live view from the tower camera looking east over northwest washington. headlines for the rest of the day, we have about a 30% chance of some showers this afternoon. and then a greater chance of showers moving in later this week. next week and traffic on the ones coming up at 6:11. your bus stop forecast and what to wear for this chilly mondaying. a look at your first 4 traffic with melissa. >> a brand new crash popped up. this is northbound indian head highway at farmington road. when i was talking to a couple of minutes ago, i said it's getting slow there and i came in and this is why. northbound indian head highway sounds like a serious crash, but it sounds like at least one lane is getting by. eastbound 198 at route 1, that situation in laurel with the fire. this is the restaurant here that had the fire overnight. but it looks like all those lanes are now open. 95 northbound in virginia as you

drive through woodbridge live here you don't have any issues. a little bit of volume before this. we were going 45 to 50 miles per hour this morning. so just a warning there. of course it's pretty typical. but a warning for you. 66 headed into town you are about 41 miles per hour there as you're headed out of manassas. out of town you're not having any problems here this morning. now back in ten minutes with some travel times. >> thank you, melissa. it's 6:02 and this morning the death toll from nepal's 7.5 earthquake is rising. rescue crews are struggling to reach the remote mountain villages and we are getting an update on how much it will cost to repair the damage. news4's angie goff is following all the developments from the live desk. >> that death toll surpassed 3,600. take a look crews continue to dig through the rubble for survivors. people are catching planes and buses, whatever they can to evacuate the region. now, some first aid has arrived, but so much more is needed.

there's overcrowded in t a shortage of supplies. a lot of places as you mentioned not reachable because of the landslides. also just in you mentioned how much this could cost to recover. well, one agency said long term reconstruction could be in the long run upwards of $5 billion. this is in a country where the average family lives in poverty. aaron? >> angie, thank you. an elite search and rescue time arriving in nepal today. they met members of the virginia task force one as they were preparing to leave. that group is part of the fairfax county fire department. we'll be following all their efforts to help out and you can do that as well on the department's facebook page. some of you are organizing ways to hem in your neighborhood. in rockville, the adventist church is holding a fund-raiser this weekend. basnet told us about the fund-raiser. her family lives in nepal. basnet said they need more than

donations. >> please pray for me my family my people. all my nepalese people they need your support and your blessings. >> basnet's family survived the earthquake but lost their house and everything they owned. tonight students at george mason university will hold a vigil for the victims and you can follow all of the stories from here and nepal on nbc washington.com. 6:04. right now police are looking for a man who grabbed a little boy just as school let out in fairfax county. that boy was able to get away. this attempted abduction happened in front of ravensworth elementary school and megan mcgrath is there live with a warning from police. megan? >> reporter: well aaron, certainly parents are on edge in the springfield area. following an abduction attempt. a man grabbed a boy outside the main entrance of ravensworth elementary school. attempted to abduct him at 3:15 in the afternoon on friday.

so this occurred in broad daylight. police say that the boy was able to put up a fight. he resisted. he was able to get away from this man and was not injured but the suspect is still on the loose. and police are looking for help in trying to locate him. he's described as a white male 20 to 30 years old. he's 6 feet tall with blond hair. he was wearing a black long sleeved shirt and jeans at the time that this happened. 3:15 friday afternoon outside the ravensworth elementary school. if you saw this person in the area police would like to hear from you. we'll start to see the parents and children arriving here this morning but disturbing news learning of this situation. and police are hoping to find this suspect. we have more information that you can get on exactly what happened and what police would like you to do. you can go to our mobile app or our website, nbc washington.com. megan mcgrath news4. 6:06 now. tomorrow the montgomery county

council can vote on a plan to renovate the office building. the $31 million renovation project has been on the table for a while but last month george leventhal dropped the proposal. the board of education argued the money should go to solving the overcrowding issues instead. according to "the washington post," levin hall believes he has the votes to move forward. 6:06. even if you're not a big sports fans you want to watch the capitals play tonight. it's do or die, one and done, the game is at 7:30 at verizon center. we did find some tickets for less than $100. you can watch the game on comcast sports net. winner goes on to the eastern conference semifinals. and eun, tell us about your wizards. >> the wizards they're moving on in the playoffs. they took care of business last night, beating the raptors and sweeping the first round. look at the celebration there. the first four game sweep in

>> police in prince william county will soon be outfit with body cameras. county officials approved a $3 million budget to equip 500 officers with these cameras. the rollout will begin in july starting with 50 officers. tomorrow a major case in the same-sex marriage fight is going to the supreme court. the court could effectively legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. groups are already taking sides here. take a look this group held an interfaith prayer service to show their support for gay marriage. on saturday opponents of gay marriage held a big rally on the national mall. the decision in this case is expected in june. all right. 11 minutes after 6:00. >> we are talking about a chilly start to the day. we were hoping for a warm-up. this is a pretty sky. i hope this means we'll have pretty weather. >> yes, the sun will be breaking through. sunrise is five minutes away. we have a partly cloudy sky at the bus stop this morning. you need to layer up a low

just in new poll numbers that tell us how you the voters feel about those who want the top job in our country. for the first time, jeb bush would beat hillary clinton in the battleground state, but clinton beats all other potential republican challengers. now even with that she fails to get 50% of the vote against any of them. now, as for the gop, still no clear front-runner but bush and rubio, marco rubio from florida, closest to the top. while clinton holds a solid lead among democrats including former democrat chris webb and o'malley. now over to you, eun. >> thank you, angie. now 6:17. the clinton foundation said it made some mistakes in how it disclosed its donors. the foundation is under fire after new books sparked questions about whether donors

have sought influence beyond the charity. acting chief executive says that the charity accidentally lumped in government grants with other donations. she says the foundation will refile some tax returns to fix that issue. critics say the book lacks hard evidence. the book is due may 5th. today we expect to hear opening statements in the case of a man on trial in the deadly shooting at a colorado theater. james holmes is charged with more than 160 counts including murder attempted murder and rigging explosives at his apartment. prosecutors say holmes shot and killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a movie theater outside of denver in 2012. holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. his attorney said he was in the throes of a psychotic episode. and today, dzhokhar tsarnaev's family c the stand in the boston bombing trial. he was found guilty on all

counts for that bombing at the boston marathon two years ago. a jury is deciding whether to sentence him to death. you take a look here, in this video you can see tsarnaev's family arriving. they can testify to say he should serve life in prison instead death. police are hoping forensic evidence helps them solve a suspicious death in bowie. a groundskeeper found a car ingulfed in flames at the golf course. the fire was so intense, the license plates and v.i.n. number of the car were destroyed. police are trying to determine who shot a man several times in d.c. this shooting happened last night in a parking lot near montelo avenue in northeast. paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital in critical condition. heavy flames, thick smoke could be seen for miles. look at the video right here as

this tanker truck caught fire near los angeles. that truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel. that road has since reopened nobody got hurt. hotel guests rocked by a series of explosions and then a huge fire. this happened at the quality inn in fairfax county. the guests say they thought they were being attacked early yesterday morning. the fire started in the electrical room of the hotel. a group of air force cadets happened to be visiting from new york and helped evacuate the guests there. everyone was able to get out safety but almost everything that was in their rooms was lost. 6:19. seven firefighters are waking up at home after their fire truck crashed on a way to a fire. they were on their way to a building fire and the fire truck swerved to avoid hitting a car and instead the truck hit a telephone pole causing the truck to flip over. look at the pictures from the

scene. it happened on branch avenue and curtis drive in hillcrest heights. the firefighters were treated and released from the hospital. a judge will decide whether the stafford county school board can move forward with a redistricting plan. eight stafford middle school parents filed a grievance over plans to move the students to different schools to relieve overcrowding. lawyers for the school board argued the parents don't have a right to sue. a developing story right now. a severe storm moving across north texas producing a number of tornadoes. you take a look here at our live radar picture. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein says there have been 19 tornado reports in just the last 24 hours. at least one of those tornados was a mile wide. and that strong storm system is mying high winds and -- is bringing high winds and hail to texas. >> oh my gosh we have softball sized hail. >> look at that. that was taken 75 miles outside

then at 395 at the third street tunnel, lots of things happening there. in news for your health even a little bit of television can make your kids overweight. kids who watch one hour of tv a day were 70% more likely to be obese. researchers at the university of virginia conducted this study. they found most 5-year-olds watch more than three hours of tv every day. a new study finds that more kids will choose healthy lunch options with some incentives. researchers at the cincinnati children's hospital medical center found more students bought so-called power plates at elementary schools. the plate includes four nutritious foods and a prize. workers put smiley faces on the plates and they were given prizes like stickers minibeach balls and temporary tattoos and sales rose 300%. researchers say this is a low cost and effective way of getting our kids to eat healthier foods at school. well this morning, a rogue coyote is off the streets of new

morning, melissa. you have an accident where chopper 4 is up over -- where is this? >> chopper over this. this has been there for a little while so we're getting a little bit of bottlenecking. northbound indian head highway at farmington road. you can see the vehicle off to the left of things and then on the right side of the roadway. so we're slowing a little bit. looks like according to the map a lot of red because of people hopping off on to livingston road. you might want to stick with it instead of taking livingston poth are slow. 66 west blocking a lane. eastbound at 50, another crash with blocking a lane as well. so we are having somebody drive live for us. 66 west near nutley. look at the westbound lanes as soon as you hop on outside of the beltway you're seeing it pretty jammed there because of that crash and all of those delays in northeast washington newton street northeast at 22nd. a water main break with the closure. remember inbound 395 at 3rd street tunnel nothing happening. quite slow.

i'm back with travel times in ten minutes. >> thank you, melissa. it is 6:32. today will be the funeral for the baltimore man who died after becoming critically injured in police custody. 25-year-old freddie gray died last week during a police van ride to the station. gray's spine became severed. baltimore police have not explained how or when the incident happened. the obama administration will have a presence at gray's funeral. the head of the president's initiative for young men of color will attend. broderick johnson is a baltimore native and will attend with two other administration officials. as the family prepares for today's funeral, several investigations are under way right now. city, state and federal investigators are all looking into gray's death and tensions in the city of baltimore still high after violent protests this weekend. nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill with more on how people are growing impatient and they're looking for answers and arrests. >> reporter: exactly.

all about the questions. we saw 34 arrests over the weekend out of thousands who protested peacefully. police said most of those arrest for the looting and smashing of windows and cars were from out of town. this is a big national story right here in our backyard. but they're looking for answers. why did gray die after being in police custody, how did he sustain the injuries he did why was he arrested in first place? we do believe that one of the investigations the state -- the state's office, state's attorney's office is supposed to issue a report on friday that should give them some better sense of where they want to go from here. but those protests over the weekend got pretty violent. >> tracie potts, thank you. in annapolis, another group rallied in support of law enforcement. they carried signs that said blue lives matter. about 100 people took part in yesterday's rally.

a group called united for blue organized that event. and right now search crews are still looking for five people off the coast of alabama. strong storms capsized several boats during a regatta there on saturday. a sailor took the video you see here it shows the choppy waters in mobile bay. two people died. meteorologists say that storm came in fast and furious. new this morning firefighters are still on the scene of a restaurant fire along gorman avenue in laurel. chopper 4 flew over the happy fortune restaurant a few minutes ago and you can see the caution tape wrapped around the building. we are told the flames sparked after midnight. the cause is still under investigation. it appears contract tack -- talks are back on in the president's office. it had been paused as they dealt

breaking news right now on the beltway. we are talking about the outer loop at 95 in maryland. we have three lanes blocked. we're talk about a three-mile backup at this point this morning. so going to get nasty out there. outer loop at 95. as far as travel times in maryland the travel times we have up at least, not a big deal. 270 southbound germantown to the beltway, a tiny bit slow. and 95 north here 15 minutes behind from quantico to the beltway. 395 inbound a little slow from the beltway to the bridge. i'm back in a couple of minutes. maybe you stash away extra cash for your summer driving gas prices are up again. you're paying 13 cents a gallon more today than you were two

weeks ago. d.c. drivers paying the most as you might expect. a gallon costing $2.63 on average. in our area of maryland, drivers are paying $2.57 a gallon. in virginia a gallon will cost you $2.34. and in west virginia a gallon will run you $2.53. whether you take 66 or 270 or the beltway, you're not alone on the roads. and the federal highway administration says more are hitting the roads than ever. in february alone, americans drove more than 221 billion miles. that is the second highest figure for february in the past 25 years. so far driving is up 4% from last year. yeah a lot more cars on the road. people are willing to drive longer distances. >> even on the smaller roads that i get congested all the time. coming up on 6:41 an

on its feet. take a look, you mentioned that rising death toll. sadly, that number has surpassed 3,600 people. rescue efforts are proving extremely difficult right now with threat of landslides across the area. supplies are limited though aid is starting to make its way in. meanwhile n the wake of the aftershocks we are watching as people scramble to get of the area evacuating by plane and by bus. this is the most devastating earthquake to hit nepal in at least 80 years and it triggered that avalanche on mount everest that killed 18 people including three americans. the united states among several countries now sending aid to nepal. the pentagon says a military plane is expected there today. search and rescue teams from the united arab emirates from france and england are all headed to kathmandu as with espeak. and the pentagon's plane is carrying a team from our area. take a look here news4 crew met

6:48 now. right now as you get your kids ready for school fairfax county police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a boy in front of a school. this happened just as classes let out on friday afternoon at ravensworth elementary school in springfield. news4's megan mcgrath is live with what you need to know. >> reporter: well, eun, you can see behind me here the officer inside pulling up to the scene a short time ago. as they prepare for students to come here to ravensworth elementary here this morning. a lot of watchful vigilant adults will be keeping an eye on the children as police look for a man who tried to abduct a boy from in front of the school. the boy was near the main entrance to ravensworth when a man came up behind him and grabbed him. then tried to lure him away. now, the boy fought back. he got away. and he was not hurt.
