fairfax near 50 there. that includes much of loudoun county. prince william and spotsylvania be prepared for a cool morning. then likely you'll need an umbrella for this afternoon. turning summer like next week. next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:11. amelia segal will join us live with your walk to work weather. now a look at the commute this morning. we had an accident on 270. >> that's right. 270 again southbound as you're passing buckeystown pike. right now at this point this morning, it is a little bit slow, but looks like it's off to the right side of the roadway. taking a look at south of there, 109, pretty clear. just seeing the normal slow downs as you kind of turn left through hyattstown. 66 into town, no real problems. and the slowest spot is at dale city nothing happening just some typical volume there this morning. overall a look at prince george's county looking quite good.

had a couple of crashes in prince george's county that have cleared out of the way, so that's great. i'm back at 6:11. i will see you then for weather and traffic on the 1s and with we'll have some travel times for you. the death toll from the massive earthquake in nepal now topping 5500 people. police there say 8 million people have been affected. international aid finally being distributed in remote areas, but it's still not enough. the united nations estimates more than 1.4 million people need food immediately. new this morning we're learning more about a dramatic rescue from a team in our area. kristin wright has more. >> that's right. we have incredible video of this dramatic rescue in nepal. of a teenager involving virginia's very own fairfax county urban search and rescue. they were part of this massive team that helped rescue a teenager boy from the rubble. they worked for six hours using

an excavator, jackhammer. other tools to get to the teenager who was trapped under the rubble in just a small space space. possibly for five days since the earthquake. when they got to him, he was awake and talking. amazingly. eun? >> kristin wright, thank you. 6:03 is your time right now. another night of curfew is over in baltimore. this is a live look outside of baltimore city hall. that's a police presence and a blockade set up there and police are still patrolling the city. they're not wearing riot gear anymore. there will be more protests today over freddie gray's death. demonstrators kept things peaceful yesterday. some people resisted going home when the curfew started. police did not use tear gas this time. officers said some people threw rocks at police. they arrested 16 adults and two minors in the last 24 hours and more than half of the 200 people they arrested are now home. the officers have to charge anyone they arrest within a 48 hour limit.

they could not complete all the paperwork in time. demonstrators took to the streets to demand answers across the country including here at home. police arrested more than 100 people protesting in new york city. people marched in boston, minneapolis and ferguson, missouri, as well. >> we're strong we're marching all night long. >> this is the scene from freedom plaza here in d.c. last night. protesters briefly shot down h street and pennsylvania avenue there. they held up black lives malttter. dupont circle "u" street had to close for protests. in denver, police arrested nine people including one for assault. we've got this video in a few hours ago. you can see the protesters marching outside the denver jail. right behind them police officers in helmets and riot gear. baltimore police will hand over their account of what happened to freddie gray tomorrow. we still don't know what

happened to freddie gray. "the washington post" is publishing one new account from a prisoner inside the van. he said gray was banging against the walls of the van intentionally trying to hurt himself. the prisoner was separated from him by a metal barrier and could not see him. the attorney disputes that he severed his own spinal cord. the report they plan to turn over to the state's attorney we told you about some protests -- actually i want to tell you today in los angeles, the father of michael brown educating some new communities there. what he hopes people will learn from the protests later this morning. it's 5:06. a local mother is expected in front of a judge. a homicide case is expected to

be launched against catherine hoggle. police believe they're dead. hoggle who police have said been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia has a hearing at 9:00 a.m. watch out for street closures along the national mall. your ride to work is clear on 15th street northwest. this as megan mcgrath explains why going home is a problem. >> reporter: that's right. going home could be a problem for folks who take 15th street. that's because the closure will take place after the morning rush hour. it's part of the on going construction at the national museum of african-american history and culture. they have actually requested the road closures in the area so that they can move some of their equipment and crews around to get that construction completed here. now, we have got a couple of closures. the first one gets underway later today. that's 15th street. it is going to be closed between jefferson drive and constitution avenue.

it was a narrow miss for a virgin america pilot who reported seeing a drone above his plane. he was headed into dallas love field airport when he saw the drone 200 feet over the top of him. they tweeted a picture and asked drone operators to use them responsibly. >> if they end up colliding with an airliner it's going to be similar to a bird strike or potentially worse. and it could do significant damage to the airplane or an

engine. >> it is illegal for drones to fly above 400 feet or within five miles of an airport. the faa questioned the mental health of the germanwings co-pilot who crashed the plane on purpose. five years ago, andreas lubitz submitted a medical form saying he had no mental disorders and he resubmitted the form admitting to treatment for depression. the faa requested a letter from his doctor describing the treatment and current condition. the license was granted after he provided letters from his doctors saying he was no longer suffering with depression. members of a volunteer fire department responded to an awful accident in charles county and soon realized the victim was one of their own. autumn jenkins died in a near head on collision on tuesday night. a truck crossed into her lane. jenkins was a volunteer emt with the nanjemoy fire department.

they were devastated when they pulled up to the scene. >> we had another team there and they offered help. she's ours we'll take care of her and we did. >> one officer said he smelled alcohol on the breath of the truck driver. no charges have been filed. jenkins was 21 years old and had been a member of the fire department since she was just 16. 6:18 now. you'll see more and more motorcycles around here as the weather gets warmer. today the maryland motor administration is reminding people to share the road with bikers. about 70 people killed and more than 1,000 injured every year riding their motorcycles. 6:18. local libraries are teaming up at a federal effort to connect low income children with digital content. later this morning, president obama will announce progress on this effort. several libraries in d.c. and howard county are taking part in this program. they will give low income children access to the internet

and thousands of free e books. the president wants to connect 99% of students to high speed broadband internet in the schools and libraries. not as many teachers are leaving the profession apparently. it found that 17% of new teachers left their jobs in the first five years of teaching. that is in stark contrast to previous research that said 50% of the teachers quit. the university professor says the numbers were an estimate and the new numbers are based on a survey. stafford county teachers what i bear the brunt of efforts to close a hole in the budget. the school board has asked for more money for teacher raises and smaller class but the county budget gives the board $2 million less than the board's total request. the schools made up for that by cutting back on the raises and cutting funds to hire more staff. 6:20 now. baltimore issic waking up this

morning after a second night of curfew. this is the baltimore city hall. a few police officers there and the barricade up there. police officers are not wearing riot gear anymore as you can see. the police officers arrested 18 people yesterday. tomorrow they'll give the report on freddie gray's report to the state attorney office. relative calm, that's what "the baltimore sun" is calling the last 24 hours. protests are still going on but mostly peaceful. police arrested 18 people yesterday. one of the sort of odd stories coming out of this, the orioles empty ballpark. >> let's go o's! >> so we told you that the team closed the stadium to fans for yesterday's game and this is what it looked like there. fans had to line up outside the ballpark gates to watch what they could of the game. we also saw pictures on social media of players signing

being handcuffed questioned whether the agency used excess excessive force. today, deputy secretary majorca will testify in front of the homeland security. he is accused of using his former position to help three facing questions about their visas. he is not accused of breaking any laws. the house is gearing up for a showdown with d.c. republican leaders have agreed to a disapproval vote on a abortion law. molette green has a look at this brewing battle. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. conservative house republicans want to try to stop this d.c. law in its tracks or at the very least have their disapproval on the record. now, the d.c. city council passed this measure months ago. here's the break down. it basically stops bosses from targeting workers who use abortion services and birth control measures. now, up against this deadline

the house republicans have agreed to vote on this this week saying this is all about religious freedom. but d.c. leaders have blasted congress once again for meddling. delegate eleanor holmes norton says it basically violates the rights of the 650,000 people who live here and have elected their leaders to speak for them. after this house vote it's not expected to go far beyond that. the senate unlikely to take it up. we are live this morning on capitol hill. at. >> two d.c. council candidates are watching closely as the last votes are counted in a special election. more than 1,000 uncounted provisional ballots will likely decide who wins the ward 8 seat. right now less than 200 votes separate laruby may and trayon white. one of muriel bowser's proteges won the ward 8 seat which was up for grabs in the election. eight of the council members are new or had been on the council

heavier rain back around the i-91 corridor. it's cooler tomorrow summer like temperatures are in the forecast over the next seven days. tom will let you know when those arrive in the next ten minutes. now, melissa, what's the latest? >> breaking news amelia. 270 southbound at 80 you can see in the last couple of minutes the actual problem has cleared out of the roadway here. off to the right shoulder. still though we have some backups and some volume here just building out of frederick because of this issue. probably happened about 20 minutes ago now and we are seeing still some backups, about four miles of slowness as you head southbound on 270. as far as the rest of 270 from germantown to the beltway you're slow. no major problems in virginia. a traffic alert that could leave you stuck in traffic in the coming days. the work being done that will have a street around the national mall off limits. plus a developing story overnight in nepal where another

survivor has been found buried in the rubble. nearly a week after the earthquake. how a local rescue team may

we have scattered showers in the mountains. looking to stay west of us this morning. there's an area of a few sprinkles that are to the south. these are in prince william county into fairfax county. scattered showers around the metro about. >> 270 southbound is slow right now. chopper 4 is over the scene, 270 south at 80 slow out of frederick because of the earlier crash. crash off to the right side of the roadway but it will take you longer than it should. it is now 6:45. another night of curfew is over in baltimore. it was a calmer night. take a live look right now. this is the intersection of north and pennsylvania. that's where the cvs is located where the fires were burning. kind of ground zero for the riots in baltimore when it first began. looks like things are back to normal and traffic is moving. police and national guardsmen are patrolling the area they're not wearing riot gear.

tomorrow baltimore police will hand over their report on what happened to freddie gray to the maryland state's attorney. the report will not be made public at least not by police. however, we are hearing one account of what may have happened when gray severed his spine. another prisoner said gray intentionally tried to hurt himself. that's according to documents obtained by "the washington post." the post says the other prisoner was in the van with gray but was seated separately and couldn't see him. the gray family's lawyer disputes any implication that fray somehow severed his own spinal cord. not everything in the last 24 hours was peaceful though. some protesters resisted going home last night. the police did not use the tear gas, but police arrested 16 adults and two minors overnight. they had to release more than half of 200 people arrested monday. the police couldn't finish all the paperwork within the 48 hour legal limit.

able to free him. and he was possibly trapped for five days. aaron? >> kristin wright thank you. 6:50 later this morning a local mother is expected in front of a judge on child neglect charges. they're pursuing a homicide case against catherine hoggle. her children have been missing since last september and feared dead now. she has a hearing at 9:00 this morning. today, senator bernie sanders is expected to officially announce a presidential bid that makes him the only declared candidate to challenge hillary clinton for the democratic nomination. sanders is an independent from vermont. he is known for fighting income inequality and the influence of the wealthy on lawmakers. clinton remains dominant so far in those polls. the apple watch apparently is not for everybody. the smart watch doesn't work properly if you have a tattoo on your wrist. the watch reads your heart rate by flashing green and infrared

's likely moving -- that's likely moving into the metro area but not until this afternoon. much of prince george's county 40s to low 50s. louden, fairfax, fauquier spotsylvania in the mid 40s. for the commute today, green lights for the morning and midday, but caution for the afternoon as we'll have scattered showers moving through. temperatures in the 50s. might see a little bit of sun.

then cloudy in the afternoon. up near 70. some roads wet as the scattered showers will be moving on through. the pollen count is high. mostly now oak, mulberry and sycamore and ash as well. but it will get washed out of it, some of it tonight and into tomorrow. cloudy and cooler friday and in the 60s. maybe get a sprinkle or a drizzle, not wet all day. then saturday partly near 70. a small chance of a sprinkle. sunday, we begin a summer like pattern that will continue into the first full week of may. may hit mid 80s on tuesday. warm pattern continuing through much of week. still have that issue at 270 southbound at 80 here. you can see the crash off to the right side of the roadway. a little bit of volume coming southbound. could take you a couple extra minutes here this morning. if you're heading southbound on 270 here. look at 66 a little slow opens

up a tad through centerville. but the whole way you're in going about 40 miles per hour. remember to listen to our friends on wtop. lorton road no major problems. and inner and outer loop rolling along nicely. 270 at montrose also pretty good southbound. another traffic alert to tell you about. you will see orange cones blocking off a portion of 15th street by the national mall. that's just the first one to tell you about. news4's megan mcgrath explains how long you have to deal with the work arounds. megan? >> reporter: well good morning. we have two separate road closures. one gets underway tonight. the other is going to continue through the end of next week. we are expecting traffic tie-ups in the area. now, this is part of the on going construction that you see behind me at the national museum of african-american history and
