that the fbi covered up evidence about the anthrax attacks that killed five people in 2001. richard lambert was one of the people in charge of the investigation and he said the agency held back evidence that questioned whether bruce ivins was actually responsible for what happened. ivins killed himself seven years ago and the fbi says it doesn't comment on pending litigation. new this morning, malaysia's government ready to take another big step to find that missing plane. at a news conference a few hours ago, malaysia announced the search area for flight 370 in the southern indian ocean will be doubled if they can't find the jetliner by the end of may. they believe they're in the right area and they have the best equipment to find it in the very deep and dark ocean. the plane with 239 people on board dropped off radar last year. 6:19 now. you may be seeing some drones flying around to help police. law enforcement officials visited the d.c. forensic

science office yesterday. police are considering using drones to preserve crime scenes. the group watched the drone that can create 3-d 360 degree images. but it comes a at a price with the device it costs about $365,000. >> if you screw up the scene, then anything that comes after that might be compromised. >> the drone could also be used to map out routes like inaugural parades and public gatherings and find the weak spots in security. new endorsements for maryland's donna edwards. seven of the nine members of the prince george's county council say they support her as she runs for barbara mikulski's seat. edwards represents parts of prince george's and anne arundel counties. she and representative chris van holland are both vying for the democratic nomination. a judge is refusing to stop a virginia woman's college from closing the doors.

sweet briar announced it was closing last month. yesterday, a judge refused to stand in the way but he did issue an injunction. it forbids the college from spending charitable contributions on the closure for 60 days an appeal is expected by opponents. you may soon be able to buy a beer at the university of maryland during sporting events. the university is considering allowing alcohol during football season. the idea stemmed from the student proposal. under the plan only a certain number of drinks could be purchased at a time and sales would stop before the end of the football or the basketball game. the university preside has the final say on whether or not to allow the plan. if you're planning to go to nats games tonight, it's black heritage day. a portion of the tickets will be donated to the greater washington urban league. the team will also honor the jackie robinson foundation before the game and at their game in boston yesterday you can see the nats and the red sox wore number 42 to honor jackie robinson. he was the first black player to play in the major leagues.

now the grass and weed pollen is low. but you may be noticing some allergy sufferers will be noticing it today as it comes back. near 50 degrees by 8:00 a.m. partly sunny by midday in the low to mid 60s. then upper 60s with a cloudy sky and the clouds close in. it will stay cloudy through this evening. then the first rain drops arriving north of washington by around midnight to 1:00 a.m. this area in green. then some other showers coming in from the west. getting closer to the metro area by 5:00 a.m. a few sprinkles around. then after that, between 9:00, 10:00 a.m. through noontime, a few passing rain showers and then drifting off to the east. a little bit of sun back with highs reaching the mid 70s. so a nice afternoon. just a small chance of an additional sprinkle on friday afternoon. saturday looking like a fabulous day for outdoor recreation or yard work. a lot of people will be pulling weeds i know i will be. near 80 on saturday afternoon.

going on, but we don't see an accident. a lot of volume through german towne. 95 looking good. prince george's county everybody is behaving themselves as well. we are hearing about a new crash in charles county. we'll try to get chopper over that and give you information in a few minutes. we are learning about new plans for expansions at reagan national airport and especially those of you who hop on quick commuter flights. the more than $1 billion plan adds an entire new concourse at the north end of the airport. there are 14 new gates for commuter planes so passengers don't have to board outside in the rain. the expansion comes as the airport is getting very busy. >> it is record growth that wasn't foreseen. even just a decade ago. >> security check points will also be moved to make more space. this could all happen within five years. some of you are already tweeting us to celebrate. head on over to our website. we have posted the plans there.

breaking news. a house fire now chopper 4 over the scene there in the 6100 block of princes garden parkway. not too far from lannan 7 road. heavy smoke and fire was coming from the roof of this single family home. we're working to get more information on this. we'll bring it to you on air and in our nbc washington app. i'm molette green at the live desk. it's now 6:31. breaking news right now. the greenbelt metro station is back open. chopper 4 caught some of the first trains leaving the station less than an hour ago. >> a pedestrian bridge collapsed on top of the tracks yesterday between the greenbelt and college metro station. news4's megan mcgrath with the

good news this morning. this is good news. >> reporter: yeah it is good news. it was a rocky start for a lot of people who didn't realize that the greenbelt station was closed. they came here they were turned around. others jumped on the shuttle buses but the latest development which is very positive is that the greenbelt station is now back open. that happened within the last 40 minutes or so. we have normal operations at this point on the green line. now the problem was a pedestrian bridge that collapsed in berwyn heights. take a look at the video here. that happened yesterday. apparently it was hit by the boom of a crane and it just brought it crashing down on top of tracks that were used by both metro and m.a.r.c. train. they had to spend the entire night cleaning that debris off the tracks. they weren't able to do it in time for the start of the rush hour. so we did have a closure here for a while. as metro initially opened but they have now finished that clean-up work. we have seen trains going through the station here and things are back to normal. and with more on traffic, we'll

supreme court case expected to resolve whether the bans are legal. oral arguments in the case are scheduled at the end of this month. virginia lawmakers will meet tomorrow to rework an ethics bill that limits gifts they can receive from lobbyists. they say the bill as it is written now could mean a $100 lifetime limit for gifts. governor mcauliffe is calling for a $100 per year limit. a man is dead after a shooting in prince george's county. the man was found shot several times last night in seat pleasant. prince george's county police say this wasn't a random shooting. and they're trying to identify the suspects. today, two u.s. army reserve officers are facing charges accused of selling ammunition and military issued assault rifles to undercover agents posing as members of a mexican drug cartel. the officers were assigned to the la mesa armory in california. happening today, the deaf

homeless man who was held in a local jail for six weeks without an interpreter is headed to court today. abreham zemedagegehu is suing the arlington county sheriff's and he was accused of stealing an ipad at the reagan national airport. the ipad was later found by the owner. for two days he didn't know why he had been arrested. he says he repeatedly wrote the word interpreter, because was denied one. the sheriff's office has asked for the case to be thrown out. 6:35 on this thursday morning. coming up, a story you're still talking about. a small helicopter buzzes the national mall. what we learn about the man who was behind the stunt and why it should not have been a surprise for the police. and dealing with a recent traffic ticket? why you don't have to worry about the impact on your insurance rates. you might be brave enough to leave that jacket at home today as we see temperatures in mid 50s. tom has your what to wear forecast at 6:41.

welcome back. a new study looks at who is being ticketed the. drum roll, please. thank you, adam. drivers between the ages of 30 and 49 that's us are ticketed the most in the country, but insurance rates are not going unlike you think. only 19% of ticketed drivers started paying more for car insurance. younger drivers were found to be more likely to see their rate increase after a violation. safety improvements are coming to the way you get to work in the next few months. metro will begin repairing ventilation fans and adding emergency exit signs. now, within the next year metro says it will upgrade the radio and cell phone systems inside

better look at who hughes is and how long he may have been planning this stunt. nbc's peter alexander is live on capitol hill now with more on doug hughes. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this gives new meaning to the term airmail. that ultralight plane flew down from mall to the washington monument directly toward the capitol. the head of the house home land committee said had it gotten closer police with long guns would have taken it down. this is a 61-year-old post man from florida. doug hughes is his name. his intention was to deliver a message to washington about big money in politics and government corruption. instead he's sparked a whole new conversation about the state of homeland security in this country. coming up a little bit later on the "today" show we'll talk to two men. one a journalist and another a close friend of hughes. both of whom were aware of this stunt. what turned into the unprecedented stunt before it happened. we'll hear from some law enforcement experts about some of the questions now being

270 southbound through germantown, quite slow. no reason, just a lot of volume. more breaking news. the greenbelt metro station is back open. chopper 4 caught the trains leaving for the first time since the pedestrian collapse. it came down yesterday and megan mcgrath is live at the greenbelt station with this good news for commuters. hey megan. >> reporter: well certainly an improvement in the morning for many people. the greenbelt station has reopened. things on the green line back to normal here. if you look behind me folks are just walking right on into the station. that was not the case this morning. in fact many people hadn't gotten the word overnight that the station was closed. we saw a lot of people who were walking in to be turned around and sent over to shuttle buses. this is that happened. this was the problem this morning. a pedestrian bridge in berwyn heights that goes across the tracks it collapsed when it was hit by the boom of a crane. they worked overnight to remove
