we begin with breaking news right now. a powerful earthquake rocking the capital of nepal. we want to start with what we know. the u.s. geological survey just upgraded the earthquake to a 7.9 magnitude. nepal police says at least 108 people have been killed in this quake. it hit around 2:00 this morning our time but noon nepal time. the usgs reporting after shocks of magnitudes of 5 and above. >> several avalanches reported on mt. everest after the earthquake hit. everest everest base camp.

other climbers tweeting severals on the mountain are missing. 400 people trapped inside a collapsed ancient building. also right now, there are some texas sized power outages in dallas. tens of thousands of people there will be waking up to blinking clocks today. storms battered the south last night. take a look at some of this video. pretty intense stuff we see coming through. you can see it's just pouring, pounding the roads out there. dealing with high winds, a lot of hail. the weather caused nearly 60,000 outages last night. now, that number is closer to 50,000 right now. take a listen to that. in kansas they had hail. tornadoes also touched down. take a look. in one spot hail the size of baseballs hit cars and people's homes. it's supposed to rain in that area today. now the severe weather system guess what headed our way. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell has his eye on it this

of hours. near 50 degrees around noontime it will rain on yourz saturday night plans and into your sunday morning. more about that part of the forecast in a few minutes. >> all right. thanks chuck. right now we want to tell you about a traffic situation. the northbound lanes of the g.w. parkway are closed at spout run. a car drove off the roadway and may be in the water there. an investigation is just beginning. southbound lanes of the parkway are still open. new this morning, investigators trying to figure out what caused a fire that forced several people from their apartments. this was in montgomery county. the fire broke out on blackburn lane. that's not lar from columbia pike. overnight we see smoke billow from the building. the bulk of the fire is out. well today protesters say they'll shut down baltimore. demonstrators demanding answers over the unexplained death of freddie gray.

gray suffered a spinal injury and died in police custody after his arrest earlier this month. stephanie rawlings-blake says she wants the protest to be peaceful. more on the errors the police made they say in their handling of gray. >> reporter: once freddie gray was arrested and placed into a police a van, they failed to put a seat belt on him, a violation of police policy. >> we know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. no excuses for that. >> reporter: police say gray appeared to be talking and moving in the van until the third stop. among the questions was he given a rough ride. jarring starts and stops that might have caused his injury. >> if someone harmed freddie gray we have to prosecute them. giving too much information to you on the front now may jeopardize that prosecution. >> reporter: in the days since

station yesterday afternoon. and then you can see the teen spat on him and then started throwing punches at the top of that escalator. the victim fell and hit his head. then the teen took off. the man was taken to the hospital and was treated. if you have any information on this attack call metro transit police. a former montgomery county teacher facing sex abuse challenges. otis wilson iii had a relationship with a 13-year-old student. he worked in silver spring at the time. this is wilson's family leaving his first appearance in court yesterday. one pushed a news camera away. another told us she found out about the charges that day. >> very very upset about what's being said about my nephew. i don't believe it's true but if it is true i wish he would have told somebody so we could have got him some help. >> this is the fourth sex offense incident at montgomery county schools in the last two

earthquake hit. climbers are tweeting several climbers on the mountain are missing. ♪ don't stop believing ♪ [ screaming ] yeah. several high schoolers are now home from the hospital after that scary scene there in indiana. we first told you about this at this time yesterday. the students were on stage performing the journey song "don't stop believing" when the stage collapsed underneath them. 17 teenagers were hurt. >> it's like a great theater department and they like try -- they work hard on it and stuff. i'm pretty sure no one in a million years thought this would ever happen. >> the school says it's still not clear why the stage collapsed. investigators will be working to find that out today. there are new calls for a hostage -- the company says

wienstein was a wonderful human being. al qaeda kidnapped wienstein. drones struck the compound and expected to hit four terrorist but found six bodies. one of those was wienstein. >> we all bleed when we lose an american life. we all grieve when any innocent life is taken. >> wienstein's wife called the assistance inconsistent and disappointing. a new study finds researchers at the university of washington found that more people including women are drinking more. they say heavy drinking is up more than 17% since 2005. they also found more than 78% of adults over 21 drink more than one alcoholic drink a month. that study found the most binge drinking happens in the state of

yesterday after finding a quantity of methamphetamines they arrested the occupant. 49-year-old fred wesley pagan is a top staffer for mississippi senator thad cochran. court documents say pagan told the agency intended to distribute both drugs in exchange for sexual behaviors. pagan has worked for cochran since he was 17 years old. senator cochran is disturbed and deeply saddened by the arrest of his long-time aide fred pagan and is suspending him of all duties pending the outcome of this case. news4 today. >> pagan appeared before a judge yesterday who released him until his next appearance in court. we'll miss her activism and her hope. but for me i'll miss her footsteps above he every morning. >> friends held a memorial for a university of mary washington

student found dead in her off-campus home. they remembered grace mann as an outspoken leader in the community. 30-year-old steven briel returned to the campus this speen. he first attended back in 2007. mann and her two female roommates did not know him before they rented him a room in the home they shared. she had been strangled. detectives collected duct tape and two belts from the scene. a friend said he never seemed violent. >> we can't understand what would compel him to do it. especially to her. from what i met and have seen he seemed regular. awkward at first, but regular. nothing unique about him at all. >> he is being held without bond in the regional detention center. a new twist in that investigation of this baby's death in stafford county.

people upset with the prosecutor's handling of the ferguson case are suing. a judge is saying he may toss a lawsuit seek egg an investigation into the michael brown case. the judge told attorneys an outside investigation may be unnecessary since the justice department reached the same conclusion as the grand jury. the grand jury did not indict a wife officer who shot and killed michael brown. in the day ahead, leaders will focus on the lessons learned from ferguson. it's part of an all-day symposium at the american indian museum on the national mall. leaders will talk about race relations and the use of police force. in virginia alcoholic beverage control officer wills soon have a special panel to answer to. they will review abc law enforcement practices. he created it after the violent arrest of a uva student last month. mcauliffe appointed 20 people to the panel. they'll meet for the first time on may 4th. today you get a shot to

there in pennsylvania. as far as severe weather today, if you're changing planes at hartsfield-jackson international, could have a slow go today. we have no severe weather threat coming our way. too cool around here and just not the right setup. we don't need to worry about severe weather, but we will have to worry with the clouds and the chilly rain drops moving in. by 5:00 i think it may be in here a little bit sooner than that. one of the different computer models shows the rain in washington as early as about 3:00ish. just know mid to late afternoon, the rain drops move on in. we may not get them out of here until probably mid to late tomorrow morning. from your weather app ready to go. that way you have the radar in the palm of your hand. 50s today with the rain moving in. 60s tomorrow with the rain moving out. a chance of a passing shower. most of the coming week looks pretty nice but temperatures staying a little cooler than average.

i guess i never really gave much thought to the acidity in any foods. never thought about the coffee i was drinking having acids. it never dawned on me that it could hurt your teeth. my dentist has told me your enamel is wearing away, and that sounded really scary to me and i was like well can you fix it can you paint it back on and he explained that it was not something that grows back, it's kind of a one-time shot and you have to care for it. he told me to use pronamel. it's gonna help protect the enamel in your teeth. it allows me to continue to drink my coffee and to eat healthier and it was a real easy switch to make.
