breaking news. information just in on a maryland teacher accused of sexually abusing a student. we have a crew at the school. i'm molette green at the live desk following a developing story out of italy where police captured more than a dozen terror suspects. coming up what today's arrests have to do with a plan to attack the vatican. sunshine and a cool northwesterly breeze outside this morning. one of those two things is going to be gone by tomorrow. i'll let you know which one of those it will be coming up. >> i'm melissa mollet with new information on the students seen in this dramatic video. the teenagers falling right through the stage floor during a musical production last night. news 4 midday begins right now.

>> reporter: i'm darcy spencer live in silver spring with breaking news where a former special education teacher's aide has been charged with having inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old student right here at the middle school. now the suspect's name is robert wilson the iii. he's 23 years old, charged with sex abuse of a minor and three counts of third degree sex offense. this contact allegedly happened between him and the student between october of last year and march of this year. he was just arrested last night. now, i justed looked at the corporate documents, they say he confessed to the crimes admitted to having sexual contact in the stairwell of the school out of the sight of security cameras and that there were phone calls and text messages exchanged between the two as well. he worked as a special education aide from august 2013, to march 30 when he was transferred over to food services to work in the

warehouse. we're hold that is a job that he applied for and, again, is no longer working here at the school. he has also been an assistant track coach at wheaton high school for the last two years. he's currently being held without bond expected to be in court later today. i'm darcy spencer live in silver spring. breaking news from the live desk. a terror network based in italy took aim at the vatican. details just coming into the live desk from italian prosecutors who confirm 18 suspects arrested today in a sweeping raid planned to bomb the vatican in 2010 but never carried it out. evidence came from wiretaps collected from the investigation and reveal a suicide bomber actually came to rome. earlier on news 4 today we told you police busted this terror network linked to deadly attacks in pakistan. security is on high alert at the vatican but no word about an imminent threat.

back to you. a developing story now. indiana state police are still trying to figure out why a high school stage collapsed in the middle of a musical. ♪ don't stop believing -- ♪ >> this happened in westfield, singing and jumping when the stage came crashing down. one of the students on that stage spoke with "today" via skype. he was standing on the edge of the stage on the right side of the screen when the orchestra pit collapsed. >> all of a sudden the floor caved and i watched 25 p 30 of my good friends, classmates and some of my best friends fall into this pit. it was for the most part just terrifying and at first it didn't seem real. >> a 15 students got hurt. they're all, though expected to be okay. is. >> hands up down shoot. community groupings in baltimore warn they will shut the city down if they don't get

answers in freddie gray's death. pastors and protesters want to see charges after gray's spine was crushed while in police custody. last night, tensions between police and breaux testers flared up when demonstrators surrounded a police car maryland governor larry hogan sent state troopers to help with crowd control. in a couple hours, baltimore's mayor are meet with community leaders about the next step in this investigation. we still don't know how gray's final cord was almost severed. a lawyer for the police union said he was not strapped into a police van with a seat belt as required by department policy. he was arrested on a weapons charged almost two weeks ago. six officers involved are suspended without pay. gray's funeral is monday. bright sunshine across our urban landscape here in the late morning hours headed into the early afternoon u. it's a nice-looking day outside but it's breezy and chilly. temperatures are just now touching 50 in washington and culpepper, still mid to upper 40s in the northern and western

us. our next chance for rain is coming out of arkansas louisiana and texas. it will be arriving here during the course of the day tomorrow. timing of that on future weather next time i see you. >> all right, chuck. hundreds of mothers are expected to take part in a nationwide nurse-in today. the event is designed to bring attention to the discrimination against breast-feeding in public. one mom from ash burn will be leading a rally this afternoon at the jefferson memorial. virginia added two laws to protect nursing mothers last month. idaho is the only state left where it's illegal to breast-feed in public. some troubling numbers out this morning about drinking in the u.s. and there's a connection to a local county here. 18% of americans are bing drinking as of 2012. that's up 9% since 2005. now, researchers at the university of wisconsin studied americans aged 21 and up. here's a look at what they found. among men, they said binge drinking is up about 5%. for women that rate is up more than 17%. now, researchers now looking for patterns across states. they say education, access and

social norms all play a part and college kids, they say, are binging more often. menonomy wisconsin had the highest level at 36%, madison county idaho had the lowest at 6%. then an interesting aside here for you this morning. there you go. when it comes to overall drinking falls church virginia had the highest rate nearly 78% of people there say they drink. breaking business news look at why comcast is giving up their plan to take over time warner. we'll be right back.

molette green at the live desk. just hearing from both comcast and time warner about the two companies dropping plans for a megamerger. word got out yesterday about this going downhill. comcast officially dropped its $45 billion bid to combine the two this morning. now, both companies are starting to talk about it. the time warner ceo announced a mutual agreement to go their separate ways. comcast ceo with brian roberts said he wanted to bring the comcast product to more cities but they structured this deal so they could walk away if the government didn't approve. now the merger sparked heavy criticism from regulators competitors and some consumer groups who feared higher prices and fewer choices over what you

watch and download. comcast is the parent company of nbc 4. back to you. right now, police are looking for a group of men who shot at an ems supervisor. it started in northeast washington. the supervisor saw the men in one car shooting at another vehicle near gallaudet university. he then decided to follow that car and chased it all the way to southeast d.c. d.c. police say the men crashed into a parked car on i street they took off and are still on the loose this morning. the family of warren weinstein is waiting for more information about his death before they hold a funeral or a memorial. the 73-year-old from rockville died in january in a u.s. air strike in pakistan. president obama has taken responsibility for the horrific mistake and the question a lot of you are asking is how could the cia be so wrong? nbc's tracie potts has a look at what happens now. tracy? >> reporter: what happens now, a lot of questions. some of them starting here on capitol hill. how did this happen?

how was information verified? was information verified before those drone strikes in january? there were two of them five days apart. and why did the cia not know that our hostage and an italian hostage were in that compound on the ground? there were two other americans killed also. they were working along with al qaeda. and this is a very local story. the family of warren weinstein in a statement now saying that ultimately his al qaeda captors are responsible but that working with the u.s. government was inconsistent and disappointing. president obama has taken responsibility. he's apologized to the family but questions remain about how this happened. back to you. >> thank you, tracie. today attorney general eric holder will walk out of his office for the very last time. the senate confirmed loretta lynch as holder's replacement. lynch is the first black woman to hold the job. holder will speak one last time as a.g. at an event in his honor later today.

a student organization at the university of maryland postponed a screening of the movie "american sniper." the award-winning movie depicts the life and career of navy seal chris kyle. the decision came after the muslim student association protested. it claims the film spreads islam phobia. after the film someone posted a derogatory comment about muslims on the students' facebook page. >> the concern is not that the film was being screened specifically but the fact that there wasn't any kind of broader discussion taking place. >> supporters of the film call kyle an american hero and want the movie shown on campus. the school says the movie creates a dangerous climate but it had no part in the decision to postpone the film. chuck? here we have a check of team team radar. we're all dry now and will stay that way for the remainder of today, tonight and on to the first part of your saturday. that moisture across the lower mississippi river valley is coming in our direction. as for what to expect chance of rain both days most likely

organizers hate this nickname "nerd prom" they call it. "nerd prom 2015" is here, the white house correspondent's dinner is the other name for it. it takes place tomorrow night. make sure you have your phone on and ready to take pictures of celebrity sightings. among the stars expected to be there, kerry washington billy jean king larry wilmore, cecily strong of "saturday night live" is the featured comedian this year. whether or not you have a ticket to tomorrow night's dinner you can watch a new documentary about the white house correspondents' dinner. "nerd prom" is a behind-the-scenes look from a journalist perspective. producer patrick gavin told the associated press he believes the dinner and the vip parties that surround it have drifted from the original purpose. that's to honor journalists and

"nerd prom" is online right now. film producers plan to release it on i tune amazon and netflix sometime soon. metro concerned about passengers pushing their luck not on the trains but on the tracks themselves. the news 4 i-team obtained shocking videos. check out these surveillance cameras which police say show nearly a dozen metro passengers intentionally trespassing on the track since late last year. including one couple that decided to turn the train station into their own personal photo shoot. some people jumping up and down on the tracks and then a man then snapping pictures as she strikes yoga poses. they go down there for a variety of reasons. to retrieve personal property, some do it as a game. why they go down is a mystery. as for the personal property part of things. metro training and police say passengers are increasingly losing cell phones on the tracks but should never try to recover them. instead, ask metro staff for help.

staying on top of a developing story surrounding a former montgomery's teacher's aide accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student. robert wilson is expected in court just over an hour for a bond review in these charging documents. wilson admits to meeting the student on a daily basis before and after school between october, 2014 and last month. he also says they met at her apartment building after winter break. now, police believe most of the assaults took place at loiederman middle school in silver spring where wilson worked until he left for another job. he also worked as an assistant track coach at wilson high. now, montgomery county school says in a statement this morning

a developing story that could affect your grocery budgets. minnesota declared a state of emergency because of the growing bird flu epidemic. farms across that state and several others are already killed more than seven million

birds. egg products chickens and turkeys are all affected because so many animals have to be killed there is less product on the shelves. that means prices at stores could rise. so far that has not happened yet. this story sounds like science fiction. the "washington post" headline reads "woman's brain tumor turns out to be evil twin complete with bone hair and teeth." our sister station in l.a. sat down with the patient and doctors who made the discovery of this medical incident. we have this report. >> i just didn't imagine any of this. >> reporter: at 26-year-old old, she was already planning her future until she realized last september that something wasn't right. >> problems with listening comprehension. a couple people were talking in the room i wouldn't understand what's happening. >> reporter: she says brain doctors near her home in indiana argued what she needed. >> the neurosurgeon is not being practical the neurologist would say. and the neurosurgeon would say the neurologist is not being optimistic in your case.

we just saw actress angelina jolie pleading with world powers to help the millions of syrian refugees just a few minutes ago she appealed for unity and criticized the u.n. security council for failing to end the four year old conflict. >> we can not look at syria and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision and think this is not the lowest point in the world's inability to protect and defend the innocent. >> reporter: jolie has made 11 visits to syrian refugees since this crisis began in 2011. nearly four million syrians, mostly women and children ran away to neighboring countries and many say it's a humanitarian

because he was friends with the sheriff. nbc's gabe gutierrez takes a look at that internal investigation and what has been uncovered. >> reporter: this morning, new questions about tulsa county reserve deputy robert bates' training. years before he shot and killed eric harris during a sting operation. in 2009 the sheriff ice office launched an internal review that found bates had incomplete field training and on-duty behavior that violated policy. bates' attorney clark brewster says he has not seen the review. >> i just know he received hundreds of hours of training since 2009 and i know that no one at the operation had any complaints. >> reporter: there were other concerns. the sheriff's office memo from december of 2008 obtained by nbc news shows one sergeant told a captain that bates was using hiss personal vehicle to make unauthorized traffic stops against policy. the sergeant wrote "what is the purpose of having policy if members of our office do not
