scene shows eight to ten cars off the tracks. at least two of them rolled over on to their sides. there are multiple injuries but exactly how many and howie is veer we're still working to learn those details. that train crashed in the port richmond area of philadelphia. that's north of 30th street station. we have team coverage tonight here in washington starting with news 4's jim hanley live at the live desk. >> reporter: from the images we're seeing right now this is a devastating scene outside of philadelphia. let's show you some live pictures now from above the derailment. the northeast regional was rounding a turn in this working class neighborhood and the neighborhood suddenly started to shake. eight to ten cars flew off the track and one seems to have broken apart. our sister station in philadelphia say at least 50 people are hurt. much of the information we're getting right now is from people who were actually on board the train. one of those is an nbc news producer. she's okay tonight.

she says around 9:20 she heard a loud crash and people flew up in the air. she describes a lot of jerking back and forth and some smoke. several people have said that the derailment happened near a curve in the track. former pennsylvania congressman patrick murphy was also aboard that train. he describes lots of banged-up passengers including one guy who had passed out, one who was carted off on a stretcher. murphy says people from the surrounding community actually rushed towards the train to help rescue people but first responders are now trying to keep those people away from the scene. as you can imagine, there is a lot of triage going on up and down that track right now. latest word coming in rescuers are still getting into those train cars and still rescuing passengers an biggest pal edge right now for first responders is darkness. ambulance drivers are alerting hospitals that most of the injuries on the way are lacerations, neck and limb injuries including fractures. we'll continue to monitor the

latest feeds coming in and bring you updates. >> jim handily, thank you. now shomari stone continues our team coverage. he's at union station. that train was scheduled to leave there at 7:00 tonight. this could really affect travel all up and down the northeast corridor. >> reporter: indeed. traffic could be affected and amtrak has released little information tonight, doreen. we did, however, receive a quote from amtrak saying we're aware of the derailment from the northeast train, 182 north of philadelphia and we'll provide updates as they become available. as you stated the train departed here from union station at 710:00 en route to new york and derailed in philadelphia sometime before 9:30. now, the national transportation safety board says it's gathering information about the derailment. the federal railroad administration has deployed a team to investigate, and the cause of this derailment is unnope. as my colleague jim handily told you at the top of the show.

it's a dark scene. first responders are using flashlights to search for passengers. no word on how this might affect tomorrow morning's commute, but i must tell you moments ago i walked into union station and talked to a woman. she was actually supposed to take an amtrak train after train 182. she was supposed to take it tonight and she just found out that that train was cancelled. so it's safe to say what's going to happen tomorrow morning. will more trains be cancelled on amtrak up to new york and philadelphia? we will continue to bring those updates as they become available, and you can follow us on twitter @nbcwashington. i'm shomari stone. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, shomari. as noted there's a great deal of information still to be gleaned from this accident which happened just a very short time ago. as noted, 240 passengers on board that train. at least 50 of them have been injured. that much with do know. >> again, we're looking at live pictures from overhead so as you can see the rescue operation

is running smoothly again after service was suspended for nearly a hour because of a suspicious pack. a silver line service suspended between east falls church and tyson's corner. passengers used shuttle buses during the suspension. police deemed the package save about 9:15. late this morning metro single-tracked for part of the red line because of a track problem. blue orange red and silver lines were plagued by delays during both rush hours yesterday and then again last night. >> on monday a grand jury will determine if two lawyers will go to trial for attacking another lawyer a lawyer in mclean and his wife touring a home invasion and abduction. today, after emotional testimony, woe heard from both the husband and the wife who were victims. they told the court that andrew schmole forced his way into their home hit the husband with a tears and tied him and his

wife up. prosecutors say his wife stood by in a getaway car outside communicating with andrew on cell phones. the husband testified that andrew became violent after hours. the next thing he said he knew is that andrew schmul jumped on top of him and put a pillow over his head and slit his throat. his wife told the judge that schmul shot a gun at her. the bullet grazed her head. police say that attack was in retaliation for the fact that elishia schmul was fired from the victim's law firm. >> investigators are looking into a nearby state for possible crews in the murder of a rockville couple. the couple went to charlestown, west virginia for dinner at a casino the night before they were found dead. a source also told our pat collins that the scene of this murders is one of the most violent in recent history. investigators believe the crime

may have started out as a burglary. a push tonight for some peace and quiet in fairfax county. some strict new rules covering everything from garbage trucks to dogs even high school sports. jackie benson is in fairfax now with more on this. jackie? >> well jim, under the proposed new laws every sounds things we take for granted could be subject to possible scrutiny and perhaps legal action. among the new noise regulations being considered in fairfax county people who let their dogs park more than two minutes out of every ten. russell carter spent tens of thousands dollars defending himself against a noise pollution problem years ago. >> my dogs when i get home from work they come out and greet me and park okay. when i throw the ball to them in

they are still as we speak trying to get on to many of these eight to ten cars that flew off the tracks earlier this evening around 9:30. we understand that 50 people are injured. now, one of the people on the train who had just gotten off in delaware was delaware senator tom carper. he had this to say just moments ago on twitter. i'm grateful to be home safe and sound in wilmington and my heart goes out to everyone involved in the crash on amtrak number 188 tonight. let's go to live aerials right now. this is the scene. again, eight to ten cars flew off the tracks and it was -- as it was rounding a curve. this is just north of the 30th street station in philadelphia. it was likely gaining speed coming out of that philadelphia station. we understand there were well over 100 people on board that train. again, we heard from passengers saying they heard a loud crash, people flying up in the air.

front corner of a vehicle as it might hit a tree or pole. that one is important because 25% of injuries occur in that type of accident. an emotionally reunion between a family and their dog after they were separated during a tornado in texas. andy and his family were trying to get away from the storm on sunday night. they drove straight into the path of an ef-3 tornado that. tornado flipped their truck and left it a tangled pile of metal. andy and his wife were pretty banged up but their 2-week-old daughter made it out without a scratch but their dog tater was nowhere to be found until today when the family went back to the scene and that's when they found their dog. >> he's just a part of the family. i don't really know what else to say. i'm glad i got my dog back. >> andy says their home was leveled by the tornado but he

says it doesn't matter. he's got his whole family alive and healthy. >> those people in tornado alley have been through a lot in the last three days. things are starting to settle down for them. >> they will settle down big front. this front that came through is settling things down in the entire country. still on the mild side. temperatures hit 90 degrees for the first time this season. right now we sit at 79. we have not cooled all that much. look at the doouptd, down to 11 right now. the dew point number if it's above 60 it's fairly uncomfortable. right now 79 over 4. that's a very comfortable number and this also means that if all conditions are equal we could get down to 42 in the city. i don't think we'll get that low but that shows you much cooler air we've got coming in. 6 still fairly cool around our region. one thing we won't see this evening rain. no rain out there tonight. we won't see rain during the day tomorrow into thursday friday. the next chance of rain comes

just in time for the weekend. satellite and radar showing our front as it moves on through. we do have a few mid to high level clouds going through but you can almost see through the clouds. these are not going to be of any consequence to us later on this afternoon or later on this evening to the overnight hours but look at temperatures. 79 d.c. and 80 in richmond and behind this 53 in cumberland and 54 in pittsburgh. that's the cool air that will be filtering in as we move on through the overnight hours and winds gusting upwards of 20 to 25 this evening. that's why we're seeing the cooler air move n.by tomorrow morning between 6:00 and 8:00 down to 59. many of you into the low 50s. rather cool and breezy. winds upwards of 16 to 20 miles per hour. we're talking a nice spring-like afternoon. we just had ten days in a row to 80 degrees or above. second longest streak in the month of may ever in the d.c. area, so hey, it's about time we get back to the spring with

high temperatures right around 70 tomorrow. 67 martinsburg and 67 gaithersburg and 72 down near fredericksburg. we'll call it cool as a result of a 20-degree temperature difference between today and tomorrow and first time below average. 59 by 9:00 a.m. 64 at 11:00 a.m. nice day to get out there and do a little bit of exercising. for sure the spring weather remains on tuesday. 75 on friday. friday looks great, too. then we get to the weekend. a little unsettled. 30% chance of showers. maybe a thunderstorm on saturday and again on sunday and again on monday. any storms that develop this weekend with more humidity we could see some very heavy downpours, especially during the day sunday and into monday so that's something we will watch. temperatures in the mid-80s but it could feel like the upper 80s. it will be rather soupy over the weekend. don't cancel any plans if you have any games or kids have any games. not expecting huge washouts.
