right now, a large crowd has gathered for the funeral services of 25-year-old freddie gray. his death after being taken into police custody has sparked days of protests in baltimore. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk with his family's call for peace today. i'm eun yang. we're keeping an eye on what has become a desperate situation in nepal. the death toll continues to rise and we're learning about missing americans in the quake zone. i'm chuck bell. clouds are building rain chances are increasing. complete check of the forecast just ahead. i'm barbara harrison with what you need to know about tonight's must-win matchup for the capitals. news 4 midday begins right now.

i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. the funeral for the baltimore man who died after becoming critically hurt in police custody is just beginning. you can see right now lots of folks at the funeral for freddie gray. we're streaming this live on the nbc washington app. thousands of people expected to attend 25-year-old freddie gray's funeral. you can see dozens of them in that shot right there. of course gray died last week after stuffing a spinal injury. baltimore police have not explained how or when that incident happened. the cemetery burial will follow this morning's funeral. we'll have much more on twitter and facebook throughout the morning. tensions remain high following a turning point in the freddie gray demonstrations over the weekend. saturday's protests turned violent as night fell. police cars damaged, businesses vandalized and looted 346789 people were thrown in jail. the baltimore police department

launched an internal investigation into freddie gray's death. the six police officers are being questioned. the investigation centers on how gray's spine was severed in police custody on april 12. he died a week later. the justice department has opened a civil rights investigation into this matter within. people are desperately trying to find their loved ones in nepal today. the death toll keeps growing. as of minutes ago, officials confirmed more than 4,000 people died. one american from georgia is still missing now. posts on google person finder show american families are looking for at least 10 others. so many planes are trying to reach the country, air traffic controllers turned some away to keep the airport running. aftershocks are still rocking the ground as well. nbc's richard engel shows us how they're forcing people from their homes. >> reporter: with the aftershocks still coming people here understandably don't want to spend time indoors, let alone spend the night in their homes so they're camping out on the sidewalks and in the parks, any

bit of green space is being occupied. this frightening new video gives you a closeup of an avalanche that cascaded down mount everest following the earthquake. take a look. you can see people duck for cover right before a wave of snow and rocks descends on a base camp on that mountain. right before it happened a man recording the video said "the ground is shaking." the avalanche killed at least 17 people including three americans. we told you several countries are sending search-and-rescue teams to kathmandu. northern virginia sent one elite team there. take a look this is virginia task force one, part of the fairfax county fire department. we're following the group's progress through the department's facebook page. the team should arrive in nepal tonight. also tonight, students at george mason university will hold a vigil for the victims at 6:30. you can follow all the stories if here and nepal on

i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. we're waiting for vice president joe biden to begin swearing in our new attorney general. loretta lynch will be the woman for the job. the senate approved lynch last week. lynch won the confirmation with a 56-43 vote. eric holder stepped down on friday. we'll keep an eye on that for you. the clinton foundation said it made some mistakes in how it

disclosed its donors. the foundation is under fire after a new book sparked questions about whether its donors sought influence with hillary clinton while she was secretary of state. the charity says it accidentally lumped in government grants with other donations. critics say the book lacks hard evidence but the author says it lays out a pattern. the book is due on shelves on may 5. there are a couple interesting takeaways in the 2016 poll numbers of battleground states in virginia. this is a poll of registered numbers in virginia. will it's start with the basic question. is anyone ahead of hillary clinton? look at this right here. only one candidate is able to edge her out. that's former florida governor jeb bush. keep in mind bush has not officially declared he's running. so how is the gop looking right now? well as you can see it's wide open. jeb bush clearly has a lead right now with 17% of the vote. marco rubio's not far behind with 16%. then you have chris christie with 10%. rand paul with 10% as well and

scott walker with 10%. so wide open all in the mix. now on the other side, here's the democratic field as you're taking a look here. dominating the democratic field is hillary clinton with 80% of the vote then you have everyone else jim web with 6, joe biden with 5, bernie sanders with 2 and way on the bottom of the list is martin o'malley polling at just 1%. temperatures right now have made it into the mid-and uper 50s across the area. most locations will jump up into the low and mid-60s but clouds are building and there's a chance for a couple passing showers starting early this afternoon up to early this evening as well. it could be breezy at times. here's future weather. there's the shower chance building to our north and west and over time the chance of the scattered showers making it to the metro. not everyone will get rained on but there's about a 30%, 40% chance of a better risk across northern maryland and the panhandle of west virginia then everybody dries out tonight. here's your first check of the four-day forecast.

elementary school in springfield on friday. the boy managed to get away. news 4's megan mcgrath talked with parents and students as they arrived at school this morning. megan, good morning to you. >> well good morning, eun. if you look across the street you can see the mobile surveillance camera system they've set up in the front parking lot of ravensworth elementary school and when the kids came to class this morning, there were police officers standing out front keeping an eye on things. this is a disturbing situation. it happened in broad daylight. a man tried to snatch a 12-year-old boy right on school grounds. added security at ravensworth elementary in springfield as police continue to search for a man who tried to abduct a boy there last friday. >> it was very scary. if you have your kid going to any school and you hear of something like this you are very very concerned. it could happen to your own child. >> reporter: it happened right around 3:15 in the afternoon. police say the boy was near the

main entrance of the school when a man grabbed him from behind and tried to lure him away. the child broke free and was not hurt but with the suspect still out there, parents like donna quackenbush are talking to their kids, reminding them to be careful. >> staying together in pairs, in groups. never being by himself. being very aware of his surroundings. i am glad there is increased police presence because that makes her feel better and that makes me feel better. >> reporter: police are looking for a white man between 20 and 30 years old, six feet tall with blond hair. he was wearing a black long sleeved shirt and jeans. >> reporter: and police still haven't figured out who that man is. they're hoping that someone from the public may have seen him in the area might come forward with information and if you do have any information, you are asked to contact police. in springfield, megan mcgrath news 4. >> thank you, megan. today we expect to hear opening statements in the case of a man on trial for the

colorado movie theater massacre. james holmes is charged with more than 160 counts including murder attempted murder and rigging explosives at his apartment. prosecutors say holmes shot and killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a theert outside denver in 2012. holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. his defense attorney says homes was "in the throes of a psychotic episode." prosecutors say holmes carefully planned the shooting. right now lawyers are making their case in defense of dzhokhar tsarnaev's life. tsarnaev was found guilty on all counts for the bombing at the boston marathon two years ago. today his family is taking the stand. you can see some of them right here. defense lawyers say that tsarnaev deserves life in prison not the death penalty. >> oh my gosh we've got softball sized hail going on -- and i just -- >> did you see that? talk about a close call. a strong storm system brought high winds and hail to northern

texas. the video was taken yesterday about 75 miles outside of fort worth. you can see the hail smash into the windshield. fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. at least 19 tornados were reported. one of those twisters was a mile wide. the storm system knocked out power to more than 30,000 customers, crews are still working to turn the lights back on. the same storm system is moving into louisiana today. so we want to find out from chuck bell what our area is going to experience weather wise. i hope nothing serious like that chuck. >> nothing like that. i've chased for many many years when i was in college at oklahoma. i can tell you one thing, when you see softball size hail it's time to stop. that stuff will smash the window as you saw in that video. i've been in several cars that have lost the windows. it can be quite scary. weather slowdowns for us today, between now and 4:00 not much. a few showers in the evening, combine that with rush hour might be a little slowdown between 4:00 and 8:00 and clearing up after that.

temperatures this afternoon climbing up into the low maybe even mid-60s for a brief time. that shower chance late on in the day. all concerns on a monday are about the weekend. eun i have good news for you. saturday and sunday look great with sunshine and temps in the 70s. >> awesome. thanks chuck. a new poll finds most americans support same-sex marriage. quinnipiac university surveyed more than 1,300 registered voters across the country. 58% of them said they support same-sex marriage 34% say they oppose it. the numbers are one day before the supreme court hears four same-sex marriage cases. the court could rule to effectively legalize gay marriage nationwide. in fact, tomorrow the supreme court will hear arguments in a landmark case that could pave the way for same-sex couples to legally marry in all 50 states. the group called freedom to marry is running tv ads before the justices hear that case. >> today 63% of americans agree that marriage is a

a developing story in stafford county. stafford county sheriffs say a man died in a shooting 5r7bd o'clock a.m. we sent chopper 4 to clint lane where it happened. you can see detectives searching for clues. we're working to learn the man's name. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. right now, the funeral for the baltimore man who died after being in police custody and then having his spine severed. he it's starting right now. thousands of people are expected to attend 25-year-old freddie gray's funeral. freddie gray died last week. he suffered a spinal while in police custody the week before. we are streaming this live for you on our nbc washington app. baltimore police have not explained how or when that incident happened. the cemetery burial will follow this morning's funeral. tensions very high after a demonstration turned violent there.

tracie potts joining us now with more on that and the investigation into into freddie gray's death. >> reporter: those protests drew a lot of national attention. there were thousands of people in the streets of baltimore and most of them police said were peaceful. but some of them -- and police said most of those were out of towners -- were not. 34 arrests, there were some stores that were looted there were cars with the windows smashed in. at one point they had to hold people at camden yards because of the demonstrations going on outside. now, the investigation. there are at least three that we know of -- the city the justice department the federal investigation, and the state. and we should get some information on that state investigation, some results by friday. back to you. thanks tracie. the death toll from the earthquake in nepal keeps growing. officials have confirmed more than 4,000 people have died.

alabama. they were part of a regatta when their boats overturned near hurricane-force winds. two people died. nbc's mark potter reports on their recovery efforts. >> reporter: with bothers still missing this morning. race participants who survived the storm know just how lucky they are to be alive: i'm very fortunate. i'm very blessed. >> reporter: joshua edwards, who took these pictures at the height of the storm with his mother at the helm says it's the worst he's ever seen. >> by the time we realized it was going to hit us it was on top of us a matter of minutes. >> reporter: coast guard boats and aircraft along with local authorities have been searching mobile bay non-stop. >> we're working our hardest still to bring those still missing back to their families. >> reporter: 40 boaters -- some racers, but mostly others just out sailing -- were rescued after the storm hit. richard mather who shot this video says he and his crew pulled three people from the water, all three clinging to a single life preserver. even while the search goes on

elementary school in springfield. fairfax county police say a man tried to abduct a boy in front of the school on friday. it happened after school was dismissed. police say the boy was near the main entrance when a man grabbed him from behind and tried to lure him away. the child escaped and was not hurt. we posted a description of the suspect on nbcwashington.com. this afternoon, opening statements are expected to begin in the trial of the man charged in the colorado theater massacre. james holmes faces more than 160 counts. prosecutors say holmes shot and killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a movie theater back in 2012. nbc's leanne greg has the story. >> reporter: here at the arapaho county courthouse for the first time prosecutors and defense teams will outline their cases which, until now, have remained secret because of a gag order. james holmes faces more than 160 counts including first degree murder attempted murder and charges of rigging his apartment with explosives as a diversion from his attack at the theater.

but the question is not whether holmes, a former neuroscience studented committed the crimes it's whether he was sane enough to be punished for them. prosecutors have said the only justice is death. >> this case comes down to insanity and the death penalty. nothing else. was the shooter legally insane at the time he committed the heinous crime? >> reporter: results of two state mental evaluations will be among evidence heard by the 12-member jury and 12 alternates. the defense will argue holmes was in the middle of a psychotic episode at the time of the attack, unable to know right from wrong. if the jury agrees his life would be spared and holmes without committed to a state psychiatric hospital. leanne greg nbc news centennial colorado. right now, lawyers are making their case in the defense of dzhokhar tsarnaev's life. tsarnaev was found guilty on all counts for the bombing at the boston marathon two years ago. today his family is taking the

the numbers are out one day before the supreme court hears four same-sex marriage cases. right now people are already lining up at the supreme court to hear those cases. the justices will hear arguments tomorrow. the court will basically decide two questions -- does the constitution require states to license a marriage between two people of the same sex? the second -- does the constitution require states to recognize a same-sex marriage when it was lawfully licensed in other states? the justices will hear cases from kentucky michigan ohio and tennessee. same-sex marriage bans have been upheld by the federal appeals court in cincinnati. a florida couple will be in the district tomorrow to support the plaintiffs in the case. jeff and todd dell may were the first gay men to marry in florida. >> really more than just one case or in this case four cases going to the supreme court. it's about the entire movement going to court. >> there's a lot of plaintiff couples from other states that are going to be there as well so

a credible threat to law enforcement. this is just in to the newsroom. the baltimore police department has received information that various gangs, including the black gorilla family bloods and cripps have entered into a partnership to "take out law enforcement officers." they're warning law enforcement agencies to take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of all of their officers. today chipotle says that they will serve you food that has not been genetically modified. all of the burrito chain's restaurants are using non-gmo tortillas, rice and marinades. its pork and chicken sill come from animals that eat gmo feed. chipotle is the first national fast food chain to totally remove gmos from its food. for more than two months now, ellen degeneres and matt lauer have not let up with their pranks on each other. well now, ellen pulled another fast one on matt but it's all for a good cause. look at their announcement just
