desk. and new overnight, gunshots and a chase through the streets of d.c. police are looking for several people who opened fire on an ems supervisor. and a taste of winter as you step outside. take a look at these windchills. cold and blustery conditions making it feel like we're in the low 30s out there for many of you as you head off to work for this friday. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is watching these temperatures and a frost freezing warning. can't believe i'm saying that chuck. >> i know it. the good news is that the clouds and breeze have helped hold temperatures up overnight. a live view of washington right now, that i turned off the lights on the jefferson memorial. freeze warnings are in place for northern maryland and frost advisoriers to fauquier and culpepper counties. we could have pockets of freezing weather out there, but temperatures are comfortably into the upper 30s and 40s. i say comfortably, relatively speaking. it's far enough above freezing

where we don't need much of a freeze threat. but it has wind chills back down. how about a 26 degree windchill in hagerstown 32 the current windchill in washington. highs today, plenty of sunshine. that breeze will be with us all day long as well. northwest winds 20 to 30 miles per hour today. high temperatures will gradually climb up into near 60. rain chances are back over the weekend. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. for now, melissa mollet with first 4 traffic. >> some big backups, chopper 4 over this big stretch of delays we have this morning. b.w. parkway southbound at powder mill road, quite slow. the delays there are remaining. wide look at things, overall no major problems. take a big look at the beltway. same thing 270 into town out of town. you don't have any issues there. 66 now at 50. you can see eastbound and westbound pretty open. don't have any incidents right now. 66 keep our fingers crossed

there. taking a look at 95, slowest spot is northbound through the dale city area. 395 southbound no major problems as you're headed through the shearlington area past the pentagon. >> thank you. 6:02. right now, police are looking for some guys who shot an ems supervisor. shot at that supervisor i should say. this all ended last night after a chase at this scene on "i" street in southeast. this started up in northeast on fourth and moore streets near gallaudet university. that's where we find darcy spencer this morning with a look at how this unfolded. >> reporter: good morning. we're at fourth and morris this morning. pretty quiet this is is the food distribution hub here. you can see a lot of trucks in the area. people coming to work. but a very different scene at midnight overnight when we had this gun battle taking place and it was apparently witnessed by an ems supervisor and those supervisors if you have seen them around, they follow

vehicles to different scenes. they're usually in an suv, a marked suv. apparently this supervisor witnessed a gun battle taking place out here and decided to follow one of the vehicles that was involved in the shooting incident. that's when that supervisor was apparently fired at as you said at fourth and "k" streets in d.c. that car continued to flee from the area. we don't know if police were chasing or if the supervisor was involved at that point. but that chase did end at potomac gardens on "i" street in southeast washington. at that point the suspects bailed out of the car. and police are still looking for those suspects as well as the cars that were involved in that gun battle. aaron, back to you. >> darcy spencer live in northeast, thank you. 6:04 now. a developing story, at least 15 students are in the hospital after a stage collapsed during a high school music production. ♪

this happened in westfield, indiana, last night as you can see from the video, the kids were singing and jumping when the stage came crashing down. students who were watching the performance described what happened right after the stage crashed. >> people were crying, people were running up to the stage trying to help people out. and i mean i went up there and look around to see if i could help out at all. i mean, i carried a girl out to her car and she's good now. >> one person is in critical condition. everyone else is expected to make a full recovery. police will hold a news conference in a few minutes and we'll break in with any updates as soon as we get them. four minutes now after 6:00. and the family of warren weinstein will wait for more information about his death before they hold a funeral or memorial service. that's according to the associated press. 73-year-old weinstein of rockville died in january in a u.s. air strike in pakistan. president obama ordered the cia to find out how their intelligence before that strike could have been so wrong.

weinstein's widow says she's devastated. she believes her husband's captors are ultimately responsible here. italian aid worker giovanni lo porto also died in the strike. remembering grace mann. today the university of mary washington community will honor the student's life and accomplishments. fredericksburg city police charge her roommate in the murder. it begins at noon in between mason and randolph halls. organizers want attendees to dress in bright colors to symbolize the good she brought into the world. police say steven van der briel strangled the 20-year-old inside the home last week. 6:05 now. a much lighter note the wizards want you to do something if you're headed to the verizon center tonight. they want you to stand up and make some noise. >> go wizards. >> just like that. the team tips off at 8:00. the wizards lead the best of seven series by two games to none right now. players say they're trying to think about this game as a road game because they've had so much

new information in to the live desk about the stage collapse in indiana. we are watching a news conference that's going on right now with police. school officials and the mayor there in that town that is very close to indianapolis. we just heard the police chief talk about this being the beginning stages of the investigation, where a portion of the stage he told us has collapsed or collapsed last night. the police chief also updated the injured saying all of them are doing well.

we reported earlier that one person was in critical condition. police chief just said that person is doing very well. no longer labelled or in critical condition this morning. i also had a chance to listen in as a reporter on the scene, interviewed the lead singer who was not injured in the collapse last night. and the young woman said that there was recent construction on that stage. we have been showing the terrifying video throughout the morning. we'll continue to stay on top of this developing story. back to you. hands up, don't shoot! >> protesters continue to demand answers in the death of freddie gray. gray's spine cord was severed in the back of a baltimore police van nearly two weeks ago. last night, tensions between police and protesters flared up when demonstrators surrounded a police car. maryland governor larry hogan sent state troopers to help with

crowd control. things were peaceful where pastors called for justice. and we still don't know how that injury led to gray's death. a lawyer for the police union said gray was not strapped in with the seat belt as required by department policy. he was arrested on a weapons charge nearly two weeks ago. the six officers involved in the arrest are suspended with pay. gray's funeral is monday. this morning we are learning about a shoot-out between a bicycle cop and a suspected drug dealer. that shooting happened in philadelphia late last night. both the police officer and the suspect were hurt here. apparently the suspected drug dealer fired first telling the cop quote, i don't want to have to do this. the police officer was shot in the arm. he will be okay. that suspect also in the hospital but we don't know what his condition is this morning. new information on the sweeping police raid in italy this morning. just learning two men arrested reportedly worked as bodyguards

for osama bin laden. now, police in sardinia rounded up 18 islamists. and that is the latest back to you. >> molette, thank you. the family members of the boston marathon bomber are now in the u.s. dzhokhar tsarnaev's relatives could testify on his behalf next week. tsarnaev's lawyers will start presenting their case to the jury in the sentencing phase of the trial on monday. they want to spare tsarnaev the death penalty. the prosecution wrapped up with testimony from more victims including a father pushing his 3-year-old in a stroller when they were blown away by the blast. 18 after the hour now. a group of native american actors apparently quit an adam sandler movie over racially charged stereotypes. actor lauren anthony said he and eight others walked off the set

of "the ridiculous six" yesterday. they're concerned about the portrayal of the apache culture. it oes -- it's a spoof of the magnificent seven. it's the first of a deal between sandler and netflix. neither sandler or the production company has issued a statement. a developing story that could affect your grocery budget. minnesota declared a state of emergency because of the growing bird flu epidemic. farms across several states have already exterminated more than 7 million birds. egg products chicken and turkeys are affected. because so many animals have to be killed there's less product on the shelves. that means prices can rise for eggs chicken and turkey. more americans are binge drinking and rates are rising faster among women than men. that's according to the researchers at the university of maryland. and researchers compared the

data to see what it has in common. it said social norms that they contribute to higher binge drinking rates. hate it orloff it you can see more of the giant bright billboards like the ones outside of the verizon center. digital billboards can be used in those designated as entertainment areas. within concerned group says the signs make the region look unrecognizable. >> one reason we're so beautiful is we don't have the outdoor advertising junk that you see on the highways. all of that litter on the stick. now we have the litter on the sides of buildings. >> d-dot crafted the law to prevent the sign glare from annoying people in their homes and apartments. anyone who wants to weigh in on the proposed laws can do it through the d.c. government until may 15th.

training and new documents obtained by nbc news show in 2009, an internal review was launched found that robert bates had on duty behavior that vie lated policy. it was six years ago and that he's -- he continued to stress that since then he received hundreds of hours of state training and that bates was properly trained but there are other concerns. the sheriff's office memo from december of 2008 obtained by nbc news shows that one sergeant told the captain that bates was using his personal vehicle to make unauthorized traffic stops against policy. bates' attorney however says that bates did not receive any preferential treatment. he's pleaded not guilty to to second degree manslaughter. back to you. >> thank you. we'll see more from you on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m.

pedestrians can benefit. what's this all about? >> reporter: so, you know, eun, d-dot tell us this morning that the work starts today. you should see improvements as early as this week. as neighborhoods change and more people come in and out, there needs to be some changes to these lights to improve some of the traffic flow. that's what's going to be happening. there's more than 1,600 intersections in this network in the city. 650 of those will be addressed. so this is all about increasing traffic flow, again, 650 will be addressed. and the work will continue. there's a number of different parts of town that will be focusing on. a couple in particular are 23rd street northwest and north kap and "u" street to i-395. we are on "u" straight now, one of the corridors one of the parts of town when you have a bunch of walkers trying to cut across the street and heavy flow here, it can be stop and go and difficult to get where you need to be. so this is going to happen today

american hero and they want the movie shown on campus. the school says the movie creates a dangerous climate but they had no part in the decision to postpone that movie. the new trial for the man accused of murdering a d.c. department of corrections officials will start next week. a judge declared a mistrial in the case against dawit seyoum. jurors could not decide whether seyoum was guilty of murder or not guilty by reason of inis an tip. prosecutors say he killed carolyn cross with a wrench last september. this morning the man who shot president reagan returns to federal court for the third day to argue for more freedom. john hinckley, jr., asking to leave a d.c. mental hospital for good. government lawyers are against any sweeping new freedoms for hinckley. they want him banned from facebook as well. they also don't want hinckley googling himself. today, the court will hear from two doctors from williamsburg virginia where hinckley spends time with his mother. hundreds of mothers are expected to take part in a nationwide nurse in today.

the event is designed to bring attention to the discrimination against breast-feeding in public. one mom from ash burn will be leading a rally this afternoon at the jefferson memorial. virginia added two laws to protect nursing mothers last month. idaho is the only state left where it is illegal to breast-feed in public. a big congratulations this morning to renee roth. renee, you see her right here after she won the teacher of the year award in prince george's county. renee is a third grade teacher at tulip grove elementary in bowie. more than a dozen other nominees were honored there. she'll go on to compete for maryland teacher of the year. that winner will be announced in the fall. congratulations and thank you for what you do. ♪ some frightening moments, take a look at this video showing a group of high school students falling through the stage. a news conference just wrapped up about 15 minutes ago.

listening and watching it it's just terrifying. at least 15 people broke bones and hit their heads at the indiana high school not far from indianapolis. many of the injured are tweeting about their experience using #westfield strong which is trending. a short while ago we heard from the lead singer who watched the fellow performers fall when the stage collapsed. hear how she described it. >> i stepped forward because i wanted to go out into the crowd. and i stepped forward maybe two steps and then off of the orchestra pit and on to the steps of the stage. and literally a second later the stage -- the orchestra pit just like collapsed in on itself and everyone was standing on it and they were just sucked into that hole. >> she's lucky she escaped injury. just about 45 minutes ago we told you the police captain reported part of the stage

supervisor. this all ended late last night after a chase at the scene on "i" street southeast. it started near gallaudet university. that's where we find darcy spencer. darcy? >> reporter: good morning, aaron. it's very quiet in the area, this is a former union market area. it was a different story at midnight last night when there was apparently a gun battle taking place between people in two separate vehicles. we're told an ems supervisor with d.c. fire was in this area and witnessed this gun battle. typically the supervisors drive suvs. they're not in the apparatus. he decides to pursue one of the cars involved. that ended up at fourth and "k" street and at that point, shots were fired at that supervisor. fortunately, the supervisor was
