tone of celebration. but supporters of the gray family say their fight for justice is not over. >> this is a first step not the last. >> and searching through the night. why it could still be hours before we know if anyone was killed in this collapse at the watergate complex. that breaking news is happening in prince george's county. a shooting along ritchie road has sent three people to the hospital. this is video from chopper 4 shot within the last hour. it shows a large crime scene taped off around a strip mall with a heavy police presence. >> we also have a crew on the ground. they are working right now to get more information. we know one of the people taken to a hospital was in critical condition. you can look for any updates on our nbc washington app. also just in new video tonight of celebrations on the streets of baltimore. those celebrations are getting broken up in this last hour. police are enforcing the curfew

there. they are making some arrests near city hall. >> a group gathered there tonight and also in west baltimore near the cvs store on west north avenue. police and national guard troops had advanced on that group around 10:30. >> all of this comes as the six officers charged in connection with freddie gray's death are out of jail. >> they were each released on bond set between $250,000 and $350,000 each. their mug shots were just released. officer caesar goodson there on the left is facing the most serious charge of second-degree murder. he was driving the police van that carried gray when he suffered a spinal injury. >> three other officers have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. officers edward nero and garret miller are charged with assault. we have team coverage of all of this tonight from the rallies to the police and the gray family. we start with darcy spencer who is in west baltimore now. darcy? >> reporter: we're live on pennsylvania avenue.

if you take a look across here this is north avenue. this is the center of the unrest that's been happening here all week this. curfew has been in effect for the last hour and i have to tell you it's very calm. there is still a heavy police presence. take a look over here on the street corner with the national guard and all of this follows a day of protests. >> as night fell on baltimore the celebrations continued. at pennsylvania and north avenue the scene of riots on monday people honked their horns and cheered. the mood in the city has totally changed after these six baltimore police officers were charged in connection with the death of freddie gray. >> conviction. that's what we're looking for. >> reporter: earlier in the day demonstrators took to the streets when news spread of the arrests. >> we're finally getting somewhere, and like they say, it's not a black thing, it's not a white thing. this is an american thing. >> reporter: but many of the

demonstrators are not fully satisfied that the officers are charged. they want to see convictions. >> i would like the unity. it's not really time for a celebration. it's time for us to become moreitted and follow through. >> reporter: this baltimore man carried his young daughter as she marched. >> she's asking questions about why this happened and we had to tell her that the police killed a man for no reason. >> reporter: many uplifted by the numbers of demonstrators and hope for change. >> it is a great step in the right direction for them to even be charged so i mean we just hope for the best. >> reporter: and a lot of people are saying this was simply a first step. they want to continue with these protests. as a matter of fact some are planned this weekend. we should note that everything today, all those demonstrations that we were covering were peaceful. let's go now to chris lawrence who has more on the police and family reaction. >> first and foremost -- >> the state's attorney says

officers had no cause to arrest freddie gray. >> the knife was not a switchblade and is lawful under maryland law. >> reporter: and compounded their error by failing to keep him safe. >> once again, mr. gray was not secured by a seat belt in the wagon. >> and even when gray said he couldn't breathe and begged officers for help. >> at no point did he seek nor did he render any medical assistance for mr. gray. >> reporter: but the fraternal order of police blasted marilyn mosby's decision. >> we're upset by the rush to judgment. >> we're extremely frustrated and shocked by the circumstances that have transpired tied. >> and we have grave concerns about the fairness and integrity of the prosecution. >> reporter: they say the officers will be vindicated. >> no overs injured mr. gray caused harm to mr. gray and they are truly saddened by his death. >> reporter: moebsy is pressing ahead despite calls for an independent prosecutor. >> we have conducted a thorough

and independent investigation of this case. >> reporter: and freddie gray's family called on everyone to respect the family. >> without justice there's no peace, but we -- but let us have peace in the pursuit of justice. >> reporter: family's attorney says they have not said the officers are guilty or innocent. they simply want to see justice carried out in had next step in that case looks to be a preliminary hearing at the end of the month. jim? >> thanks chris. new tonight a man from baltimore is in jail accused of slashing a fire hose during the violence there on monday night. the state fire marshal says greg bailey has been accused of cutting a hose as fire fighters tried to slow down the flames ripping through that cvs store that we've talked about a minute ago. fire investigators say the immediate drop in pressure cassed by that slashing put the lives of fire fighters and bystanders in danger.

the fire marshal tells us that social media helped to identify bailey as their suspect. several protests planned again this weekend in baltimore, we will have reporters on the scene to bring you all the latest developments on air and online. our coverage begins tomorrow morning with news 4 today at 6:00 a.m. you can download the nbc washington app for the latest at any time. >> at this hour construction workers are trying to stabilize a four-level parking garage at the iconic watergate complex in foggy bottom. a large section of it collapsed suddenly this morning. it's possible there is a body buried under tons of rubble but it could be hours before we know for sure. jackie benson joins us live from the scene with the latest on the search there. jackie. >> reporter: doreen more than 12 hours after this happened there's still a lot going on here. take a look. right now it is not safe for rescue fire fighters to go

inside there to try to get to the area where dogs trained to detect human remains and made what officials call a possible alert earlier today. tractor trailer loads of material have been brought in to shore up the damaged building. the work will continue throughout the night until the multi-story parking garage at watergate complex is stable enough for fire fighters to enter and search for a possible victim. this photo taken a few minutes after the collapse shows the roof of the garage which had dirt piled on it as part of a landscaping job under construction. workers scraped how a roughly 40 x 40 foot section of the roof pancaked down through three layers of the garage this morning. photos showed dozens of vehicles that were damaged by tons of falling concrete. part of the complex was evacuated while the damage was assessed. two construction workers received minor injuries. officials say all of them are accounted for. but the garage is open to the public creating the possibility

that if there is a fatality it may be a park customer and many of them arrived after work to find they would need to find an alternate form of transportation home. >> my car is in there and the important thing is that people are safe. they have checked on -- no serious injuries but in terms of the car, i live in rockville and i'll just have to keep checking on it. >> d.c. mayor muirual bowser. >> the operation has transferred from search and rescue to a recovery operation. >> we do not know what caused the collapse but we're told that investigators are focusing in on the large amount of dirt on the roof of the jackie benson news 4. >> thanks jackie. tonight police are trying to figure out how a child was injured inside a car with a

young relative when he was cut. officers responded to the plaza. it happened just before 6:00 this evening and they rushed the boy to the hospital and say he was in serious condition. no adult in that car when they were injured. the director of the district's dna lab -- it was reported that max how can's job on the line after it was reported that the lab suffered from incompetence. the "washington post" is reporting that roger mitchell jr., the city's medical examiner, will take over the lab on an interim basis. prosecutors stopped sending dna evidence to the city's lab earlier this year. >> a resignation tonight from the second highest ranking episcopal leader in maryland. bishop heather cook turned in her resignation and the episcopal diocese of maryland

there's no word tonight on what caused this big fire at a columbus ohio recycling facility. a thick black plume of smoke could be seen for miles this afternoon. thousands of wooden palettes stacked up outside went up like matchsticks, and the fire spread quickly. nearby businesses reported hearing explosions from what they believe were propane tanks. no employees were inside when this fire broke out. >> there is word tonight that b.b. king is very sick. on his website the blues giant posted a message that he's in hospice care at his home in las vegas. b.b. king is of course a legend blues. him and lucille. he's had diabetes for decades but last october he cancelled the final shows of his 2014 tour

after he fell ill. b.b. king is 89 years old now and put him in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame several years ago. >> capital police are responding to a roll call report to say officers left guns in bathrooms at least three times this year. in one incident a boy found a loaded gun in speaker boehner's suite and a report should not have been released to the public but the spokesperson also said that the department takes rules and breeches like this very seriously. a house committee called the incident unacceptable and demanded more information from police. the beach air should smell even freshener ocean city next time you visit. as of today a new no smoking policy takes effect on the boardwalk. beach access ways and in city ways and bus stop shelters. cigars pipes or e-cigarettes. smoking will still be allowed on beach if you're within a designated area.

for the first time in nearly two decades d.c.'s funk parade will march up u street tomorrow. the city is not allowed an event to shut down u street for the past 17 years but tomorrow night from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. people will be allowed to dance and create their own music on that street. there are no floats or cars in the funk parade just people making their own music and moving with the beat. >> sounds like fun, and they shouldn't need to wear those coats and scarves and all that gear. >> we can put them away. not saying we're done with the cool weather just yet. >> why not? >> because i said that before. >> i've said that before. >> the kind of winter it's been but you can put them away for at least a while. i do think you won't need them for at least the next week up to ten days because we have a fantastic weather pattern moving our way. right now a very cool night across our area.

right now hundreds of protesters are marching through the streets of seattle, washing washington in a may day protest. police say about 25 cars have been damaged. some officers injured. several arrests have been made. that's a chase going through that area right now. the may day protests are usually aimed at bringing attention to worker and immigrant right, but death of freddie gray has given the movement a new focus this year. >> again, we will keep you updated on what's going on in baltimore throughow the weekend
