>> thank you, tom. we're following a develop story right now. police are on the scene of a deadly shooting, it happened on ridge road near "c" street in southeast. megan mcgrath has more. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, eun. police could certainly use some help in trying to figure out who pulled the trigger in this murder that happened here in southeast early this morning. you can see behind me we still have police on the scene. they have got this entire grassy area as well as a parking lot encircled with police tape. keeping people away. investigators are expected to return here to the scene a little later on this morning to continue collecting evidence here. now the call came in just after midnight. the report of a shooting here in the 300 block of ridge road. when officers arrived on the scene that's when they found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds and that victim has died. no word on -- no information on a lookout or a suspect description. and at this point, no arrests have been made.

anyone with information you're asked to call police. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath, thank you. and new this morning a man is in critical condition in montgomery county. county police say a car hit him in germantown last night. the crash happened on route 355 between the fox chapel and middlebrook village shopping centers. detectives say he was crossing the street there. >> 6:02 right now. for the first time in days people in baltimore are not waking up under a citywide curfew. the maryland national guard will also begin pulling out of the city today. it was one week ago today that rioters looted and burned businesses in the city that caused the mayor to implement that curfew. no one allowed outside after 10:00 p.m. since that violent night protests have remained peaceful. the violence was a response to freddie gray's death. the 25-year-old was critically hurt while in police custody. many say it's important to still push for change. maryland governor larry hogan

dubbed yesterday a statewide day of prayer and healing. the governor went to church in west baltimore. the city's mayor toured mondawmin mall. the city said the worst is over, but there's still work to be done. coming up we'll have a live report from nbc's tom costello in baltimore with how leaders plan to keep the peace. today a new panel will begin looking at the alcoholic beverage law enforcement activities. governor terry mcauliffe created the panel after the controversial arrest of university of virginia student in march. cell phone video capture abc agents holding down martese johnson. johnson somehow received severe cuts on his forehead. mcauliffe has ordered retraining of the agents. download the washington app, as soon as we heard from two gop hopefuls expecting to say they'll run for president in 2016, ben carson will make his

6:14. breaking news in arlington that could affect your try to work this morning. police closed columbia pike between green breyer and frederick streets because of downed wires there. it could be eight hours before this is all cleaned up. news4's kristin wright is in arlington now working to find out what brought the wires down. you can follow melissa mollet for ways to get around that mess. a developing story in wisconsin. at least four people are dead after a shooting on a bridge. look at this new video just in. one of the four killed is the gunman. right now one person is in critical condition. at this point police say the shooting appears to be a random act of violence. and chaos outside of an event showcasing cartoons of the

prophet muhammad in texas. >> police shot and killed two men after those men opened fire on a security guard at the event there. nbc's jay gray is live in garland, texas, with more on the police presence at this event. jay, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the investigation continuing here right now. garland police on the scene as well as the fbi. in fact, that white van behind us is an fbi evidence van. they are out in full force here, helping in this investigation as it continues. here's what we know at this point. two men pulled up to this event. it was a free speech event that featured a contest, a cartoon contest using the image of the muslim prophet muhammad. $10,000 first prize for the best cartoon using that image. also other images displayed. these two men pulled up right as this event was supposed to end around 7:00 in the evening and jumped out of the vehicle they were in. opened fire, hit a garland school district guard. he was injured, hit in the ankle. he is okay.

went to the hospital for about two hours, was treated and released. and is at home now and resting. the search continued here throughout the night and included the bomb squad with the robotic trackers that went in, looked for evidence inside the car of any type of explosives. we did overnight hear three, perhaps four blasts here. there's been no explanation to this point and likely won't be for some time as to what was. we know that this investigation does continue into the two men and why they were here. that's the latest here in garland, texas. back to you now. >> thank you. a new york city police officer in a medically induced coma right now after he was shot in the head. a 35-year-old man charged with the attempted murder here. he's accused of shooting that officer in the head. you can see some video from his appearance here. he is being held without bond right now.

police say two officers planned to question the man in queens on saturday when he fired a gun into the car hitting one of the officers. it's 6:17 and the day ahead a state department worker is expected back in a fairfax county courtroom. daniel rosen is charged with soliciting a child for sex. fairfax county police said he had a series of online exchanges with an undercover detective in the child exploitation unit. rosen is the director of counterterrorism. his security clearance has been suspended and is on administrative. he faces separate charges for voyeurism and stalking in the district. we know the name of two people who died in charles county. derek colquitt and jeri whorton slammed into a pickup truck yesterday. they were riding a motorcycle which then burst into flames. at least four cars and a bike all took some damage from that

crash. i'm angie goff at the live desk with in happening right -- with this happening right now. we want to take you live to a brushfire. this is out in new jersey where firefighters are battling this brushfire. this is in the town of pemberton which is near philadelphia. we know that the national weather service recently warned the state of new jersey and their residents about increased forest fire risks. that's because these they've been dealing with a -- they've been dealing with a lot of conditions that are spreading the brushfires very quickly, prompting the weather service to issue that throughout the region. for now, the brush is still burning and the firefighters still trying to get it under control. right now, live pictures out of pemberton, new jersey. back to you. >> thank you. 6:18. you may want to give yourself some extra time to get around the watergate complex in the district up. parts of virginia avenue northwest closed right now because of a garage collapse there. this picture was sent out on twitter saying that the crews

stabilized that structure over the weekend.ey didn't find anyone in the rubble. a cadaver dog detected something in the rubble. two workers were hurt this. hope and heart break in nepal as search crews continue to comb through rubble eight days after the earthquake there hit. three people were pulled alive from the rubble. in a small town you knowoutside the capital, people were found. the entire town was wiped out. so far, 7,200 people confirmed dead. customs inspections are slowing down supply deliveries to earthquake victims in nepal. after the quake, officials eased some of the restrictions but runway damage forced some planes from landing. and now a bottleneck is being created in the customs there. a sobering new report on the number of sex assaults taking place in the military. kristen jillen brand said the number is far greater than the

pentagon has reported publicly. gillibrand said women are especially vulnerable. sex assaults are only reported within rank and file military members. two people face charges connected with the bridgegate scandal in new jersey. a former staff member of the governor's office and the former director of the port authority are set to be arraigned on nine federal charges. a third person pled guilty last week to two counts of conspiracy in a plea deal. the three are accused of closing lanes on the george washington bridge for political reasons in 2013. investigators found no evidence new jersey governor chris christie was involved. 6:20 now. a huge storm system in new zealand is causing rough surf all the way in california. take a look at the massive waves here. 14 foot waves pounded the coast near newport beach this afternoon.

lifeguards issued warnings to swimmers but many still went into the water as you can see. lifeguards rescued a couple dozen people after they were pulled in by a strong rip current. well, i had a chance to meet the district's top educators this week. it was an honor to emcee the first ever d.c. educator awards. the office of the state superintendent organized this event. these kids were so precious, i'm telling you. they read some letters about why teachers are so important. the 2015 teacher of the year one of the people recognized at the convention center friday night. and you know, you just can't -- you can't say thank you enough to the teachers who are literal literally building the future. >> we have sweet little kids talking about the teachers and you as the emcee. the best night ever. >> the kids are nice. 6:21 our time right now. let's go to tom kierein and check the forecast. >> teachers, angels from heaven, and this morning looking at the

emirates when a passenger said it would explode. at this point, no one was hurt. doctors say they have seen a surge of patients come to the emergency room since the affordable care act started. the new survey said 30% saw a large increase of e.r. visits and that's the exact opposite of what the white house expected. the goal of the affordable care act was to get more people insured so they would see a primary care doctor instead of heading to the hospital. doctors blame a lack of primary care physicians to take on all these new patients. well, it's time as chuck mentioned sunny and warm today. the dermatologists are reminding us to wear sun block to protect our skin. dermatologists are creating awareness about skin cancer. here are a few things to do to protect yourself. use an spf of at least 30. reapply ever two hours and ladies spf in your makeup is

at 6:30, breaking news in arlington. crews are working carefully to remove wires that fell on to columbia pike. >> that road is now shut down and news4's kristin wright is live along columbia pike. any progress right now? >> reporter: yeah. we actually have a better view point now than we did before so let me show you. if you look right behind me, we're closer than we were before so you can see right here where a tree has apparently come down on top of a power pole here. and brought down several wires. so quite a mess. most of the morning columbia pike is going to be closed we're told. in fact, one of the police officers said to me this is an all day affair. several wires down, tree brought it down. columbia pike is closed between south greenbrier and south frederick. dominion, virginia power you can see here is trying to fix this situation. we are told no outages reported so far. police are rerouting traffic

another warm afternoon too up into frederick, martinsburg, cumberland each location reaching the low 80s by mid afternoon. your bus stop what to wear forecast is coming up nextd]q weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:41. back to you. >> thank you. 6:33. today a d.c. police officer will be on trial for a second time. prosecutors say samson lawrence attacked his wife and tried to kill her two years ago. they say he threatened her with knives, sprayed lysol in her face and beat her with a metal lamp. he was first on trial last summer. but the jury could not reach a verdict. also today we expect a verdict for prince george's county officer accused of assaulting a teenager. charles pickard struck a student at suitland high school before arresting him two years ago. defense lawyers could call members of dzhokhar tsarnaev's family to the stand. they're hoping to convince the jury not to sentence him to death. last month the jury found tsarnaev guilty on all counts for the boston marathonbombing.

if even one juror is against the death penalty tsarnaev will face life in prison instead. later today students at the university of maryland and college park can see the movie "american sniper." following a backlash there, the college republicans and democrats will show the movie tonight at 6:00 at the theater. there will be a panel discussion after the film. originally the student entertainment group postponed it because of concerns. the muslim student association said the movie is anti-muslim. today firefighters in montgomery county are trying to find out how a fire started an a elementary school. you can see some of the damage done to one of the portable classrooms at goshen elementary. the county fire department said that fire did about $10,000 in damage. today president obama will reveal what he plans to do after leaving the white house. the my brothers keeper initiative is gking -- is becoming a nonprofit organization. that allows the president to continue helping men of color through the organization after he leaves office.

a little slow. it should be about 12. listen to our friends from wtop when you hop in your car for the latest on traffic. so maybe you have noticed gas prices are creeping up again. jumping really. aaa says the price at the pump has gone up about 58 cents since the beginning of the year. right now, polices are surging ahead of the summer driving season. virginia drivers paying at least -- at least around here are paying about $2.40 a gallon for regular unleaded and maryland is at $2.60 and d.c. is at $2.71. prices are going up, this is still the lowest prices have been around this time of year in the last five years. we are finally getting some warm weather around here. don't you love it? but transportation departments are still digging out of a huge budget hole caused by our harsh winter. more than 20 states spent more than $1 billion to get rid of all that snow that fell earlier this year.

peaking in the mid 80s. aaron? >> tom, thank you. new details on that developing story we have been watching in texas this morning. police shot and killed two men there after they opened fire on a security guard in a dallas suburb. this happened outside an art competition that featured pictures of the prophet muhammad. those types of depictions are incredibly offensive in that -- to islam. this morning we are hearing from -- for the first time from people who had to be evacuated after the shots were fired. >> people were kind of milling around the stage. and that's when we knew something happened. police came in. they were rushed off and the doors were locked and we could not hear anything inside. or see anything. >> the security guard who was shot is expected to be okay. organizers say they plan the event to make a stand for free speech. police say they were ready for violence to break out. right now the maryland

national guard is demobilizing in baltimore. a citywide curfew has been lifted. nbc's tom costello is live in baltimore now with how leaders plan to keep the peace now that the restrictions are gone. good morning. >> reporter: hey, eun, good morning to you. there's a real sense here in baltimore that the city may have finally turned the corner after the violence that we saw over the course of the past ten days or so. really over the weekend. we saw really very peaceful demonstrations, hundreds of thousands of people participating. at times it was almost a carnival-like atmosphere. but these people also insist that they're determined to hold the city and the police department accountable for the death of freddie gray. of course, as you know, six police officers have now been charged in connection with his death. the totals here are rather staggering. nearly 500 people arrested over the course of the past ten days or so. 113 police officers injured. and 200 businesses lost. the majority of them minority

owned and the majori them say they don't have insurance. there's a lot of picking up the pieces to do here in baltimore but a real sense here that this community may finally put it all behind them in terms of the worst of the violence. we have had several days of relatively peaceful evenings. no curfew last night and no arrest to speak of last night either. there's concern i will tell you in some legal circles that the prosecutor, the state prosecutor may have overreached in charging all of these officers. there are discussions and talk within the legal circles and also prosecutorial circles over whether they can prove the case against these six officers. they have a court date at the end of the month. back to you eun. >> tom costello, thank you. be sure to check out his full report on the "today" show. today, a new panel will look at virginia's alcoholic beverage control department's law enforcement activities. governor governor terry mcauliffe created this panel after the controversial arrest of a

student in march. captured holding down martese johnson. johnson received the severe cut on his forehead. mcauliffe has ordered a state police investigation and retraining of abc agents. we are staying on top of a developing story in the district at 6:49. police look into the deadly shooting in southeast. this happened on ridge road near "c" street. news4's megan mcgrath has the latest. >> reporter: well, aaron, you can see behind me that police are still limiting the ability to bet to the area. we have got police tape cordoning off this parking lot as well as this grassy areas. officers still on the scene trying to piece together what happened and who pulled the trigger. it was after midnight when the 911 call came in for a report of shots fired. when officers arrived at the 300 block of ridge road that's when they found the victim. he is described as an adult male and had died as a result of the injuries. no description of the suspect or suspects involved. and so far, no arrests in this

the road is closed and it could be shut down all day. news4's kristin wright, what's going on? >> reporter: well, dominion and virginia power is trying to fix it but it will take a long time. you can see where the problem is. trees came down on top of this power line. quite a mess. several wires down. so columbia pike between south greenbrier and south frederick will be closed with we're told for a long time. several hours. again, dominion, virginia power is here trying to fix this situation. we're told no outages at this point. but if you're driving this way, this morning, you want to give yourself some extra time because again columbia pike closed between south greenbrier and south frederick right now. police are rerouting traffic but give yourself some extra time. melissa is here now with a look at how to get around this mess. >> and the best way to get around this mess is going gob the alternate of south george

montgomery county. police there say a car hit him on in -- in germantown. happened on route 355 between the fox chapel and middlebrook village shopping centers. he was crossing the street there. a big metro project starts today that will be an inconvenience for many of you. the west entrance to the van ness entrance is shutting down. this is the entrance next to udc and the starbucks. the current escalator is nearly 35 years old and the entire project is expected to take about three years. 6:55. four things to know. students at the university of maryland can see the movie "american sniper" on campus tonight. the university group originally postponed that screening because of concerns the movie was anti-muslim. and in a few hours the law enforcement agencies will be investigated. developing in texas, police
