oh, we've got breaking news. royal baby number two is on the way. the duchess of cambridge is in labor. waiting to learn if it's a girl or a boy. >> and in baltimore, protests go from chaotic to celebratory after the announcement of charges in the death of freddie gray. what else we are learning will be different when demonstrators march today. we're off to a cool start with some clouds around first thing this morning. but there's a big improvement in the weekend forecast. stay with us. all the details coming right up. and there could be someone down there. why it could still be hours until we know if anyone was killed at the watergate complex.

first we want to begin with the breaking news from across the pond. the royal baby is on the way. the duchess of cambridge kate middleton is in the early stages of labor this morning. you're looking live at st. mary's hospital in west of london. what you don't see is the row of media staked out there. along with some well wishers and citizens who are watching this play out, their version of great expectations. kate middleton will give birth to the fourth in line to the throne. prince william is by her side this morning, we hear waiting for the birth of their second child. the couple says that they don't know if the baby is a boy or a girl. kensington palace says the birth will be announced in a mod way. they're going to do it on twitter and instagram. >> social media is the thing. you announce your presidency, your babies. it just seems to fit with the hats. today a derby day. >> that's right. it is derby day.

and into the low 60s by 11:00. highs later on today, how about low to mid-70s. i could give you the 100% dry forecast but i'll give you the 99%. one or two random showers possible today. tomorrow looks better than this though. details coming up. >> so you're saying there's a chance. >> there's always a chance. >> thanks chuck. more than a dozen people arrested in baltimore as the city marched for freddie gray. police arrested 15 protesters for violating the city's 10:00 p.m. curfew. baltimore police say they're no longer on tactical alert but the citywide curfew will stay in effect through the weekend. all protests remained peaceful since the announcement gray's death has been named a homicide. the 25-year-old became critically hurt when in police custody and later died. >> all police officers involved in his death are facing criminal charges. take a look at their mug shots

on the screen. cesar goodson on the left is facing the most serious charge of second degree murder. he was driving the police van that was carrying gray when he suffered that spinal injury. then we have three others charged with involuntary manslaughter. they include garrett miller and edward nero here on the top row. they are all charged with assault. all bonded out of jail last night. >> today in baltimore protesters plan to march against police pru brutality. at noon they will start marching towards city hall. a rally will follow the march at 2:00 p.m. and the mood throughout the city has changed from tense to celebratory. darcy spencer spoke to people about what the criminal charges mean for baltimore. >> reporter: the celebrations continued. at pennsylvania and north avenue ryethe scene of the riots on monday the mood has changed.

after these police officers were charged in connection with the death of freddie gray. >> conviction. that's what we're looking for. >> reporter: earlier in the day, demonstrators took to the streets when news spread of the arrests. >> we are finally getting somewhere. and like they say, it's not a black thing, it's not a white thing. this is an american thing. >> reporter: but many of the demonstrators are not fully satisfied that the officers are charged. they want to see convictions. >> it's not really time for a celebration. it's time for now to become more committed and follow through. >> reporter: this baltimore man carried his young daughter as he marched. >> she's asking questions about why this happened. we had to tell her the police killed a man for no reason. >> reporter: many uplifted by the number of demonstrators and hope for change. >> it is a great step in the right direction for them to even be charged. so i mean, we just hope for the best. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4 today.

>> and police arrested freddie gray nearly three weeks ago for carrying a knife. baltimore states attorney says gray never should have been arrested. once inside the police transport van, the officers failed to keep him safe. >> the knife was not a switchblade and is lawful under maryland law. he was not secured by a seat belt in the wagon. >> the police officer's union fired back at the decision to charge those officers. they're calling for an independent prosecutor to review the evidence. >> no officer injured mr. gray caused harm to mr. gray and they are truly saddened by his death. we have grave concerns about the fairness and integrity of the prosecution. >> the central part of this investigation was freddie gray's transportation to that police station. for a detailed timeline of that ride open the nbc washington app on your phone. this morning police need your help solving a triple

shooting in prince georges county. it happened in capital heights. three men were shot there. one is in critical condition. the other two expected to be okay. police say this was not a random attack. if you have any information, call prince georges county police. and today let's take a live look at dulles airport this morning. in just a few hours more than 100 volunteers will take part in an emergency exercise at the airport. the exercise is designed to help in responding to a large scale plane crash. the drill -- and it is only a drill -- will run from 8:30 to noon. it's business as usual for passengers today. if you use yellow line huntington and eisenhower stations will be closed this weekend. there are also be delays on the red, green and orange lines. the silver and blue lines will operate under a normal weekend schedule. head to nbcwashington.com for the full list of changes before you head out this weekend. 6:07. coming up new images of the

[ explosions ] take a look at the scene from a may day protest in seattle. police arrested 15 people. may day is a time for people to rally for workers' rights. this year things got out of hand. police say protesters threw bricks and officers were hurt. 25 cars were damaged. also in seattle, police rescued a man stuck in a basketball hoop. check it out here. kind of odd. police say his ankle was stuck.

got stuck in the net there. someone found a ladder and the police helped bring him down. olympic gold medalist bruce jenner is being sued for his part in a deadly crash in california. jenner was involved in a multi-car crash on the pacific coast highway back in february. jenner rear ended a lexus that crossed into oncoming traffic. that car was hit head on killing the driver. now that woman's stepchildren are suing jenner for wrongful death. there are no specific details on the suit. b.b. king is waking nup hospice care. he says he's at his home in las vegas. he also thanks all his fans for well wishes. king was in the hospital on thursday. he's known for his music and his gibson guitar named lucille. last october he canceled the final shows of his 2014 tour after falling ill. the rock and roll hall of famer played at the national christmas tree lighting five years ago. something will be different

well right now crews are preparing to search through the rubble following a parking garage collapse at the watergate building in the district. teams worked through the night to make sure the structure is safe so search crews can search for possible victims. jackie bensen reports. >> reporter: tractor-trailer loads of material brought in to shore up the damaged building. the work will continue until the multi-story parking garage is stable enough for firefighters to enter and search for a possible victim. this photo taken a few minutes after the collapse shows the roof of the garage which had dirt piled on it as part of a landscaping project under construction. workers described how a roughly

40 by 40 foot section of the garage pancaked down through the garage. photos show dozens of vehicles that were damaged by the tons of falling concrete. part of the complex was evacuated while the damage was assessed. two construction workers received minor injuries. officials say all of them are accounted for. but the garage is open to the public creating the possibility that if there is a fatality it may be a parking customer. many arrived after work to find they need an alternate route home. >> the important thing is people are safe. they've checked no serious injuries. in terms of the car, i live in rockville. i'll have to keep checking on it. >> reporter: d.c. mayor. >> the operation has now transitioned from search and rescue to a recovery operation. >> reporter: jackie bensen news4. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused the

collapse. they're focusing on the large amount of dirt on the roof of the garage. capital police responding to a report that guns were left in the building bathrooms. there are reports of three incidents alone this year. in one incident a young boy found a loaded gun in speaker boehner's suite. a police spokesperson says the report should not have been released to the public but the spokesperson also says they take rule breaches very seriously. the house committee called the incidents unacceptable and demanded more information from police. there are changes to your summer vacation before it starts. you won't be able to smoke on the ocean front. the smoking ban went into effect yesterday. this new rule doesn't just apply to cigarettes. you can't have cigars pipes, even e-cigarettes. smoking will still be allowed on the beach within a designated area. in the day ahead, you can head on over to fedex field for

the redskins draft day party. they will introduce their draft pick brandon shirth. it is free and open to the public. the wizards will take on the atlanta hawks in the eastern conference semifinals. the hawks beat the nets last night. game one with the wiz and the hawks is sunday in atlanta at 1:00 p.m. the wizards won't play at home until game three which is next saturday. first pitch, adam tuss. >> yep. it was right down the plate. last night i threw out the first pitch at the girls softball game at yorktown high school in north arlington. the game raised money for the breast cancer fund for an arlington mom who lost her battle with cancer while raising eight kids. you got to get loose before you throw it. they were telling me to throw it

today fairfax city's new old town square will have its ground opening. been waiting a long time for this. workers put the finishing touches on it yesterday. the park is along main street and university drive. this is next to the old town hall. the festivities are for the whole family and start at 9:00 a.m. >> very cool. online fund raising is becoming a popular way for many of you to pay your way through school. >> it seems rather than taking out huge loans, savvy students are taking to crowd funding websites for help. joe fryer has more on how many students are heading online for that help. >> reporter: for music major shelini henry john it was hard enough dealing with the death of her father in march, she also had to pay her college $5,000 before graduating this weekend. >> i remember myself crying before i'd go to sleep because i did not know how to pay the money for that. >> reporter: her friend

the royal baby is here. her royal highness the duchess of cambridge has given birth to a little girl. she weighs 8 pounds and 3 ounces. we are learning that both mother and baby are doing well. no name though has been released by kensington palace yet. today in baltimore, protesters plan to march against police brutality. at noon marchers will gather at the gilmore homes and march towards city hall. this comes one day after the prosecutor announced freddie gray's death was a homicide. search crews are expected to look through the rumble -- the rubble following a garage collapse. this was at the watergate complex in the district. overnight, crews reinforced parts of the building so crews can search for a possible

we are working to find out more about this case right now. freddie gray's family says the homicide ruling is the first step toward getting justice. during a press conference the family's attorney thanked the state's attorney and her team for their unprecedented courage. freddie gray's stepfather says there must be peace in the pursuit of justice for his son. >> please don't come at all. the last thing that freddie would want is to see the hard-working people of baltimore lose their jobs and businesses because of his death. >> and the family says they were in shock but satisfied when they heard about the charges. the popular fund raising site go fund me has disallowed contributions for the officers charged with freddie gray's death. yesterday the baltimore police union opened an account to raise the legal funds for the six

officers charged. go fund me quickly removed that account. the sites spokesperson released a statement saying quote, go fund me cannot be used to benefit those who are charged with serious violations of the law, end quote. states attorney marilyn mosby is gearing up for the toughest case of her career. just four months on the job, she decided to charge the officers in freddie gray's death. kristen welker spoke with the 35-year-old about the personal and professional challenges that lie ahead. >> reporter: when baltimore states attorney marilyn mosby stepped into the spotlight, she stood on the shoulders of a long line of law enforcement. her mother father grandfather a line of police officers and her decision to follow them. you spoke to your mom today. >> i did. >> reporter: what did she say to you? >> she said she was proud of me. >> reporter: at 35 she is the youngest chief prosecutor of a major american city but her age

has never stopped her. and today she took on her critics. the fraternal order of police. called on her to step aside and appoint an independent special prosecutor. why not appoint an independent prosecutor? >> my husband is a public servant and so am i. he makes the laws. i enforce them. there is no conflict of interest. >> reporter: and mosby insisted even though people have been protesting the death for days she felt no pressure to rush to judgment. >> i'm a prosecutor. my job is to follow the facts and apply them to the elements of the law. >> reporter: but this mother of two young girls says she does feel the trust is broken between the community and police. and that fueled the violent night of protests earlier this week. >> as a mom i was very concerned. this was happening right outside my door. >> reporter: mosby says now she's focused on letting the legal process play out and hopes

concussions, and possible long-term effects of life in the ring. >> so a concussion does not necessarily mean a knockout. a concussion means a brain injury from the impact where you have some changes afterwards. >> reporter: billups says one opponent got a clean shot on him. >> at the moment i didn't necessarily feel pain. when it generally goes down later, you feel it. >> reporter: doctors have more info than ever though the long-term effects aren't entirely clear. >> sometimes the jaw being rattled from the side is what leads to the knockout. >> reporter: when you see that neck snap when you see the boxer stagger, it may mean a concussion but not a knockout. which means the winner fighter could walk away suffering multiple concussions on saturday. >> everyone thinks about it to a degree. i try not to think about it too much just because it kind of comes with the territory. you know? you know what you're signing up for. >> reporter: reporting in northwest d.c., zachary kiesch, news4.

well today thousands of people are getting ready to lace up their shoes and march for babies. it is happening at nationals park. erika gonzalez is going to open up the ceremonies just after 8:30 this morning. they raise money for march of dimes. they help babies get a healthy start. today you can travel the world without even leaving d.c. more than 40 embassies today as part of the passport d.c. embassy tours event. try different cultural foods, view one of a kind art, dance to music from different countries. chuck loves to do that. nepal canceled its participation in the tours because of the deadly earthquake in that country. you know if you don't want to do the embassies i've always said the other way to travel the world in d.c. without leaving d.c. you do have to go to virginia. but go to dulles at 3:00 in the afternoon and you will travel the world with all the international flights coming in there. >> i believe it's called taste of the world in the herndon area. they have a taste of everything
