5:00 hour. beltway at colesville everything looking good. don't have any major issues right now. keep your fingers crossed for that. 5:01 a lot of you are worried about making it to work on time this morning. if you have to take metro. yesterday was a long day filled with problems for a lot of you. late last night, track problems at metro center shut down the station just as the wizards game was letting out. earlier today there were major issues on the red, blue and silver lines. we're working to get in touch with metro officials to find out how things are going this morning. megan, how are things looking now? >> we're waiting for that official update at metro. we still have the gates closed. i'm at the g street g and 11 street entrance to metro center. about the last ten minutes or so they actually turned on the escalators but they have not

yet opened the gates and this station is supposed to open at 5:00 a.m. so what's going to happen here this morning? we're still waiting to see. d.c. government put out an alert last night saying that things were wrapping up and that the power outage situation was under control, but we are still waiting to see what if any, kind of impact we're going to have here this morning. yesterday was just a terrible day for folks who take metro. there were a variety of issues at a variety of different stations that happened through the course of the day. the metro center closing last night being one, but it was much much worse during the morning rush hour commute. that's when they had a situation of smoke in a tunnel between ross lynn and foggy bottom. they had to suspend service on the orange blue and silver lines while they tried to figure out that situation and get the smoke out of the tunnel. so that of course led to major, major problems during the height of the rush hour. it took them three hours to get things back to normal. we had crowded platforms,

stations a lot of confused people. folks trying to get on to shultz buses which were also very crowded. it was a rough, rough rush hour for people. the hope here is that today is going to be a better day, but we are still waiting to see the status of metro center and, of course we'll keep a close eye on it and let you know. fingers crossed but it's just unclear at this point. back to you guys in the studio. thank you. new video into the live desk, this after another major earthquake strikes nepal. at least four people are dead and take a look at this video. you can see many are still in a panic in the streets after a 7.3 magnitude quake hit near the chinese border. this is between kathmandu and mount everest. two other tremors followed. a 5.6 and a 6.3. damage reports right now very difficult because so much was destroyed when that huge earthquake rocked the nation back in april. more than 8,000 people died in that tragedy and more casualties

expected with this latest earthquake. we're going to break back in with any updates. it is 5:04 this morning. lawyers for former virginia governor bob mcdonnell head to federal court to fight his corruption viks d conviction. the hearing is expected to last about an hour. he was sentenced to two years in print for trading political influence for more than 16$165,000 in p gifts. d.c. police are looking for two persons of interest. they are calling it an assault with intent to kill. a reward is being offered for information about people in this video. lawyers for four of the six accused gang members on trial for killing a virginia volunteer officer asked the judge to declare a mistrial. the group is charge with killing kevin quick last february. yesterday, an fbi agent told the

court that one of the defendants obtained a list of jurors. that person allegedly contacted at least one of the jurors relatives. we'll find out whether the judge declares a mistrial shortly after court resumes at 8:30. if convicted, they could get life in prison. the national forum on youth violence prevention starts about 8:00 a.m. this focuses on reducing violence among kids through conversations about bullying gang violence and mental health. loretta lynch and earnie duncan are speaking. in baltimore, the u.s. small business administration giving out low interest low to help rebuild the worst damaged parts of the city. some orioles players are excited to be back home. the team returned to camden yard delivered a win in front of 20,000 fans last night. the o's had to play a game in

a south carolina sheriff's deputy is thanking his lucky stars this morning. he escaped a terrifying head-on crash with only minor injuries. look at the car. this happened on friday. the driver of the other car is believed to have been drunk. that driver is okay but of course he's in a lot of trouble right now. a d.c. rabbi who secretly recorded dozens of women in a ritual bath wants community service instead of prison time. the attorney says putting his client behind bars isn't necessary. he pled guilty to 52 counts of voyeurism. each count carries up to a year sentence. he will be sentenced friday. 5:11 weather and traffic on the 1s i won't use the word

are faring poorly. out of seven mid-sized suvs, the nissan murano got a good warning. the ford flex is overall considered acceptable. as for the ones that didn't do so well, they include the dodge durango, jeep cherokee and hyundai santa fe got a marginal wrat rating. these results are based off of tests involving head-on crashes. the insurance institute for highway safety does these tests every year. montgomery county police say they know how a killer got into a couple's home. police say the killer got in through an open window. apparently that window was not broken but the latch may not have been locked. police have not said whether the

couple was targeted or it was a random act. >> being around on the streets in the suburbs, it's not something that you think, you know. it's something you think it would be a dream, you would wake up on mother's day. it's such a tragedy. they had volunteered at the national institutes of health. a couple accused of stabbing two people in northern virginia will be in court today. andrew and alecia schumhl were arrested. they have a preliminary hearing set this afternoon. it is another day of clean-up in van, texas this morning. official say they have accounted for everyone who was originally missing in that storm. the tornado drove 140-mile-per-hour winds into the town.

your bus stop forecast for today, melissa has a new crash. brand-new problem here. this is 270 southbound here just under montrose road. this is perhaps a truck fire there in the southbound lanes of 270, off to the right. we do have that new crash that tom is talking about as well in clinton, branch avenue northbound at surratts road. a little bit of a slow count here. as far as metro goes we're going to have an update. metro telling us that power outage has cleared. nearby streets have reopened. blue orange and silver is expected to be on time. no major problems in 66 and 95. a lot of that earlier road work is now out of the way. back with more on this problem on 270 in the next couple of minutes.

two prince george's county deputies are on administrative leave following a deadly shooting. it killed lionel young. the deputies were chasing him who was believed to be a suspect in a domestic violence attack. he ran a truck into the two deputies vehicles. his friends and family are looking for answers. >> i was shocked to find out your family member has been shot. >> the deputies involved in the shooting are five and six-year veterans. it is 5:24 a teacher is waking up in custody today accused of sexually abusing a student. irwin mcgoo is facing charges of sexually abusing a minor. the incidents occurred between last september and january this year. he was arrested last year. a science and math instructor is

now on administrative leave. a new report says the department of defense is paying sports teams for military attributes. the website says the money went to 14 different football teams, including the ravens. it did not say whether the red scinds received money as well. big changes could be on the way for landlords and tenants in montgomery county. they are considering a new bill requiring annual inspections for all rental units. the bill requires county review of rent increases if they are more than 100% of guidelines. they have the option of renewing a lease for two years instead of one. advocates say this gives tenants more tablet. the owner of a colorado barbecue joint is feeling the heat after offering a discount

live at the metro center station, things are getting back to normal this morning. just a few minutes after 5:00 the station gates opened. take a look at the video here. good news for folks who use this station because last night it had to be closed down completely because of a there were concerns whether or not this would impact the morning rush hour.

rocked the area in april. that tremor killed more than 8,000 people. more casualties are expected for today's earthquake. we'll keep you posted with the very latest. four dui cases in fairfax coin have been thrown out because of problems with the patrol car video. it's an update to a story you saw first on news 4. take a look at this dashcam video after an officer pulled over a man for a field sobriety test. there is no audio on the tape and the officer conducted the sobriety test off camera. the man who was pulled over says he was shocked when the officer handcuffed him last december. >> i was speaking properly. i wasn't i wasn't falling. i did all the field sobriety tests well. basically it was my word against his and i had nothing to show. >> if you are not going to utilize the equipment, then you are effectively putting yourself as an officer at risk. >> the man's lawyer says three similar stops were conducted by

the same officer and a judge threw out those cases as well. a fairfax county police spokesman says while officers are urged to get video of field sobriety tests, they are not required. the man who tried to kill president reagan can soon learn whether he will be able to leave a mental hospital. john behind -- hinckley would live with his mother. today, president obama heads to georgetown university. his meeting with faith leetders and a bipartisan group of political leaders to talk about how to end poverty in u.s. >> it is sponsored by catholic leaders. they want to talk about what is the real impact of poverty in this country and how do you overcome poverty. the president is sitting down with this discussion group.

they are going to be talking about this issue. we've been digging into some of the numbers, particularly from the children's defense fund and the census bureau. the last numbers showed about a 14% poverty rate in this country, but when you break that down specifically when it comes to kids a lot of poor kids in our area. in fact maryland and virginia both rank in the top ten when it comes to percentage of poverty in d.c. there are 28,000 kids who live in poverty and according to the numbers, a lot of those kids almost half are in extreme poverty. their parents make less than half the federal poverty level. that's about $11,000 a year for a family of four. and right now, secretary of state john kerry is on the ground in russia. he is set to meet with russian president vladimir putin. relations between the u.s. and russia have tankd after a series of geopolitical spats. there is skepticism as to what

can come from the meeting. the state department says it's important to keep lines of communication open. u.s. senator indicted on 22 corruption charges wants his trial move to d.c. he says virtually none of the alleged counts happened in his home state of new jersey. he says the gifts were just between friends. a new poll shows the majority of people in new jersey who have heard about the charges think that he is probably guilty. but 2/3 say he should have a chance to clear his name before resigning. a man involved in a prior road rage attack on george zimmerenman may have fired shots at him. he's out of the hospital after being shot at in florida. this happened in lake mary north of orlando yesterday. zimmermann is the former neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed trayvon martin

in 2012. it's not known whether the man will be charged. no word on when construction will continue at a rockville warehouse after nearly a dozen oh workers got carbon monoxide poisoning. the workers were using gas-powered equipment inside the building without proper ventilation. crews will break ground on the $1.3 billion capitol crossing project today. the project creates 8,000 jobs. bring in $40 million in property taxes every year as well. that project includes five new buildings on three blocks above 395 near massachusetts avenue. tom brady and the patriots now planning appeals for the nfl's ruling on deflategate. brady was suspended four games, took away two draft picks.

welcome back at 14 before the hour. two men lured two girls away from school with promises of drugs and alcohol ask and had sex with them. this happened last month at the virginia lodge motel in route 1 in the alexanderia section of the county. 27-year-old julio velazquez is charge with rape in this case.

he and another man picked up the girls and had sex with them at the motel. we talk to a woman who asked us not to identify her. >> i find that very disturbing and upsetting. i've never heard of this happening here in this neighborhood. >> fairfax county public schools told the girls parents that they were absent. when they were asked where they were they told them what happened. a d.c. police officer will face a federal hearing for child pornography charges today. investigators say they found incriminating pictures on officer darrell best's phone. he he's accused of sexually assaulting two teenagers, one at a church where he's a pastor and the other at police headquarters. a former montgomery county music teacher is facing more than 100 years in print for sexually abusing students. lawrence joynes pled guilty to abusing 15 students. many of them first and second graders. this happened while he was a teacher at new hampshire estates

elementary school in silver spring. a federal child pornography investigation led to his arrest in 2013. in court yesterday he pled guilty to sexually abusing a stheven grader at eastern middle school starting in the 1990s. >> this man is a predator. he's been a predator tor decades. it's a shame, disgrace that he's able to remain hidden as many years as he was and to remain a teacher in our school system. >> joynes taught in the school system for 27 years. he will be sentenced in august. 5:48 right now. in your first 4 traffic, big changes like tolls and more lanes are coming to i 66. we told you about the improvements that could force dozens of families out of their homes. now we're learning leaders are revising the plan. what does this mean for you and those families? >> reporter: today we are learning more about this project to expand to widen and add toll

lanes to i-66. this morning, we are finding out that the plans have been revised and that fewer families will lose their homes because of this project. now, right now we are on 66 west near the fairfax county parkway. we're outside of the beltway, and traffic this morning, particularly on the other side you know starting to pick up and as you very well know traffic in this corridor is typically horrendous during the rush hour periods. v dot's plan to ease congestion is to widen this 25-mile stretch between the beltway and route 15 and hey market and had toll lanes. earlier plans called for the demolition of 35 homes and businesses. the latest plan reduces that number to 18. they were able to make some adjustments to this project and that more changes are likely so

which neighborhoods will be hottest. a look at breaking news on the roads with melissa. what's going on. breaking news at 270 at montrose road still have this problem, headed southbound we have that truck fire. it is far slower than we typically see for this time of morning there on 270. also in clinton, branch avenue northbound of surratts road. left lane is shut down because of a three-car crash up there. branch avenue once you get to the beltway not having any problems there. wide look at things overall no major problems when you are taking a big look at the beltway. 66 headed into town pretty typical. back in ten minutes. a review by the news 4 i-team reveals more than 2,200 drivers in our area have been charged with ignoring stopped school buses. that's just in the past three

years. the i-team put under cover cameras at three of busiest bus stops in our area. drivers passed the buses even with children in the close proximity. >> did you see the bus? >> i see it. >> think about these numbers, between 2011 and '13, more than 800 drivers were cited in arlington and fairfax counties. most of those tickets were in fairfax. almost 950 drivers were cited in prince george's and montgomery counties. as you put on your make-up this morning, you may want to take a closer look at the label. so many products promise to improve wrinkles and uneven skin tone and erase dark circles and provide spf protection. the food and drug administration is cracking down on what companies can say.
