derrick. >> indeed. we just talked to one man who said he lost everything. take a look at this. this fire started at 2:18 this morning. there are still hot spots. they are putting water on it. 100 firefighters. fairfax county greater springfield. fort bell fore 100 firefighters 100 ges evacuated to a hotel across the parking lot here. fortunately no one injured. take a look at video. when they get the call at 2:18 they got here and found smoke and flames. also a challenge here. they had to wait for dominion power to get here to cut off power to this hotel before they could fight that fire in earnest. we talked to one guest earlier who said he lost everything after hearing explosions. >> it was a real real big explosion. that's when i started telling people to get out because i saw the smoke all of a sudden.

beautifully there. camera on the other side of the tower is looking southbound. as you look south, there's a lot more in the way of cloud cover. there you go. clouds over washington down along potomac. depends where you live farther north, more sunshine you're getting, last of raps over st. marys county and lower parts of the bay. in the 40s now but as i mentioned, improving weather picture. sky cast 4, clouds giving way to blue skies later this morning and early afternoon. highs low and mid-60s. rest of the week when i see you next. chuck, thanks. new from overnight people smashed doors of businesses and stole items in baltimore. this was the scene showing looters in the streets. it follows a day of peaceful protests in the death of a 25-year-old man in police custody. protesters clashed near camden yards and police arrested more than a dozen people. >> reporter: nightfall in baltimore and a day of peaceful

protests turned to violence. police lined the streets trying to move protesters away from orioles baseball stadium. fans inside asked to stay at the stadium until further notice. >> unfortunately a small group of agitators intervened and turned what was otherwise a peaceful demonstration into a violent protest. >> reporter: as those small groups clashed with police, other citizens risked injury to prevent confrontation. >> those people who put themselves in harm's way, to stand between those who wish to destroy our city and the men and women who were fighting so hard to protect it. >> cars damaged, store windows broken. baltimore police announced 12 arrests so far. the day began peacefully, demonstrators taking to the streets of baltimore marching to the western district police station and to city hall as well where hundreds more joined in the call for answers in the death of freddie gray.

7.8 magnitude quake with majority of buildings damaged. take a look at this video we got in of rescues in the capital. nepal police say more than 2100 people dead several charities and countries are now dispatching aid to the region. >> among those lending supportive resources to nepal, fairfax county. this rescue team on its way to nepal. we caught up with group members last night as they are collecting supplies. once they arrive the team will help search for survivors. they are trained to deal with structural collapses and perform rope and water rescues. lots of people taking sides in advance of the supreme court case happening this week. the court is hearing arguments on same-sex marriage tuesday. the crowd you see here marched on the national mall yesterday in support of traditional marriage between a woman and a man. the supreme court could permit or ban same-sex marriage nationwide.

its decision is expected sometime in june. and we're watching the stories that will impact you in the week ahead. on tuesday a lot of you are choosing some of the next leaders of the district. there are special elections in wards 4 and 8 to fill two spots on the d.c. council. ward 4 mayor bowser's former seat. marion barry held the seat in ward 8. wednesday several law enforcement agencies will face a grilling on capitol hill. you'll remember the man who flew the gyrocopter onto the capital grounds earlier this month, he -- lawmakers want to know how he made it so far into highly restricted airspace. thursday you can go to another public hearing about the new metro station coming to potomac yard. the station built on the blue line. the city of alexandria says it wants the station close to potomac yard shopping center. that's right there by the target store. one man spent more than four days in what he calls a concrete coffin. in the wake of the tragedy this

phone texting during the national anthem. well as you can imagine, this stirred up quite the debate online generated a lot of reaction. the woman responded. her name is helena andrews. her twitter says she works with "washington post." i believe she's with reliable sources gossip column. she said she was taking notes because it's 2015. meanwhile on a lighter note there were tons of jokes that made a big splash at the event including the ones from the president. it was the host cecily strong from snl who really stirred up the audience. >> all right, guys. this next part is a repeat after me. put your hands up.

examinex xfinity xfinity. a gas fire breaks out. a man becomes engulfed crews quickly put out the fire. paramedics treated him and took him to the hospital. everyone is expected to be okay. >> take a look at the picture outside of kansas. during the weather, someone went outside and snapped a photo of what looked like a tornado, multiple tornado in kansas over the last few days. the good thing is they didn't hurt anyone. what a sight. ashburn man spent four days in the rubble following the earthquake that hit india in 2001. >> he made it ah out alive. darcy spencer shares his stories as the latest are affected in nepal. >> i'm fine. >> reporter: the man you see emerging from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in india, 25 years old, spent 4.5 days as what he described as a

concrete coffin, unsure if he would ever be rescued. >> i was in total darkness. i didn't know where i was. >> reporter: it happened in 2001. he was staying at an apartment with relatives when he heard thunder. >> the sound of thunder was coming from underneath the ground. >> then everything began to shake. >> it was about 8 to 10 inches, the floor was jumping. so i had no control over myself. >> he remembers looking up. the ceiling was cracked all the way across. >> so the slab above me fell and the entire building collapsed, so it collapsed like that and then it toppled over. >> it was lying down, unable to move. >> the ceiling which had fallen, it was about two inches away from my forehead. >> he said that's the way he stayed for 4.5 days living on hope. >> i wanted to see my family and i wanted to see my family alive. >> they pulled him from the rubble and provided this video.

he would learn in the days to come no one else from his family survived. he's reminded of what happened to him as he sees images of the earthquake in nepal. fourteen years later he said his experience has changed his life. >> every single day for me is happiness. every single day is like i'm living a beautiful life. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. today one woman will celebrate a huge accomplishment at the gw parkway classic. when jamie watts turned 34 years old. she decided she was going to run 34 races this year. she has cerebral palsy. no matter how long it takes, jamie completed 34 races. this will be race number 34 gw. you can take your pet to the park and raise money for humane society in montgomery county. it's happening newtown at bohrer

searching for shot two people one in the chest, one in the leg. the man with the chest injury died. the other recovering in the hospital. >> people in india raid for victims of deadly earthquake. 34 people in india killed in the quake and its aftershocks. india sent a military aircraft to nepal with medical equipment and relief teams. united states will send a million dollars in aid to nepal following earthquake. more than 2100 people have died thousands more hurt. magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit outside the capital of kathmandu. kelly cobiella live at the london bureau with more on the massive cleanup effort. really kelly, a deteriorating situation. >> good morning. more strong aftershocks this morning have triggered more avalanches on mt. everest. kathmandu, more building falling down. images of people people from the

debris pulled out alive from a hotel. unfortunately the number of dead and injured is climbing. nearly 5,000 are injured and treated in makeshift hospitals. that number is sure to rise. on mt. everest it's a tense day today. three more avalanches hit one of the camps. climbers talked about hearing rocks falling and not being able to see them. about 15 of the most seriously injured were taken off the mountain by helicopter today. at least 17 are dead on mount he have rece. among them dan fredinburg the man who worked for google. it was his second trip to mt. everest. he was there last year when sherpas. they are treating people in the streets because of the fear of more buildings falling down and also are running out of medical

welcome back. faculty members at a virginia women's college are suing to keep the school from kiloing. 56 faculty members at sweet briar say the school's budget crisis doesn't exist. they are seeking damages. in february sweet briar's board voted to close the school. in the week ahead the first lady will visit fairfax county. the wife of president obama and wife of the prime minister of japan will meet in great falls. during their visit the first ladies will tour japanese immersion classroom and watch a student performance. to commemorate the visit great falls elementary will plant a cherry tree in the garden. this wednesday we're learn whether loudoun county schools broke the law. a parent is suing.

a parent said the loudun school board did not respond to 50 requests for information under freedom of information act. the school's public information officer said the parent failed to pay any of the required fees for the request. this week's wednesday's child, we shared the story of julie and her new family. you may remember her from last march when she talked about having lost a connection with her cultural heritage when her parents died and she became a foster child. barbara harrison recently got to see julie again for the first time at her new home. >> hello. >> hi. oh my gosh. it's so great to see you again. it's been just over a year since we first met julie at a lesson in korean cooking. after her parents had passed away julie was placed in foster care and was sad to have lost a connection to korean american culture, especially the food and music she loved. one year later -- >> who is here.

she nearly slips twice close to the high-voltage third rail. she does hand styles close to the electric third rail. a metro employee intervenes and they would hop on the next train. that's not all the i-team found. in march a man lowered himself onto the tracks in lando. another did it to, d.c. metro center. he struggled to get out until 30 seconds later when a man ran over to help. metro transit police chief some of these images. >> maybe easy to get in but not easy to get out. >> it's not. you take the average male 6 foot give or take the distance from the roadway to the granite edge is about 4 feet almost. you'd have to have incredible -- not incredible but decent upper body strength. >> like this man climbing over two sets of tracks. transit police eventually pulled him to the platform and then arrested him. >> they go down for different reasons. personal property, some for a
