this morn ging. yesterday a crane hit the bridge causing it to collapse. it came down on the top of the tracks between the green belt and college park stations. mark service was also suspended but has been restored now. crews worked throughout the night to get everything open ahead of schedule. the man who admitted to flying that gyrocopter over the national mall on to the capitol grounds will be in a d.c. courtroom in just a few hours. doug hughes is scheduled to make his appearance at 1:30 this afternoon. he's facing charges for flying into restricted airspace. that's sparking more questions about security in our area. senator ron johnson chairs the homeland security committee. he's issued this statement just a little while ago. he says "i am deeply concerned that someone has the ability to fly for over an hour through the most restricted airspace in our country and land on the lawn of the capitol. i'm investigating this incident and requesting a full accounting by all federal organizations

today virginia marked eight years since the fatal shooting of virginia tech. the events will include a 3.2 mile run to honor each life lost. 32 people died in thes. it turns out traffic doesn't just cost you time and frustration. if you want to avoid it sometimes it costs you cash as well. julie carey told me about this situation in the first four traffic center this morning via twitter and then an e-mail. look at the toll on the beltway express lanes. julie tweeted she paid $13.40. we kept an eye on the toll after, that it went up past $14 to get from the springfield interchange to maryland during rush hour. the express lane tolls rise as volume increases to keep the lanes as traffic free as possible. you can always tweet me at first 4 traffic to let your friends and neighbors know about any issues as long as you do it

steiner shows a disabled restroom stall converted into a designated space for nursing mothers. she called it appalling and says mothers should be able to nurse anywhere in the airport the sign has been removed an an airport spokesman says they are looking for a better option. in news for your health, a new study suggests poor kids have smaller brains. you may have noticed the article in the "washington post." scientists at columbia university discovered the surface area of the cerebral cortex located in the front part of your brain is lunged edlinked to family income. children and families earning less than $25,000 has surface areas 6% smaller than those in kids from families who earned significantly more. that area of the brain handles language memory and reasoning skills and while researchers don't have a reason for the disparity yet, they suggest two possibilities, someone that poor families lack access to good nutrition and adequate health care the other is that the stress poor families experience

in less than two hours, the man who breached capitol security with a small aircraft will appear in court for the first time. this as a powerful senator is calling on security agencies to explain to congress how he got there. derek ward is live at the capitol with the breach and the fallout. good morning, derek. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. the pilot is being charged under title 49 of the u.s. code that deals with transportation issues on the ground and space and it's about him flying all the way here literally under the radar through the most secure airspace in the country just to make a point. his landing on the west lawn of the capitol landed him in jail 61-year-old postal worker doug hughes had a message for congress essentially calling out corruption and calling if what he termed a voters' rebellion. it was contained in a letter for each member via airmail brought

in via a route that he knew would get him into trouble. >> i'm going to violate the no-fly zone non-violently and for nobody to get hurt. >> reporter: sound and images from online posting hughes made before launching what was apparently no secret. his talk of the plan over the past couple years earned him two visits from the secret service. hughes says he didn't want to hurt anyone and he didn't believe he would be hurt despite the security breach of local restricted airspace. >> i don't believe that the authorities are going to shoot down a 60-year-old mailman in a flying bike. >> he apparently chose the gyrocopter over a fixed wing ultra light because he thought it would seem like less of a threat. still, questions remain how any aircraft was able to fly from gettysburg pennsylvania to the heart of federal washington and not be confronted. until it was on the ground. he said that if we end up paying more attention to him than his message than we are missing the point and yes we have talked about campaign reform a little

more than usual without there being any movement up here on the hill but whether that talk can survive the din of concern over the security breach remains to be seen. derrick ward news 4. >> thanks derrick. always activity on capitol hill. if you're tired of how cramped seating is on airplanes, some groups are saying it could impact your family's safety in an emergency. flight attendants are saying space could violate federal rules. nbc's richard jordon breaks down the concerns. >> reporter: adam we've all been there in those tight airplane seats and the leg room is what's causing controversy now for security reasons. back in 1967 the faa required that airplane manufacturers prove that all the passengers on board a plane could safely evacuate in case of an emergency in just 90 seconds with half of the exits blocked. now the night attendants' association suspect sure that's possible anymore, partly because of legplanes. it used to be about 31 inches now on some planes it's down to

quote sources that say training records for falsified for a reserve deputy who shot and killed a suspect. >> on your stomach, now. >> reporter: this incident was captured on camera. according to the tulsa county sheriff's office, a reserve deputy robert bates, shot and killed eric harris when he grabbed his gun instead of his taser by mistake. today's report in the "tulsa world" says supervisors at the sheriff's office were actually ordered to falsify bates' training records giving him credit for field training that he never actually had with firearms certifications as well. bait is charged with manslaughter. fairfax county police's former public information made his first court appearance today on charges that he collected child pornography. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey was tweeting from inside the courtroom during his appearance. pfc william "bud" walker is charged with possessing and the intent to distribute child pornography. investigators were led to walker by a tip from an online blog.

according to police they traced uploads on the web site to walker's home in fairfax county. his bond hearing will be tomorrow. today members of congress and holocaust survivors are meeting in the u.s. capitol building to rep the holocaust. it's holocaust remembrance day today. six million jews were killed by the nazi. the memorial observed on a slightly different day each year that corresponds to the warsaw ghetto uprising on the hebrew calendar. we're learning the measles outbreak in california is almost over. health officials say the outbreak which started at disneyland will be considered over if no cases pop up in the next day. the outbreak started in december and spread to several other states. 131 people were infected in california alone. quintuplets born to a texas family will stay in the intensive care unit for several more weeks. the girled named olivia ava, hazel, parker and riley were born at 28 weeks. their mother says they are all doing well. she finally got to hold two of

popular snack bars marketed as being healthy. that may not be the case. we have what the debate is about and the word "healthy." >> reporter: it's an immensely popular energy bar called "kind" and the snacks are described as healthy and tasty. but the fda says a few kinds of kind bars are not healthy enough. in a warning letter to the company, the fda writes that these bars must have one gram or less of saturated fat in order to even put the word "healthy" on the label. the fda says four flavors of kind bars have levels that are too high between 2.5 and five grams of saturated fat. >> it's kind of shocking to me that it has so much saturated fat. >> reporter: what else has around three grams of saturated fat? one fast food hamburger, or a 'twixt bar, two eggs. but kind says its bars are different because nuts are causing the higher fat levels adding "there is an overwhelming body of scientific evidence

today russian president vladimir putin defended his decision to approve the delivery of long-range defense missiles to iran. putin spoke about the delivery during a nationally televised call in show. earlier this month, putin lifted the 2010 sanction that banned the delivery of s-300 air missiles to iran. the ban was lifted after a nuclear deal was reached with secretary of state john kerry's help. putin said iran should be rewarded for showing a great degree of flexibility and the missiles shouldn't pose he says any threat to israel. new this morning malszaysia's goth is planning to expand the search area to find missing plane mh-370. the search team will be doubled if they can't find the plane by the end of may.
