control at 106 miles an hour? >> questions the safety measures that were not in place to prevent it. >> that type of system is designed to keep the train below its maximum speed. >> and preparing for the worst in the search for the missing. >> seven families are home now making funeral arrangements. and i hope i'm not number eight. i pray to god i'm not number eight. >> a man in maryland is very angry tonight. he is the father of a man who is still missing after that deadly derailment in philadelphia. >> bob gildersleeve sr. says he is expecting the worst. all they found of his son at the crash site so far is his cell phone. bob gildersleeve jr. lives outside of baltimore. he has two teenaged sons and he is still unaccounted for. >> abid gilani died in that crash. we know he lived in rockville, maryland. he commuted every week to his job at wells fargo in new york. he was headed there last night after attending a funeral in virginia. the search and rescue rescue mission continues at the crash site right now.

we know seven people died when amtrak train 188 took a turn at 106 miles an hour when the speed limit was 50. the engineer pulled an emergency brake just three seconds before the crash. that was only enough time to slow down to 102 before the lead car and then all the rest jumped the tracks. >> we have seem coverage tonight here in d.c. and in philadelphia. we begin with shomari stone and a very emotional father who wants answers about this crash. shomari? >> reporter: well good evening. this father is very upset, filled with mixed emotions. he is angry at amtrak because he says they're slow to give him answers. he is sad because he can't fine his son, and he fears he is behind me under that wreckage right over there under the bright lights. let's hear what he has to say. >> a.m. and i'm cried out. i can't cry no more. >> reporter: bob gildersleeve sr. worries his son died on the amtrak train that derailed in philadelphia.

>> he was in the first car okay. it's turned inside out. they found his phone. his phone. they found. but they can belongings. >> reporter: 45-year-old bob gildersleeve jr. boarded the train in his hometown of baltimore. he lives in the suburbs with his wife and kids, ages 13 and 16. he is the vice president of corporate accounts for ecolab. tonight the ntsb says the train's engineer hit the brake as it went 106 miles per hour. >> so far i saw the engineer. he looks like a decent fellow. but how can a decent fellow do 106 miles an hour around a 50 miles an hour limited turn? how does that happen? >> and your son is missing. >> and my son is missing. and my grandchildren are broken hearted. >> reporter: bob gildersleeve sr. was a new york firefighter for 12 years, an nypd officer for three. he demands to know his son's whereabouts and why the train

derailed. >> i don't think anybody knows what is going on anymore. that's why i'm angry, my friend. >> if the amtrak officials are watching this, what would you say to them? >> i'd say you better get out in the field and see what is going on. >> reporter: bob gildersleeve sr. and his grandson passed out missing flyers today. they're going to do so tomorrow in philadelphia because they want a sense of closure, and hopefully they'll find his son. live in philadelphia i'm shomari stone. back to you. >> shomari, thank you. another maryland man on that train last night was heading back to his job in new york after attending a family member's funeral. he had recently worked for marriott and his family is still here in rockville. news4's darcy spencer continues our team coverage. she is at union station. darcy? >> reporter: doreen you're right. he would not normally be on a train on a tuesday evening because he spends his workweek up in new york. but he had that funeral yesterday right here in the d.c.

area got back on the train, but never made it to his destination. >> so he was a really good person. he came to our wedding a few months ago. >> reporter: friends and family show up at the rockville home of a wells fargo executive to express condolences. abid gilani was 55 years old. neighbors say he lived here with his wife and commuted by train to his job in new york. he was among those who died when that amtrak train derailed in philadelphia. this is his cousin. >> i found out from facebook someone had, you know sent prayers about, you know about him being missing. and then kind of found out that way. >> reporter: he says gilani had attended his uncle's funeral tuesday in falls church. after the funeral, gilani boarded the train to head back to new york. that's where he was a senior vice president for wells fargo hospitality finance group. he last spoke to him about four income the afternoon. >> it was just kind of a shock,

because i was probably one of the last people to talk to him yesterday before he left. >> reporter: gilani's linked in page also says he had worked as an executive for marriott for years, and had previously worked overseas. >> well i'm absolutely stunned. >> reporter: norma is a neighbor who described gilani as dedicated to work and his family. >> very close-knit family. really a love that spanned to globe. devoted to their son, very hardworking. and to think that if in fact he is no longer with us it's just a terrible tragedy that his life has been snuffed out like that. >> reporter: just a tragedy for family and friends. a wells fargo and marriott both issued statements earlier today expressing their condolences. jim, back to you. >> thanks darcy. this is the deadliest train crash in the u.s. in nearly seven years. tonight the mayor of philadelphia wants to know what was going on in the minutes before it happened. mayor nutter said in his words

there is no way in the world the engineer should have been going that fast. jim handly is at the live desk now with what we're finding out about the man behind the controls. jim? >> reporter: vance, he has refused to give a statement to police but tonight we're learning new information about the man at the controls. his name is brandon bastion. according to his linked in page he joined amtrak in 2006. in 2010 he became an engineer. the engineer is in charge of operating the train's speed, brakes and direction. bastion lives in new york. according to police he would not give a statement to officers after the crash, and left a police station with a lawyer. tonight philadelphia's mayor is warning against a jump to conclusions. >> we certainly want to have more information before any judgment. but there are just some facts here. if you go 106 miles an hour on a 50 miles an hour rated curve, you got to figure something bad

is going to happen. i don't know what was going on with the engineer. did something else happen in the engine compartment? and all of those other questions remain to be answered. >> reporter: now tonight the ntsb says it will give bastion are day or two before attempting to interview him. at the live desk i'm jim handly. >> thank you, jim. the news4 i-team is looking at one of the key factors in the crash, the speed. the train was traveling more than twice the speed limit on that section of track. and there is a system that could have slowed it down before the turn. it's called positive train control. >> positive train control is designed to prevent derailments due to overspeeding. so this is exactly the type of an accident that positive train control should prevent. it's designed to do that. >> congressman dated positive train control after a crash between a freight train and a commuter train in california in 2008. it is used already on part of amtrak's northeast corridor but

not in the section of last night's derailment. >> that derailment is hitting close to home for the entire naval academy family tonight. midshipman justin zemser was killed in that crash. he was a rising star at the academy. a wide receiver on the navy football team. a 4.0 grade point average. he was an only child on the way home to new york to see his mom. >> he was wonderful. he was absolutely wonderful. everybody looked up to my son. >> he'll be truly missed. i miss him like a brother. >> zemser was also an intern for new york city councilman eric ulric. he was only 21 years old. jim gaines was on his way home from meetings in d.c. when the train derailed. the 48-year-old was a video software architect for the associated press, and won awards for helping to create the agency's online video network. gaines is survived by his wife

and two children. was a new job that put rachel jacobs on that train last night. she was 39 years old, had just become ceo of a philadelphia-based educational software startup called appernet. she was headed mohamed home when she was killed. 23 are still in hospital 8 in critical condition. one doctor at temple university hospital says nearly all of the patients there had rib fractures, which tells him the passengers quote, rattled around a lot. he expected to see a lot of head trauma, but the hospital had only one such case. thousands of travellers now are finding other ways to get between d.c. and new york. airlines added flights. greyhound bus also added more trips. the bus company says it will honor amtrak tickets until the train service resumes.

international limousine service says its ride volume is ten times normal. in the meantime, amtrak says it will have limited service again tomorrow between washington and philadelphia. all the trains between philadelphia and new york have been canceled. if you have train tickets out of d.c. you're encouraged to check with amtrak before you leave your house for the station. and we're talking about a lot of very cool air. 46 state college. 48 pittsburgh. that cool air continues to move in our area. a very chilly start to your thursday. wait until you see the direction the temperatures take for the weekend. thousands gather at the national law enforcement officers memorial to mark the sacrifices made over the last year. also tonight, we'll tell you why some prison guards were just suspended in connection with the riots last month in baltimore. and as we work to learn more about the cause of the amtrak derailment we remind you can find all of our coverage in the

i'm jim handly at the live desk. we have just learned that the chairman of the house transportation committee will travel to the site of that amtrak crash tomorrow morning. bud schuster is a republican from pennsylvania. he is expected to arrive around 8:30 tomorrow. just today, the house appropriations committee voted to slash amtrak funding by $251 million despite the crash that would leave the railroad's

"the washington post" was the first to report that mark connelly will step down that move comes ahead of a public report that concluded he and another agent were likely drunk when they drove through a suspicious package scene and into a temporary barricade outside the white house. a montgomery county highway services employee was killed when his dump truck crashed on the icc today. his name was leo brook. we're told his truck was hauling asphalt when it collided with a car and turned on its side. the icc was closed in both directions today while the crews worked to free him from the truck and clean up the wreck. brooks later died at a hospital. that highway is now open tonight. a very special evening for our own barbara harris in the

storm team radar 4 is clear. it's going stay that way the next 24 to 48 hours. once we get into the weekend is when i think we'll start to see showers and even a few thunderstorms. right now you see the cloud cover. but notice the direction. all coming down from the north. we still have clouds up towards the north and northwest. that's why temperature there's have not fallen quite so much. and once the winds die, we will really see those numbers fall. 50 crease the overnight low temperature today in d.c. 43 in martinsburg. 43 in gaithersburg and 43 towards manassas. when you wake up tomorrow morning, you're probably going to need the jacket. you're taking the kids to the bus stop or driving yourself, a very cool start for sure as most of us have seen the very warm weather the last few days. after that start sunny and nice during the afternoon, and really great tomorrow afternoon. after about 12:00, 1:00 temperatures should be nice. 65 to 72 degrees. that's what we're going for a high temperature out there on our thursday. now, as far as travel is concerned, no problem. dry roads. jacket early if you're exercising outside.

maybe that does sweatshirt. and if you're out and about, a great afternoon. i'm not worried than at all. headed to the playground with the kids in tavern that's the best time to do it, especially for recess. look at this 11:00 a.m. recess if you want to volunteer. 64 degrees. perfect time to do that. i it but i don't think so. 71 on thursday. 77 on friday. and then well then we get right back into summer. 86 on saturday. 88 on sunday. and we're talking about the heat index close to 90, maybe 92 on sunday. good chance of some thunderstorm activity. only a 30 to 40% chance here. but when i say good chance i do think we'll see some. i also think we're going to see a couple of stronger storms that could have locally heavy downpours. that's something we'll watch out for too. muggy, quite warm this weekend. unsettled with a lot of cloud cover, especially during the afternoon. and once again, we could see some of that thunder. and with that, we would see some of the downpours coming through. monday and tuesday, more of the same. high temperatures well above average. 85 on monday. 80 on tuesday. you also keep in the chance for thunderstorm activity. next wednesday, back to 77. but that's still a little bit
