building in langley park. they fulled four other people out of there as well. crews are still on the scene near rigs road and university boulevard. darcy spencer is live outside the complex what are you seeing and hearing out there? >> it's still a very active scene. i want to show you where the fire started. look up there, that top level window a firefighter is still up there. that appears to be where there was the most damage. i also want to show you on the other side of this building there's a ladder here. this is where i'm told those five people were rescued from the building including that baby. i'm told the baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution. they want to make sure the baby did not suffer smoke inhalation. apparently the stairwell was so smoky inside they could not get out that way. so they went over to this other part of the building firefighters were able to get them and get them to safety.

four other people brought down by ladder did not have to go to the hospital. that's good news here. that baby suspected to be okay. they want to make sure the small child is not hurt. these flames broke out about 8:30 this evening. firefighters say there was heavy fire in the building when they got here. let's hear from one resident who saw firefighters rescue that small child. >> they start, like breaking out all the windows on the third floor. and the firemen, he came down with a baby like -- looked like two weeks old or so put her on the ground and then i think they -- he put a mask over here and then they took her away to the hospital. the mom came down on the ladder too. >> reporter: that was a very dramatic moment for that woman. she does not live in this building but said she was in tears watching the other residents here her neighbors.

many of them lost everything here tonight. firefighters are trying to figure out exactly where and how the fire started. they have not come up with a damage estimate yet. the blaze is out now but they're making sure they get everything shored up and there are not any hot spots. chris, back to you. >> thanks. a drunk man made his way into a dorm at the university of maryland and inappropriately touched a female student. investigators say he went into three different rooms early friday morning. the doors were closed but not locked. when the young woman woke up the man ran off. last night police arrested a suspect. he is facing burglary and sex assault charges. prince george's county police want to talk to anyone who saw a hit and run this morning. the victim was walking along branch avenue when a car hit him. he suffered critical injuries. the driver stopped briefly and then took off. he was in a dark four door sedan. one person is dead and others are missing after multiple tornadoes touch down in

texas. tonight heavy rain is making it very hard for rescuers and others to assess the damage in the small town of cisco. there's also a flash flood warning in effect before all is said and done the storms could dump up to three inches of rain. it's a lot calmer here. tomorrow is mother's day. a lot of folks are wondering if mother nature will allow us to enjoy the day outside. we look at what's in store. >> well tomorrow is going to be very similar to what we saw today. we'll start off with clouds fog, some drizzle. then the clouds break up as we head into the afternoon hours. so here's what you can expect to start mother's day. i do want to say happy early mother days to the moms out there. starting off with clouds a mild start. temperatures around 69 degrees. as we get into the midmorning hours, any fog or drizzle is going to come to an end by 8:00

two-way traffic on the eastbound side. we spoke to one driver stuck in that traffic who barely made it to the gas station in time. >> i was in the right hand lanes with about 20 other people probably in the process of running out of gas and waiting. luckily there was an exit 1.2 miles away that took me 40 minutes to get to. >> he had a good attitude about it. nobody was seriously hurt. crews used a plane to flip the truck back over. if that didn't cause enough problems on route 50 a crash in anne arundel county injured three people including a maryland state trooper. he pulled someone over for a traffic violation when a third driver slammed into the trooper's car. a helicopter airlifted all three victims to baltimore's shock trauma center. the trooper was seriously injured. fairfax county search and rescue team could be back home monday night. here is virginia task force one repairing the only functioning library in kathmandu.

they're with another team from los angeles. since the earthquake hit last month, the fairfax team has gone into dozens of buildings and embassies looking for survivors and making sure the structures are safe. howard university's class of 2015 graduated today. howard granted a number of honorary degrees today including a doctor of humanities to morgan freeman. he has been acting for 44 years and has used his celebrity status to help a lot of charitable causes like raising money for the victims of hurricane katrina. up next a taste from across the pond without leaving the city. we'll take you to the uk celebration. a top correct shups department official remembered for her service and dedication. tonight she takes her place with other fallen officers. and mothers from around the

mothers from all over the country came from d.c. to protest police brutality. a lot of them had children killed by police. the million moms march took them from capitol hill to the steps of the justice department. >> they saw my son laying on the ground. they snuck up on him. he hit him eight times with his baton. that's why he took it from him, to stop him from hitting him.

law enforcement from around the area gathered today to honor fallen corrections officers. they focused on carolyn cross a high ranking corrections official who was murdered in her arlington home last year. derrick ward was at the wreath wreath laying ceremony. >> reporter: a bell tolls and a rose is laid amid solemn repose in this ceremony in honor of fallen corrections officers carolyn cross was remembered.

>> she started as a corrections officer. even the next 35 years ascended the ladder. >> reporter: it would take her to the top of the field. a warden deputy directorship of the district's department of corrections. cross was found dead in his arlington apartment last september. >> on the very morning that deputy director cross was murdered she was on her way to attend a national institute of corrections forum for executive women in corrections. >> reporter: while the trial of the man charged in that murder resulted in a hung jury and a mistrial the ceremony was about her life not her death. the current corrections director said cross would have certainly attended the ceremony honoring all fallen corrections officers. >> adding her name to the wall will serve to honor the beloved ms. cross. >> the correctional workers we pay tribute today died protecting and serving the people of the united states. >> reporter: derrick ward news

4. motorcycles roar past fire stations across montgomery county today as part of a tribute to the county's first fire chief. tom carr died of parkinson disease and organizers started the chief's ride to honor his contributions. money was raised for a non-profit called firefighters with parkinson disease. >> boy, i tell you, wonderful as it was today, people would sure love another day like that for mother's day? >> tomorrow is going to be similar. starting off with clouds, as we get into the afternoon hours, clouds break up. it's not a perfect ten, but i think we'll take it. >> an eight or nine will do just fine. >> will be okay for mother's day, but there is a chance of a shower or thundershower south of washington. but most if not all of your day will dry. keeping that small chance of a
