this morning, you could be waking up with a mess to clean-up following the storm. this is what the washington monument looked like overnight. you can see how that lightning lit up the sky. quite a scene there. heavy rain and hail and strong winds knocked down trees and power lines, leaving some people in the dark. crews spent the night repairing some of the damage. news 4 megan mcgrath is live with the damage in a neighborhood that was pretty hard hit. >> they had some pretty intense

medical center. officers say he left against the advice of doctors. he was last seen boarding a road-on bus near the hospital. police and family are concerned for his emotional well-being and physical welfare. a man is being tried for the murder of d.c. corrections official carolyn cross. the jury started deliberations last night. if he's found gl he faces live in prison. theft on a government credit card a story uncovered by the news 4 i team. bobby harris pleaded guilty to criminal theft for using a government fuel card to fill up his luxury suv. harris drove away in his lincoln navigator without comment. harris was accused of spending more than $3,500 on that card. next year you can see the effects of lack of school

funding at montgomery county public schools. there could be fewer teachers and larger class sizes. more than 300 staff positions could be cut if the maryland governor doesn't release education funding. leg git will join a group of leaders asking him to release $68 million that was included in the budget passed by the general assembly. more than $700,000 of slot machine wgs went unclaimed at maryland casinos. now there are questions about how that money was handled by the maryland lottery. a new audit found that all that money is supposed to go to the state, but the agency treated the money as regular gambling winnings which are split and that money among the casino and the state, the lottery officials say they have submitted a proposal to revise those regulations. ps. >> warmer temperatures mean mosquitos are on the way. what's the best way to ward them

half a decade is clarifying its advice. the panel says women in their 40s can get mammograms every year if they want to. adding it's up to the woman to decide whether she wants to risk the anxiety of getting a false positive result. the panel's recommendations are still the same though. women over the age of 50 should get a mammogram every other year. women 40 to 49 should decide what they want based on their health history. >> we tweeted a link to a page where you can check to see if your iphone or ipad apps were compromised by a virus. a thousand apps were exposed to a bug that could allow hackers to access your information. uberand some microsoft and yahoo apps were affected by this. the pittsburgh pirates tweeted out this their thoughts and prayers are with a woman who was hit by a foul ball during a game. right there, you can see kind of

this is the second race since the deadly terror attack in 2013. 12 people were told to stay away from the race. they are on the jury that will decide whether the man convicted in the marathon bombing will live or die. nbc's tracie bots joins us live now on what to expect. >> that are jury today is going to hear opening statements from the defense saying that tamerlan tsarnaev was the mastermind and that dzhokhar tsarnaev was following. the prosecutor is saying that's not what the evidence shows. he planned the attack. we do expect that the prosecution will call a lot of victims families and survivors to talk about the impact of this. we also expect the defense may call people to talk about the relationship between the

accused in several crimes is expected in d.c. superior court. propers say daniel rosen recorded women without their knowledge as they undress dsed. this happened in the adams, morgan mount pleasant neighborhoods. he pled not guilty to charges of voyeurism and stalking. investigators discovered the recordings when he was arrested and charged with soliciting sex with a minor. he's accused of jumping over the white house fence and now he is out of jail this morning. 54-year-old jerome hunt says he took a bus from california to washington then used a bike rack to climb over the fence sunday night. he appeared in a d.c. court yesterday. he told reporters he jumped the fence for a reason but he won't tell anyone what that reason is yet. >> they they they --have a good protective system for the president. they reacted real fast. that's all i'll say. >> hunt will undergo a mental

outer loop ramp is clearing up. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. brand new crash, pennsylvania avenue at walters lane. that is slowing things down. 14 before the hour now. this morning, there are still questions about what happened that caused a money to die while in police custody in baltimore. investigators released a timeline of the events there. nbc tom costello joining us live in baltimore. good morning. >> reporter: a couple of headlines. first of all, those six officers who were involved in this snen have all been suspended with pay pending the outcome of this investigation. also a headline that came out yesterday is that police concede now that this suspect, 25-year-old freddie gray asked repeatedly for medical help. he asked for an inhaler. he also asked for medical help. but police waited nearly 40 minutes until calling paramedic. by the time they arrive he was in acute distress.

they rushed him to shock trauma. he underwent emergency surgery. it appears he had a nearly severed spinal cord and crush vertebrae. as you know he died a week later, two days ago on sunday and now the focus on this investigation is what happened in that police van that was captured on home video, on cell phone video. did something happen in the van, did something as they were putting him in the van or was there something criminal? was this an accident or criminal action? we simply don't know but as you know this city has a history of very tense relationships with the police department. over the course of four years, more than 100 different people have either settled or received judgments against the police because of police brutality or civil rights violations. i talk to the mayor yesterday about this. i said do you have a problem with police brutality in the city she said we have had yes, but so has much of america. she says this could be a homicide investigation but they will determine this as this unveils and as it goes forward
