custody. plus lost and found. how a naval academy ring stolen more than 40 years ago finally got back to those it belongs to. a settlement today in a controversial police shooting. fairfax county has agreed to pay out $3 million to settle a lawsuit related to the shooting of john geer. >> but for geer's father this is not the end. he says it's another step forward. he spoke tonight with news 4's shomari stone. >> reporter: jim and wendy, it's important to point out that john geer's father says that this settlement is just the beginning. he indicates that it relieves a lot of stress. >> it's another step in the right direction. >> reporter: a load has been lifted off of done geer. fairfax county will pate family of his son john geer nearly $3 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit. >> tell us about this settlement. does it bring you a sense of

closure? >> it's a step ladder towards closure. >> reporter: fairfax county police officer adam torres shot and killed john geer in his springfield townhouse during a standoff in 2013. four officers there say the father of two had his hands held up and posed no immediate threat, but officer torres told investigators he saw gere's hands drop to his waist. geer's family filed the wrongful death lawsuit and forced fairfax count toe release those details. >> this is after waiting for 17 months of absolutely nothing so it seems like things are going, you know a little better. >> reporter: board chairman says settling the civil lawsuit was the right thing to do. >> giving the geer family closure and for us to be able to put this behind us and for them to be able to you know to find some closure in this case i think is important. >> reporter: the shooting is under investigation at both the federal and state levels. >> i would like to see an

indictment against stories and i would like to see some changes made within the county and the police department. >> reporter: now the shooting has led to a county commission that's reviewing the police department's policies. live from alexandria shomari stone. back to you in the studio. >> thanks. new at 11:00, a man accused of sexual assaulting a woman with learning disabilities has been locked up. his name is warren giddings and montgomery county police arrested him tonight. the officers say back in february giddings met the woman on an online dating site. they say he went to the home sexually assaulted her and stole a tablet. police believe the woman may not be only victim and they are asking others to come forward. giddings is facing ten charges including sexual assault and theft. >> a 14-year-old is in jail tonight and accused of attacking a metro bus driver with a taser. investigators say this attack happened in january when the

teenager was riding an e-4 bus. police say that's when he tased the driver. the driver had to be taken to the hospital and officers used video surveillance from that bus to find that teenager. >> the justice department is joining the investigation. kurt gregory has the latest on the call for answers. >> reporter: justice department announced tuesday it's conducting its own investigation into how freddie gray suffered a fatal spinal cord injury while in police custody. on monday police released a time line of the arrest. >> get off me yo. >> reporter: gray was taken into custody around 8:40 a.m. seen here in cell phone video

provided by the family's attorney. sometime between this moment and paramedics being called less than an hour later, gray's spine was nearly severed. the 25-year-old succumbed to those injuries sunday. >> what we don't know and what we need to get to is how that injury occurred. >> we will fight for freddie gray. >> reporter: in the days that have followed hundreds have taken to the streets, peaceful but persistent in their search for answers. >> they are very very concerned that this is a pattern here in baltimore city. >> reporter: over the past four years more than 100 people have won court judgments or settled with baltimore over police breault and civil rights violations. even more gathered tuesday, marching from the spot gray was arrested to a police station. >> i have a sign and i would never want them to see my son. >> reporter: tensions growing in baltimore, the latest city to come under the glare of the national spotlight and harsh

questions concerning their police. kirt gregory. >> tonight a u.s. congressman could be face inging charges for violating a gun law. he was holding an ar-15 along with trey gowdy of south carolina. assault rifles are illegal in the district and passed the photo along to the d.c. police. buck says he received permission from the u.s. capitol police to display this inoperable gun in a locked case. he told the hill newspaper, quote, it's a beautiful patriotic paper weight. the head of the drug enforcement agency michele lean leonhart is stepping down after her 35 years of service with the public agency. this move follows a justice department report last month that alleged drug agents stationed in colombia engaged in

sex parties with prostitutes paid for by drug cartels. a big game of high-stakes cat and mouse in the arabian sea tonight. two u.s. warships are talking an iranian convoy that might be trying to deliver weapons to yemen. that country is in the midst of a bloody civil war. the u.s. navy says the aircraft carrier "theodore roosevelt" and the guided missile destroyer normandy meant to secure that shipping channel. right now the iranian ships are inching along, we're told attempting to avoid confrontation. >> well we could be looking for a few more storms heading our way tomorrow. doug? >> yeah that's exactly right, wendy. right now we have kind of a cool night out there. not much wind but we're looking at a fairly cool night as skies have cleared. temperatures already in the low to mid-40s in some location and you'll notice a big chill when you wake up tomorrow morning.

satellite and radar showing the cloud cover we saw earlier and now the clearing skies and notice the clouds that they developed during the day. a few showers, too. very cold air aloft and that's what we're going to be seeing tomorrow something to watch for. headlines tonight, showers tomorrow and maybe even thunderstorms and we could be looking at one or two threats. more about that in a second. much cooler pattern over the next couple of days and watching the weekend. got plans this weekend, got that forecast for you coming up in a couple of minutes. >> thank you, doug. blue bell creamries is getting closer to pinpointing the contamination in its products. all products were reported after ten reported cases of listeria and three deaths in kansas. blue bell hired a team of microbiologists who are working with federal officials to identity cause and under a new policy blue bell will be testing all products produced at its facilities before sending them out to retailers. president andrew jackson might not be long on the $20 bill.

legislation introduced in the house today would call for a woman to be featured on that bill. if it is passed treasury would create a special commission to receive public input and then ultimately recommend who should receive the honor. rosa parks, harriet tubman and the first female chief of the cherokee nation have already been named as possibilities. it's unclear when or whether that bill will be debated on the house floor. >> montgomery county teacher. year. >> he'll now go on to compete for maryland teacher of the year. news 4's euh yang was serving as emcee tonight. >> the wizards and the caps,

a treasure huntner fairfax county has returned a priceless piece of history to a local family. it's a ring that disappeared decades ago. our jackie benson reports now on what makes it so special and what ties it to american history. >> actually i can show you exactly where i found the ring. >> reporter: when tom coles ran his metal detector over a wooded area in fairfax county recently he had no idea he was about to find something that would link him to a bit of military history. >> i found a gold ring, a class ring when i looked at it it was a class ring from the united states naval academy from 1928. the name in it was william egar

and then had an "h" all led off. >> a search led them to the son of the ring's owner who died in 1972 and is buried at arlington national cemetery. >> he said i think i've discovered your father's naval academy ring. >> howard says his father wore the ring his entire career including when he helped research and design the amphibious landing craft the navy would use to storm the beaches at normandy leading to an allied victory in world war ii so how on earth did it end up in a patch of woods in fairfax county. >> reporter: howard learned the ring bequeathed to his brother had been found a quarter mile from his home which his brother owned for many years. family members believed the ring was stolen along with others for a burglary in the 1980s. it's likely the burglar discarded the ring in the woods during his getaway worried it could tie him to the crime and there it lie until tom coles and his metal detector came along and returned to the family a tangible memory of a man they

remember as a patriot and a beloved father. >> admiral howard said he was last at this home decades ago. when he came back today he said he was surprised by how little the area had changed. in fairfax county, jackie benson news 4. >> a man in a wheelchair plunged off the side of a metro platform and two men put their own lives in danger to save him. they jumped on to the tracks at the u street station this afternoon pulling the man back to the safety of the platform in just 30 seconds. no trains were near the station and the third rail was still hot. the man also hoisted the wheelchair off the tracks. paramedics took the man to the hospital and people on the street recognized him by that wheelchair saying he's a familiar face along u street. >> the guy is a regular down here as well. we see him all the time you know. comes and have pizza, a good guy so i'm glad they rescued him and took care of him.

to be a chilly day tomorrow and you just need the jacket and step out the front door and nothing on the radar right now. saw a couple of showers well back to the west and very cold air aloft and we want to see that during the day tomorrow too, and that's what helped produce some of the cloud cover that we saw and look at all the clouds up here. look at the rain shower activity and no real organized rain and just showers and even snow back towards minneapolis making its way very close to the chicago area. here's the front right here that we are watching. that's going to make its way through our area during the day tomorrow. so we'll show you what's going to be happening, the warm air that we've seen yesterday and today, 70 degrees. that all goes to the wayside and here comesles cooler air. it's going to stay quite cool not cold but going to stay quite cool right on through the middle of next week too. future weather timing out for us fairly well as far as the showers go. tomorrow morning 8:00 a.m. no problems. see a few clouds from time to time and not bad. a pretty nice start, cool but nice. 1:00 we're still dry except for

the i-81 corridor. frederick down towards winchester and front royal. here comes the front and watch what happens here. it moves so quickly here. do i think we see a line of thunderstorms developing and because that have forward movement we could see winds gusting upwards of 40 to maybe 50 miles per hour. any rain showers and quick downpours they will be just that very very quick, in and out about in 15 minutes. the whole system out of here by 5:00, a very fast moving system and that's why we would see some winds and that's only the real concern with that system. nothing too severe so i'm not worried about that. what to expect. shower chance between 1:00 and 5:00 with some of those storms and, again, they will be very quick hitting throughout the day. highs around 70 tomorrow in d.c. and 61 in martinsburg and 71 11 culpeper. most of you are staying in the 50s and notice the overnight low temperatures 43 on friday morning and 42 on saturday

six-inch pipe on sunday evening near the high school and ended up 14 feet underground. montgomery county fire fighters worked around the clock to get this little guy out, and today blue's owner thanked the crews that saved her little guy. >> i never -- i never witnessed so many people that cared and loved the animal the same way i loved him. i think they are just amazing people. >> blue's owner says the little puppy is -- a very cute little dog. is suffering from head and chest pains but other than that he looks okay and looks like he's okay. >> he does look good. tonight a group of college students gave a boy in ohio a helping hand and i mean literally. 5-year-old jack carter was born with a right hand that never fully formed but that never stopped him from playing his favorite sport which was baseball. some college students created a new 3-d-printed prosthetic hand for jack. they designed it to look like iron man, jack's favorite
