new york city penn station. it stopped at the 30th street station here in philadelphia. about 9:30 last night, and just a short distance away, after it left that station the train started to come off the tracks. several cars left the tracks. the engine part of the train separated from the rest of the train, came off the tracks as well as the train started to round a curve in this area. five crew members on board, and over 300 on board when this accident happened. as we have been telling you, 140 people taken to area hospitals. every hospital in philadelphia received some patients woe understand as they had to ramp up their staffing late last night. some of those injuries severe. and at least five people confirmed dead at this point. as many as six or seven people have been found dead already in this investigation. so from here, eun, that's what happens. an investigation that's happening with the fire department, also happening with the ntsb will be happening as the day and the days go on.

eun? >> aaron gilchrist live in philadelphia for us thank you. we'll check in with you throughout the newscast. now let's turn our attention to the weather. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein, we can feel it already. >> you can see it in the storm team 4 tower cam with the sunrise occurring as we speak. the clouds cruising through. these kind of look like spring clouds coming in. unlike yesterday's summaryery clouds floating over us. 50s northern and western suburbs. and reagan national now is at 65. and going forward here each hour through the morning, temperatures by 7:00 much of the region will be down into the 50s. and right in washington not changing much. we'll be in the low 60s by 8:00. still hovering up near 60 by 8:00 a.m.

philadelphia this morning, a massive train derailment. passenger train derailment of an amtrak train late last night. you can see the cars still lying touch tracks here and -- off the tracks here and some flipped over, there were people inside those cars who were crushed by luggage and other people as they rolled around inside. and now the investigation part of this incident begins in earnest this morning with the arrival of ntsb crews. news4's transportation reporter adam tuss here in philadelphia with me this morning with that part of our coverage. adam? >> reporter: that's right, aaron. what we are being told is that some ntsb members are already on the scene here and more are certain to show up. we know that they launched from washington last night. so they'll be here today taking control of the scene. but i want to walk everybody around the neighborhood outside the crash scene. come with me here. i want to show you what we're

dealing with. this is an industrial area business area. walmart, lowe's, that kind of thing. this is an area where there are people who are around here. i-95 just off in the distance down there. there are school buses that are trying to get through. there are people trying to get to work this morning. so this is a busy area in north philadelphia where people are trying to get around. now, i want to show you some video that we shot earlier this morning. we were just outside the frankford junction where this accident happened. some guys were there with their flashlights looking around. obviously a lot of work going on here and there was also some big cranes that had been brought in to do a lot of the heavy lifting. now, let's go back up to the chopper. show you what they're dealing with on the ground right now. it's not a pretty scene. as you can see from the chopper video one of the rail cars is a mangled mess. the ntsb will come here they're going to try to figure out how fast this train was going. the section of the track, the

curve of the track, what the operator was doing. so many questions have to be figured out at this point. we should mention that service is being impacted. there is no amtrak service between philadelphia and new york. right now there is limited service between d.c. and philly and new york and boston. but no service between philly and new york. so that's going to impact people as they try to get around. i'm being told the northeast corridor is going to be like this for several days. back to you guys. >> all right, adam, thank you. we have been gathering information about what happened here last night. train 188 left d.c. after 7:00, headed for new york city. that train was spoedzed to -- supposed to arrive at new york's penn station at 10:30 last night. the train would have left the philly station around 9:10 and we know that it was about 9:30 when the derailment happened here not far from where with

we're standing right now. it was supposed to be a 3 1/2 hour trip that ended tragically last night. it could be quite a while before we have answers about what went wrong here, eun. in the meantime, we are going to wait for as much asservice to resume here. it could be several days before amtrak can repair the tracks and get service going again through philadelphia. >> all right, aaron gilchrist, we'll check in with you once again. thank you. crawl forward, sir. >> this is footage from instagram just into the newsroom showing people trying to escape the train. you can see how scary the situation was after that crash. many people had to squeeze their way out of that train. we have heard from witnesses who said they had to break through the emergency windows, the trains were flipped over, people were on the ground. one person showing that they were hurt on the legs and the arms and many are posting the terrifying experiences on social

we have breaking news out of philadelphia where an amtrak train derailed on the way to new york. these are live pictures now. aerial views of the scene. that train started here in washington. the crash killed at least five people on board. according to the philadelphia mayor, many of the passengers are likely from d.c. new jersey and new york. today the ntsb will investigate exactly what happened why the train derailed and whether this could have been prevented. hundreds will gather at the national law enforcement officers memorial tonight to remember those killed in the line of duty. a candlelight vigil will be held at 8:00 p.m. on "e" street in northwest. it's one of the dozens of events marking national police week. the bike ride hit the area yesterday. and the names of two local officers were added to the washington area law enforcement memorial. time now for your weather

breaking news this morning out of philadelphia. you are looking live from above the city above an amtrak train derailment that happened about 9:30 last night. you can see the mangled mess the train cars have left here as they lie on their side in some cases. sometimes on their roofs. the engine of the train separated from the rest of the cars as well here when this accident happened overnight. this morning we can see that there are people on the ground investigators, engineers, dogs

on the scene as well that will continue the investigation, continue to look for anyone who may have been hurt or killed here at this crash site. as you might imagine, this was an incredibly scary situation for anybody who was involved in this. 238 passengers on board that train. five crew members as well. and we talked to some of the passengers about the experience they had here tonight. >> rolling along nice and smooth and then all of a sudden we were on our side. then it looked like we'd flip. we never flipped we went on to the side and back off the side. >> reporter: we heard from one person who said people were thrown around the train car. suitcases were hitting people. they said it was dark. wires were hanging from everywhere. right now in many cases there are still wires hanging above the train cars. there are wires strewn across the tracks here as well. damaged tracks we should mention. we should tell you that amtrak has been putting out statements through the night about what's happening on the ground here. we want to share with you one of

their statements. they tell us they quote, are deeply saddened by the loss of life here. and they go on to say that amtrak has established a hotline and family assistance center and that the media be respectful of employees and friends and families as try to recover from the incident that happened late last night. eun, much more to come from philadelphia later on this morning. >> thank you, aaron. we know that a lot of d.c. people use amtrak to commute especially from union station. you're wondering how you'll work around this situation this morning. news4's kristin wright is live at union station with a look at how amtrak is handling this. the schedules have changed a bit, kristen >> reporter: that's right. if you look at the board here the 6:30 train to philadelphia is boarding right now. the 7:00 train to philadelphia is on time. so that is good news, but keep

in mind that amtrak service between d.c. and philadelphia is running on a modified schedule today because of the derailment. so you'll want to make sure to check. now, this is gate "f" where the 7:00 train is going to be leaving this morning. we talked to a few of the passengers over here who are actually scheduled to be on the 6:00 train which was in fact cancelled this morning. take a listen. >> i was scheduled to be on the 6:00 train this morning. i didn't find out until it was cancelled -- that it was cancelled until i got to union station. >> reporter: had you heard about the train derailment last night? >> i did, unfortunately. it's a tragic event. >> reporter: so you'll want to definitely check in advance either on the amtrak website, but if you you on the website you may get a message that says status unavailable. then you have to call the 1-800 number. expect to wait if you do that. i called -- literally i have been on hold for 53 minutes with amtrak. expect to sit on the phone and wait if you need to call in advance.

but again, trains are leaving on time. one boarding now in philadelphia. and another leaving at 7:00. back to you guys in the studio. >> kristin wright live at union station, thanks for that update. we spent the night combing through data about your safety of amtrak and the likelihood of a plane crash. angie goff has more from the live desk on what we found from the federal railroad administration. >> we were able to break this all down for you. track issues as you mentioned the biggest cause of accidents for amtrak over the last decade, when it comes to the accidents, in that time period -- only five deaths now, that's not including the five from yesterday. as for derailments, there have been a total of 289. we actually compared them to other railroads and found that amtrak only accounts for 3% of train accidents in the u.s. this is over the last three years or so. now the numbers also revealing that about half of amtrak

accidents involve passenger trains. trains like the one involved in the crash yesterday. eun? >> angie, thank you. we'll follow the lawmakers on the subcommittee that oversees railroad safety and amtrak. it's a bit of interesting timing that subcommittee has a hearing this morning. industry witnesses were slated to speak about deregulation but they could face questions about yesterday's derailment. that hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. and we'll be on top of the story all morning, on the air and online. download the app for any breaking new developments. now 6:21. weather and traffic on the 1s. tom kierein is telling us about the cooler weather. >> yeah temperatures have dropped 30 degrees since yesterday. we have plunged on a gusty wind into the 50s much of the region. there's a live view from storm team 4 capitol camera.

that northwesterly wind bringing it down into the 50s in much of the region north and west of the metro area. now near 60s in prince georges, fairfax and right in washington now we're in the mid 60s. and pollen count that's down as well. it continues to drop lower and lower each day that goes by. mostly mulberry tree pollen. we have clumpy clouds but they're not producing any rain. hour by hour the cloud cover will break up. we'll get lots of sunshine by noontime. still a blustery wind, into the afternoon. as temperatures climb up to just around 70 degrees much of the region by late afternoon. overnight, the winds will diminish and the temperatures get even chillier. by dawn on thursday, much of the region down into the 40s. starting off early tomorrow morning. then tomorrow a lighter wind. on friday another beautiful day, in the 40s in morning though. afternoon highs, low 70s. feeling like summer again over

the weekend. the outlook for saturday, sunday, both days into the low and mid 80s. a chance of an isolated thundershower sunday afternoon. then a chance of thundershowers with highs mid 80's each day as we head into the midweek. increased humidity maybe a flash of lightning as well. each afternoon from the weekend into the midweek could get some storms around. next weather and traffic on the 1s coming up at 6:31. your drive time commuter forecast now melissa is looking at an accident in silver spring. >> this just popped up. this is georgia avenue at wayne avenue. report of a pedestrian struck. the other problem in silver spring, chopper 4 over this one. kemp hill road is shut down at glen allen avenue. that's because of a serious crash overnight. now we have wires across the roadways. going to be some delays this morning. alternate is georgia avenue. 70 west at east patrick street had the ramp closed because of a

crash. wide look at things overall looking typical right now. no major problems. 66 headed in to town a little bit slow as you approach the beltway. the first 4 traffic tracker is in the traffic on 66. more coming up in a couple of minutes. >> thank you, melissa. new this morning, five males have been shot in prince george's county. police say one of them was pronouned dead at the hospital. several others have graze wind wounds. the police don't have suspects or a possible motive. firefighters rescued two children from a house fire in prince george's county. the fire broke out at 3:00 in landover. crews rushed a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old to the hospital. two others were also taken to the hospital. all suffered from smoke inhalation. they're expected to be okay. 6:25. today we're learning about a new initiative to attract more female sailors and marines and

ray mabus wants to double the amount of paid maternity leave to attract women. that will bring it up to 12 weeks. he hopes the changes will help keep talented women. he's also calling for longer child care hours. right now, biggest problem around town is going to be in silver spring here. i have a road closure, and we'll tell you how to get around that in a couple of minutes. plus more on the breaking news out of philadelphia involving an amtrak train out of washington that came off the tracks as it left philly. what we're learning about the crash site this morning and the similarities this accident has to one in the same area more than 70 years ago. your time is

we have breaking news out of philadelphia. there is a big investigation starting into why an amtrak train careened off the tracks in philadelphia. the train started here in washington. you can see some of the images

from this terrible scene. one car ripped into time. five people died. at least six people are in critical condition right now. first we're seeing cooler temperatures this morning as you get ready or the leave for work. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has your commuter forecast. >> yeah you have to find your spring jacket again this morning after yesterday's short sleeve afternoon near 90. it has plummeted into the 50s. northern and western suburbs. low 60s, prince george's county around the bay and much of southern maryland. for the commute, should have good weather for the commute for this morning. for midday and for this afternoon. a little bit of a gusty wind. and then 20 to 25 miles per hour this afternoon. staying in the 50s for the morning commute. then hovering right around 70 degrees with dry roads during the afternoon commute. coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s, your walk to work forecast coming up at 6:41. melissa, we have had a couple of

problems in silver spring, you have a new issue. >> two new problems in silver spring. i want to give you an alternate on this it's been there for excite some time. i think it will be stuck around for quite some hours. this is a crash in kemp hill road shut down on glenallen avenue. we have pepco on the scene to get that cleared up for us, but your alternate, the best thing to do is take georgia avenue instead. georgia avenue at wayne, there's a pedestrian struck, the patient refused treatment. 66 eastbound there, first 4 traffic tracker is headed eastbound a bit of volume. the beltway doesn't look so bad. a little slow at the top of the beltway and then remember 70 west at east patrick street had the ramp shut down because of a crash. more in ten minutes. aaron, over to you now. >> all right, melissa, thank

you. back to the breaking news in philadelphia this morning. five people dead six others in critical condition after a deadly train derailment here in philadelphia. you're looking at some video from earlier this morning where you can see those cars some of them lying on their sides. some on their roofs and there are crews on the ground, investigators, engineers from amtrak and other agencies. the fire department all starting the process of looking into more deeply what exactly may have caused this train to derail here late last night. and leave five people at least dead at this point. 140 people injured as well. we know that the ntsb is beginning its investigation today as well. and more equipment is arriving on the scene here. news4 transportation reporter adam tuss here on the ground with me here in philadelphia with more on what's happening from that perspective. adam? >> reporter: that's right, aaron. we want to set the scene for you here. look at what's going on. in fact this big vehicle is

just now coming here, we should tell people that the police have this entire area cordoned off. you cannot get anywhere near this crash scene. maybe but a couple of blocks. so the police keeping everybody away as far away as they can. i want to show you some video of what we shot earlier today. the crepeanes moving in. they have at will of work to do. investigators have been here all night and more are showing up this morning. what happens now, the ntsb comes here. they take control of the scene, they start to figure out what went wrong. was speed a factor? was the conductor doing something he or she shouldn't have been doing? was there something wrong with the rail? something wrong with the wires? there are so many questions that have to be answered today. the ntsb as you probably know is meticulous with these investigations. they'll get in there and examine every little piece they can to try to figure out what went wrong. that's where we'll be today.

service is also impacted. we should tell you that there's limited service between d.c. and philly and between new york and boston. there is no amtrak service between philadelphia and new york city. we'll send it back to you. >> all right, adam tuss live for us here in philadelphia as well, thank you. we should point out that this train derailment this accident could have a major impact on our area. the mayor of philadelphia michael nutter noted this train started in d.c. last night around 7:00. made its way up to philadelphia and so he says it is very possible that there were people from the d.c. area on board that train. >> many of those passengers are probably either washington, d.c. residents, new jersey residents or new york residents. i have reached out to both mayor de blasio in new york city, we have been in communication and i also talked to mayor muriel bowser in washington, d.c.

>> now, mayor bowser is aware of the situation, she posted a tweet saying she is praying for everyone on that train. passengers, crew and the first responders. we should note we were sharing with you some pictures from above this crash site earlier today. some live pictures. there is now a three-mile no fly zone around this site as this investigation continues. >> aaron gilchrist, thank you. we wanted to describe how this happened for you. amtrak train 188 left our area and reached philadelphia's 30th street station shortly after 9:00 last night. that's philadelphia's equivalent of our union station. now, the train was only minutes away from that location, on its way to new york when it reached this curve. you can see that curve right there. it's a sharp curve that bends northward. you can see it curves because it's try to go alongside -- it's trying to go alongside 95.

the speed limit there is 55 miles per hour. this train went off of the tracks and flew landing east of the curve instead of going north as it was supposed to go. of course ntsb investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened here. now the location where train 188 has derailed has seen devastation before. the congressional limited careened off the track with 541 passengers on board. it left from d.c. headed to new york and shortly after passing the north philadelphia station train equipment overheated causing a derailment. 79 people died. dozens of passengers are waking up in philadelphia hospitals this morning. after that northeast regional derailment. we're live outside of one of them with what we're learning about their conditions and how emergency teams are handling all of these patients. >> so we saw it go like that, it swung. you can feel it off the tracks, then we just rolled and rolled.

we have breaking news right now. the ntsb is now on the scene of the deadly train derailment in philadelphia. here's a live look from the chopper. as you can see the train cars are still off the track. crews are on the scene as well and that one car to the top of your screen is a complete mangled mess. it's just bent in half. and ntsb investigators are trying to figure out how that train car left the tracks on that sharp curve as it was headed to new york. it derail right near the site of the philadelphia train station. it was originating from here in union station on its way to new

it was an absolute disastrous mess. >> an amtrak train out of d.c. left ripped apart after a violent derailment sends passengers tumbling. right now, a philadelphia neighborhood is a chaotic scene as rescue teams search for people that are still unaccounted for. crawling okay. where am i crawling to? >> crawl forward, sir. >> still a very active mayor michael nutter said last night a lot of people from our area from the d.c. area were likely on that train. it left union station in night. amtrak put an emergency hotline in place. you can call this number if

you're worried about a loved one. the number to call is 1-800-523-9101. we put that number online. six people are in critical condition from the crash. five people died. we have not learned any of the victims' names. we'll be learning a lot more about what happened today. and what caused the train to careen off the tracks. news4's aaron gilchrist is live in philadelphia where we have team coverage on this situation. aaron? >> reporter: eun, good morning. we're a couple hundred yards away from really the last couple of cars on that train. i'll step out of the way so you -- can see from the ground here even some of the damage. if you look closely you can see a power pole leaning over some of the wires hanging down and touching the track and the two cars the back two cars that are in the area as well. we'll take you up now, live from our chopper above the scene here. you can see just how devastating the scene was. okay we don't have those images for you, but we can tell you it was a very traumatic scene as you can imagine as we saw all the cars that were off of the

tracks some of them had fallen over on their sides. some had flipped over rolled over people inside rolling with those cars as they came off the tracks. 238 people on board that plane. five crew members as well on that train. 140 injuries on that train when this accident happened late last night. we of course have team coverage for you here from philadelphia. news4's transportation reporter adam tuss is on the ground with us. looking at some of the questions the ntsb will have to answer as they begin their investigation, but we begin with nbc's stephanie gosk. she is outside temple hospital where trauma teams treated the patients there. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. we're now in front of the frankford hospital which is the closest hospital to you, and the crash scene itself. one of five hospitals that receive patients. they received 26 here.

we're told that there are six critical patients and those numbers are likely to change over the course of the next few hours. and even days. you know, you look at that scene, seven cars, all of them off the tracks and think about being on a train with no seat belt. you can imagine it doesn't take much to get thrown around. and every single one of the cars toppled or ripped apart. you can imagine the injuries they're looking at. broken bones, lacerations, all the way up to things more extreme than that. and beyond the injuries were told about, 140 of those passengers had to at the very least had to be looked at and you can imagine the hospitals late at night being overwhelmed with the numbers. today they'll look at the manifest trying to account for everyone and checking out the patients in the hospitals like this one to see who is in here injured and get them in touch with their family members. aaron? >> all right, stephanie gosk live in philadelphia.

we'll see more of your reporting on the "today" show at 7:00 here in a few minutes. we should note that amtrak has told us that the train 188 was scheduled to leave d.c. union station at 7:00 last nightal. it was a six passenger train that was supposed to arrive at new york penn station at 10:40. we know the accident happened right around 9:30 last night. it should have been a normal a routine 3 1/2 hour train ride. obviously, it ended quite tragically with the derailment here. 9:30 last night. we are still waiting for investigators to get on the scene here and we have day light obviously. they'll be able to work better. much more quickly in figuring out how this happened. back to you. >> thank you. we are awaiting on doctors and hospitals to give us an update on the conditions. we'll give that to you in a

have been doing? was there a problem with the power lines? the ntsb is now going to show up on the scene and we're told they should be here in full team around 8:00 this morning. i want to walk you around the neighborhood here. just kind of show you what we're dealing with outside of the crash scene. we are only a block away from where the actual crash scene has happened but the police have this entire area cordoned off. you cannot get through here. it is a tough place to be right now. there are people who work and live in this neighborhood. i want to show you some video we shot this morning. the cranes coming in they'll have a full day trying to pick up the pieces off the tracks. the investigators are here. there's plenty of work that has to be done and the most frustrating thing, people will want answers. it will take time to figure out what happened. back to you. >> all right, adam, thank you. remember, download the nbc washington app.

the scene. earlier pedestrian struck there. pedestrian is fine. looks like most of the intersection is moving along just fine. right now, on the interloop of the beltway no problem there. first 4 traffic tracker at 66, 95 pretty typical. as well as 27 0. >> thank you, melissa. the derailment will impact travelers and we know you're scrambling to get information from amtrak about which trains in our area are delay or cancelled. let's check in with kristin wright who is monitoring the service updates live from union station. kristen? >> reporter: well, we do have some new information from the last time we talked. the amtrak train supposed to arrive here at union station at 8:15 this morning is cancelled. so is the train from new york city here to union station scheduled to arrive at 9:51. those are train numbers 151 and 181. i want to show you the board

here. you can see the 7:00 train here to philadelphia last call, they're boarding right now. it is actually on time. the 7:25 train to philadelphia, also on time. now a few people that are on this 7:00 train that we talked to a few moments ago told us they were scheduled to be on the 6:00 train. but that train was cancelled because of the derailment. take a listen to a gentleman we met this morning. >> that trip to new york is cancelled. could go as far as philadelphia but beyond that they don't know what's going to happen. >> what's your plan? >> looking at the bus schedules. i may have to cancel the whole thing because everything is full. >> all the buses? >> yeah. >> reporter: so all amtrak service between philadelphia and d.c. is on a modified schedule so make sure to check in advance. back to you. >> kristin wright live at union station, thank you. take a look now at the front

page of the "philadelphia inquirer." you can see a picture of the crash along with the headline that says five die as train derails. let's go back to our aaron gilchrist now. he's anchoring our coverage live from philadelphia. what can you see now, aaron? >> reporter: eun, we have seen more and more investigators coming to the scene, some engineers who here all night and a new collapsed unit came from the philadelphia fire department a few minutes ago. as we talk about the investigation that's happening here today, as you look at the scene of that train derailment, you can't help but to remember that there were 243 people on board that train. so now their families are going to want to know how they are. all the folks who were injured here, the people who died here, their families are being brought to the elementary school here in this area. a hotline has been set up by amtrak so that the folks can call and get information about their family members and we're going to focus a lot over the next few days on those people who were on that train when this
