here. don't tear up the whole city man, just for him. it's wrong. >> now, neighbors prepare for a citywide curfew and brace for what's to come in the day ahead. looking live at baltimore right now where the situation has stabilized quite a bit over night but not completely. police in full riot gear still standing by to see what they face in the day ahead. there's no school today. students are expected to be at home but we'll see what the situation -- how the situation unfolds in the day ahead. good morning, to you. we have complete coverage of the situation in baltimore. let's bring in aaron gilchrist who is anchoring our coverage now from baltimore. aaron, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you as well. you know you are absolutely right. things have quieted down quite a bit here in baltimore since late last night but this is still a city that is very fragile this morning as we wait for light to
5:01 am
break and hope that the violence does not resume here. you mentioned that there are still a significant number of police officers even national guard soldiers who are positioned across different parts of baltimore at this hour. i want to show you some of what we're seeing on the ground here. this spot where we're on pennsylvania north, this is a site that was very busy through the activity yesterday and you can see that there are still a few people moving around the city here. there's a lot of debris. we're right in front of the cvs that was looted. there's lots of things that were burned out here in the road. we stepped up here and said the fire department had to come through and deal with broken glass on the ground and as well as smoke and flames coming out of this store here. we show you some video from late last night as well. there were police officers in riot gear. we've got police officers from across the state of maryland that are in the city of baltimore right now assisting the baltimore police department with crowd control, with property -- trying to protect
5:02 am
property here in the city. they were in riot gear. they still are, and there are arm ordered vehicles as well across the city trying to protect the officers who are trying to protect the city and we saw an enormous amount of looting throughout the day yesterday, throughout the afternoon and late into the night where people who live here presumably in baltimore are going into the businesses that they normally shop at and taking things as they are moving across -- particularly the west part of the city of baltimore. again, i'll point out, you can see that there is still a police presence here on the ground. these folks are holding a line if you will. maryland state troopers helping baltimore city police at this particular scene. we also know there are fires still burning across baltimore this morning. my colleague darcy spencer is with me as well here in baltimore. she's at city hall with the latest developments from that perspective. >> reporter: just a few minutes ago we heard the fire trucks responding to yet another fire not far from where we are at city hall over open west pratt

street. we understand this is another potentially massive fire burning here this morning. it was an incredible night of destruction here in the city of baltimore. we want to go to some video from late last night. this was just an incredible scene last night of this fire that happened. one of the many fires. but you know the sad part about this this was some senior housing that was being built in the community and it takes a long time to build these kind of projects to get the kind of money that you need to get senior housing and it was affiliated with a church and members of the church just stood out there and they prayed and they cried and they talked about the fact that this is something that's being done to help the community and that was simply destroyed and went up in flames last night. initially officials said that that fire was connected to the rioting and looting that was taking place. then they walked that back a little bit. so we're not sure exactly if it was connected or not but considering the events of what happened yesterday with the looting, all the fires that were
5:04 am
set and all the violence that was happening, it's definitely within that realm of possibility that this was a set fire and again damaging something that meant so much to the community. it was either finished or near completion. seniors were going to be moving in there and that was a housing project that was desperately needed here in the city and it simply went up in flames. i just want to mention as we were driving into the city this morning, we could smell the smoke from all the fires that have been set. we saw off in the distance some smoke rising in the air and just the smell filling our car, so definitely devastating night here in the city of baltimore. again, that curfew will go into effect. they are hoping to not have another night like that tonight. aaron, back to you. >> darcy, thank you. absolutely right. we smelled the same smoke as we were coming in this morning. that three-alarm fire that the fire department is dealing with as well not far from here south on pratt street. we know there have been fire units brought in from other counties surrounding the city of
5:05 am
baltimore to help deal with that situation. the mayor has said that they don't know for certain as darcy mentioned that the fires were set by looters or rioters if you will but they are going to be investigating that to try to get to the bottom of that. there were some shootings here in baltimore overnight as well. more here in just a second. right now, i want to get everyone at home caught up on the weather and traffic. >> complicating firefighting efforts, a bit of a blustery wind this morning. there's a cluster of sprinkles on the eastern shore. it's a chilly morning. we're in the mid 40s metro area in much of the region. upper 40s right in washington and 50 near the bay. we'll have mild afternoon with blustery winds and rain chances moving in later this week.
