sped off the tracks in philadelphia. here's a live picture above the mangled remains of the train. >> recovery crews are working to find any other victims right now. about a dozen people are still missing. >> we know at least seven people died and we just learned the names of one of the victims overnight. eight people are in critical condition. the attorney for the amtrak engineer at the controls says his client doesn't remember what happened. >> now we know the train was going too fast heading into a curve. that information was recorded on the train's event data recorder but investigators are looking at everything that happened in the moments before the train flew off the tracks. one person they are turning to is the engineer. right now our transportation reporter adam tuss joins us live from philadelphia with that part of the story. adam? >> reporter: that's right, aaron. you know -- we're learning more about the train engineer, brandon bostian from queens. [ no audio ] way too fast at the time of this

crash. 106 miles an hour in a section of track that should have been only been 50 mile an hour. so we have to learn more about what was happening at that time. investigators certainly want to talk to him. he has made a statement with the police. but he needs to talk to the ntsb -- his attorney says he has no recollection of what happened there. but we do know he hit the emergency brake right before the crash. in the next few days the ntsb is going to be interviewing the crew. they'll be doing a detailed analysis of the recorders, testing the signal systems. they'll check the system, the rail, everything they're looking at there. we have heard from the p.a. task force who is here doing a rescue and recovery operation. don't forget, there are still people who are unaccounted for. in this area. so there are dogs that are going

through this area to help the p.a. task force figure out what they can get in touch with here. they'll be in there looking for that. so we have to remember that that is one of the key factors here. certainly a lot of questions still to be answered here in philadelphia and we'll stay on top of it for you. >> adam tuss, thank you. new this morning we know the name of a fifth person who died on that train. derrick griffith founded a prep school in new york and that school is closed today as staff remembers him. griffith also worked as an acting dean at medgar evers college in new york city. he was 42 years old. griffith is among seven people who died when the train flew off the tracks in philadelphia. we're still working to learn two of the victims' names. the victims were mothers, ceos, scholars, executives, fathers, service members and sons. at this hour there are still passengers missing from that derailment. an emotional father from maryland says he's angry at amtrak because it is slow to give him answers about his son. gildersleeve, sr., worries his son died on the amtrak train. >> he was in the first car. okay?

it's turned inside out. they found his phone. his phone. but they can't find him or his belongings. >> gildersleeve's son boarded the train in baltimore where he lives with his wife and two teens. the 45-year-old is a vice president of corporate accounts for ecolab. his father and children plan to pass out missing flyers again today in philadelphia pause they want a sense of closure. 6:04. meantime, amtrak says it will have limited service today. running modified schedules between washington and philadelphia. all trains between philly and new york still cancelled. if you have train tickets out of d.c. you're encouraged to check with amtrak before you head to the station. now thousands of travelers are finding ways to get around. greyhound added more buses and

the bus company says it will honor amtrak tickets until train service resumes. an international limousine service says the ride volume is ten times what it normally is. we have much more coming up. we'll look at the safety system that amtrak uses along parts of the northeast corridor and why it was not in this use along this stretch of the track. 6:05 now. today the homeland security department inspector general will testify about a now infamous secret service incident. back in march, two crashed their car on the white house complex. the inspector general just released a report that says the agents were likely impaired by alcohol at the time. the report says the agents spent knife five hours at the bar. one of the men was second on command on president obama's detail. he is now retiring. the other is on administrative leave. today metro leaders will talk about a major financial hit

we have breaking news at 6:16. take a look at this scene. this is on the inner loop of northern virginia. brake lights major backups on the beltway before braddock road. chopper 4 is over the scene right now. first 4 traffic tracker is on the way to the scene as well. but you can see saul of the traffic -- see all of the traffic that it needs to deal with. melissa mollet will have more for you at 6:21. no service between new york and philadelphia again today on amtrak. investigators are trying to figure out why a train derailed in philadelphia. you can see some of the ntsb crews at the crash side right now. they say the train was traveling at more than 100 miles an hour.

the speed limit is just 50 at that particular turn. there are growing questions this morning about why this area doesn't have something that's called a positive train control system. the news4 i-team did some digging to learn more. the system can automatically sense a speeding train in areas where the speed limits are restricted. the ntsb says it may have saved lives if it existed where the derailment happened. >> positive train control is designed to prevent derailments due to overspeeding. so this is type of the accident that positive train control should prevent. >> congress mandated positive train control after a crash in california in 2008. it is used on part of amtrak's northeast corridor but again not in that section of the derailment. now, many democrats say expanding the positive train control system is just one

reason the federal government needs to continue spending money on amtrak, but a large group of republicans disagreed. yesterday, they voted to cut the budget. if passed, amtrak would get $1 billion, half of what president obama budgeted for the rail system. it's tied to a massive transportation bill that's making its way through congress right now. we have much more on the deadly derailment just ahead at 6:30 we'll look at the people who died and the impact that this tragedy is having on communities along the northeast corridor. new this morning five firefighters are okay after being pulled from this house fire. look at these images of flames shooting out of the roof. fire officials tweeted this photo of the flames just from that house. firefighters were called to the house in the neighborhood around 1:00 this morning. news4's megan mcgrath is in gaithersburg this morning with more. megan? >> reporter: well, now that the sun has come up you can see the section of the roof that

collapsed. some intense moments for the firefighters who were inside at the time that the roof came tumbling down. they were actually trapped there for a time. they had to send out a mayday. fortunately all of those firefighters were able to get out. they're okay we're told. no serious injuries. no burns. they were however taken to the hospital just as a precaution. but this fire was pretty intense there for a time. you can see from the video the damage that was done. the response by firefighters. now this is on leekes lot way in the kentlands neighborhood. the homeowner had a fire going yesterday, that created or caused a chimney fire and that fire then spread to the roof and the attic. there are wood shingles on the roof of the house. once things got to the shingles it really -- the fire got going. the fire is out. we have seen a little bit of smoke here and there this morning. firefighters have returned to

the scene to keep an eye on things but the flames are out. but a tremendous amount of damage here. the estimate -- $800,000. back to you in the studio. happening now a water main break in laurel. laurel police just posted these pictures on facebook. we want to show you. this is van deucen road. it's flooded you see there between erica and cherry lane. it's shut down in both directions. again, a water main break. best to avoid that area right now. aaron? >> thank you. 6:20 right now. metro now says it will investigate why a driver who wears an islamic head scarf was not allowed to drive a car full of political vips. a muslim advocacy group says the driver's silver line train was commandeered by a supervisor. this happened on friday. the driver says she was then watched by security personnel. she says she cried in humiliation. the transportation secretary and virginia congresswoman barbara comstock were among the vips.

the jury will continue deliberations in the bombing trial. lawyers for dzhokhar tsarnaev are hoping for mercy and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. the defense argued tsarnaev should spend the rest of his life in prison. this is the same jury that found tsarnaev guilty of 30 counts against him. three people died and more than 260 were hurt in the 2013 attack. and take a look at this surveillance video from new york city. watch closely, you will see man swinging a hammer at two police officers. he hit one of them repeatedly in the head. that's when the officers chased him and shot him. right now, the suspect is in the hospital in critical but stable condition. the two officers were treated and released. police believe the man is responsible for attacking four other people with a hammer this week. right now the search is on for the marine corps helicopter that disappeared on a mission in nepal. it disappeared on tuesday with

six marines and two nepalese troops on board. at least four u.s. aircraft and hundreds of nepalese troops are searching for the missing helicopter east of kathmandu. the fairfax county search and rescue team will be staying in nepal longer than first planned. there are new photos i want to show them to you here of the crews working this week. the team was preparing to return home until monday's strong aftershock caused new trouble. both the teams from the u.s. and fairfax jumped back into full rescue mode and even rescued a woman. it took four hours. breaking news on the beltway right now. we're talking about the inner loop at braddock road. chopper 4 over the scene. it's completely shut down. the main lanes are shut down because of the bus fire. you can see the people standing on the right side of the roadway. the bus here and then the fire trucks, this will be some time and some big backups before it get out of the way.

unaccounted for this morning. a lawyer for the train's engineer says his client doesn't remember what happened. congress is now looking into the crash as well. congressman bud schuster is headed to the crash site today. he's chairman of the house transportation committee and he's from pennsylvania. minutes ago we learned that 47 people are still in hospitals in philadelphia. doctors are also treating eight people for critical injuries. the derailment hurt more than 200 people out of the 243 on board that amtrak train. one doctor at temple university hospital said nearly all of the patients there had rib fractures and not head trauma as he had expected. now, at least seven people died when the train sped into a turn and completely derailed. we are learning more about the victims now. the "today" show's natalie morales has more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you aaron. that's right. we are learning so much more about those seven victims and

obviously so many families heartbroken here this morning. as you said, the focus of this investigation right now, very much so on the speed of that train. it's been reported it was traveling at 106 miles per hour, more than twice the speed limit. that's a 50 mile per hour curve that it was turning into so investigators have a lot of questions for brandon bostian, the 32-year-old reportedly has given a preliminary statement to police and has handed over his cell phone. and also voluntarily given a blood sample so they can do the toxicology tests. but we are learning more as we said. focused so much more on the victims and families this morning. for example, we are learning ebb a 20-year-old navy midshipman,en zemser. he was traveling home on that train to see his family at the time of his accident. his parents saying everyone looked up to him, he was the guy on the football team that everybody counted on.

so many grieving at his loss this morning. we're learning more about a young mother rachel jacobs the ceo of a tech company on the train as well. the mother of a 2-year-old child. her son feeling the loss this morning. and those are just two of seven families who are dealing with such grief and obviously so many questions still unanswered here this morning. as the investigation continues we'll be sure to have more and bring you up to from here. back to you, aaron. >> natalie morales, see you at the top of the hour on the "today" show. we are still working to learn the names of two other people who died on that derailment. the victims included mothers and fathers, scholars and ceos, many who lived in new york. a family if our area is in mourning today. abid gilani worked at wells fargo in new york but spent several years with marriott in bethesda. his family lives in rockville. we heard from his wife for the first time last night. >> he was a kind family man. and we have suffered a

tremendous loss today. >> gilani and his wife had two children. he was here to attend a funeral a few days ago. 61 buildings were damaged by fires during the recent rioting in baltimore. the city's fire official said they were much higher than originally thought. the number stands at more than 200. 144 of those were vehicle fires. that's according to "the baltimore sun." baltimore defended riots hours after freddie gray who died while in police custody. 6:36 now. a man accused of murder in fairfax county will be in court today. moises dominguez is accused of killing 22-year-old william leiva earlier this year. fairfax county police found leiva's body in herndon in march. cleaning a noisy and messy problem off the national mall. how the national park service plans to keep geese off the popular grounds.

yes, certainly a lot of questions still remain about what happened here and investigators do want to talk to 32-year-old brandon bostian from queens, new york. he's the engineer that was at the controls at the time of the crash. now, i want to show you what's going on here. let me set the scene for you. still a lot of work happening here at the crash site. you see amtrak engineers up there. these guys have been rewiring poles. they're still bringing in fresh rail here to the scene. a lot of damage and destruction. we heard the word devastation used over and over again. it's going to take a long time just to clean up the scene here before we can determine exactly what happened. now, back to bostian. the engineer. he -- you mentioned his attorney says that he doesn't even remember the crash itself. he was going 106 miles an hour in a section of track where he should have been going about 50 miles an hour. he fully depressed the emergency brake right before the crash. let's talk about the ntsb for a second. what they're going to be looking

that five montgomery county firefighters are okay after being pulled from a house fire. officials tweeted out photos of the flames shooting from the roof of the house. firefighters were called to that home in gaithersburg. news4's megan mcgrath live with the overnight developments. >> well, aaron if you look behind me you can see the section of the roof that fell in. during this fire. causing some pretty tense moments. there were five firefighters who were inside when that roof collapsed. they sent out a mayday. now, fortunately, they were able to get out and we're told that they were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, nothing serious, no burns. this broke out early this morning. we are told that the homeowner had a fire going on in the fireplace and then the flames spread to the roof and attic from there. the fire is out at this point although firefighters are still on the scene keeping an eye on thing. we have seen smoke coming from the roof from time to time. but a tremendous amount of damage here. the estimate is $800,000. back to you in the studio.
