money to run his popular business and the graffiti artists facing federal charges for tagging metro cars. first at 11:00, a college community rocked by the murder of a well-known student, and tonight we've learned the suspect is her own roommate. steven vander briel is charged with the first-degree murder of grace mann. now both go to the university of mary washington in fredericksburg virginia. that's where shomari stone is live tonight. what are you hearing. >> reporter: good evening, chris. students and faculty here at the university of mary washington is grieving. it's a very somber mood out here. people remember grace mann as a great student, someone the type of person you would like to hang out with because she was just so uplifting. tonight she's gone and her roommate the suspected killer is behind bars.

friends remember grace mann as an intelligent 20-year-old who uplifted the student body at university of mary washington. tonight police say they arrested her roommate steven briel, for allegedly killing her inside the house they rented with two other roommates. >> it's definitely scary, and the fact that we didn't hear anything no altercation, nothing, definitely the scary part. >> reporter: heidi lives across the street. >> they were good all go to school and all roommates. >> reporter: around 3:00 this evening two of the other roommates came home and found her unconscious. police tell me they called 911, tried cp r & b riel took off running before officers showed up. police searched for two hours and found briel at this church parking lot on the other side of town. any idea why he would allegedly do this? >> don't have any information about that at this time. >> reporter: drugs or alcohol involved. >> no indication at this time. >> reporter: grace and briel were students at the university of mary washington. police believe they were not in a romantic relationship.

grace was an executive board member of feminists united, a member of the student government a history and american studies major who also served on the university president's task force on sexual assault. tonight a university spokesperson released a statement saying quote, it is with great sadness that we report the death of one of our students grace r. mann a junior from falls church, virginia. >> i hope that she, you know gets justice for what happened you know. it's a shame. it really is. >> reporter: the university is offering grief counsellors tomorrow. live here in fredericksburg virginia i'm shomari stone. back to you, chris. >> thanks. this is just coming into the newsroom. prince george county police are on the scene of a fatal accident in temple hills and we know a pedestrian has been killed. an brinkley road has been shut down in both directions. a man was hit and killed and police say the driver did stay there on the scene. new at 11:00, a year-long

investigation led police right to a local graffiti artist. jordan mcconaughey is accused of vandalizing metro rail cars and now he's facing felony charges. police say back in february mcconaughey spray painted two cars at the west falls church rail yard causing well over $5,000 in damage. now he already accepted a plea deal last year for spray painting metro cars at shady grove and glenmont. a local karate teacher is facing child porn charges, and now he may be on the run overseas. pearl have been investigating him since last year and earlier this month they came to his home. he confessed to receiving and trading child porn. investigators found several videos of him having sex with young boys. it looks like some of those videos were taped at on the mat sports, gym in chevy chase where he was an instructor. shortly after they came to his home he left the u.s. and escaped to the nation of georgia.

in arlington police are trying to find out when or if they will be able to speak with two children after their mother was found murdered in her home. now the kids are very young, and a neighbor found them sitting in their pajamas in front their house on 18th street. investigators say their mother is dr. bonnie black, a 42-year-old psychologist who does contract work for the fbi. dr. black is separated from her husband, and the couple is in the middle of a divorce. police say the husband is talking to detectives and cooperating. tonight a local businessman is facing life in prison after he pled guilty to using drug money to run his nightclub. jason viskeri owns the society lounge a popular sport on georgia avenue and silver spring and he bought the money -- bought the club with money from marijuana sales. >> reporter: prosecutors say the owner used drug money to acquire

the popular restaurant and nightclub and that he was receiving as much as $1 million in cash for large shipments of marijuana at the time society lounge opened. he pled guilty to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana and entered into a plea agreement. it says he was the largest customer of a drug trafficking organization that shipped large quantities of pot coast to coast. court documents also list shipping records showing huge freight deliveries that included marijuana according to the plea to his other restaurant island flavors in laurel. we've learned the 39-year-old from tacoma park runs youth basketball camps in montgomery county. his bio on the website says he played for george mason university and the minors. he faces up to life in prison when sentenced in september. no word on the future of society lounge. in silliter spring kristen

wright news 4. >> now a check of the weather. sure, a few showers today, but it looks like a great weekend coming up. coming up doug sure hoping for sunshine on saturday. >> saturday is the day we're all looking forward to. it's going to be a beautiful saturday. sunday however, a little iffy. we'll talk about that in a second. take a look at the storm team 4 radar. did see a few showers out there earlier. most of the region stayed dry, but a couple of showers came right through downtown and betz did a and laurel area and over towards bowie. right now the only shower is towards the culpepper region and one more just popped up west of quantico in through stafford county. not quite done with the showers yet. this one making a bee-line down towards fredericksburg an area that's already seen a lot of rain today. what are we watching? tonight's headlines, great saturday and much cooler on sunday and big changes come in because then we're talking rain. some of it will be heavy. i'll mention when that is in my forecast in just a minute. >> all right. thanks doug. tonight we're learning new details about an explosion out

in california. more than a dozen people are in the hospital recovering after a gas pipeline burst near fresno. a work crew was using heavy equipment at the fresno county sheriff's gun range, and they hit a pipeline carrying natural gas. witnesses saw a huge fireball shoot 200 feet in the air, and the explosion shut down a major highway for hours. at least three people have been severely burned. >> that's why i have a degree. >> do you feel good about your job? >> the towing company on the other end of that outburst is turning the other cheek. espn reporter britt mchenry was told in arlington she was picking up her car when she ripped into the clerk at advanced towing. espn suspended her for a week and she apologized but advanced towing released a statement saying it has no interested in seeing her punished. quote, miss mchenry is our neighbor. she is human and errors in judgment can be made in the heat of the moment.

the caps had their backs against the wall in game two and for a while it looked like the islanders were going to skate out of town up 2-0, and then well more live from the verizon center to hear what happened next. >> oh, it all changed. people were sitting at edge of their seat, and it may be quite right now but an hour and a half ago this place was rocking. in fact head coach barry trotz said the verizon center was the loudest it's been all season long and the crowd certainly helped the caps beat the islanders. it's now tied 1-1, but the story of the day was who was going to be in that in between the between. braden holtby out with an illness. caps came back trailing 2-1 in the second and tied it at 3. chimera gets it and puts it back in. jimmer not giving up on this one and neither were the caps.

they take the lead and they did not look book. grubauer gets his first career nhl playoff win and the caps even the series at one with a 4-3 one and head back up to long island on sunday to play in game three. in ten minutes jason puiggh is going to join me. >> today virginia lawmakers passed a new ethics bill that will make it harder for lobbyists to wine and dine them. the reform package limits gifts from any one person or company to $100 a year including meals in entertainment, and it will take effect next year. now the reform legislation was prompted by the corruption scandal involving former governor bob mcdonnel and his wife. a jury convicted the couple for accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and loans. well it appears a former arkansas governor is getting close to another run for

p.tonight on fox news mike huckabee says he'll unveil his plans about the 2016 race on may 5th in hope arkansas. huckabee won the iowa caucuses in 2008 and then faded from the race. so far three republicans have officially declared. senators ted cruz rand paul and marco rubio. a reserve sheriff's deputy killed a man in oklahoma and tonight we're getting new reaction from that man's family. deputy robert bates apologized to eric harris' family on the "today" show this morning. >> this was not an intentional thing. i have no desire to ever take anyone's life. >> bates says he meant to use his taser but accidentally pulled his gun instead. the harris family released a statement tonight saying we appreciate bob bates' apology for shooting and killing eric. unfortunately, mr. bates' apology will not bring eric back. we remain vigilant in seeking the truth and in our pursuit of justice. we're following a developing

story in iraq. tonight the state department condemned a car bombing outside the u.s. consulate in irbil. the explosion killed three people but no one inside the consulate. kurdish medical official told nbc news 12 others were wound including an american woman who taught at a local primary school. isis claimed responsibility for the car bomb which went off in a predominantly christian neighborhood full of cafes. the national mall is expected to be packed this weekend. up next at 11:00, the free concert that is drawing some major headliners and world leaders. plus the heartless crime caught on camera. someone steals a little boy's wheelchair but tonight he got some help. >> and your first 4 traffic tonight, beltway between springfield and the eisenhower connector still with

tonight a little boy in langley park has his independence back a week after a thief took it from him. joshua romero is 4 years old, and he got a new wheelchair today thanks to another boy in maryland who was touched by joshua's story. the surveillance video of someone stealing joshua's wheelchair last weekend. now 11-year-old emmanuel marshall saw what happened and decided to donate a wheelchair he had outgrown. >> how do you feel giving your old wheelchair to joshua? >> well i feel happy.

>> thank you, emmanuel, for donating the wheelchair for joshua. he's really happy to use it. >> prince george county police officials say the thief who stole the wheelchair is a heartless man, and they are still out there looking for him. thousands of people will jam the national mall tomorrow to rock out with some of the biggest names in music. the earth day concert starts at 11:00 in the morning, but some lucky fans got to see no doubt rehearsing this afternoon. some of the other headliners include train, usher, fallout boy and mary j. blige. united nations secretary general ban ki-moon is also expected to address the crowd. go to our nbc washington app to read more about the show including metro schedules and which roads are going to be closed. all right. next weekend the white house will open its grounds and gardens to the public. you have to get a ticket first, but the good news is it's completely free. next saturday and sunday the national park service will

pawtuxin river. and over towards cambridge, along route 50 showers and then this one guy right around culpepper. it's now making a bee-line right down route 3. it's going to come right close to fredericksburg and about the next hour just drifting. only moving 10 to 15 miles per hour. another little isolated area in northern stafford county. not meaning too much to us. you can see the cloud cover coming on in. a few of the showers. more clouds moving on in, and these will be with us early tomorrow morning and then we'll get in what's behind the clouds and notice the clearing in chicago once these clouds move on through. a beautiful day across the area. the warmest temperatures have been in nearly seven months. that's how nice it's going to be

on saturday. sunday however, a little different. we'll start with some sun and then the clouds real move. in all day sunday we'll be dry. don't worry about that. if you have plans, somebody just asked about the gaithersburg festival really good no. problems there. look at rain coming in at 11:00 on sunday. still dry in d.c. and here comes the rain and it gets heavy overnight. look at 4:00 a.m. really coming down here and i -- i'm upset about this rain monday morning, just terrible. it really could impact the morning rush so head's up for that. we'll continue to watch it for you. 80 tomorrow with sunshine and 77 at gaithersburg and 81 in both culpepper and fredericksburg. thinking about being outside, want to watch no doubt and matter j. blige down there along the mall looking fantastic for that. 60 degrees. get a seat early. nice weather early and 76 at 1:00 and 67979 degrees around 5:00. there's the day sunday more clouds on sunday. notice the cooler weather. actually got weather that was coming from the north so that will cool us back into the 60s.
