north here in west baltimore where so much of the activity was happening yesterday afternoon. i can tell you there is still a lot of debris that is strewn across this particular intersection here. we saw a lot of activity. there's a police presence here as well, this morning. the governor larry hogan, has declared a state of emergency here in baltimore. he called in the national guard after making that declaration. you take a look at the trucks that were laltimore tonight. 100 soldiers in the first response the head of the maryland guard says up to 5,000 soldiers could be made available to come to baltimore if those resources are required and asked for by the governor. baltimore police they are saying most officers who are out of the hospital were who were hurt from thelast night.

several fires still smoking at this hour in multiple parts of the city. we saw some reports about a new two-alarm fire a little south of here on pratt street. the mayor here put a curfew in place. 10:00 tonight, nobody on the streets of baltimore after 10:00 tonight until 5:00 tomorrow morning. the school system here in baltimore is also shut down as a result of this. this is violence that is rolling into hour 13. all of this of course coming on the heels of the death of freddie gray. after he had been arrested and apparently suffered some severe spinal injuries and we saw that there were demonstrators in the streets here over the weekend and then what happened here last night turned much more violent than what we had been seeing and of course resulted in the looting and the damage the fires, the large, large police presence. there are folks from police agencies all around the state of

maryland here helping out the baltimore police department. we're going to continue to pull together the latest information as things are changing and developing with this story. we'll update you here in just a little bit. for now, we'll send it back into you. aaron. thanks so much. right now we are hearing from the baltimore police commissioner anthony bats according to the commissioner much of the unrest began with high school students. this was around mondawmin mall. >> protesting this is not your first amendment rights. this is just criminal acts doing damage to a community that is challenged in some ways that do not need this. i am proud of the officers who are out there sustaining rocks and bottles who were sent to the hospital and their courage for standing tall. >> the commissioner said the national guard has arrived and is now helping hold down

structures. now, back to you. thank you, angie goff. in the midst of all the violence the gray family gathered to speak at a local church. freddie's mother says destroying the city will not bring justice for my son. >> i want you all to get justice for my son but don't do it like this here. don't tear up the whole city man, just for him. that's wrong. >> a responsible investigation is thorough complete real unbiased. >> the family attorney bill murphy says the family wants practical solutions and justice for freddie gray and the family has faith they say that u.s. attorney loretta linch will conduct a thorough investigation into his death. the baltimore mayor held a news conference outside of the

fire in east baltimore. >> to watch a group of criminals go through our city with an intent to destroy, what does that solve? it's destruction of a community. the same community they say they care about, they are destroying. you can't have it both ways. >> firefighters are investigating whether that fire is connected to that protest. all fires are under control in baltimore city. it was a busy night for firefighters in baltimore. a fire broke blocks away from johns hopkins hospital last night. there is no word on the cause of that fire. breaking news coverage continues this morning with the words that have some people raising their eyebrows. what maryland's governor had to say about

streets in baltimore. that's about ten minutes away from the inner harbor. rioters have looted dozens of businesses and caused a lot of property damage. more than two dozen people were arrested. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake put a curfew in last night. we still don't know how the 25-year-old or why his his spinal cord was severed. >> there is the washington monument live view. the clouds are producing a few sprinkles. your weather and traffic on the ones now as we approach 4:41 on this tuesday morning. we are getting a few sprinkles just to the north of baltimore and east of there and the eastern shore, but these as they track to the south tend to break up maybe getting a few

she finally did, instantly we signed the executive order. we already had our entire team prepared. >> that is maryland governor larry hogan and you can hear him saying that he's glad that baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake finally called him when she did. people asked whether the mayor should have called for help sooner. the governor said he didn't want to question what baltimore officials were doing regarding the situation. he said he declared emergency for baltimore less than 30 seconds after the mayor requested it. aaron gilchrist is there. >> reporter: the governor has closed his offices in annapolis. he's moving his office to baltimore to help deal with the situation here. he's canceled his public schedule for today. he's devoted his time and state

resources to deal with the situation that's unfolding here in baltimore. he's in constant communication with the leadership here and he's been talking to folks at the white house as well. we know late last night he held that news conference. he talked with president obama to talk about the situation unfolding here. he call the national guard to help out here as a last resort. that was the term that he used that was the term thaft head of the national guard used and he says he did not make that decision lightly. >> he thanked me for the action. said we thought we were doing the right thing. he said i assume you and your team are exercising restraint. and i said we do. >> the call for the national guard after people set cars in fire and looted businesses in their own neighborhoods, threw bricks cinder blocks were launch at fire trucks.

all the rioting here and the destruction, of course unfolding literally minutes after the funeral for freddie gray was taking place here in baltimore. the family had asked that all the violence be stopped while that funeral was happening and in the hours that followed that funeral there. we can show you the video inside that service yesterday afternoon. thousands packed the new shiloh church in baltimore. there were screens that projected the slogan"black lives matter." >> freddie's death is not in vain. after this day, we're going to keep marching after this day, we're going to keep demanding justice. >> among the mourners yesterday was erica garner the daughter

of eric garner who died being arrested with a choke hold. she said the video reminded her of her father saying he can not breathe. we're hoping calm can return to the city of baltimore. this very large law enforcement presence is designed to protect property and people in the city as well. we've just seen another armored vehicle roll up to the scene that's been mostly calm through the night despite all the debris here and the large police presence that we see. we expect that to be the case throughout the day. there will be more police departments to help the policelaw enforcement. >> what are the factors in what the day cou the fact that there's no school today and a lot of people said the protests the rioting began

when school let out and police were saying a lot of the high school kids were behind more of the violent acts yesterday. how do police plan to deal with a bunch of kids who are not in school today? >> reporter: we saw from some of the chopper video we had yesterday, as school let out, we saw people mixed in with looters were wearing school uniforms in some cases. we know there are a lot of youth in that crowd. today, it's that large police presence. we heard the chief of papa troll here and the mayor that they are not going to stand idly buy and let violence happen in baltimore. it's very possible we could see police engaging more with anybody, child, youth, or adult as the day rolls on. but the goal here is to keep the peace as much as possible. this whole situation began with students throwing rocks as

we mentioned, bricks and bottles at officers outside the mondawmin mall in west baltimore. you can see video of the scene here. the students targeted an armored truck as well. you can see they are throwing things at that truck right now. rocks and bricks. they pulled bricks from a crumbling wall to throw them at officers who were trying to protect themselves with shields. this morning, at least 15 baltimore city police officers are recovering from injuries. chopper 4 captured video of one officer with what looks like a head wound and he's being carried by his fellow officers. a police captain says officers had broken bones and one was knocked unconscious. prince george's county police tweeted that several of their officers were hurt but not seriously. maryland transit police said one of their lieutenants was also attacked. president obama is pledging help for baltimore and he's urging governor larry hogan to use restraint. the president received an update from the baltimore mayor last

night. valerie jarrett also spoke with the governor. we told you a curfew takes effect in baltimore tonight at 10:00. the city is effectively shut down. baltimore city schools are closed today as i mentioned. johns hopkins and the university of maryland-baltimore are asking everyone on campus to stay inside. prince george's county montgomery and frederick county schools canceled all field trips to baltimore until further notice. this is a headline that continues to unfold across the region and here's your first look at today's "baltimore sun." it captures a city that has descended into chaos. the paper tweeting out its made

areas are 40s, including shenandoah valley. you can post your pictures. i posted this one yesterday of the low clouds that produced some of those sprinkles during the afternoon and you can post those on my facebook and on twitter and i share on instagram. there's the capital now under the cloudy sky. by 8:00 we'll still be in the 40s with a lot of clouds around. the winds will start picking up. already, we had gusts around 15 to 20-mile-per-hour this morning. we claim into the upper 60s by late afternoon, and making it up to near 70 degrees. lighter winds on wednesday, storm team 4, four-day forecast partly cloudy up around 70 tomorrow afternoon again. cooler weather moves in. next chance of rain on thursday. highs reaching low to mid 60s. occasional showers on thursday evening and off and on during the day on friday as well. a little bit cooler on friday with highs low 60s.

4,300 people died in an earthquake in nepal. aid workers try to access areas near the epicenter. at least four americans are among the dead but others are still unaccounted for. in just a few hours, the supreme court will hear historic args that could ultimately legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. the arguments center around whether states can define marriage as between a man and a woman. they will also look whether a same-sex union in one state should be recognized by other states. conservatives point out only 11 states have granted rights to same-sex couples through a vote on legislature. all other rights have come from court rulings. >> there's nothing in the constitution that says one way or the other what marriage policy should be. there's reasonable arguments on both sides of this issue. let's ask citizens and their
