and we are in weather alert mode for you this monday afternoon. a tornado watch for our entire area. you may want to make sure you've down loaded the nbc 4 washington app to track the weather. here we go again, folks. >> veronica most of us seen a lot of sun today and helping to cook things up out there, isn't it? >> exactly. that's just one of the ingredients for the severe weather. we have high humidity today, too, coming with a very strong weather front that really has had a history of producing severe weather in areas of the midwest and right down to the south. >> so we could see a couple of storms. >> various storms moving through, numerous in fact. the area under an enhanced risk of severe weather and what that means for us possibility of large hail damaging wind and isolated tornado or two. take a look. the whole area here, the big

yellow box is the tornado watch up until 10:00 p.m. down to the south, severe thunderstorm watch. but it's here that really our focus is for today. again, until 10:00 p.m. meanwhile, some of those showers, thunderstorms starting to blossom just south of d.c. and some of them starting to produce some very heavy rain. sue the cell right herer a yeahs of east-northeast bound and toward manassas and woodbridge and moderate rain around 66 in fairfax. from now until 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. the threat of hail wind and the possibility of seeing a tornado or two so this will be a long afternoon and evening for us as we track these storms. folks making the way in and through the area for you what this means is it's also a high impact afternoon and evening. numerous severe thunderstorms and of course that means the possibility, too, of travel delays across the area. you need to stay weather radio.

keep it tuned here to news 4. if you can't, download the nbc washington app. guys? >> thanks. a developing story now. you're looking live coming up in baltimore where the mayor and police commissioner are holding a news conference about the death of freddy gray who died after injuries apparently suffered while in custody. earlier today protesters took to the streets of baltimore shouting i can't breathe. they're demanding action over the freddy gray case. gray died yesterday, week after the arrest. his family's attorney says gray's spine severed edsevered. we'll have more information. police say a mother of two young children was stabbed to death and found in her home. pat collins live with details in the case of murder. pat? >> reporter: jim, we now know and it's official.

this is a case of murder. but there's still a lot of questions and police are out in force looking for those answers. they were here all day friday. they were here over the weekend. and back again today. arlington county crime techs looking for clues and evidence in what they're now calling a case of murder. >> the cause of death is? >> a stabbing. >> reporter: the victim 42-year-old dr. bonnie black. a psychologist who did contract work for the fbi. she was the mother of two children a 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl. it was last friday that her children were found distraught in their pajamas in the street in front of the house. when police came to their aid, they found dr. black's body inside. dr. black was separated from her husband. he does home renovations. friday police towed his work

truck away from the scene. the couple was involved in a volatile divorce. in fact it was a court hearing scheduled in the case for tomorrow. dr. black's lawyer says there was a court order that prevented her estranged husband from going on to the property or entering that house. dr. black's estranged husband lives about two blocks away from the murder scene. his house has been under police guard since last friday. they say he's cooperating. >> have you questioned her husband? >> the husband has cooperated with police investigation at this time. he's not in plis custody. again, he is cooperating with our investigation. >> reporter: now, this is the first murder mystery in arlington since october 2012. so when you have something like that happening in a place like this there's going to be some

concern. more about that coming up at 5:00. pat, back to you. >> thank you, pat. new information right now about the murder of a university of mary washington student. news 4 has learned -- grace mann was smothered to death. >> a house mate is accused of killing her friday although just a sophomore, mann already an exceptional leader. northern virginia bureau chief has more on that at 5:00. we're learning more about that emergency landing at reagan national airport in morning. fire trucks on stand by awaiting the return of american airlines flight 3932. that plen on the way to philadelphia when the pilot reported mechanical issues and returned to the airport. the plane landed safe lay enno injuries were reported. armed men kicked in the door of a home last night in germantown. this is a scary case with few answers this afternoon. it happened around 10:45 on apple dowre circle.

the feds say he swiped the government issued purchase card for thousands of dollars of gas for himself. investigators say bobby harris filled the tank of this white lincoln navigator belonging to him manier than $3,000 worth on numerous occasions even though the card he was using assigned to an electric vehicle at arlington. the man declined to comment today and arlington national cemetery. coming up at 5:00 we see harris is far from the only one accused of misusing the fleet cards. it's been nearly two years since a gunman walked into the navy yard and opened fire. 12 employees were killed before that gunman aaron alexis was shot by responding officers. today a ceremony held to rename the building and celebrate the full return of workers. they've been related to the u.s. coast guard headquarters at

veronica johnson joins us with an update in a few minutes. six new terror arrests are raising concerns today about successful isis recruitment efforts in this country. all six men were from minnesota. federal investigators say they were preparing to travel to syria to join isis. >> prosecutors say they were not impressionable young men. they knew what they were doing. brian mooar is live on capitol hill with details. >> reporter: they knew what they were and not terribly add at one. one trying to travel without luggage. another booked a trip to spain for one day. federal court documents described six minnesota men on a mission, a coordinated but amateurish effort to travel to sir why and join isis. >> these are focused men who are intent on joining a terrorist organization by any means possible. >> reporter: ages 19 to 21 the men recruited through social

south. stafford and fredericksburg. charlottesville showing up there. not seeing the lightning as of yet but look at the cells coming down heavier in western montgomery county. charles county too. headed off to the east and northeast and right across 275. bethesda and gaithersburg will be clipped with the more moderate and heavy rains and then ashburn, too. manassas woodbridge ready to cross over 95 into 301. eastbound toward fairfax this will be and this area here will all start to fill in i think with more numerous thunderstorms and some of those storms quite a few could be severe and then a second line that will start to form off to the west and make its way through. should there be a tornado warning issued inside goat the lowest level of your home and to

an interior room. if you're outside, driving or if you know of someone that is and around that tornado warning, get off the road and seek shelter in a sturdy building. we expect also to see high winds coming through with the storms. winds gusting to around 40 maybe as high as 50 miles per hour. that means that we could have some downed trees and slight structural damage also taking place throughout our area. again, we have a long evening. here's a look at the time line. 4:00 5:00 those storms numerous. making the way through. that's wave one that will be pushing off to the east. i think we'll start to see the line form off to the west and areas of west virginia western maryland and that will start to make its way through and that's why we're going to see the storms until 9:00 10:00, possibly as late as 11:00 p.m. that second wave. there we are at midnight with most of the rain starting to lift up and through our area so numerous severe storms threat of hail and damaging wind until

10:00, 11:00. where it's still high at 9:00 60%, 70% chance to see strong thunderstorms and by 11:00 down to a 50% chance and of course midnight 1:00 a.m. down to around a 20% chance of seeing strong thunderstorms moving through. again, our main threat this of high winds. 40 50 miles per hour winds. the heavy rain of this morning, not seeing that over a prolonged period of time but we could have some brief heavy rain. and then that low to medium threat of seeing a tornado again. your tornado watch until 10:00 p.m. with these showers that are now starting to make ware way up and into the area and this will be starting to fill in more and more over the next two hours or so that by the time we're bearing cown on 5:00 6:00, 7:00 i think that there will be more storms rough weather, intense storms moving through and

keeping you updated. now first at 4, new information about the man who jumped the white house fence. late last night, the latest account, his name is jerome hunt and he's accused of scaling the fence on the south lawn. nbc 4 live outside d.c. supreme court with new information for us. mark? >> reporter: jerome hunt 54 from sacramento california walked out the door of the supreme court a free man and will have to face the charges next month. a charge of unlawful entry. here's from the charging document used a bicycle rack on the sidewalk to get over the fence and yesterday the day that he went into the yard was his birthday. 54th birthday. now, hunt told me walking out of the courthouse that he took a greyhound bus here from sacramento specifically to hop the white house fence. he wouldn't go beyond that and he said he doesn't regret what he did and won't do it again. coming up at 5:00 you'll hear

minutes with more. >> all right. more rain is just what some neighborhoods don't want. drivers had a tough time navigating some roads in northeast this morning. here's a look at olive street near eastern avenue. part of that area was shot down because of high water. three cars stalled after trying to get through that water. no one was hurt and that intersection is now open again. now to that developing story out of baltimore tonight. just minutes ago you heard from the mayor and police commission there talking about the need for more dialogue with the community. >> this comes as more protests over the death of a man in police custody are gaining attention in the news. nbc new's mark barger reports. >> reporter: sounds of protest from about 50 people this morning outside baltimore police headquarters. >> we just want justice. it's not right at all. it's not right. >> reporter: they're looking for answers to the death of freddy gray. the 25-year-old died sunday one week after reportedly suffering

a broken neck following this arrest. captured on cell phone video provided to nbc news by his attorney. >> this was a healthy man with a healthy spine and his neck wasn't broken when he was first taken into custody. >> reporter: police haven't given a cause for the injuries or explained the reason for the arrest indicate tag he ran from four officers on bicycles. during his transfer by police an ambulance was summoned and gray was taken to the hospital. an autopsy is under way. the city's mayor and top police officials say an investigation into officers' actions will provide accountability and transparency. >> a family of mr. gray deserves to get answers and so does the community and they deis everybody to have trust in the answers. >> reporter: some of the gray's friends say that trust in police is lacking. >> not running from gang members or enemies on the street. you can't look to police for help. they're hurting people. they're the new gang. >> reporter: strained relations are not new in baltimore but now

they face an all new challenge. mark barger, nbc news. officials in tulsa, oklahoma are standing by their decision allowing a reserve deputy to take part in a deadly undercover investigation. 73-year-old report baits backing up deputies during an undercover sting when suspect eric harris ran past him. he says he mistakenly shot him instead of tasing him. now the sheriff says other deputies involved in that operation have been reassigned. >> the deputies have been reassigned for their own safety. there's been some threats made against them and their families. they have a family and kids. and i'm very concerned about their safety. >> both the sheriff and baits have apologized to the family. security rules are getting tighter at the nation's airports but not for passengers. for airline and airport workers. the changes by the transportation security

right now on news 4 at 4:00 a weather alert day. a tornado watch for the entire washington area. storms moving in on storm 4 radar and they could pack quite a punch. >> storm team 4 tracking it all for us right now. vj and doug are in the weather center. when's the late semest. >> we have an enhanced risk of severe weather. covers a pretty large area. and it will go for several hours here into the evening. >> and what we're seeing right now is scattered showers and thunderstorms around the area but it's next line that we're really watching coming through

5:00 6:00. >> exactly. the area shaded in yellow down to southern maryland. even stafford. back toward areas of charlottesville. under a tornado watch until 10:00 p.m.ment the pink for the northern neck and through the rest of southwest virginia that is a severe thunderstorm watch but again we stay in the pocket of severe weather. the risk until 10:00 p.m. fairly late and even with some of the earlier thunderstorms cells we could possibly start to see some rotation some spin so again, we have been telling you all afternoon that there is the risk of an isolated tornado. we have heavier rain around lateensville. toward areas of columbia maryland howard county getting the rain. more moderate rain and addison heights to hall's hill and d.c. some wet roads at 495 but it's what comes next a second line especially to focus on and doug has more on that.

>> that line towards the blue ridge. the southern portions of the blue ridge to move in over the next couple of hours. you can see it here. future weather. happening right now. you notice where the storms are. down around front royal. as i put it in motion notice that line of storms very close to the d.c. metro area right around the 6:00 hour and notice 6:00 and there is that line of storms that we continue to watch. that's the one that we're worried about for severe weather to continue. that's 6:00. moving through towards 7:00 and 6:45 it's in through prince georges county and parts of southern maryland. that's what we'll continue to watch for the rest of the evening here. numerous severe thunderstorms likely with this. hail and damaging winds possible until 10:00 and that's why we have a tornado watch up until 10:00. >> with some of these we could not only see brief, heavy rain but the winds start to pick up. more on that here. you can see some of the wind gusts throughout the area.

25 miles per hour. close to 30 like northern montgomery county and when the intense storms come through, they'll be bringing the higher winds. around 50 miles per hour. again, we told you about the tornado risk as well. a lot of heat out there. a lot of high humidity. today topped out at 79 degrees in d.c. still upper 70s to around 80 degrees. again, very humid conditions and that's the fuel for some of these storms. once we get to 11:00 p.m. to midnight it moves out. much cooler air moves out and 60s tomorrow and we stay in the 60s all week long. as a matter of fact very cool air for the end of the week. high temperature on friday 62. and then 50s for the upcoming weekend. next chance of rain not until midweek wednesday but again all about the storms that we have got rolling through the area right now. tornado watch that covers the area until 10:00 p.m. as we will start to see more storms fill in and becoming more numerous and very strong to intense. we've got the very latest coming

up at news 4:00 at 5:00 zwrirks a night of wild weather turned deadly in virginia. a tree killed a woman inside the house in atlanta. and crews had to cut through furniture and debris to get the woman out. investigators say the ground was saturated by heavy rain causing the tree's root system to weaken. and this was the scene in southern california. a wildfire in chino moved fast burning up thous of acres of land last night. crew vs the upper hand with about 35% of the fire contained. dry conditions from the state's extreme drought helped fuel the flames. a shocking bust at a local birthday party. what this man is accused of doing feet away from a group of children. a food here and local changes and you could have in the cabinet.

tweaking the recipe for mac and cheese. will you be able to taste the difference? news 4 learned that university of mary washington student grace mann was smothered to death. a classmate is accused of killing her on friday. students returned to class today with very heavy hearts. >> reporter: with the overnight downpour the memorial to grace mann was moved under cover and moved inside this building. but it is growing by the hour. as students pay tribute to the leader and campus activist. mann a sophomore and already she was an officer in an organization called feminist united and involved in student government. two of her female roommates found her unconscious friday afternoon in the house they shared. police arrested another house mate steven vanderreel. he was also a mary washington student and the focus today is on grace mann and remembering her many contributions to campus

life. >> she clearly was someone who definitely made an impact on everyone and i think that's something to aspire to be. she clearly made everyone smile and laugh and she also believed in what she believed in and was willing to fight for those things. >> reporter: coming up at 5:00 plans being made on the campus to help students get to services for grace mann tomorrow. in virginia julie carey, news 4. may be the single loss of life on the mediterranean sea. 700 or more migrants may have died. only about two dozen people were saved. european governments say they're in danger of being swamped by the rising tide of desperate migrants. as the european union met, more migrants were killed trying to make it to greece. there is no magic solution but there is a responsibility that we have to exercise together as europeans.

a tornado watch is now in effect for the entire area until 10:00 tonight. chief meteorologist doug cameron joins us with an update so you want to stay with us. right now, after an amber alert an 8-year-old california boy safe and back home. he was sleeping in his father's car this morning when a suspect stole the car and drove off. the vehicle was discovered hours later and the amber alert was canceled. the boy was still sleeping in the backseat. police have not made an arrest yet. chaos at a university in delaware after two shootings in less than 24 hours. one of the shootings happened at a greek event with more than 1,000 students in attendance. nbc's randy gyllenhaal tells us it all started with a fight. >> reporter: the large field day cookout on delaware sit's campus turned violent by nightfall. students say the peaceful party evolved into fist fights. this video shows one of many brawls breaking out, punches

were thrown. but it got worse. by 8:00 p.m. officials say three people were shot on campus and rushed to the hospital. >> yeah. everybody heard them yeah. everybody just ran. >> reporter: students scattered after hearing the gun fire but neighbors say the ruckus didn't end there. another shooting broke out a few hours later at a student housing complex. nobody was hurt. >> what's going on? then i heard the second shooting. fired three shots. and then it's just terrible. >> reporter: there's a brief statement saying the shooter was at large. students say it isn't representative of their campus. many were up this morning cleaning up the trash left behind. >> it's a good school. sometimes stuff comes up and happens but for the most part they're all good students and stuff. oh some potentially severe weather moving into the area and could be the worst we have seen so far this season.

good evening. >> folks, right now some of you seeing rain and the entire metro area under a tornado watch right now. let's head straight to chief meteorologist doug cam camkammerer with the latest. >> there's not a going on just yet. notice the showers and a few thunderstorms moving on through the d.c. metro area and downtown d.c. seeing some of the showers. in and around gaithersburg college park earlier and now around laurel. zoom in a little bit on this section. again, the area under a tornado watch and none of these are strong at all. currently. here's the showers. bethesda. rockville. showers and then here's this one right around the i-95 area and i-95. this is the bdw parkway right here. making the way to south laurel. this's the shower we're continuing to watch moving up. heavy downpours. no lightning or thunder.

her's the line. back to the west. this is the line i'm watching right along the mountains and the i-81 area making the way in towards northern virginia and a chance for severe weather. this evening, possible strong winds, winds gusting upwards of 50 miles per hour and ice lathed tornado. tornado watch in effect until 10:00 font and we'll be here all evening long making sure that we keep you safe. guys? >> we know you will doug. thank you. firsthand from the man, the latest accused of jumping the white house fence last night. jerome hunt tells us he used a bike rack to get on to the lawn. news 4's mark segraves just spoke to the man. mark? >> reporter: jerome hunt from sacramento california told me he took a greyhound bus from california directly to washington, d.c. specifically to jump the white house fence. and he said he had a good reason to do so. but he would not say what that reason is.
