chance of shower and thunderstorm later today, angie. more on that in a little bit. >> thanks. days the first day of police week in washington. officers remember those who died on duty. it starts with a log ride this morning. news 4's derrick ward at rfk stadium where officers are getting ready to get on their bike and ride. good morning, derrick. >> reporter: good morning. indeed they are. you can hear the telltale sign behind me. this is the scene here. it's an annual tradition in washington and grows every year. for the past 20 years it's been going on. it's the start of police week. there are riders from all over. some are in uniform. some are in civilian clothes. make are police officers and some aren't. it's all a matter of bringing this community together as we hear from one of the organizers. >> the community involved event, not just law enforcement. we welcome, you know, because we have families that come out and

support us. then through the washington community it's important because they come out and give support to law enforcement families. they appreciate the job that we do. >> of course, you know this all happens against the backdrop of strange relations between police family and their general commune. they see this as just another effort of evening those relations and humanizing. what this ride does kicks off from here to 10:30. they will ride to national law enforcement officers memorial where there will be a wreath laying ceremony. this is a kickoff of activity police week in the nation's capital. at rfk, news 4. >> very meaningful week ahead. thank you, derrick. the log ride is the first of several events to remember officers. also a 5k happening today. tomorrow agencies will come together at a law enforcement memorial service. then on tuesday another bike ride will raise money for

national law enforcement memorial fund. officers will hold a candlelight vigil wednesday night and wreath laying that will happen on friday. developing in mississippi this morning, police now say that they have arrested a third person for killing two police officers. >> yeah a woman and two men are now in custody for that g. it happened in hattiesburg, mississippi in the southern part of the state. you can see the police officers friends and family gathered in this video here. they are at the hospital hugging and comforting each other. the officers were 25 and 34 years old. well right now police are investigating a homicide in southeast. police responded to reports of a shooting. this is just after 2:00 this morning on north capitol street near o street. >> police save an infant. looking to see how the fire started.

four people and a baby had to be rescued from the top story of a three-story apartment building. firefighters say the smoke and heat prevented the people from using the stairs so they had to wait on the balcony. the baby what's taken to the hospital to be checked out and is expected to be okay. >> a man facing charges a dorm then touched her. he then ran off after she woke up and screamed. it happened early friday morning. colby was drunk at the time. dorm residents did let the guy into the building. he was able to get into three different rooms because the doors were not locked. colby facing charges for sex offense, assault, and burglary. today prince the artist prince will headline a special rally for peace in baltimore. the singer released a new song about the city and the recent

after she said her iphone burst into flames. nbc's george spencer tells us what the girl said happened and how she and her mom are reacting. >> i woke up at the normal time. >> reporter: axest said it was a typical school morning. her iphone 5c clearly damage the top end melted open was tucked in the back pocket of these jeans. before she ever arrived for class, she said that phone burst into flames leaving her with these second degree burns. >> it hurts really bad. >> you're still in pain. >> alexis tells us the phone had been working normally. during her walk, alexis tells us she heard a crackling sound coming from the phone but wasn't until she got here directly across from the school that she said she noticed smoke actually coming from her back pocket and pulled out a phone that was on fire.

quarter size hail. forecasters say more heavy rains are on the way today. over in colorado storm chasers captured these incredible pictures of a tornado hit the ground in a rural area near cheyenne. there are no reports of injuries or serious damage. take a look at this one here. a rare moment of nature's fury and beauty all captured at the very same moment. this video of a rainbow appearing just as a tornado spins in the air over colorado. no injuries here but some unforgettable takes to see there. >> you don't see that often. >> definitely not. kind of rare to see a fully formed tornado but to see it with rainbows as well something people in colorado will not forget any time soon. >> i look at video, whenever you go to school visit, talking about severe visit, tornado, hurricane or rainbow -- now here is video. >> that would be great. so today overall not going to be

the other on k street northwest near 31st street. officers are looking for a woman in her 20s they say is a suspect in the case. >> prince william county enjoying 20-year low when it comes to crime. police department 2014 crime report showed crime fell 2%. last year marked sixth in a row as overall crime declined. the only one that ticked up aggravated assault rising 37%. arson crimes went up in the county in 2014. d.c. metro getting by quote, paycheck to paycheck right now. they will soon need a bailout from local government. that is according to "washington post." metro up against the clock trying to repay $230 million by june. part of the problem. a federal agency stopped automatically paying metro grand dollars because it questioned how the money was spent. loan stinks may help solve the issue for now. metro officials briefed d.c.

you're watching "news 4 today." >> today is a special day for moms especially you new ones out there. >> one hospital trying a new method to make having a baby as fun as possible. maureen kinsler tells us why they are using laughing gas in the delivery room. >> linda nguyen said she found the pain of childbirth no excruciating no yoga breathing or birthing class could make her feel ready. >> it's something you can't be ready for. >> when she delivered her second baby she wanted something like an epidural. >> i wanted to fully experience

the delivery. i knew with an epidural i wasn't going to be able to do that. >> that's when midwives at the medical center suggested she try nitrox oxide or laughing gas, an old anesthetic most people know from the dentist chair not the hospital. new in the united states but commonly used for labor and delivery in europe and canada. >> it's really nice because if you don't like it you can stop and the effects of it stop very quickly prof the director of the mid wife program at the hospital. here she's showing us how women use the nitrous oxide. they take the mask and decide when to breathe in gas. each lasts a minute compared to an epidural which can take hours to wear off. >> it's used during the contraction. when the contraction goes away you stop breathing it the effects wear off.
