those heading west on connecticut avenue won't have to cross the busy street. a meeting will take place in northwest at 7:30. pat roberts is taking the helm of the dwight d. eisenhower memorial project. he faces a challenge, building support for the project. it's been delayed for years over objections to the design by eisenhower's family and others. roberts says eisenhower never stopped in the face of adversity and the commission won't either. it is an unforgettable image, the marine corps image has become a bit weathered. and now philanthropist david rubenstein is giving more than $5 million to help restore the bronze, and improve the landscaping. the memorial will remain open during the work. northwest d.c. on "m" street in the 1200 block where d.c. police are investigating a shooting that happened a short while ago in this neighborhood. you can see there one, two, three police cars. one just left. couple of officers just went inside this apartment building. this is the claridge towers building. one came out and left the scene here. police found a man shot here a short while ago. he was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital. police tell us the victim and the suspect -- they believe know each other. but we don't have any further details as this investigation is just beginning. we're live here in northwest d.c. i'm molette green. back to you. >> all right, thank you. it's 5:01. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. we want to check the forecast as well. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein telling us about a bit of a cool down before a warm-up.

protests over the death of freddie gray are now spreading nationwide. people are marching in new york, minneapolis and boston. you can see they shut down streets. in baltimore the second night of curfew ended a few moments ago. it quieter night. take a look at this video here from chopper 4. it shows smaller crowds at west north and pennsylvania avenues. protesters kept their marches in the city peaceful. and police said some people did throw rocks at officers. they arrested 16 adults and two minors in the last 24 hours. police had to release half of the more than 200 people jailed since monday. the law says officers have to charge anyone they arrest within a 48-hour period. they couldn't complete all the paperwork in time. baltimore police will hand over their account of what happened to freddie gray to the state's attorney's office. there are reports that say that will happen tomorrow. there are others that say that it will not. we still don't know what happened to freddie gray exactly. "the washington post" published one new account from another

prisoner in that police van. the prisoner said gray was banging against the walls of the van intentionally trying to hurt himself. the post says the other prisoner was separated from gray by a metal barrier and could not see him. the gray family attorney disputes in i implication that gray somehow severed his own spinal cord. thousands marched across the country to demand answers about what happened. >> we're strong we're matching all night long. >> this is what it looked like here in washington. you can see the demonstrators walked by freedom plaza and the wilson building. the protesters held up signs that said black lives matter. dupont circle pennsylvania avenue and u street were some of the areas shut down. officers did not arrest anyone in d.c., but that was not the case in denver. you can see them marching past the denver jail. right behind them, police officers in riot gear. they arrested nine people, at

least one for felony assault. and here is the scene from new york city. we just learned more than 100 people were arrested overnight. protesters blooded the -- flooded the streets on the way to times square. and in ferguson, they protested where they protested last year. now it's not clear if the shootings in ferguson and the protests there were connected. michael brown's father spoke to our nbc affiliate in los angeles. he said he's against the violence in ferguson and in baltimore. >> they said that they wanted peaceful. we wanted peace. >> michael brown, sr., is in l.a. as part of a new initiative to educate communities. we'll tell you what he said he hopes people will learn from the protests. that's coming up in 15 minutes. six minutes after the hour.

today a judge is expected to set a new trial date for the man accused of murdering a d.c. corrections official. dawit seyoum killed carolyn cross with a wrench last september. last week, jurors could not decide if he was guilty of murder or not guilty by reason of insanity. and a mother is charged in the disappearance of her own children. her children sarah and jacob, had been missing since last september. police believe they're dead. police say that hoggle has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. new d.c. abortion law is stirring up another battle with the house republicans. the house is set to vote on a resolution to disapprove of the law. here's what the law does, its bans employers from discriminating against workers who get abortions. it also bans discrimination based on birth control choices. friday's house vote to disapprove of that new law is

mostly symbolic. it is unlikely to go anywhere in the senate or get to the president's signature. it is now 5:08. today, bernie sanders is expected to officially announce a presidential bid. that makes him the second candidate to challenge hillary clinton for the democratic nomination. sanders is an independent from vermont. he's known for fighting income inequality and the influence of the wealthy on lawmakers. clinton remains dominant so far in the polls. all right. here we go. it wouldn't be the playoffs if the caps or the rangers got together. they start a best of seven series tonight and the capitals are hoping this is their year. the rangers, they're the nemesis, they ousted us during the last two playoff runs. game one is tonight at 7:30 on the nbc sports network. carol maloney will be there for all the action and she'll coverage at 11:00.

i'm kristin wright at the live desk. pictures in this morning of a dramatic rescue of a teenager in nepal. we are learning now that virginia's fairfax county urban search and rescue team helped several international rescue teams were there as well. they worked for six hours using an excavator and other tools to free this teenager from a small hole. you can see just how frantic and huge this effort was to get to this teenager. possibly trapped for five days since the earthquake. he was amazingly awake and talking when they finally got to him. the death toll in nepal growing still, 5,500. back to you. >> thank you. the parent company of three local hospitals donating up to $1 million to support the

earthquake relief efforts in nepal. hca runs the reston hospital center and stone spring center. the money will be split between three organizations. the investigation into the virginia -- university of virginia's student's controversial and bloody arrest is complete. we're waiting to learn how they'll be released. alcoholic beverage control officers arrested martese johnson outside of a pub in march. johnson's attorney says the investigation shows abc agents approached johnson because they thought he had a fake i.d. the video of him bleeding while being handcuffed questioned whether the agency used excessive force. the commonwealth's attorney hasn't set a time line for the release of the report. with the attention on police brutality, michael brown's father is now working to help communities around the country. michael brown, sr., is in los angeles today. he says the violence is leading to a positive message. >> do i think it's okay no. but at the end of the day, those

closures for the next several days in order to do some of that work and move big equipment around. this is going to be a problem for people who travel through this area. it's a very congested area, lots of tourists around this time of year. so we are going to definitely see some traffic tie-ups. now it gets under way today after the evening rush hour. 15th street take a look at the map, 15th street is going to be closed between jefferson drive and constitution avenue. starting today at 7:00 p.m. through tuesday. then when that closure is over with, we are going to see another closure in the area. madison drive. here's the map. madison is going to be closed between 14th and 15th streets. that's going to start on may the 5th. that closure will continue through the end of the week. so we have already seen some traffic tie-ups in the area because of construction vehicles and even when the roads were open. with a complete closure we are expecting to see things get more dicey. so just plan your trips

point. georgia avenue at norbeck, that crash at the intersection there. back in ten minutes. it's 5:25. several beaches remain closed this morning along parts of south maui after a deadly shark attack. a woman was pulled from the water yesterday in a popular surf spot. this is the third fatal shark attack to occur in maui in the last few years. testimony continues this morning in the colorado movie theater massacre trial. there was gut wrenching testimony yesterday as we heard about the youngest victim killed in that theater. prosecutors asked the cousin of 6-year-old veronica moser to describe what she did the moment she realized veronica had been shot. >> i put my hand on her stomach to see if she was breathing and she was. so i kept telling ashley that veronica was okay. >> veronica died after first responders got her out of the theater. the alleged shooter james holmes sat still during proceedings. border patrol agents found a secret tunnel.

the length of two football fields. that tunnel runs from southern california to mexico. and it is still under construction. agents discovered the tunnel after spotting a sinkhole south of san diego. they didn't find anyone inside. it's not clear whether the tunnel is being used to smuggle people or drugs. ♪ today vietnam is marking 40 years since the end of the war. a parade with floats and soldiers wearing dress uniforms marked that event today in ho chi minh city. at least 3 million vietnamese and nearly 60,000 u.s. troops died during the vietnam war. the curfew in baltimore expired about 30 minutes ago, but not without some arrests. an update on the situation there. no fare news4 goes undercover with the metro police as they crack down on those trying to get a free ride. and now you can see the rain is moving this way.

attack and he had been deported to el salvador following a conviction for a previous assault on a woman. i watched the love of my life go away from us. >> it is a tough time for loved ones of a volunteer firefighter killed in a crash in charles county. autumn jenkins' boyfriend saw the whole i think in as he followed -- whole thing as he followed her home from dinner. jenkins died in nanjemoy maryland. a truck crossed into her lane and first responders didn't know that the victim was one of their own until they arrived on the scene. >> we had another squad there from the tenth district volunteer fire department and they offered help and i said she's ours we'll take care of her and we did. >> one officer smelled alcohol on the breath of the truck driver. no charges have been filed.

jenkins was 21 years old and had been a member of the nanjemoy volunteer fire department sense she was 16. according to a judge loudoun county public schools did not break the law. a parent took the school district to court yesterday. he told the judge the school board didn't respond to more than 50 requests for information under the virginia freedom of information act. foia. the judge said some requests did not qualify as foia requests and that the parent had not paid the fees associated with that paperwork. three women known as the iron ladies in alexandria are continuing the fight over water front development. they're fighting the process alexandria used to change the zoning along the river. last month, the virginia supreme court ruled against the women and now they're asking the court to rehear the case based on assumptions judges made in their ruling. they say those assumptions were wrong. it's now 5:35 as the weather gets warmer more people are going to be leaving their cars at home and perhaps hopping on

their motorcycles. well, today the maryland motor administration is reminding people to share the road with bikers. they're hosting an event today. more than 70 people were killed riding their motorcycles. pay up or face the consequences. that's the message metro police are sending to people who aren't paying. the problem not only costs metro money it puts employees in harm's way. transportation reporter adam tuss rode undercover as passengers tried to sneak on to the bus, were caught in the act. it only took two stops before one person tried to sneak on the bus, passing himself off as a d.c. student. he was later arrested. metro says when bus operators try to step in, assaults happen. >> the most common is spitting a punch out the door or kick the door glass. >> metro has gone high-tech. the number of people who board buses are being count and if they see a lot of people are boarding and not many fares being paid they'll take action.

new information this morning about the co-pilot accused of take taking down germanwings 9525. he was andreas lubitz initially submitted a medical form saying he had no mental disorders. he then resubmitted the form admitting his treatment for depression. the faa requested a letter from his doctor describing his treatment and his current condition. the license was granted after he provided letters from his

doctors saying he was no longer suffering with depression. construction is no longer underway at two venues being built for the rio de janeiro olympic games. at least for now. the work at a tennis arena is stopped because of health and safety concerns. rio is racing against the clock with only 500 days to go before the start of the summer games. olympic officials say they hope the issues will be resolved by the end of the week. pretty comfortable start to the day. here's tom kierein. i'm sorry, amelia segal. >> you're absolutely fine aaron. temperature right here on the storm team 4 weather deck at 58 degrees. for the most part it's a calm morning, it's dry. but as you're getting the kids ready for school today, what do they need to wear well with showers in the forecast later on today, grab the rain jacket or the small purse umbrella will be fine in the d.c. metro area. the bigger umbrella if you're closer to i-91.

this just in. prison sentences for the militants who attacked a pakistani girl that later won the nobel peace prize. malala yousafzai denied the taliban when she was shot in the face. that was in 2012. she was just 15 years old at the time. an anti-terrorism court has just now sentenced ten men who plotted and carried out that attack to life in prison. she spoke out bravely internationally advocating for the rights of girls to an education. she won the peace prize in 2014. 15 before the hour now. the house is gearing up for a showdown with d.c. republican leaders have agreed to a disapproval vote over an

abortion law. molette green has a look at this brewing battle. molette? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. there's a deadline fast approaching for congressional review of this. conservative house republicans have really been pushing hard to get this vote to happen. and get their disapproval on record. at the same time, we are hearing from d.c. leaders who say once again congress is trying to trample on the rights of the city and its citizens to govern themselves. at issue here is this resolution aimed at stopping a d.c. law from taking place. this law prevents employers from being able to fire their workers who choose to have abortion services or birth control. now, conservatives say this is an issue about religious freedom, but d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton who has always been outspoken about the rights of the city citizens to govern themselves say this is

about a war on women and of course congress trying to trample on the city. now, workers -- this is likely not to go far out of the house vote. the senate not expected to take up this measure. even if it did, president obama would likely veto it. we are live this morning on capitol hill. molette green. back to you. >> thank you. 5:47. it was a narrow miss for a virgin america pilot who reported seeing a drone flying above his plane. the pilot was headed into dallas love field airport and he saw that drone flying 200 feet over the top of them. s that police are trying to figure out who owns the drone. they asked drone operators to use them responsibly. >> if they end up colliding with an airliner it will be similar to a bird strike or potentially worse. and it could do significant damage to the airplane or an engine. >> it is illegal for drones to fly above 400 feet or within five miles of an airport.

leadership this morning. kansas senator pat roberts is taking the helm of the dwight d. eisenhower memorial. he's from eisenhower's home state. the memorial has been delayed for years in part due to a battle over the design. roberts says eisenhower never stopped in the face of adversity and the commission won't either. it's an unforgettable and powerful image, the marine corps memorial in arlington has become a bit weathered over time. and now philanthropist david rubenstein is hoping to change that. he's giving more than $5 million to help restore the bronze, fix cracks and improve landscaping. rubenstein's father was a marine who fought in the pacific. the memorial will remain open during the repairs. news for your health at 5:50. genetic testing has become more popular in recent years and a new survey found 98% of people want to know their genetic risks for dangerous diseases. people are interested in
