news4's megan mcgrath is live with what you need to know. pretty scary situation, megan. >> reporter: yeah it was a scary situation. it happened in broad daylight outside of the main entrance to ravensworth elementary school. they say that the victim is a juvenile. now, it was 3:15 on friday afternoon. police say a man came up behind this boy and grabbed him and tried to lure him away. now, the boy did offer resistance he fought back he was able to get away and was not injured. but this suspect is still on the loose. now, here's the description. he is a white male 20 to 30 years old. 6 feet tall with blond hair. at the time he was wearing a black long sleeved shirt and jeans. anyone who may have seen this person in the area, you are asked to call police. back to you. death toll rising in nepal.

right now more than 3,600 people are confirmed dead. that number is likely to go up. rescue efforts are continuing but it's tough out there. landslides making it difficult to access some areas. some places can only be accessed by helicopter. you're looking at new video in. people doing whatever they can to get out of the area following several aftershocks. some aid has arrived but the need is simply too great and resources especially at the hospitals are limited. now, this was the worst earthquake to hit the area in at least 80 years. it also triggered an avalanche at mount everest. 18 people tied in the avalanche including three americans. aaron? >> angie, thank you. 5:02. we are hearing from the people in our area affected by the earthquake. this woman grew up in nepal. she works at a subway and she told us her family survived but they lost everything. >> i would love to have been there, but right now, you know, the position for me is like i'm helpless. i can do nothing.

>> basnet told us the seventh day adventist church is holding a fund raising this weekend. the pentagon says military plane is expected in nepal today. a disaster response team is on board. search and rescue teams from the united arab emirates france israel and england are all heading to kathmandu as well. the pentagon's plane is also carrying a team from our area. take a look at this video here. this is the news4 crew that met virginia task force one out of fairfax county as the team was preparing to leave. they're part of the county fire department. we'll be following their efforts to help and you can as well on the department's facebook page. today there will be a funeral for the baltimore man who died after becoming critical hurt in police custody. freddie gray killed last week during a police van ride to the

station. his spine became severed. baltimore police have not explained how that happened. the family is asking for an end to violence as they prepare to lay him to rest. however, tensions remain hight. saturday's protests began peacefully but turned violent as the night fell. businesses were vandalized and looted. 34 people were thrown in jail and six police officers were hurt. gray's family is reminding protesters they want justice not revenge. >> yeah please, please stop the violence. freddie gray will not want this. freddie's father and mother does not want violence. >> the head of president obama's initiative for minority males will attend the funeral today. the six police officers involved in the arrest are under suspicious and the department has begun an investigation. and in annapolis, about 100

as we said that highway had to be shut down for several hours so firefighters could put out the flames. amazing, nobody was hurt. a rogue coyote is off the streets of new york city. he was cornered in an outdoor cafe. officers moved in and tranquilized the coyote. she was not hurt. she's now going to the aspca for care and should be released back into the wild soon. it's the latest in a string of coyote sightings in the city this month. i would bring your pets inside the house. if you have coyotes running wild in new york. just goes to show we're running out of space. >> a good point. ten minutes after 5:00 we're at 47 degrees outside our studios. that's four degrees cooler than 20 minutes ago. >> i know. what's happening? >> it's chilly out there. weather and traffic on the ones. tom? >> it's enough to make the coyotes howl. and we have them around our region too. standing this morning at the bus

in laurel just in. take a look. the laurel volunteer fire department tweeting this out as they got control of the situation. this is out of the 300 block of gorman avenue as first 4 traffic reported, some of the roads are closed off right now. looking at a chinese restaurant which had flames coming out of the roof. no word on what caused the fire. thank you. right now, d.c. police need your help as they investigate the shooting death of a 39-year-old man. darryn conte died another man was hurt in the shooting. this happened early yesterday morning near butter nut and fourth street in northwest. in the takoma neighborhood. d.c. police are offering a $25,000 reward for information that solves this case. and d.c. police need your help finding a man who shot a man not far from gallaudet university. paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital and he's in

critical condition. there are a lot of questions this morning about white house cyber security after a report that hackers obtained some of the president's e-mails. "the new york times" says russian hackers gained access to the e-mail archives of people in the white house. and that's how the hackers ultimately obtained some unclassified e-mails sent and received by the president. the hack took place as the u.s. and russia were in a standoff over ukraine. the white house did not comment to nbc news. in recent weeks the defense secretary has stressed the importance of cyber security. >> the first is defending our own networks and weapons because they're critical to what we do every day. they're no good if they have been hacked. >> the president e-mails frequent frequently. chinese breached then senator's e-mails in 2008 when he was campaigning. it appears that contract talks are back on in the president's office. the negotiations had been paused as the school dealt with the "rolling stone" rape story. a deal could be done by the end of june.

light heavyweight crown on may 23rd in las vegas. tomorrow a major case in the same-sex marriage fight is going to the supreme court. the court could effectively legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. groups are taking sides already. take a look yesterday this group held an interfaith prayer service in arlington to show their support for gay marriage. saturday supporters -- or opponents of gay marriage held a rally on the national mall. a decision in the case is expected in june. well, they thought they were under attack. guests at a fairfax county hotel learned they were facing another emergency. the fire that forced them from their rooms and who alerted them. take a live look at the district this morning. we're looking at temperatures in the 40s in most spots at this early hour. tom will tell us how warm it will get in your hometown. that's coming your way at 5:31 with your weather and traffic on the ones. it's coming up on 5:24 right now.

inside the car. they said the fire was so intense that the license plate and v.i.n. digits were destroyed. golfers were surprised by this story. >> seems to be a sign of the times. crime -- >> i never heard of any problems out here so i don't think it's a reflection of the golf course or the area. just one of those things that happens. >> now, investigators hope that forensics on the burned out car will give them some clues as to to -- as they work to find out exactly what happened. a series of explosions rocked hotel guests in the middle of the night. then a fire occurred. this happened at the quality inn on richmond highway in fairfax county. guests say they thought they were being attacked yesterday morning. the fire started in the electrical room of the hotel. a group of air force cadets helped to evacuate the guests. nearly everyone lost their belongs in their rooms.

seven prince george's county firefighters are recovering after their fire truck crashed while heading to a fire. firefighters say the morningside crew was on its way to a building fire early sunday morning. the fire truck swerved to avoid hitting a car and hit a telephone pole instead. causing the fire engine to flip over. this crash happened on branch avenue and curtis drive. the firefighters were treated and released from the hospital. 5:31 your time right now as family and friends prepare to say good-bye to freddie gray. baltimore police are investigating his death. the 25-year-old man died last week from a spinal cord injury. he was somehow hurt during a ride to the police station. this weekend peaceful protests turned violent in baltimore. tracie potts live on capitol hill can more on how people are impatient for answers an arrests here. >> reporter: they certainly are, aaron, good morning. it's a big national story happening up the road from us in maryland in baltimore. tensions are extremely high today as they lay freddie gray

to rest. there are a lot of questions about why he was even arrested in the first place. there are three investigations under way, the city and the justice department and the state which plans to have some information to turn over by friday. the protests thousands of people were peaceful, but some of them, many of them out of towners, got out of control. there was some looting. there were protests outside camden yards. people at the game had to be held in until those protests died down. freddie gray's twin sister fredricka, said her brother would not want this type of violence. today the focus is on his life and by the way, there are three people from the white house being sent to that funeral today including broderick johnson the cabinet secretary who by the way is from that particular neighborhood. in fact his mother was funeralized at the very church recently. very familiar with the community and the tensions there. >> all right, tracie potts, thank you.

police in prince william county will soon be outfitted with body cameras. county officials approved a $3 million budget to equip them with the cameras. it will begin in july starting with 50 officers. today dzhokhar tsarnaev's family could take the stand in the boson the bombing trial. take a look here, you can see -- we'll try to show you some video of them arriving in baltimore. the defense lawyers are hoping the attorneys can persuade the jury not to sentence him to death. >> he's shown no remorse for his crimes so they're in a very, very tough position. >> if even one juror is against the death penalty, tsarnaev will get life in prison. the japanese prime minister begins with a stop at the boston marathon finish line. the respect is part of a high profile visit by prime minister shinzo abe. he has been here to highlight

robbed him four times in his more than 50 year career and he decided enough was enough. he fought back to defend himself. police arrested the suspected robber. right now the chilean government is sending soldiers to help clear the streets of a thick coating of ash. this comes after the calbuco volcano erupted twice this week. some roofs collapsed under the weight of the ash. at least 1,500 people have left their homes and right now chilean authorities are downgrading the likelihood of another big eruption. we showed you the smoke and the lava and the fire coming out of the volcano. incredible images to see. >> we need to figure out what's happening with our weather because saturday was kind of dreary and cold and yucky and then sunday, glorious. but now we're going to need a jacket this morning. it's only 46 degrees outside of our studios in washington. you know that's the warm spot right?

today." >> a developing story right now, firefighters are on the scene of a restaurant fire along gorman avenue in laurel. take a look at this photo. this was posted on twitter. we are told the flames sparked just after midnight. no one was hurt. the cause is still under investigation. search crews are still looking for five people after strong storms capsized several boats at a regatta. take a look at this shot by a sailor. it shows choppy waters and two people died there. ten boats capsized. sailors described what it was like. >> i really thought i was going to die actually. i mean i was really scared. i thought that the water would keep coming in. the boat was going to sink, you know, that would be the end. >> i watched the video a lot today. and it sank in how lucky we are. because not everybody came home. >> the fair hope yacht club sponsored this race and issued a statement saying it was heart broken over what happened.

darfur international and jewish world walk organized it. organizers want the officials to end atrocities like the crisis in darfur sudan. they're raising money to improve the lives of survivors. april is genocide awareness and prevention month. you'll notice more metro police officers at your bus stop. they're ensuring that everyone pays for their metro trip. this is part of a special 90-day pilot program. the next two weeks officers will give violators a warning and then on may 9th, officers can fine you from $50 to $100 for not paying for your trip. all you have to do is drive on the beltway during rush hour to know we are a nation of drivers. if you need any more proof take a look at some of the stats from the federal highway administration. in february alone, we logged

the least expensive list and d.c. was not included in the survey. ford drivers take note they're recalling half a million cars because of complaints that the doors may have been flying open while the cars are on the road. the problem appears to be faulty door latches. they were installed on 390,000 ford fiestas and fusion and lincoln mkz. ford says it's received hundreds of reports and more than 1,000 warranty claims. there was actually one fiesta driver who said he had to tie his door shut with a seat pelt. ford dealers will replace all four of the door latches for free. teens are helping senior citizens connect with their loved ones using social media. 20 students from charles smith jewish day school trained seniors in montgomery county. they sat down with the residents and helped them to understand how to use their computers and
