"saturday night live" with host scarlett johansson. we'll be switching over to the golf channel from nbc. so we'll breaking news at the top at 11:00, our cameras capture police officers arresting a man just after the curfew went into effect at 10:00. right now things are getting a little tense there in baltimore. you're looking at live scenes from chopper 4. the curfew has only been in effect for a little more than an hour and police areing arrests. these clashes come after the peaceful marchs that went on today. darcy is live there for us where are you and what is going on there sn. >> reporter: chris, things

started to turn ugly here around 10:15 to 10:30. we are at the intersection of pennsylvania and north avenues. this is the area where we saw the looting and rioting just on monday night. take a look here just beyond the crowd. there's a police wagon. that is where they are putting some of the protestors who are arrested. let's go to the video. we were here this evening when there was one protestor who was arrested. apparently he was pepper sprayed. let me tell you what happened first. you know the curfew was in effect. and police they told people they had to get off the streets. there's a helicopter circling above telling people you must go home you must go home. there was a crowd over in the corner. and i personally saw bottles being thrown across the intersection. you could hear them smashing onto the pavement. at one point, the crowd started to surge toward police and that's when police went in with the pepper spray. we know pepper spray was deployed. and in this one particular protestor, we know he was hit and was lying down on the

ground. you're seeing that video. he was taken into custody, but he was moaning, they were pouring water over his face. it hurts a lot when you get hit with pepper spray. so i'm sure his eyes were burning, they were pouring water over him and literally dragged him across the street and placed him over here in an area where they were putting other protestors as well. they did tend to him for several minutes over here. and then he was eventually put on a stretcher and then taken to a local hospital. we can tell you that there were several people who were taken into custody here tonight. we don't know if they were involved in any other criminal activity in the bottle throwing or anything like that but we know they were out here past the curfew and police have told folks, if you're out here past the curfew you are subject to arrest. and we are back out here live you can see the crowd here live on the corner where the police wagon is. where they are putting the people who have been arrested so far this evening. a heavy police presence out here

tonight. things seem to be calming down just a little bit right now, chris. >> darcy, all day, folks out there were peaceful even happy. what changed, is this a different group of people out there now. >> reporter: this was a day of celebrations. it felt like a block party if you have been to one. people are out in the streets celebrating, they happy, playing music and chanting. then all of a sudden at 10:30, that's when this large group decided they weren't going to abide by the curfew. we don't know if this was planned or what exactly they were up to but they did sort of surge toward police a couple of bottles were thrown and it got ugly very quickly. >> thank you very much. darcy, great work out there. >> reporter: earlier derek ward

was here in baltimore and it was seen as a victory rally because of the arrests of the six police officers. let's hear now from derek ward. [ no audio ] >> reporter: early on the mood was decidedly less tense than a week ago. but a lot has happened over the days between, including charges against the six police officers allegedly involved in the arrest and death of freddie gray. among the speakers, the uncle of oscar grant who was killed by police in oakland in 2009. that officer was convicted and in jail. >> and he cannot be the only one. baltimore, we have to make it happen here! that's what this is about!

>> reporter: for many in the crowd, it was a personal experience with general law enforcement and the general mood in the city that can lead to incidents like the one involving gray. >> i didn't want to be lynched or castrated. >> reporter: he looked for respite in charm city. >> i found more in baltimore city than in northern atlanta. >> reporter: there was a lot of togetherness in this crowd. still the police presence was highly visible, though they too, seemed more relaxed amid objections to their presence. >> we don't need any more army men in our streets. we don't need any more ak-47s in our streets. we don't need any more riot police. >> reporter: but they have become a mainstay in a city under a curfew. one young speaker told the crowd policing should come from within the community itself and without arms or uniforms. >> and we have to learn how to teach our children to love themselves to do positive things and be positive people. >> reporter: the rallies and the marchs are front and center now.

there are still questions about freddie gray's death and what should happen even after those answers come. >> getting people out to vote they are pushing for legislation that's really going to make some long-term change. >> reporter: in baltimore, derek ward news 4. >> thank you, derek. in maryland governor larry hogan is calling for tomorrow to be a day of prayer and peace. he's going to attend morning services in baltimore at a church called saint peter claver. we'll be following the developments and invite you to stay with news 4 for continuing coverage on those protests. we're also following a developing story in new york city. tonight a plain closed police officer is in critical condition after someone shot him in the head. this happened earlier in the night in queens. the officer and his partner were talking to the suspect when someone ran up and shot him. back here at home work crews called it a a night after sifting through the water of the

parking garage. even though the firefighters are gone the street closures are still in place on montgomery avenue. they sent recovery teams to help search for potential victims and a cadaver dog discovered a possible hit inside the complex. a renown doctor dedicated his life to helping ebola patients and then he himself contracted the deadly virus. dr. sheikh omar kan had ties to maryland and he was remembered at a ceremony in new carolton. he was working with ebola patients in sierra leone and died last year. his family lives in prince george's county. >> i said you know jesus and you're helping the people. >> the compound is trying to raise money for health care workers who have contracted ebola. the virus has killed more than

kate middleton, prince william and their baby girl are back at kensington palace tonight. prince george has a new baby sister but the world is still waiting to find out her name. now the world has only spent about 12 hours at the hospital 12 hours. then again, most moms don't have a nurse, nanny and full staff waiting for them at home. nbc's kelly collbiet has more on the gripping frenzy right now. >> reporter: prince william, duchess kate and their newborn baby girl are here at kensington palace. this all happened in the span of just 12 hours. the duchess kate was brought to the hospital by prince william earlier this morning london time about 6:00 a.m. just two-and-a-half hours later a princess was born. >> it's a girl! it's a girl!

>> it's a girl! it's a girl! and it's fantastic. >> reporter: william was said to be at kate's side for the birth and kensington palace tweeted out the news announcing a healthy baby girl 8 pounds 3 ounces. the princess of cambridge, fourth in line to the throne. >> it's good news that we have a daughter born to a senior member of the royal family. and i think they are going to love every minute of it. >> reporter: third in line to the throne prince george made an appearance today as well. prince william bringing his oldest son to the hospital to meet his little sister. he waved to the crowds before going in with the help of his father of course. the family will stay here at kensington palace for the next couple of days before settling in in their country home in amber hall 100 miles north of london. and we could hear before that we could hear the name of the new princess. will it be alice, charlotte, elizabeth or victoria? the answer could come as early

before this thing started, a lot of the experts were saying the rangers are going to take this in four five games. >> they definitely are rethinking that. a lot of people are rethinking their picks. the capitals already took this away from the rangers after the thrilling win in game one. and after that the coach knew his team had to come out with a sense of urgency. the capitals may have waited too long to finally get going today. alex ovechkin led the way in game one. another solid performance by ovi, but less than a minute the rangers working the puck up the ice. settling it down to find a teammate braden hope is there for the save of chris cryder. just 30 seconds into the game the capitals trail by one. third period now, the caps down 2-1. marty st. louis spins and somehow gets to derek broussard.
